The Most PRIVATE Search Engine

  • Search engines completely revolutionized how we access the web. If you want to find a website, you can type in keywords and search engines will show you a list of websites that match your criteria.
But your searches can reveal a lot of private information about you: your interests, location, medical conditions, political affiliation.
Google has 90% of the market share for searches, and they track everything you do. This gives them a deep, granular insight into who you are, and this is information that they sell.
Search engines are also an effective tool for controlling what information people have access to, and there are many studies that look at how search engines influence the behavior of users by filtering out some search results and prioritizing others.
Luckily there are many ways you can protect your privacy and take back control over your quests for information. Sometimes you sacrifice the quality of your search results by doing this, but other times you’d be surprised at how good alternative results are.
We look at the following privacy-focused browsers:
    00:00 - What is a search engine?
    5:00 - DuckDuckGo
    6:56 - MetaGer
    8:00 - SearX
    9:15 - Qwant
    10:17 - StartPage
    11:57 - Mojeek
    13:01 - YaCy
    14:24 - Brave Search
Always assess your personal risk and threat-level when choosing a search engine, and remember that taking small steps to minimize your internet footprint can go a long way in protecting your privacy!

    *Edit:
For those wondering if using a more private browser like Brave helps mitigate surveillance from using Google search. Here is a response from NBTV tech advisor Kieran Mesquita:
"Brave will block some fingerprinting measures and it does block a bunch of endpoints that google uses for telemetry collection but Google has multiple redundant ways to collect this information so the actual impact is pretty negligible when using Google search itself. Most of the telemetry blocking mitigates Google’s ability to track users on 3rd party sites (via adsense and google analytics) and not when using 1st party Google sites/tools."
    Hope that helps!

Fine video - love the popculture and C-Span illustrations.
As adressed in the video, STARTPAGE is controlled by US marketing research companies like SYSTEM1 - something similar goes for SWISSCOWS while DUCKDUCKGO has aligned with the US State Department in 2022, filtering search results along US 'ideological orthodoxy' (so called 'values', instead of vulgar and transparent *_'interests'_* ).
METAGER is an approach from Germany that goes way back into the 1990s and is privacy-literate, but like France vulnerable to US diplomatic pressure.
In the end, open source, decentralized and highly customized search engines - possibly with some strictly anonymized technology for market research (e.g. replacing already blocked advertisment) is likely sustainable - after the current, centralized and politicized models come crashing down during the already begun process of *geopolitical decoupling* ...

firefox is my engine, but google still muscles its way in, tbh i think this is how the web is configured to direct searches to begin with, specially in the states...as for any spying and data gathering they do, well in my case there is nothing they can use from me that will affect me... and if they choose to block certain searches that i need specific answers from, well there is always the OLD FASHIONED WAYS of doing things, like going to a library or other LOCAL sources, all of which require ZERO internet use....

My question is, if I have a Google phone can I still use these websites without having Google track what I do over across "encrypted apps" I want to use these websites "and I have before" but if I use these encrypted apps on I google phone, than can they still track what I do across other apps?? I would really like to know how private it really is.

Google is so popular because they serve results that tickle the users confirmation bias it is like a warm filt around you.

Can you put this in a GRAPH format .? Ticks and Crosses is so much simpler to follow you.

RE: duck duck ... I have tried over & over , most of the time , I get a load of blarney & not what I want . The way it is presented , many are hard to tell who they are , they take the profile of who you want . Sucks eggs .

Hi Naomi. Firefox has a Facebook Container which is a beautiful extension and Brave does not have this extension. Does this make Firefox more Private than Brave when using Facebook?

By default Brave is the best privacy browser, but if you want to customize and add other plugins Firefox is also a great choice as you mention.

@@NaomiBrockwellTV Thank you for the reply. I do enjoy customizing stuff so for now I'll use brave for some things and Firefox for others.
