    The most important thing is that /etc is R/W (over;ayfs) so systemctl enable ssh makes it work. Second is that I am probable going to use containers in ~deck or anywhere in /home. /home is R/W

      Yeah, that's perfectly fair. I wanted to keep it as vanilla as possible (only changed the wallpaper even, didn't even change the theme). Just be careful for the time being as OS updates have reverted some things for me already so I'd say don't use this in a production environment at the moment but I can confirm that /usr/ was reset back to factory settings for me and all applications I installed there no longer work, their icons are gone too from the application menu but the entries are still there but of course just throw an error when you click on them

    Nice!
    I haven't had a computer for a out 18 months (except a old Chromebook and phone).
    Before that, I've been using Linux for about a decade. I've been hemming and hawing over whether I should get a steam deck or a macbook. I dont want both.
    This helped. I was hoping the SD would be basically "uneventful," as a desktop replacement like you said as it is my first choice. But if it is weird to use as a computer, then the MacBook looked more reasonable.
    I'm probably the only person cross shopping a SD and m1 MacBook air...

    • @DrearyMiddle
      @DrearyMiddle  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ha ha yeah probably, I think most people probably are just looking at the Steam Deck as a handheld device. Obviously it’s up to you what you go for but a laptop does have an added benefit of being more accessible when you’re away from your desk. The Steam Deck’s screen isn’t that big and it can be somewhat fiddly to use in desktop mode whilst you’re just holding it in your hands
      Good luck!

    • @bloepje
      @bloepje 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have been using linux for a decade, then that steam deck works perfectly fine. I have 3 chromebooks, but since Google's latest container work, ipv6 just doesn't work anymore. And on any normal system it works.
      What's clunky though is the screen. You need a monitor/keyboard/mouse to use it as a daily driver.
      However, if you need to be an occassional road warrior, a bt keyboard and a stand might be enough for emergency work.
      I bought my steam deck as a serious laptop replacement. If my laptop dies, I can't work and hence can't bill. With the steam deck I can still work. But I only have it for 3 days now. I will keep my / ro and try to install an lxc or something.

      @@bloepje I will have a dock set up at home, so it will be like a desktop. I have most of the stuff already.
      I don't really need a mobile computer. And when I do, the sd should be just as useful as my Chromebook. (More useful, less ergonomic).
      My concern was that there was going to be some sort of 'gotcha' with the SD as a desktop replacement. I don't rely on a computer for work, so that's not a worry.
      Thanks for the help!

    • @DrearyMiddle
      @DrearyMiddle  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds great! I don't know how much you know about Linux but if you're new definitely just take a bit of time out to explore the desktop, have a poke around. Don't worry about breaking anything as Valve have made it as new comer friendly as they can so you don't have admin (or root as it's known) access initially and a few of the key OS folders are locked so you can't break them unless you turn off the restrictions. It is quite different to Windows or macOS for sure but honestly after a while you'll learn the quirks of it just like you did for the other OSs.
      The Steam Deck runs SteamOS 3 but right now you can't download it as a separate OS yet (Valve time though so "soon" might not mean soon) but SteamOS 3 is based on top of an OS called Arch Linux which provides all the backend OS stuff and uses KDE Plasma for its user interface and apps. I'd say the most user friendly and most similar OS would be the Plasma variation of Manjaro which you can download from here: manjaro.org/download/. There will be some Manjaro specific apps which the Steam Deck won't have but for the most part it'll be the same. You can also try the OS without installing it just by burning the ISO you downloaded to a DVD or USB Stick, plugging it in and selecting it when you boot your computer: wiki.manjaro.org/index.php/Special:MyLanguage/Burn_an_ISO_File. Or of course, you can just use a virtual machine to run it inside your existing OS but this does affect performance a bit.
      Hope this helps! Enjoy your Deck!

      @@DrearyMiddle that's why you should use vim instead of visual studio ;-). I have so many bad memories about visual studio. I had to install gvim so visual studio would open gvim instead of doing the edit sessions itself. It was so easy to crash visual studio and hence loose all edits, while if (g)vi(m) would crash, all the edits are still there. But then again, it doesn't crash since even before the inception of windows 3. But in that period there was m.exe, which was a pretty decent and probably last of the good editors of microsoft.

      @@bloepje I can't say I share experience unfortunately, Visual Studio Code has been fairly good to me, I like that it doesn't matter what I'm working on it just kind of accepts anything I throw at it, live share is a pretty cool function too so multiple people can share a session and terminal, I've got my automation workflows set up so it can start doing tasks in the background while I code. It's not perfect and I don't love it, but it gets the job done perfectly fine, it's also the standard at my work as well alongside PyCharm so it's good in that respect.
      I know how to use vim and that's why I don't use vim. Vim is brilliant when you're limited to a keyboard and a terminal, but I just prefer how some of the more modern text editors work. Are they creature comforts? Sure. But for vim to be at the level I'm happy with I need to use plugins, which to be fair I have a GitHub repo with them in, but in closed off environments, I can't access them.
      If by all means vim works in your workflow go for it, but it's not for me. But I'm also not bound to VSCode, if something better for my workflow comes along I'll move, I am eyeing up JetBrains Fleet but I'll have to wait and see about licensing on that one

      There currently isn't any explicit driver support for other Linux distributions but as long as the distro you are picking has Linux kernel 5.18 or above it should have some support for the deck as Valve submitted some Steam Deck support to the kernel. As far as I'm aware it does include basic support for pretty much everything, but I think performance from the APU isn't as good as it is on SteamOS since that was designed with the Deck in mind. I believe this is the same as on Windows where it does have driver support but not the optimisations so you loose out on a bit of performance

      Ah, unfortunately I’m not a digital artist but I do use GIMP and Darktable for the occasional bits of photography I do. I think you’ll need to look at your workflow and see what is and isn’t available on Linux. Like, if you use Krita you’re golden, whereas if you use any of the Adobe suite it doesn’t really work on Linux. As for the Paint Tool Sai programs, apparently the Windows versions do work on Linux, they just have to be installed through WINE which allows for you to run Windows programs on Linux and Mac
