    What's your opinion on the belt finish on this blade?

    • @GG-ud1ib
      @GG-ud1ib 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It looked good, but for a firm evaluation I would need hands on. I myself have never used a belt for honing,

    • @TyrellKnifeworks
      @TyrellKnifeworks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@GG-ud1ib it wasn’t sharpened or honed on the 2x72. The grinding of the bevels was done on the grinder with no hand sanding. It was sharpened on a Wicked Edge and stropped on a leather strop.

      Eu estou usando as lixas de grão aglomerado como as Mercurit da Hermes, são incríveis e dão um belo acabamento escovado, e a tua faca ficou maravilhosa, adorei o cabo!

      Personal opinion? Not a fan. Reminds me too much of a mass produced knife that just gets ground on a machine and not fully finished.
      On another note, that CA glue is also an excellent overall finish on wood, especially when you want a glass smooth finish. Coat the entire handle wood with it, hit it with the accelerator, lightly sand and do a second coat. Then, sand it smooth and polish it. Looks like glass and is quite durable.
      For finishing wood to a super fine finish, look into a set of "Micro Mesh" sanding sheets. They are cloth backed with an ultra thin layer of cushion. The set goes from 1500 up to 12,000 grit. I use it on my lathe when turning wood bowls and small items. You can polish stab ilized materials to a glass finish with it.

      Hello I am a Knife maker from Germany and I have a question.
      I often use G-10 and wood in a combinaton for my Knife handels. But the problem with this is, that the G-10 after a time sticks out a bit. What can I do about this?

    This is off key, but I’m a new maker and try to support some of you guys by buying shop tools. But seldom does the link to Amazon work. This time I was looking at the pyrometer gun but the link was a dud. Make if you guys added to the description it would help. I don’t know what your cut is, may not be worth changing anything. As usual, great video and you are one hell of a prof!

    Sweet! I love the sweeping lines and elegant curves to this one, Denis. The belt finish came out great, especially when you consider that there was no need for hand sanding!!
    That CA glue trick looks great. I must have missed that - where have I been!!
    The 2nd, 3rd and now 4th knife I've made (and making) were all ground post HT. Although the 1x30 is slow,I prefer to grind then post HT to avoid warps, and a harder blade means a slower, but more controlled grind. It does for me, because I'm new and relatively inexperienced, so don't want it to run away from me.

  • @Karlos0412

    Hi there. Is there a difference between CPM-154 and 440C steel. I use 440C with a full tang and I cannot find a drill bit that can penetrate. It just polishes the surface and destroys bits (even very expensive cobalt bits). I have to grind the hole area and define it using JB weld. Seeing as you managed to drill a hole for the handle I'm wondering if CPM-154 is a bit more forgiving?

    • @TyrellKnifeworks
      @TyrellKnifeworks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      CPM154 is a very different steel than 440c. Much better (and more expensive!) in my opinion. I drilled that hole with a carbide ball end mill. If you were using drill bits you’d probably have to anneal it and drill very slow so you don’t heat it up. Remember it’s an air-hardening steel so if you heat it up it’ll harden. Thanks for watching.

    • @TyrellKnifeworks
      @TyrellKnifeworks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Looks wonderful, on a full chromium stainless (18% or more) they more or less finish up fine with 600-800g and scotchbrites. Some of the 12-14% steels tend to need a little more just to help give it a bit more stain resistance. If I could get away with it I'd just do runs of stainless and high alloy steels for all my knives for the sheer cutting performance and low maintenance, but customers still want carbon steel even for kitchen knives so I guess I'll keep making them.
    Currently been experimenting with S35VN and it responds really well so far, does like the cryo between tempers though

    love your stuff man, top notch for sure. quesion, what kind of epoxy do you prefer to use? i am fresh out and need to get some so i figured i would get an opinion. also maybe a short spear build in the future like the zulu iklwa from forged in fire but a little more modern? the best i have seen for a more modern build of it has been "the spit" from zombie tools

      I’ve used JB Weld and gflex, both are fine. I know so many people are picky about epoxy but I’ve never had a problem with either. Mix it well and let it set. The biggest issue is don’t overheat the work or any epoxy will let go. I’ll consider the spear for a build! Thanks for watching!

    Since this is just powder metallurgy 440 the cryo is required but dry ice? Even in a acetone slurry the best you'll get is what -60 F, maybe. Liquid nitrogen is significantly colder at ~ -330 F. Long way around the barn to ask is that towel full of dry ice doing anything? 62 RHC before temper doesn't seem like it. Did I miss something? I must have. Still looks great though. Cheers.

    Can you make Stainless Steel Damascus? I heard from a metallurgy expert in the UK it can be done but he didn't say how. Maybe combine the stainless with a carbon steel? Or make a Damascus Steel pattern out of the usual material then have a stainless steel edge in a kind of San-Mai method?

    • @TyrellKnifeworks
      @TyrellKnifeworks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stainless damascus is certainly possible, it's just tougher to make. Stainless doesn't like to forge weld together very well so you need to completely seal all the seams so no air gets in. You need different types of stainless to provide a pattern. Thanks for watching, Alexander.

I make knives primarily as content for TH-cam and since this is just a hobby and I have a regular day job, I don’t have the time to also do custom orders in addition to creating new content for TH-cam each week. My builds for TH-cam are rarely the same knives he since viewers want to see something new in each build. If you think it’s a unique knife, please email the details at tyrellknifeworks at gmail. In my experience, even if your band saw blade was new you shouldn't use it for CPM154. You'll get about two inches of cutting before the bandsaw blade is ruined. The 154 work hardens or something, and the bandsaw blades can't handle it.

    Hello, how much is the purchase price of this knife?
    Have you ever made a knife with a spring steel metal? Did you know that this knife made of spring steel has a strong spring that can cut even iron metal?
    Of course, my taste is mostly in military style knives. An example of these very stylish knives at the beginning of
    Resident Evil Revelations2 game is in the hands of a female character named Claire Redfield, she is extremely beautiful.
    Be sure to see the beginning of this game! I took a picture of this knife, it has a long handle, a long blade, thick, ribbed, and hand protection
    I mean to make special military knives that have a strong diamond to break the glass in case of emergency behind the knife handle

    • @TyrellKnifeworks

      I do forge to shape at times. This is stainless steel and you don’t forge this to shape. What you saw someone else do is with normal carbon steel. Also when I’m doing mosaic or some complex Damascus, you don’t want to forge that to shape, it distorts the pattern. Watch this Sunday’s build, I’ll be forging. Thanks for watching.
