It was really emotional for him to perform this. He did cry during rehearsal, and he had to stop and reign his emotions in and commented that he will have to be careful not to be too emotional during the actual performance.
He wasn't abused physically as a child. His parents divorced when he was about 2, and he was largely left alone without an adult parent at home. He was also bullied by other kids, so it was indeed quite a tough childhood that he had. He ever said that the one thing that his dad said the most to him was 'Don't ever expect me to teach you anything'. His dad had never praised him until the day he won the 'Super Boy' championship, that his dad finally told him that he felt proud of his achievement. He was already 23 years old by then. Their relationship had improved when his dad remarried when he was around 11,but he was still largely the ignored child. His step mom said that he was a melancholic child, and always prefers to be left alone. So yeah. Tough life.

Being ignored , and never affirmed in any way, is a an abuse, perhaps as damaging as physical cruelty.

Josh, I am 49 years old and heard this song the first time about 2 years ago. The first time I saw it I was mesmerized, and when he belted, you could hear the anguish, the anger, the hopelessness. I sat there for 5 minutes or so after the song, just crying silently to myself. Even now it still gives me chills, and watching others react to it always chokes me up. Loved your quiet and heartfelt reaction.

Again, Hua is a unique performance artist. He was in a competition SUPER BOY in 2013 & he sang this without the conversation part, this was from a show called THE NEXT, audience compete against him and they have a way of picking the song, then he has 24 hours to rearrange the song which he said he was better at. He has a lyricist who conveys through the word what Hua puts into his music.
The YT CHANNEL ENGLISH FAN SUBS ate more than happy to behold you out. Ask for Dahlia Kuo, she is very knowledgeable. I left some links to a few songs in your reaction to CHILD. He was 27 here he is 30 now and looks young but not like a young boy like he did, something in the Chinese culture wants to see him very young, in my opinion,

This is not Hua Hua's story. This is his transposition of a song by Jay Chou which was done in a rap style. But. as you can see, the power of Hua Chenyu is his ability to bring strong emotions into his music and performances.

Your reaction is very touching and even though you may chance getting strikes or blocked by not pausing more, you were respectful by waiting to the end. This song tears me apart and I know many can relate to this. His "crying" out is like releasing his emotion and frustration. There's no other performer who can express music like this. Fake Monk, exaggerated, 7 personalities are other examples of his artistic performances.

HuaHua is truly the best actor/singer, my favorite performer, this is a tough one to watch for me. His performances are always emotional but not always dark, although this is his darkest. I wish you would react next to his more recent creations, always powerful and emotional but not as dark, like his songs Madhouse at his last Haiku concert, or Ashes from Fireworks at T Mall Festival, both performances from last November. I'm giving you links with English subs in reply to this comment, if they don't show and you're interested, please check your spams, thank you!

Hua Chenyu is a brilliant composer and performer. This song is a cover, but Hua has his own wonderful compositions. His latest album, released in April, "New World", is on the Spotify music platforms ... His music conveys messages, has deep lyrics, addresses all musical styles, is a professional. Seven personalities, Madhouse, The Sacred Tree, Conversation with Martian children, I really want to love this world, just some of his compositions. Watch Singer 2020 and there you will see his compositions. Thank you ! He is a brilliant artist who deserves to be loved and promoted.

He once said something along the lines of anything can be an instrument- with the voice being the one that you can turn into a sound that you can't find from other physical instruments. He's rather known to be able to pick up pretty much any instrument and teach himself how to use it decently

I am so happy you got your video back. 🤗 And I could have seen it now. As others have mentioned this is not his own story, but he make you feel it is his story. In my opinion nobody conveys feelings through music as good as him. ☺ He has composed a trilogy last year. The first song is about fighting out of depression. It's called "I really want to love this world " , the second song is "Madhouse", the third song is called "Conversation with martian children". Looking forward to your next Hua Chenyu reaction. And all your other reactions too. 😊

The song relating to his own childhood is fake monk. He explains a little bit about it in the prestage Interview. If you do fake monk please watch a video which included the prestage interview. Really appreciate you reacting to this performance. Many of his performances, effects people like the way you react. It takes a moment to soak in what one just seen. One of many things I like about Hua when he rearranges songs is he takes his time with phrasing each words so meticulously that you are drawn into his performance and want to listen.
Hua wasn't physically abused, but emotionally neglected and feared his father as he showed no love or affection and was cold hearted. He lived mostly on his own with various nannies and was left to learn about life on his own. Hence living in his own world so to speak. His father did financially give Hua what he needed in material matters. Of course his father finally praised him for the first time and apologized during Hua's final performance on Superboy 2013 when he was 23. It appears they are in good state now.
As mentioned in the comments Fake Monk is HuArtistic masterpiece that he sang on Singer 2018. He debuted this song on Superboy 2013 and improved his version on the Singer. His recent masterpiece 7 personalities was debuted at his 2019 concert and sang it again on Singer 2020 competition. There are so many more he composed that have very deep meanings and artistically arranged and not all are so dark.
He performs these songs in a way, that you feel the pain, loneliness, and neglect. He wants people to be aware of those around them and show care even if one appears to say they are ok.

I know you want to go through Dimash’s journey but he just released a new video which he co directed and it is a real wake up call for what is happening in the world now, how his country has gone through wars, but there is always reason for hope. Thank you, Josh, for reacting to Hua Chenyu, and this song. In the original, the spoken was done in rap, which Hua does, but he chose to speak the the words instead. It gave much more meaning to the song. Hua suffered loneliness and bullying and no acceptance from his father and later, his stepmother. At one point, and fairly recently, he contemplated suicide. His music and the love from his fans keep him going. I have added him to my prayers because I see the hurt child still inside him. He has made several upbeat songs such as Nunchuks and I Don’t Care, which I enjoy, but he shows his soul in songs such as I Am What I Am and Us as well as Madness and Fake Monk. I wish you would continue to react to
Hua Hua. I am a “Dear” of Dimash, but have also become a fan of Hua Chenyu as well. Their singing styles are different, but they both touch your
heart and soul when they perform. Dimash is lucky enough to have and had a strong family with love and encouragement which, while Hua’s father is and was wealthy, that was really all he had.
Again, thanks and keep safe and well.
    Susan from Canada

I truly believe that this is the saddest song ever, not just because of the lyrics but also the performance, the sound of the artist's voice, which he uses like an instrument. This is not a Hua Chenyu original but a rearrangement for a competition show, where skilled amateur singers competed against professional singes. The amateur singer was allowed to select the song for the professional and thus song was assigned to Hua Chenyu by his challenger, and not his free choice. However, Hua Hua (his nickname) loves and respects the original artist and has a great deal of empathy with his painful memories, so did a marvelous job rearranging the song. He explained in an interview that he really enjoyed participating in The Next, because of the creative challenge given each week. As for translations, for English lyrics for Hua Chenyu try the Hua Chenyu English subs channel th-cam.com/users/HuaChenyuEnglishSubs-HCYESvideos. Their versions are quite good because they are the fruits of a group of people who have thought about the meaning and the context and truly love the artist. For other artists try lyricstranslate.com/.

Hi. Just to share. Hua has only mentioned his Mom twice.
The first one was on a programme with Hua going to Japan. This was very early on in his career, probably in 2014 or 2015. On one of the episode, he was talking about his family and the divorce and he said- "I've to protect somebody so I'm not going to talk about it anymore."
The second time was in 2019 in the variety show Ace vs Ace season 4 inwhich he is one of the 4 co-hosts. They were celebrating the International Women's Day. Everyone was talking about thanking their mothers. And Hua suddenly said- "I should thank my Mom for who I am now." Everyone knows about his parents' divorce and his lonely childhood so nobody said anything else. It seems that his Mom's family is musically talented. But Hua doesn't talk about his Mom (probably to protect her🙏) so all his fans know and respect that. Hua probably mentioned that because he loves that programme Ace vs Ace seasons 4 and 5. While he is the KING of the stage when he performs, he's a completely different person off it. He's super shy and very very soft spoken. But he's improved tremendously since joining the show. He has said he's become happier and he feels he's right at home on set which is very rare since he's so insecure. It was in the last episode( the theme was about friendship) of season 5 this year when his very good friend, whom he adoringly calls 2nd Elder Sister revealed that Hua almost jumped off the balcony early last year. That's why it's quite sad to hear him sing his new song- I Really Want to Love This World. Hua dedicates this song to all who suffer from depression.

Appreciate if you could react to the original composer and singer of the song as well, Jay Chou. He wrote many amazing songs and this is one of of them. He didn’t start out as a singer. It was said that the song was written for an established singer but the singer rejected the song saying it is impossible to sing it. The singer was not exactly wrong as the lyrics was too emotional to handle and it cannot be really be sung. Jay took the song back and ‘sing’ it in his trade mark rap and a new style was born which took the market by storm. His recent work is Mojito which he has incorporated the style into a Cuban rhythm which worked really well.
As for Hua, I am in awe of his live performance on stage. There may be many singers who are good vocally but he seems to be at a different level as he is able to immerse, feel, convey any songs in the most impactful way. His version of Dad I am Back is incredible. As it is, there aren’t many cover of this song due to its complexity but he nailed it with his own interpretation and style. He did another Jay’s song, Nunchucks which is also a very difficult song. You may wish to check that too, along with the original version. Hua’s original compositions are good as well. You may wish to check them in a program ‘Singer’ where he sang live.

Man tell me about it. Such an emotional song and its just him rearranging a popular Jay Chou rap song into this arrangement. I'm a dude but man does this song hit the heart hard.

If you love the messages in HuaHua’s song.
You need to check-out/react to his song “I Really Want to Love This World”.
A song for people with depression, through his own experiences and near attempt to end his own life.

This was for a domestic violence campaign... a re-interpretation from a rap song. But his story telling is very powerful. He enters into the moment wholeheartedly.

It must have something to do with copyrights. I don't think that Jay Chou was happy about such strong covers (the same story with Nunchucks). They are available in respective full episodes and compilations: th-cam.com/video/iIWqYXRPv0E/w-d-xo.html but unfortunately there are no English subs.

Josh, could you please react to one of Korea's most beloved singers please? Park Hyoshin doesn't have the widest range and his voice isn't the highest but he's one of the most emotional singers around. Park Hyoshin suffers from spasmodic dysphonia after going through so much tragedy in his life so it's a miracle he can even sing. th-cam.com/video/gp5gzKBnzLk/w-d-xo.html
I'm sorry but I don't do Insta or Twitter so this is the only way I can request this. Thank you!
