      @@morethanfarmers Hi, this is not to be mean but to inform. Please never ever carry your laying hens or roosters upside down unless you are carrying them to harvest them. It messes up their crop and also it suffocates them and puts them under extreme stress. Many say they get "tranquilized" when upside down, well that is why. They can't breath and it empties their crop. Not good. Hope you have changed that practice. Other than that, Love your channel and we all learn together.

    That mobile food/water shelter looks awesome, we need something like that too I think. I have heard that the hawks won't swoop in if the net is long and skinny rather than square? Our hawks here pretty much leave the hens alone (they seem to prefer roadkill hhaha) but we do have native little falcons that will steal whole smaller hens but we haven't yet had issues with them thankfully. So good to see your young man stepping up and doing this himself! Congrats on your subs, you guys are killing it! Dana

    I want to use a mesh bottom trailer if I get a chance to build another chicken coop. It's a coop built on a trailer base. Could be problems in winter and with wind though. Maybe build a tunnel design? It is really a challenge to keep the eggs clean. This design plus rollaway nests scream efficiency to me though. I currently have a concrete floor. It sounds lovely but you either have to use water almost daily to clean it or lots of bedding. I love the mesh bottom, move able trailer for that. Maybe roosts at the top of the structure and heat lamps would do the trick in winter. Could build it so a plywood floor could slide under a side of it too. Just my big idea. It takes so much effort to keep the eggs clean.

      Kind words, thank you 😊 We have done it before, but it kinda sucks if you don’t have the proper equipment. For us it’s not worth spending the money on equipment vs having someone do it. Plus with the small amount we do we don’t get enough practice to get fast at it so it takes a long time.

    My old fingers giving me trouble.
    Back to the fish. It has little to do with farming but more to do with organizing and growing things of value. Red or blue shrimp can be raised in a bucket. Surprising numbers also in $.
    As I previously mentioned it would be helpful if a larger city in not too far. The US mail is excellent at handling such critters. Just a thought for your boys to think about

    New subscriber here, love your content. I live outside LA on a small city lot but dream of one day growing my own food, raising chickens and maybe goats on a homestead. I love my small yard and tending to my flowers for now. I’d love the gardening book. Thanks for all you do!

    Not sure if anyone already suggested this but have you thought about giving a couple of geese with your chickens to protect them from predators?
    Anyways love your channel and always look forward for new videos ❤

    • @morethanfarmers
      @morethanfarmers  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We’ve thought of that, just never got it done. We used to have geese, separate from the chickens, and they definitely seem like they’d do the job.

    Why take the chance on the possibity of hawks killing your chickens. Seems to me that you could have a way to have 2 of those chicken tractors the size that your young son could move if and when you are not around. By the way what is stopping you from helping him in the first place?

    • @morethanfarmers
      @morethanfarmers  ปีที่แล้ว

      We are definitely keeping an eye on our chickens. We just love the idea of them not having to be cooped up in a small chicken tractor. The net gives them room to roam and forage. As for Izzi, we like for our kids to have jobs that they can do themselves. It's fulfilling for them and teaches responsibility. I have to go to work every day, and they do their chores after I leave. So it's nice if Michelle doesn't have to be going outside all the time to help them:) We definitely help them though if they need it:)
