Thanks for your reaction, it's not a song that I ever recommend to reactors because don't really know them and actually many reactors come from disrupted homes and we've seen so many of them end up in tears. it's not a performance that can be recommended lightly.
the original is a rap + singing song written by Jay Chou, a famous singer in Taiwan. Hua Chenyu re-arranged it into a monologue + singing song full of emotions within 24 hours. Actually he cried during the rehearsal. The last sentence "I still want to call you Dad" was added by Hua Chenyu himself.
The professionally televised version is simply magnificent. The cameras catch his face, and the reactions of the audience. He could have sung it as a Rap. But so much more powerful delivered this way. On "The Next", programme, Judges/Mentors like Hua Hua have the song chosen for them. It is wonderful we even have a fancam of this performance.
You are right Fil. My dad was a WW2 here and Victorian in approach to life (no cuddles or mollycoddling). He never raised his hand to me as I was a girl. But he instilled discipline, which made us able to face down our problems. My late dad (who died aged 96) was.... my hero. ❤️

This is not his story, as others have mentioned; but his understanding of the emotions and his ability to express those emotions is astounding. As far as I know Hua Hua added the last sentence to the original lyrics: "I still want to call you papa". This makes it even more powerful. The abuse I experienced growing up came primarily from my mother. She was abusive physically and verbally. My dad was abusive to us in another way that was not like my mother's way of abuse, let's put it that way. Anyways, my sister and I made a pack that when we had our children, we would break the chain, so to speak, and never do to our children what our mother has done to us and that's what we've done. She now has 3 children and I have 4. We have made a point of never abusing our children to this day. Our children has never experienced the trauma that we did growing up. I have educated my children what my sister and I experienced growing up because I felt that they should be aware that this does happen out there in this world and how to deal with it if they should ever come across it as adults in their life. I also felt that something like we had to deal with growing up shouldn't be hidden like it's a big secret and never spoken about, so I was very outspoken about it to my children because I wanted them to be educated that stuff like this does happen.
I am pretty sure that Hua Chenyu had an abusive childhood. He spoke about growing up alone and lonely from an early age. The abandonment was so profound that he was completely unable to relate to other people. Music provided an outlet and link to outside world. Music healed him and enabled him to express himself and purge all the pain and grief. I don't think he wants to necessarily hurt his father by speaking about it but his performances speak for themselves. I watched the close up version of this performance and the look in his eyes, the pain, that's real. No one would choose to cover this song if they can't relate to it. This song is too dark to do it for any other reason but being able to relate to it, and the need to speak out for that helpless child that was unable to protect his mother and himself from the wreath of his drunken father. This subject is close to my heart. If you are able to learn from those experiences and use your platform to help others and be a good parent and partner, then the suffering was not in vain. I was just wondering, Fil, what helped you become the well adjusted, balanced, wise person you are today? Was there a role model or mentor in your life who made a difference? And did your father at any point take accountability for his actions, acknowledge his mistakes, has he changed or is he still the same? Mine sadly has not.

I am sorry that the fancam could not film the audience. Some people were crying; one young couple had their hands up in prayer position and were praying for HuaHua. Everyone assumed that it must be his story, but it isn't, though the story of his childhood is not a happy one. Jay Chou wrote these heart-wrenching lyrics based on a story told to him by a friend who had tossed back a few and told the story of his childhood. So it is a real true story--just not HuaHua's and not Jay Chou's.
