XTool D1 DIY Laser Enclosure that fits the stock Honeycomb Bed

  • The XTool D1 laser is one of the best diode-based laser engravers available in 2022. Using them indoors without ventilation leaves smoke rolling about your workspace. So it was time to make a custom-built enclosure to contain the smoke and vent it out using an inline fan and 4-inch flexible hose. We also built this enclosure around the optional XTool honeycomb bed. This bed helps improve airflow around your material to keep cuts clean.

    I am so glad I didn't start cutting my wood for my enclosure yet. I have it all measured and marked out, but you pointed out some things I never even thought of. I was trying to go off the size of the wood I already have, to cut down on how much cutting I need to do. I am a newb, and not comfortable with power saws, but I bought a circular saw anyways, and taught myself how to use my bosses huge a$$ table saw(I think that's what it is...its huge and scary). Turned out to NOT be as scary as I anticipated :) I asked him 2 months ago to cut some wood for me so I can build a work bench...he still hasn't cut it, which is why I did it myself LOL. I didn't even think about the air flow coming from two different levels depending on what job I am doing, and I didn't even think about allowing myself to be able to take the machine out of the enclosure if I need to. I also didn't realize I could cut holes for all connecting plugs so they can be on the outside of the enclosure. I wanted to do that originally, but had it in my head that everything had to be IN the enclosure. Revamping my plans now LOL. Thank you so so much for this! Very informative and extremely helpful!

I'm totally new to the XTool engraver/cutter that I recently bought unfortunately I'm thinking about returning it since I do not have a workshop to operate from- but thanks for your previous videos! i have also no workshop.you just need a window where the fumes can go out everything else you can arrange by yourself.If you build an enclosure it should be bigger than the laser and also possible to take out everything because it might be that you have projects what are bigger than your frame or enclosure.so it is always good to have a garage or some more room for bigger projects.also a table saw will help you a lot when you want be able to cut the pieces in the right size if it is wood.

    Your exhaust fan should be as close to the outside vent as possible. What you have now puts positive pressure on the hose, so any tiny leaks blow smoke into the room. If the fan is at the outside vent, the hose is under negative pressure, so the worst that a leak does is suck a little room air into the hose.

    • @Vintauri
      @Vintauri  ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct, I only had it set up that way for the video while on my workbench in the shop. Inside I have the fan just before the wall vent outside.

    Excellent enclosure! Thanks for the content and tips! I'm thinking of making one myself, but would like to incorporate an adjustable bottom shelf. Whether that be manual or slide-driven remains to be seen. Currently I have a manual shelf that I can slide in different levels, depending on the size of the object I'm engraving, but no enclosure. Again, thanks for the inspiration!

    I made my own (in progress) of your enclosure. I couldn't wait on the plans LOL! I posted the build in the xTools D1 forum in case you want to check it out. I made a few small changes. A hinge on the front panel. I am going to use sliders for the D1, not a fixed shelf. And I am thinking of cutting a 20 x 20 inch hole in the base so I can lift it to accommodate deeper objects if needed. I am using a six inch duct since I already have a 6 inch in line fan. Great inspirational video!

    I love the enclosure, and can fully understand why you don't want to go into manufacturing of them. However, you could sell the plans in both PDF form with cut files/materials, etc. And possibly even the CNC files needed to recreate it exactly as you have it. That way others can take over the manufacturing of it.

      I was using up some paint I had on hand, plus it's an exterior rated paint that will be more durable and easier to clean. It also help reflect the light inside the case making it easier to see. I have no disillusions that it will get a bit dirty over time.

      Great video and love the build. Any concerns about making the enclosure out of wood based products? The OEM ‘tents’ advertise as fire resistant. What is likelihood of catching enclosure on fire?

    That enclosure looks pretty sweet man. If you had any plans for it would be cool to see those. While I don't have a laser just yet this was one of the things I feel is a must have when using one. Will be interesting to see what xTool releases for their enclosure, but would be pretty hard pressed to be as nice as yours.

    • @Vintauri
      @Vintauri  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is primarily made from 1/2” plywood. I slide in the sheet metal on the bottom to help protect the base from any laser beams that make it through the material and never run it unattended in case of a flare up. I do have the plans and build guide available. The link is in the video description. Thanks for checking it out!

    This is awesome Steve, you have done a wonderful job in both design and function. I bought the plans from Etsy and am waiting for the parts to come in from Amazon for the build.

    Love the design! D1 Pro user here! I currently use a Creality enclosure which I despise! The supporting rods have excessive flex which causes the enclosure to bow allowing smoke to reach the outside despite having adequate exhaust! I've had to resort to stuffing plastic bags along the bottom to seal it. Question on your enclosure: You said that you would modify the honeycomb bed rails and extend them further to the rear. Was this mod included in the current plans? Keep up the great builds Steve! Ya done good!

    • @Vintauri
      @Vintauri  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the kind words. I did make the changes in the plans that are available on Etsy. So you will have more flexibility in the honeycomb spacing.

  • @omere30
    @omere30 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi, really like the way it came out. I'm curious to know why you preferred to mount the laser and honeycomb on the small shelf instead of using the original raisers and to build spacers for the honey comb? I think it can simplify the build a little bit.

    • @christopherriley403
      @christopherriley403 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I can answer. With the laser being placed on a built in shelf it is already lifted to the required height to use a rotary. Without the shelf you have to install the original risers every time you want to use a rotary, that would take time and after awhile become a nuisance. Plus if the shelf isnt there, then you would have to keep track of the leg risers...i dunno know about you, but i am ALWAYS misplacing (not loosing) things; so with the shelf already installed to the height you need to use the rotary, then you have no need for the leg risers.

  • @lynnkull5976

    Nice design Steve.
    Wondering if your cutting paper or something thin will it provide some suction to hold the material in place on the honeycomb?
    My old C02 laser would do this and was useful. Thanks for the video Lynn

    • @Vintauri
      @Vintauri  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you have the space to enlarge the enclosure to move the air outlet to the bottom as much as possible, it should create a downdraft situation that would also help hold paper down to the honeycomb panel. This design will pull the air across the top and bottom of the panel, so it might not have as much hold down effect. I usually just add some thin rare earth magnets to hold paper in place.

    • @Vintauri
      @Vintauri  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'll have to try to double check, the footprint of the S30 should fit in there, but I don't recall if the laser head sits up too high without modifying the design a bit for the Sculpfun.

    ordered the etsy file and got the box all cut out today. Really going well and easy to follow instructions. 2 Questions for you, I don't have access to a CNC for the front panel to cut all of those air slots. Thinking about cutting 4 parallel slots the (almost) full length of the panel on my router table either 1/4 or 3/8ths. Thoughts? Second question, what is the name of the switch you use to control the lights on the top of the box? Thanks!

    • @Vintauri
      @Vintauri  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m sure the slots you are suggesting should be fine. Just make sure to keep enough “meat” on the board that it’s stable. The switch for the lights is a simple 12v limit switch. Here is a link to some that will work. amzn.to/3OdofJ6
