Truly underrated
This song is about life, which came to a one way street situation..You end up as a victim, lost in yourself and tortured by all the bad things that constantly penetrating your very soul..
If you are brave enough to bear that situation, you can, if you're working on it, escape this dreary nowhere land, or you will end up as a minimum size of yourself, and finally get eaten by a creature taller than you.
As a lifelong Genesis fan, to me this song is as good as anything else they did. Epic track

This is the awesome title track from Calling All Stations. As a long-time Genesis fan, I really love this album, and I think it is severely underrated as a Genesis album. It's my favorite album since Duke. Tony's chords permeate this whole project in true Genesis fashion!

Tony`s chords sound fantastic as usual but the song itself just sounds quite disjointed to me.
This is a magnificent album, magnificent lyrics that hit home every time, Ray Wilson is a magnificent singer, perfect for this songs.

The fact I didn't know about this album until early 2020... It's really good, I don't know why it's sooo underrated.
Here's why it's so underrated: rock fans. Specially of the nostalgic type.They just can't accept change.
At least they're acknowledging the existence of this album. They normally like to pretend that the CAS era doesn't exist.
Same as From Genesis to Revelation. At least with FGTR the label keeps it alive in various incarnations.
Sorry Adam but being a huge fan, Genesis will always be my favorite and saw them live from 1976-2007, this era didn't exist for me and nothing personal

Super Song.
Genesis always needed to be heard several times before making any judgment. This album is no different. Should have done at least one more. Too good to quit. Ray is a great vocal choice.
I remember my mum getting this album and even now it feels quite recent. Then I realise its been a quarter of a century...
This album is "the forbidden one" for the majority of the Genesis fans.
But I like it.
It came in my life in a time really suitable for the lyrics.
You can not compare "Calling All Stations" whith "Selling England By The Pound" for sure.
But I like it.

It took me years to notice it as I hated it first time around. But now I agree, several Genesis trademarks are heard throughout. Banks and Rutherford all over it indeed.
Ray Wilson slaps on vocals
at the moment when my father received this album in the People's Republic of Poland, which was breathing its last, I think I heard it on a mini-disc that was just coming out in Poland. Now I'm 35 years old and I'm still listening. Universal text appeals to all ages.

The live version from 1998 is longer, but focuses more on percussion imho
Ray Wilson does a great live version of this. There's a point in the song where it goes up a gear near the end. Very strong.

“Calling All Stations” is Still perhaps one of the most underrated albums I’ve ever heard when I first listened to this back in 2021. It’s a shame that this album got slaughtered by both Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins fanatics when it first came out in 1997 and CAS and Ray Wilson doesn’t deserve all the hate as he sounded much akin to Gabriel in most of the tracks.
Purest essence? What utter nonsense. Whatever anyone thinks about the relative merit of this album, purest essence of Genesis is absurd.
PS: Oh. And the fade out on this track is awful. Who's idea was that?! 🙈

I am embarrassed to say, I have yet to purchase or even hear this full album. I believe it's the only Genesis album I don't have. This is the first time hearing this song. I like it very much.
I guess when Phil left I was heartbroken and it almost felt like I had been divorced from the band. I certainly love the talent and genuis of Mike & Tony but it felt wrong to accept this change.

The fade out on this song is pretty funny. They didn't have an ending so they just turn down the volume on Ray singing full steam. Kind of a metaphor for his time in Genesis.

My sister got the CD from Columbia House. I think it was the one she had to buy according to contract. Anyways she gave it to me when she realizes Phil Collin was not the singer on it. Always being opened a new music. I kept it. Listen to it in the car while in route to school and fell in love with it. Specifically this track but eventually the whole album. Present-day I enjoy epic jogs to it from time to time 🙂

I don't think this album is as bad as people claim it is. It definitely has its merits, and this is a really good song. It is my least liked Genesis album, but I do like to emphasize that Ray Wilson is NOT the weak link here. His voice is perfect. It's the material itself that seems mailed in. I hate to say it, but if Collins or Gabriel were singing here, it would still probably be the weakest one.
Yeah, Ray isn't the problem. He has a great voice in the right context. Mike and Tony just wrote weak music that Ray had almost no input on. Some people say Genesis sold out with Phil in the 80s, but two 50+ year olds pretending they could pass as being a grunge band by just hiring a new young singer is what's really selling out.
To me, Ray's voice kinda reminds me of Peter's voice. Choosing him to be the next singer kinda made sense when you look through that sense. I think that when Phil left and they brought in Ray, they should have also have brought Steve Hackett, and maybe get a good jazz drummer (like Bill Bruford). I feel like that having more voices in the songwriting would have made a better album, and could have been the beginning of a Ray Wilson era of the band.

Rather than listening to the official album, I listen to my "Calling All Stations Mix" whose songlist is: Title track, Congo (must be the original album version), Shipwrecked, Sign You Life Away, Not About Us, The Dividing Line, Uncertain Weather, Anything Now, and concludes with There Must Be Some Other Way. Much more enjoyable to me...and I listen to this mix far more than Invisible Touch or We Can't Dance

I know a lot of people don't like it, but I certainly listen to it a lot more than several other Genesis albums. A real shame they didn't try another album with this lineup, it could have been really great. Anyway, the title track has a great, dark atmosphere and I love the way it sort of modulates through its runtime without any discernable verse/chorus structure.

Es war definitiv etwas ungewohntes ... die Stimme von Ray Wilson, statt die von Phil Collins zu hören. Meines Erachtens wurde das Album ´97 zu Unrecht "verrissen"! Die Stimme, wie die Person passten zu Genesis und ich hätte sehr gerne mehr davon gehört. Heute ist das Album ein "Klassiker" und hat zu Recht einen Platz in der Historie von Genesis verdient. Ray Wilson Solo ist übrigens ein wahrer Genuss für das Herz, die Seele, wie die Ohren.

Lack of promotion. I didn't even know this album existed and I'm a huge Genesis fan. Listening today for the first time. Weird not hearing Phil sing. Used to not hearing Peter sing Genesis for decades

Bring on Ray Wilson (one of my favourite vocalists).
I found the mood this song evoked very compelling. But somehow it seemed to me that it didn’t know where it began or ended. It just sort of rambles…a real “dog’s breakfast.” Does that make sense to anyone else?
Like the beginning and end in concert, they did get much criticism for fading all the songs on the album, so I get ur point!

On doit s’adapter à la voix plus grave de Ray Wilson...le gars fait un travail formidable ! Huge Genesis fan here, throughout all eras. While CAS definitely has fantastic moments and overall the album has grown on me throughout the years, it is far from Genesis' best album. If unfortunately suffers to the probably unrealistic comparison of the band's golden era. Some fans/reviewers hate on Ray Wilson, but I enjoy his voice and thought he was a good choice. The biggest flaw is the cutting of several good, catchy songs, making them B-sides, and replacing them with several very generic and forgettable numbers which greatly drags CAS' momentum.
In the end, while CAS is not as bad as some reviewers rate it, I find I appreciate CAS more than I love it. 2.5 stars out of 5 feels about right...
This is 1st time I've heard about this album, & 1st time listened to this track .
It's not bad , sounded ok but it gave me the same reaction as when ACDC lost their singer.....it's never the same , and I still feel that way today about ACDC, even though now it sounds ok .

Eh just cos they are called Genesis does not mean there are religious themes everywhere! Have you heard 'Jesus he knows me?' That is anti organised religion!!

The title track is one of Genesis songs that really moves me! But why... WHY did they fade out the track in the middle of the verse!? It disapoints me every time I hear it! Why couldn't they just let him sing the verse through and then fade it out instrumentally? In my opinion It would make the song so much better!
