This made me want to learn cello. Such a beautiful instrument.
+ThePumpkin506 it absolutely is! give it a try! :)
+mathias johansen Tuba's my primary instrument, baritone is a work in progress, and piano's secondary, but I don't think I'm bad at it. I'm mostly a brass guy but if I had to choose a string it would definitely be cello. I love the range and overall sound of it. If I ever get the time, I will try to learn it.
+ThePumpkin506 keep me posted on your progress!
+mathias johansen will do!
ThePumpkin506 how’s ur progress bro, it’s been 4 years
Wonderful performance! There’s this wonderful optical illusion that you are suspended in midair.
It’s almost part of the magic you are performing.
Your technique is sooo damn good.
haha, this illusion was not really planned. thanks for your words!
I've heard several performances of this piece but never this beautiful. Goosebumps!
Thank you, Mirjam!
You bring out the glissandi so well. I must say this has to be my favorite interpretations of this piece.
Thanks!
Garrett P Glisando
revisiting this video in 2020 because this is my favorite cello piece i've ever heard, and also this is the most polite comment section i've ever seen on a video.
Thanks, Emmanuel, don't know why they're so polite, but I'll take that. Thanks for te comment and stay tuned for some more recent videos coming up.
Unbelievable accuracy in your technical ability, but also complimented with incredibly mature phrasing. Wow!
Thanks! I'm really glad you noticed. I think especially the phrasings are one of the toughest parts in this sonata.
This playing is just magnificent. I'm always amazed at the depth and breadth of material composed by Ligeti, contemporary classical, polytonal, folk, theatrical, film score, noise, you name it....
Thanks Eugene, Ligeti is great. This Sonata still has something special, as it seems to be different from his usual "language".
the prince of music
My favorite instrument that holds all the sorrow of the world.
Thanks, I totally understand what you mean!
Dieses Cello klingt einfach unfassbar schön. Natürlich nicht zuletzt weil es grandios gespielt wird.
I aspire to play the cello as beautiful as this one day
Thanks #practice
thank you, and all the others, for the nice comments! i'm blushing ... :)
Beautiful music and perfect performance!
Catching the soul.....
Brilliant! I love ligeti, you did a great work! Come to Portugal and I will definetly see you!
Surprisingly lively and unique! Wonderful!
Absolutely wonderful!
Found this by chance. From the opening few notes I knew I would be in for a treat, not just the music but the performance too. Really appreciate finding this. Thanks
Bravo!! Really a stunning performance I enjoyed a lot listening ...
I've heard it again today. I really love your performance: the sensuous pizzicati, the lyricism, the impetuousness onset of the second movement...
Amazing, I’ve listened to this recording for years. Now I’m playing it and still take this video for reference. It’s just so good!🫠😅
Haha thanks Karret. Its reaaaally long ago and somehow got some traction. I still like some aspects of it, some others not…
This performance is astounding, I'm getting goosebumps from it!
thanks a lot!
Why doesn't anyone talk about what a genius gyorgy Ligeti was
Right? However, he himself didn't really like this sonata, sadly ...
Because he wasn't
...or the concept of Genius as a general proposition
That is a very interesting topic.
You go first
I will follow you.
@@mathiasjohansencellist I am gasping to read this. How strange to hear a piece of music which grabbed me decades ago wasn't similarly regarded by the one who "birthed" it... To that end, may I thank you for your heartfelt rendition. Bravo. 🙋💓🙏
@@mathiasjohansencellist I heard it played 15 yars ago and it was so fresh in my memory. He disliked the influence Bartok had over his early work. Since I like Bartok too, I can not see anything evil in this. It was probably difficult for Ligeti to become wholy independent of this overwhelming influence.
One of my favorite cello sonatas with such a beautiful performance! Bravo! Now i wanna learn this piece :)
you should! let me know when you have.
love the sound of the cello great job
wow, those are really emotional words! thanks a lot!
I love it!
Fantastic!
Maestro!
You are a great performer ! Thank you for this wonderful Sonata.

Schönes Lied. Danke für's hochladen..
Spot on, EXCELLENCE!!!
Hermosa interpretación, de las mejores que he escuchado, espero algún día poder verle en vivo. Saludos desde Argentina.
Thanks, Micael! =)
this is an amazing performance. Thank you!
Excelent playing!, I´d love to listen you playing Kodaly´s sonata, great job Mathias!!
Sounding good! I still have fond memories of us playing Mafia that summer in Lubeck. Good times.
Hey Victor! Nice to hear from you and thanks for listening! Its a pretty old recording, many things have changed ;) So I hope you'll have some time to check out the new Ligeti after I upload it.
Yeah, Mafia in Lübeck! That was fun and REALLY long ago now :D
What an interesting piece. Thanks for sharing!
Breathtaking
thanks!
its a cello made by joseph antonius rocca in turin 1839.
its not mine, its from a german foundation, who support young musicians. deutsche stiftung musikleben
mathias johansen Your cello reminds of my Vuillaume, which may have been made in the same year. They are cousins!
Bravo on a fine performance! I am so pleased so many cellists have been learning and performing this wonderful piece to which I was introduced via Perenyi’s Hungarian CD. Yours is among the best!
@@cellohood thanks indeed!
This is truly an admirable performance.
I love atmosphere of Ligeti's music.
+MGH cnsGABA thank you! ligeti is just fantastic. Also this sonata, even though he himself didn't really like it so much.
+mathias johansen Thank you. You are so wonderful Ligeti player.
Oh, my goodness, it was amazing... Thank you!~
A lovely, sensitive performance.
epic!!! cant wait to learn that staff!!
Absolutely amazing. Well done! x
thanks, david!
really nice he has personality! I love strings!
My soul was out of this world while i was listening this Sonata.
I'm so happy you enjoyed it like that! not many people have this gift to let go!
Splendid!
Bravo!!! Une des plus belles versions, j'adore les phrasés, le rubato du 2ème mouvement.
merci beaucoup! =)
Great performance for a sublime piece! Thank you Mathias! After this wonderful moment, I think that I'm going to listen to Kodály's Cello Sonata opus 8..
+sonicsnap117 Still have to work through that one before I can make a video-post on it!
BRAVO!!!!!
somptueux violoncelle ,, quelle musique fascinante mêlant le classique à un modernisme subtil ,, merci pour le partage ,,
incredible wow!!
Beautiful !
Thanks
great performance. very coherent, gorgeous sound
Fantastic!
so good!
great interpretation , congratulations
beautyful!
one of my favorite sonatas. thanks
you honor me, thank you!
I really enjoyed listening to your performance. You have great technique and I love your sound. Thank you for inspiring me to become a better cellist as well as providing me some helpful ways to get through this work. I just started the Dialogo, slowly working my way across the Capriccio movement. Hope to see you in Germany when I'm there!
Thanks! Just wait for the new recording, its way better - I think. Write me when you're here or if you have questions.
Bravo. So Ligeti did in fact write music with high musical value, as opposed to literally trying to harm the fingers of various pianists!
Sad story is: I think he really didn't like this piece so much. Maybe, because its a really early work and he felt like its a bit "childish"?
Sublime..
He has no chair! :D
i almost thought you had written "he has no hair" … phew
He has a piano stool
Stefan Hansen he dose have a chair
Holly molly
a lényeget te is megfogtad!
This is excellent, bravo.
congratulations, absolutely beautiful
amazing *-* I'm stunned
thank you so much!
GREAT!!! WONDERFUL!!!
je respire dans les profondeur sonore , elles m'indiquent que cet instrument est unique pour retrancrire des passages de vie
Phenomenal! Thank you.
+Knox Bronson Thanks for listening and taking the time for a comment!
you are the best cellist!!!! wonderfully good!!! a big hug!
magnifique et profonde
Fantastic thanks for post
very inspiring!
Very nice!!
Buena creación y buena ejecución. Debe tratarse de las primeras obras de Ligeti, cuando todavía no rompía totalmente con la melodía.
Bravo.
Man... you look so beautiful playing that cello. Let alone your sound. I'm auditioning to Curtis Music Institute with this piece.
Isaac Clarke thanks a lot, isaac. its a fantastic pieces and you can learn a lot working on it!
SO MUCH! GREAT JOB!!!!!!!!!!!! LIKE!
Great performance, amazing skills !
Could you tell me a little bit about the instrument you play with ? thanks a lot
maravilloso
Enjoyed this a lot Excellent.
An incredible piece, completely unexpected (for me, I only knew the more symphonic stuff) and brilliantly, soulfully played. Wow. So sorry to discover it only now --- hope Mathias went on to have a brilliant performing career, besides being a professor.
Thanks, Iliscia, for the words. Its a great piece and even though its quite challenging, its a lot of fun to dive into and get los.
I will be posting more recent material to this channel in the near future, so I'd be happy to hear from you again.
Matthias, I really love your Ligeti. Are you coming back to Cervo? I am very grateful for the great concert you give to my dearest Mother. She was very deeply moved.
What a beautiful adagio and so well played! I am working on those glissandos without much success.:-(
how did it go with the gliss? The adagio is - to me - the harder movement. The Capriccio comes hard to learn, but to play in concert the first one is the one to take really good care of. Also thos glissandos...!
Soberbia interpretación. La aplaudo.
bravo!
Great!...Thank you!....
Masterful playing btw Mathias!
+Kevin Crossley Thanks a lot :)
thank you.
Maravilloso!!! realmente buena interpretación.- Me encantó!!! :D
"Wonderful! really good interpretation. - I loved! : D" is that correct?
thanks a lot =)
mathias johansen
yes, that's right :D I hope to see you sometime in concert in Chile.- I'm just starting with violoncello.-
good luck for that and enjoy! I also hope to come to chile one day.
Amazing esecution!
Thanks!
Super good performance. Your tone is perfect. Can you please share what strings, tailpiece, bridge, rosin you use? Please!
Sorry, Raul, I'm really late with this. Somehow I forgot about youtube and the comment section. Strings usually Larsen or Thomastic (Rondo). Bridge depends on the cello - I dont play this cello anymore. Rosin, either Leatherwood (we have a collab) or Cecilia. Keep it up!
Thankyou . Fantastic . Thankyou
Most welcome 😊
i played this for an audition a couple years ago. i didn't make it, but i'm re auditioning with the same solo and hopefully i get it!
Sorry to hear that! Ligeti takes practice on stage to feel free and inspired, so just keep going! It will work eventually, for sure!
This is so beautiful... and intense as well.
+Emmy Holguin Thank you Emmy!
mathias johansen You are more than welcome! You should upload more videos mate!
+Emmy Holguin You're so right! I have lots of material on my disk also, but its not yet put together with the sound recordings and some are not cut yet. It really takes time to have a nice video. A recording of Dvorak Cello concerto is coming soon!
mathias johansen Looking forward to it!
Its there! at least parts of it. Check it out: DVORAK CELLO CONCERTO 2nd mov | Mathias Johansen | Per Borin and DVORAK CELLO CONCERTO 1st mov | Mathias Johansen | Per Borin

Very good Interpretation.
I play the violin and I love this piece, I love the cello
Do ya still play violin?
Haha nice one!
This is wonderful! Thank you for sharing, I really enjoyed it.
Hey Daniela, unfortunately I'm not sure if i can make it this summer but I will for sure come back - the delicious olive oil is empty! So it must, at the latest, be next year then! It was a pleasure for me to play for her. Such a nice birthday party! Hope you all are doing well and thank you for the kind words.
