First off, much appreciate you and your work as always! You make information easy to understand for people who aren’t techies. Funny story, I work in DoD, and we have a yearly cyber awareness training course to take. It’s typically pretty decent for the normies. The rest will learn the hard way. Thanks again!
There's some good tips in here, but I've come across a roadblock before: if you are not popular enough in your friend group (the thought leader that people look to), you will have a much harder time. There was a time when, through internal and external factors, I was popular in my friend group. That friend group has since disbanded and I do not have any pull in any sizeable social circle. If no one cares to get ahold of you, then no one cares if you make yourself hard to reach. In other words, you have to have more, or at least equal, power in a two-way dynamic (friendship or acquaintanceship). If you're the one who wants the other's time/attention, you'd have quite a hard time convincing them of anything.
I strongly agree. Naomi has social leverage so she can make her contacts switch messaging apps. You and I can't force others to switch. Our friends and family will either get mad or even leave us alone if we try what Naomi preaches here. She doesn't understand what it's like to be a nobody in this world.
In the world we are currently in, well, every bit of information is worth listening too. Information is key and one of the most important things in life. If they refuse to listen then they can face the consequences.
@edthelazyboy "she doesn't understand what it's like to be a nobody in this world"? No one is a nobody. You have to find people who want to be your genuine friend and vice versa. The situation you described means those aren't your real friends. Simple. Real friendship groups don't have a "popular" one and vice versa this isn't high-school. Only surface level friendships have that kind of system.
So what? Stand firm. Are people who don’t care about what’s important to you worth giving up your privacy for or not? When you stand up for something, even if that’s just your own boundaries, you become an intrinsically more respect-worthy (therefore attractive) friend.
Thank you for all you do Naomi. Love your videos! And thank you for the tips. I’m having trouble with some family members making the switch to Signal with me.
its definatly difficult to get my friends to switch. The most popular phase I hear is "I have nothing to hide. Why should I be concerned?". Then it was too late for people to protect themselves from the aggresive government now in power. Few people seem to see it is becoming possible in places once thought impervious to such tactics. Thanks for what you do to help us protect ourselves

Great let me try that with family so they can drive me nuts... yea no thank you. If I went threw all that and found out that the app is not actually all that secure I would be really pissed off. I know too many people I know I will never get them to switch.
Its very easy. If someone is your friend they download the app. If not they dont really care for conversations with you and are no longer friends. Very simple
These tactics are manipulative. I just tell people my preference is signal and the more tech savvy are usually already there. If someone prefers sms or matrix, so be it.
Sharing photos in groups to make Signal more 'fun' sounds counterproductive to me. Dare say your phone camera spys on you too. Arbitrary photo sharing... seems an odd thing. I don't need groups of friends that like or need such wasteful nonsense.
Random counter-argument (just as a thought exercise, and I will probably word itso poorly as to unintelligible, but...) - If all the rational people "go dark," then the dark forest algorithms will be overtaken by the madness that remains. Will hiding risk the hastening of the next dystopia?
It would be a positive shift of the Overton window. It would be well known that most conversations are hidden, so any move to exposed platforms would be resisted. Those few still exposed would, being the last targets left, be quickly incentivised to take care of that. And probably helped by those close to them if they're lucky enough to have anyone.
So, either I butchered my explanation, or I am missing something in your response. Let me try to break down my thinking better. First- an assertion: Social Media corps profit from engagement. Fear and sensationalism are effective tools of engagement, Thus are incentivized. Given this, as rational people disengage, what is left is the more extreme parts of the population in the roles of content creators and engagers. With the rise of (pseudo) AI, which essentially works as a feedback loop, based on existing content, the now unchecked extreme fringes will further polarize, driving towards a dystopian chaos. Disclaimer: I work in IT (OT technically), but list "author" as a hobby (which I hope will become more than a hobby in time), and I am currently working on writing a pre-apocalyptic conspiracy series, so my thinking is very likely tainted by that research :-).
- "I have nothing to hide"
- "Aren't you hiding your password?"
Last time I tried to convince my "friends" about anything they just called me a conspiracy theorist.
Tell them Nissan terms of service literally says they are tracking users sexual activities, so they can't deny it and that should make them wonder what other companies are up to.

No way man. It's way to hard to press the blue icon on my phone instead of the green one. There's no way I could switch because that would mean pressing a different button. iT's tOo HaRd 🤪
We tried Signal but some people just refuse
Great let me try that with family so they can drive me nuts... yea no thank you.
If I went threw all that and found out that the app is not actually all that secure I would be really pissed off.
I know too many people I know I will never get them to switch.
Its very easy. If someone is your friend they download the app. If not they dont really care for conversations with you and are no longer friends. Very simple
Session > Signals
no, Session does not work, I have given it a shot multiple times. Don't fall for it. Simplex is way better.
Why is simplex better?!@@1vbAPiYk
Hey Naomi, make a video about robot vacuums and privacy! Please Please Please! #newvideo #suggestion
@3:10 "illegal to encrypt"? Google Fi does E2E for voice between subscribers--better than their neutered RCS message obfuscation.
I know iMessage, but what is SMS? I remember it decades ago, but where is it even?
SMS is what we use in the US to communicate. Unlike the rest of the world it's completely free and unlimited even on prepaid plans.
I’m finding that signal often experiences delays in sending and receiving messages. Does anyone else have this issue. I’m in Scotland.
Join me, Naomi. Signal is great! ❤
When I try to get friends to use apps like signal session or proton they will just say “what are you trying to hide” 🤦♂️
tell them you have the right to choose not to hare all your private communications with thousands of data brokers.
The key is to not making it about privacy but features. Talk about how much better the UI is, how many features it has, how fast it is etc
These tactics are manipulative. I just tell people my preference is signal and the more tech savvy are usually already there. If someone prefers sms or matrix, so be it.
Are you trying to manipulate me into letting people do as they please?
@@CurlyWoof you know you want to!
Its a sad life. I wish we can all go back to the payphone days life jn general was much better back then. It cant be an easy generation to grow up in
3 letter agencies are already into Signal.
Yep that’s the info I found researching signal !!!🥺and I also inserted a link on the Business end it .
Lmao ur trust is so low that u start trusting the 3 letter agencies themselves because they say so
I miss out on so much not having a phone. Really I feel bereft........not..........
what is username you have in Signal ??
How private is Apple iMessage?
So sad that Zoom swallowed Keybase and now it languishes. The service allows you to control your identity.

Alternatively don't share anything too sensitive when texting via sms. Less is best.
Session is very private and does not require a phone number.
what does that mean? I needed my cell phone number to install Signal.
isnt signal not safe anymore>?
Signal is great, I use it everyday
Just use threema or session
Facebook is the new smoking
