I'm banking on Oda tying devil fruit ressurection into a very old plot point for the strawhats. At some point a very important devil fruit, or a fruit from someone they care about will appear in Nami's Mikan grove on the Thousand Sunny. I'd bet it'll either be a fruit that would suit Nami that she'd eat as it's from her Mikans, or it'll be Sabo dying and the Strawhats not realising until later they have the meramera no mi.

I have this strange feeling that your heart transforms in the shape of the DF you've consumed, and if you were to eat their heart then you'd be essentially eating their DF. This theory makes sense when you consider why one person can't eat two and why Blackbeard seems to be the only one who can. If you were to eat two, then two Devil Fruits would counteract one another and result in your heart exploding. On the other hand, Blackbeard is at the center of a theory that he's not entirely human but some octopus / Kraken / being with three hearts, similar to how Pudding is a descendant of a tribe with three eyes (fishemen can take on human forms upon maturing). So it's likely Blackbeard put up the tarp to obscure his Devil Fruit stealing process, which was carving and eating Whitebeard's heart. This last point is not too quickly proven for the simple fact that shirtless Whitebeard has a scar where his heart would be. One logia One pharamecia and One Zoan type each respectfully. 2.
