    Growing up in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), we had fuel rations due to economicsanctions. We would use kerosene, which wasn't rationed, to run a Honda 50 Cub. For starting, petrol was used, then switched to preheated kerosene, which flowed through a copper pipe that had a wrap around the exhaust.
    We were just kids experimenting to get around the hardships we were dealt. These videos kind of remind me of my childhood.

      My uncle spent many happy years in Rhodesia, he exported Rhodesian wine to the UK and made an absolute fortune from his Salisbury home, a shame it all went bad over there as it was such a lovely place... I have heard the oil shortage in Zimbabwe is so bad they had to dust off all their old steam engines otherwise trains would just not run in the country lol

      Pre heating isn't really needed once the engine is warm, but it's not a bad idea.

    The mixture of kerosene, castor oil and ether is the fuel that "diesel" model aircraft engines use. Most of these also have variable compression ratios. You back off the compression until the engine starts to miss, then raise it just enough to restore smooth running.

    • @atvheads
      @atvheads 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

      All diesel model engines has a variable compression, and the old recipe was 1/3 kerosene, 1/3 engine oil and 1/3 ether. Then there are semi diesels, they had a glow plug instead of variable compression, and runs on 80% methanol and 20% castor oil. But there are different oils to, and nitro methane is often used.
      I guess that this engine would be happy with say 10% nitro methane.

      I remember experimenting with fuel composition as a school science project, closely related to my aeromodelling hobby.

    I used to do RC model aircraft flying, back in the 1980's. The aircraft used a John Oliver 3.5 diesel 2 stroke motor and was fuelled with Ether & Castor Oil. The aircraft was always covered in a sticky mess, after a day's flying and required cleaning. The John Oliver 3.5 diesel had variable compression, via a screw on the cylinder head.
    I've witnessed a CZ 250-471 Sport twin cylinder 2 stroke run on TVO (tractor fuel). It completed 31,000 miles like this, as a farm runaround work bike for 21 years. My friend bought it from a retired farm worker and it has been residing in his garage since the late 1990's. It still runs fine on the recommended 33:1 petrol-oil mixture, these days.
    Another CZ 250-471 Sport, turned up at a motorcycle rally, running on a concoction of cooking oil and methylated spirits, way back in the early 1990's.

    Try 1:1 diesel/gas ratio in it. It was in user manual as a possible fuel with 4% oil, but add like 10% oil for better lubrication.

    this is great. thank you for sharing. i thought this technology was from scale model air planes. Back in the 1990s i bought a 1/10 scale gas truck. then i found a diesel head conversion kit from Davis Diesel Development. had more torque and more RPMs than glow feul. smelled like a Greyhound bus. i later modified the cylinder head to my two stroke dirtbike and ran Davis Diesel fuell in it. it worked. but i needed a variable compression head. my head volume stock was 12cc and i went to 7 cc wich was close to 20:1. today i still believe that it would be competitive if i could develop it more. thanks again for sharing

    As a professional mechanic it was sometimes a bit bitter to see how you treated this motor during overhaul.
    Good tools are a must. Using different screwdrivers (at least use 2 identical ones and use some Textile TESA adhesive tape "Gewebeklebeband" as protection on the lever surfaces) to pull a bearing or the like is unfair for this rare oldtimer motor.
    I forgive you alltough because you filmed everything xD .
    Please - next time use correct pullers and USE your Press! (You have one!, I don't but I have a fine lathe and a fine mill)

Problem ist nur, wie im Video, dass man es extrem lange zum Anlaufen braucht, weil es heiß werden muss damit der Motor läuft. Also lange treten. Tu dir das ja nicht an, das Ding macht keinen Spass.

    th-cam.com/video/HZFX_ZDdnAM/w-d-xo.html Trip with Lohmann bicycle auxiliary engines Diesel engine near Lilienthal near Bremen in northern Germany on August 9th, 2009.
    The Lohmann engine is a multi-fuel two-stroke internal combustion engine with compression ignition.[3] Its functionality differs from that of both the Otto and the diesel engine. Fuel is mixed into the intake air in the so-called mixer, so the engine has external mixture formation. The torque is adjusted by throttling the mixture with a slide. After pre-compression in the crankcase and overflow, the prepared fuel-air mixture is compressed so highly in the combustion chamber that it ignites itself. Since the Lohmann engine does not have a preheating device, the energy required for self-ignition during a cold start must be achieved in another way. To do this, the compression ratio can be increased by moving the cylinder liner by hand. When the engine has warmed up, the compression is reduced again. This also makes it possible to adapt the engine operation to the type of fuel used. The fuel used in the Lohmann engine should be as ignitable as possible, i.e. have a high cetane number.

The only thing you needed, was patience.... with best wishes....Now, I´m 75 years old and ride two old Yamahas, a XV 750 SE 5G5 special from 1984 and a SRX 600 1 XL, one cylinder 4-stroke from 1989, which has only a kickstarter and needs sometimes 8-12 kicks to start, but it´s fun to drive this bike......

    QUESTION: could you add an electronic circuit to control the variable compression along with sensors to monitor the engine temperature? It would be nice to create an automatic version of this engine so all you would have to do is ride and change fuel when it gets low.

    I had a 1976 Datsun pickup truck that I had for five years. The years took their tole on the ancient truck. When I became financially stable, I decided to experiment with the Datsun since I had bought a new vehicle. I decided one day to fuel it with diesel. That pickup truck ran far better on diesel and went much further. However, the pickup truck left a fog bank behind it everywhere it went. Turning off the engine was an adventure. I would turn off the key and the engine kept running in a very sickly fashion. I had to go under the bonnet and put a lid over the air intake.

    Isn't Ether actually counter productive? It and start spray in general behave more like gasoline, so they will actually increase the fuel's resistence to self-ignition under compression, which is the opposite of what you want in a Diesel engine (or a multi-fuel engine that relies on self-ignition).

    • @EbenBransome
      @EbenBransome 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Squirting ether into Diesel intakes when cold is a well known way of getting them to start.
      Adding ether doesn't affect the cetane rating but it does mean that any ignition at all spreads faster.

    • @NullHand

      Ethers are condensate molecules composed of 2 alcohols (usually methanol) joined by a fairly unstable -O- bond made by removing an H2O out of the two -OH on the alcohols.
      When this fragile bond breaks at ignition temps, it forms alkyl and -O* radicals that then go around brutalizing any nearby molecules, which is why it works so great as a starting fluid in compression AND spark ignition engines.

    That engine should make about 1/4 to 1/2 of a horse power if it was a well designed system. It really should be spinning faster than what it seems to be and the exhaust pipe looks too short. The exhaust pipe can matter a lot on a two stroke diesel engine. It can work to help get all of the exhaust out of the cylinder so the next cycle uses only fresh air.

    Try some linseed oil, burns very well in 2 stroke engines and was once used as a basis for racing 2 stroke motorcycles but you don't want to run it neat as it will put a hole in your piston so needs to be heavily mixed with something less energetic. I ran my first motorcycle using a good dollop of linseed but man it smells bad, I killed my first Vespa using linseed as I did mix it linseed heavy and boy did the 125cc Primavera top the 90 mark it soon died with a melted piston crown and lots of piston bits mangling up the internals...

    You could send a sample of the fuel to a lab to get it analyzed. This way you'd find out the composition and ratios of its constituents.
    Alternatively, you could distill it and get a hint of which substances are in there and how much, by observing the temperature of the vapor from each fraction that comes over.

    This little engine reminds me of the diesel engines that I used to power model aeroplanes many decades ago. Have you tried that fuel? It was ether and castor oil, if my memory serves me well. Readily available.The main problem here is that 18ccs are justnot enough. 25 might do the trick. Fascinating stuff, nonetheless. 🫣
