I think Matt from the Super Gaming Bros put it best with Scar's character "He's the type of guy who craves and lusts for power, and once he has it he has no clue what the fuck to do with it"
+Red Lantern Reviews IMO what Scar really wanted was not to be overshadowed by Mufasa. I don't even think he wanted power for its own sake, but mostly as a way of proving that he could best his brother. But then he became king and everything fell apart and from there . . . I think he just didn't know what to do, other than to cling to the throne and pretend everything was just fine.
can you imagine the lions telling the gazelle about the circle of life......."so we eat you, then when we grow old and die, we rot, grass grows, and you get to eat the grass"....."umm king mufasa, sounds like we are getting the short end of the stick"
+Aaron Beaulieu Hehehe, that's one of the greatest lies in the plot. However, the very idea of any kind of "equilibrium" in an echosystem is false. There's only the semblance of a balance bacause predators keep the herbivores in check (by wholesale slaughter insofar as they're able), the herbivores keep plants in check, (by wholesale eating insofar as they're able), and lack of food keeps everyone in check. We humans, whom this film (like many others) tries to demonize are actually an echological problem (and will probably cause our own extinction because of that), because we're too successful: we're made to live to 30, have most of our population die of famine/in childbirth/out hunting, like all the other animals, but we've overcome all those problems, and now have the largest animal population in the planet by far (I'm not sure, but I think only insects and microscopic lifeforms reach to billions of individuals), which is impossible to sustain. But Nature is chaotic, like everything else in reality, except humans, who try to fight against chaos. What Mufasa tells Simba is actually a sugar-coated lie.
+Aaron Beaulieu The lions also prevent the gazelles from overpopulating, which would eventually lead them to starve. Aldo Leopold wrote this about deer and wolves: "I thought that because fewer wolves meant more deer, that no wolves would mean hunters' paradise. Since then I have watched the face of many a newly wolfless mountain, and seen the south-facing slopes wrinkle with a maze of new deer trails. I have seen every edible bush and seedling browsed, first to anaemic desuetude, and then to death. I have seen every edible tree defoliated to the height of a saddlehorn. Such a mountain looks as if someone had given God a new pruning shears, and forbidden Him all other exercise. In the end the starved bones of the hoped-for deer herd, dead of its own too-much, bleach with the bones of the dead sage, or molder under the high-lined junipers."
Yes, fully agree with you. And there goes the notion of Nature as a peaceful and loving state of balance where Man is bad because we are not in touch with Nature. As if it was actually possible to live outside Nature (aka Reality). :D
It's like the federal government. You got your checks and balances. Remove the predators, the rest will roam free. Remove the herbivores, you'll just have plants eventually. Remove the plants and you got nothing. It's why we have hunting limits and what not, it's a delicate process that we are a part of, no doubt, but that we've almost separated ourselves from with all the cities. Thankfully my grandparents had a farm of sorts where I could see so many animals and what not, it gives you a greater sense of amazement at natural things and the beauty of it all.
NOBODY GETS WHY THE WATER RETURNS AFTER SIMBA TAKES OVER! Scar brought imbalance to the circle of life. The hyenas made all the lionesses overhunt, leading to gaps in the food chain. The animals left/were killed off, the ground dried up, etc. When Simba returns, he restores balance. He probably banished the hyenas again or something, the lionesses only took what they needed again, and the animals gradually returned. The scene at the end takes place a long time after the final battle, hence the fade and Simba having a child. The circle of life has been restored. At least, that was always my impression.
Also we don't know how long it took to fix the pridelands because they never actually say but it was also mentioned in the lion guard that simba also worked with other animals to fix the pridelands, in Can't Wait To Be Queen when he went to the elephant funeral and told how the elephant was one of the animals who helped repair the pridelands infering it wasn't a single person job
+MegaSoulhero And in ten years we'll get another movie that gets super popular and people will complain about how that is overplayed and not as good as Frozen. That is the circle of Life.
+Tickmayham42 And frozen does not... because? Lion King had flaws, as does frozen. Timon and Pumba? they are the Olaf of Lion King. Purely therefor comedy and no other use for the story. Simba? Decent character, but nothing massively great. Typical child-learns-to-be-adult-character and typical hero character. Mufasa? He wasn't even a character. He was a plot-point. He taught Simba a little, he died. Mufasa-story is over. Scar? Not that great a villain. He had an awesome song. Killed his brother and then did a VERY bad job as a king and acted like a spoiled brat. The story? As critic said. It is Hamlet with animals. Nothing very original.
Michael Anthony Jenkins Maybe, I personally never found the story that great. It was a point A to point B story-arch. No twists or turns, no surprises. Simba lives with father. Father dies. Simba runs away. Simba finds love interest. Simba returns. Emotional struggle and fight. Happy ever after.
"When he goes back to face his fears, his fears start to win." It's anxiety and trauma. Simba as a child was VERY emotionally traumatized by his father dying and Scar took advantage of it with classic psychological gaslighting. Growing up, Simba was wracked with guilt and found himself believing the lies. So instead of returning to face the "truth" by confronting the other lions, he avoids and withdraws from the situation. Of course it's heavily glossed over and Disney-fied, but I do find it really interesting that there's some psychological themes that I can, unfortunately, relate to and also notice as I grow older.
Disneycember is actually better than Critics actual reviews. He shows he can be a really good critic when he sits down, talks about the movie and SLOWS DOWN WITH THE DAMM GAGS.
+jokesterr119 yeah, but sometimes they can affect them in a bad way.Dont get me wrong, hes funny, but in his Mad Max Fury Road review ge overused to the point where i wouldnt call it a review.More like a parody with some personal opinion.
I know this is old but Doug Walker and the Nostalgia Critic are two sperate people. Nostalgia critic is usually saved for over praising a good or even really just making fun of a bad film. Doug Walker is the actual person who gives his real thoughts.
When it comes to nostalgia critic reviews i don't mind the gags if they're kept short. It's when they try to drag them out that they become annoying. Very rarely will they get a laugh out of me. One of the few exceptions is the chart guys from the lorax review or even some of the ones from the Devil movie.
I know this is two years late but... to the point of scar acting like a child once he becomes king... He wanted to become king all his life; he was under his brothers shadow as a child and his father did not show him as much love. This is my opinion. Throughout the film he plotted to become king, as we see in his first scene he was disappointed his plan to sit and wait for Mufasa to become old and overthrow was not going to happen so he then plotted with his hyena minions (who he was using and not really allying with) to overthrow both. It worked and ultimately he trusted the hyenas enough to kill Simba as a cub. He didn't want a cubs blood on his hands if he was ever discovered. Scar had done everything to get what he wanted and he succeded. Was he going to treat the land with respect? No! He was never parented to respect the circle of life and never had the love he needed from the pride. So in his eyes, the drought brought upon by nature/the great kings of the past was a blessing. He tortured them by feeding the hyenas and himself by letting the hyenas overhunt, barely leaving enough food for the pride who had neglected him as a cub. This was his tyrannical madness, he wanted to rule like this for power and revenge. He never lost any of his brains. He just didn't want to use them for those who he thought didn't matter to him or didn't deserve it. He could have moved them and he KNEW that but he didn't because he believed it was what his kingdom deserved. He got to torture those who he believed mistreated him and got to rule over them. This is what makes him so evil.
I don't think the lionesses were turning on him, more like they were in shock at the wild accusation and didn't know what to think. I don't know, if a prince came back talking about how evil his uncle the king is only to be accused of murdering the former king, I don't know what I'd do either. Would you stay with a shitty king whose minions terrorize you and the land, or do you fight for the king who may have killed his own dad? This is my second favorite Disney movie, only behind Hunchback.
+Raysiclove Even Sarabi actually has the respect for him to ask him directly for the truth in the situation. She certainly still loves him enough for that, but she's gone through a lot by that point in the story. She's lost the most important people in her life, has gone through potentially years (time is kinda iffy in this movie) of abuse, and still has to protect the few people she knows for sure are innocent. If the former lion queen went up in arms over her emotions, you can bet that she wouldn't make a very good queen. She'd be leading her tiny pride of lionesses into a fight against a massive hyena pack and a fully-grown male lion before they even understood the situation. Nala knows that something's wrong with Simba, and that he left for reasons that he refuses to explain. He's quick to anger and originally accepts the leadership of Scar without question. So her formerly thought-to-be-dead friend actually just ran away from home without a solid reason following the death of his father, and is now being accused of murdering him. He then admits that he did kill his father, but the death was accidental. Considering Simba's behaviour when Nala confronted him about his absence, she's probably pretty confused. She knows that he's still her friend and that she loves him, but she also knows that the facts she has aren't lining up the way they should be. In that big confrontation between Simba and Scar, it would be really difficult to tell who is telling the truth. The lionesses know that Scar is an awful person, but they don't know that he killed his own brother or that it's his fault Simba left. In fact, they have no real explanation for why Simba did leave- leaving the scene of a crime makes you a logical suspect. On top of that, Scar has a lot of power backing him up. If he wasn't a force to be reckoned with, the lionesses would have rejected him ages ago- with or without Simba. You don't pick a fight with the king of lions on a hunch.
Wow, you’re favorite Disney animated movie list is close to mine especially when I don’t count the sequels. The Lion King is number one for me, then it’s Tarzan, and then The Hunchback of Notre Dame.😍
Also, the Broadway version is absolutely spectacular! They actually go a bit darker with Scar, showing his childish behavior as being a result of him sinking deeper and deeper into madness as being in a position of absolute power, his repressed guilt about murdering his brother, and his own deep insecurities have twisted and F-ed up his mind over time. It's actually a pretty cool interpretation.
The whole climate thing actually comes straight from Shakespeare. In Hamlet (and honestly, pretty much all his plays), whenever someone "unnaturally" ascends to the throne, it throws off the balance of nature, and he always illustrated that through odd changes in weather, or unexplained behaviors of animals. I thought it was pretty clever that they incorporated that into this movie
This is my favorite Disney movie. The message of taking responsibility for your actions and doing what needed to be done was a message I needed to hear at that point in my life, so it really stuck with me. That along with the standard reasons people like the movie are why it's my favorite.
The message wasn't completely ruined at the end because when simba admit he accidentally killed mufasa ,the lionesses probably would have supported him if they weren't in awe. I mean think about it if you mother and friends figured out you accidentally killed your father they would be in complete awe or against you and when everyone learned scar actually was the murderer it was too predictable to the lionesses so they weren't in awe as much but you could most of the lionesses were still quiet after they heard scar was the killer
Wow... I have to disagree with you Doug. I thought the message was great and not screwed up. To me, Scar seemed to be manipulating Simba again at the end and playing on his insecurities. That's very believable to me because other people have played on my own insecurities in the past and it has even made me back down on certain stances I have taken. Why doesn't anyone stand behind him? Fairytale logic: the King must return on his own. However, I do see where you're coming from, and this IS all subjective.
I don’t think lionesses we’re turning on him. I think they were just in shock, and the pacing is so fast they barely get a second to process this information.
Isn’t that kind of an arc for Simba too? He learns to be less gullible as a future king, and finishes his arc by beating Scar by not falling for a trick, compared to the many times he got tricked by Scar.
well jungle book was good (imo) and I would be interested in seeing another take on this film, but then again it could suck idk I guess we will find out when it comes out but I have some pretty high hopes
The Lioness not helping Simba at first makes a lot more sense than you're giving credit for. Scar was still king so nobody could turn on him or even back up Simba, especially when he was letting his trauma and fear get the best of him. And while Scar telling Simba that he was the true murderer was unnecessary, it did show his true potential when he lets go of his burdens.
The lionesses didn't so much reject Simba before the big reveal, they were just shocked. When Simba slipped off Pride Rock and was dangling off of it while Scar kept monologuing, Nala was genuinely concerned. Before that, the lionesses didn't NEED to step in because Scar was just talking. Also, I don't think it's really fair to say the lionesses were unwilling to help him because he didn't stay "guilty" in front of them for a long enough period of time. If, instead of falling off the edge, Simba had been able to actually stand up for himself, confront Scar with the truth that he's a horrible king regardless of how Mufasa died, and started the battle against him, the lionesses may well have joined in. This especially since Simba didn't get a chance to explain the situation because Scar wouldn't let him, and I honestly think the lionesses would be willing to hear him out -- anything to get rid of Scar and elect a new king. Also: "Nobody stuck up for him." Uh yeah no duh. You admit you may have committed the murder of their king and see who sticks up for you. There are consequences for your actions and those are consequences that, if Simba hadn't been innocent or hadn't proven his innocence, would have had to face after Scar's defeat. As far as everyone knows, he committed a major crime and needed to face that. Don't get me wrong, the movie is far from perfect. It has its issues, mostly with the characterization as the basic plot is solid enough (a few cracks here and there, but not enough to break the plot apart), I just don't think this one thing he mentioned is one of those issues.
Mew Kiichigo but that kinda takes away from the message for me. Basically what happened is don't feel guilty cuz it was never your fault to begin with. Basically don't stick up with someone who you've known as a kid without giving the benefit of a doubt that maybe there's misunderstandings or false accusations.
Simple fix. "Tell them, who is responsible for Mufasa's death?" "I am." "What do you mean? You were just a cub!" "Well, I was in the gorge with Uncle Scar and my roar set off a herd of wildebeests to stampede in there and I would have been crushed if Dad didn't come and save me but then he fell off a cliff. *flashback* No wait, Uncle Scar shoved him off! MURDERER!" *Everyone turns on Scar*
I wonder if the person who went "whoa!" when Scar's paw came down ever watches these, and if he/she knows that he/she is now immortalized in this video lol
I don't think it's overrated. It is one of the most - if not the most - iconic Disney movie of all time. It has some of the biggest themes and lessons throughout it that all tie together well, it plays with all of your emotions, ect. There is so much character development through each character. Not to mention the AMAZING soundtrack, they are all SO different and unique, but each so catchy and tie in so well to the theme/vibe of the movie. Every single time I watch this movie I cry multiple times (no shame). Disney obviously put so much time and work into this film, and as a result it is a MASTERPIECE. Ask almost anybody, and the Lion King is probably their favorite Disney movie.
You're basing your opinion on the ad populum fallacy. I don't care what other people think, I enjoy Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid so much more than The Lion King.
Actually in Dougs defense, he’s kinda right. I watched this movie so many times when I was younger yet I never got that it was about responsibility. The biggest issue with the message is that, Simba’s not actually responsible for his fathers death. How is the movie’s message about taking responsibility for YOUR actions, if Simba isn’t actually responsible but it was his uncles actions? Having Simba only think he’s responsible doesn’t work, because we know it wasn’t actually him who killed his father, and by the end of the film he finds out it wasn’t his fault anyways. In addition like Doug said, Simba probably could’ve died had it not been for Scar telling him he killed Mufasa. A problem that could’ve been fixed had the movie *actually* made Simba at least partially responsible for Mufasas death. Because, when you think about it, Simba actually does nothing for most of the movie. He just goes “I can’t wait to be a king!”, Scar kills his father and makes Simba think he did it. So he runs off to do nothing and fall back in love, until the plot requires him to defeat Scar in the third act. So at least having Scar make Simba kill his father, by actually causing the stampede (instead of the hyenas) would’ve not only given him something to do, but it would’ve actually made him responsible.
So basically what I've gathered from this review is: 1. You dislike the message "Learn from the past" (or don't think it works) because the movie shows side characters not siding with the main character? Even though it's because they have justifiable reasons to stay neutral before they find out Scar killed Mufasa? K. 2. You dislike all the songs, and you've always disliked the songs even before it was cool to dislike them. Now everyone knows how hipster you are. Congratulations??? What do your personal experiences with annoying kids at school have to do with the quality of the movie? 3. You see Scar as a weak villain because he becomes more goofy/childlike once he's happily gained access to the throne he's wanted all his life, even though I'm pretty sure everyone in the whole world gets more chipper once they're happy so this only makes him more relatable. 4. The season changing was obvious, and I do mean obvious, symbolism. Making this pointless nitpick and then dismissing it as if that makes you more lenient towards the movie *NEWSFLASH* doesn't make you any more lenient towards the movie. I know you started hating on it just to be different/"have an interesting perspective", but that doesn't make being a hater okay. This is the first ever Nostalgia Critic video I've disliked.
ColorlessAngelz I think his issue is that the message falls apart because Simms never actually committed the crime. The scene would have bee stronger if instead of Scar revealing the truth Simba had found the strength to fight back anyways. Then the lionesses would have found the strength to forgive him and back the new powerful king. Otherwise Simba doesn’t have to take responsibility for his actions because he found out he was innocent
It always drives me nuts that so many people seem to fail to realize the role of the king in The Lion King. The king isn't king of the lions; he's king of the Savannah. He's in charge of everything. I don't know if maybe the movie didn't telegraph this well, but I feel like they did try to make that clear. The talk that Mufasa has with Simba while he's trying to explain what it means to be king does exemplify that. While Simba sees things in very simplistic terms, Mufasa tells him that everything in the land is in a balance and that being in charge of everything, the king must maintain that balance. Aside from that, I believe it's directly after that that Zazu informs Mufasa about all of the goings on of the other animals, implying that he has to take all their needs into account and act accordingly. Even in the song "I Just Can't Wait to be King," while Simba is talking all about how great it would be when he's king, Zazu is constantly echoing back at him that that's not the way to be king. And this is the reason why the Pride Lands turn into a wasteland under Scar's rule. People think this is a plot hole, but I don't think it is. I think it was built up to. From the beginning, it's shown that all Scar really wants is power. He never talks about what he'd do if he were king or even that he has any idea of what it means to be king. He just wants to be king because he wants to be king. He even echoes some of Simba's simplistic, childish attitudes over what it means to be king. And that's why the Pride Lands suffer. If there's one thing I think they may have been able to do better, it's probably relaying the type of job Scar's doing, not just what he's done at the end. However, it's clear that Scar didn't understand the balance of the land and all the beings in it. This isn't ever stated, but I think Scar probably didn't care much for the needs of his subjects. As such, he probably allowed them to overuse resources, such as the water and grasses. Aside from which, he allowed a sort of merger between the lions, who are predators, and the hyenas, who are scavengers. Rather than leaving them to forage for food, he allowed the hyenas their share of meat, which probably lead to over-hunting. My impression was always that Scar just kind of allowed whatever would happen to happen and that lead to the eventual depletion of all resources. The only thing I can't really buy is that the weather got that bad under Scar. It seems like the Pride Lands would had to have been in bad shape for a really, really long time for it to actually affect the climate. That said, nobody ever said that his rule caused a drought. People just assume that, due to the lack of vegetation. However, like I said, that was probably due to the over-consumption of vegetation, allowed to go on by Scar, not necessarily caused by a drought. The pieces, here, seem clear to me and the reasons the characters are the way they are seem clear to me. They all seem to play to the theme of balance and life being interconnected and affecting each other. I suppose the movie could have done better to telegraph all that, like I said. But the message is there, even if you need to listen a little harder for it. But it really gets me that so few people tend to realize these parts of the film and put them all together, making people think that there are plot holes that aren't there.
I feel the exact same about Frozen, but The Lion King is my favourite animated movie of all time and I disagree almost entirely with his points. It is one of the strongest of Disney´s works, it is an amazing film. I can understand why he feels that way though.
My top three favorite movies of all time are: 1.- The Lion King 2.- Cinema Paradiso 3.- Forest Gump I really think Doug misread some things on TLK story, and while I respect his opinion, I really can't understand his complaints about the characters, music and lessons about this movie. No film is perfect, and TLK it's no exception to the rule, it has it's flaws, but in my opinion it is the Disney's greatest masterpiece.
Learning from your past instead of running from it is such a timeless message. I still constantly tell myself that to this day. And this movie taught me that. And for that this movie will forever be special to me because of it. Also I do agree Be Prepared is the best song. But I do love the other songs too.
I used to reenact the Scar pushes Mufasa off the cliff scene on a box with some bunkbeds my parents got for my sister and me as a kid. I just loved doing that. I think I like it more now
+Adolf Kitler He likes the lion King. Did you even watch the video, before commenting? I mean it sounds like you commented before watching, which in that case, is a VERY stupid thing to do.
Adolf Kitler No. You said he disliked Lion King, which is just a blatant lie. Maybe you should think twice before commenting? Besides the same could be applied to you. "It's almost like you have nothing better do to than falsely accuse people of stuff on the internet."
Ok, Doug. I have an argument for your issue with the message. While you have a point about how the Lioness aren't on his side when he admits to being responsible for his father's death, in the movie's defense, maybe perhaps we're supposed to assume that since Scar took over, they have lost all power and courage to stand up for themselves or any family members. Maybe they felt that if they tried to get on Simba's side and stop Scar from cornering him, the hyenas would attack them. And because when Scar finally admits that he killed Mufasa, the lioness stricken with betrayal from the lie they've been living suddenly feel unafraid to attack Scar. I just don't think they would have had the courage at first to stand up to Scar when Simba says he's responsible. Especially considering there is so much to process. Simba suddenly returns when they all thought he was dead and then he drops the bombshell that he is the reason Mufasa died. I'm just saying that might be an explanation why they don't do anything when Simba takes responsibility.
That would actually make sense. I mean there’s a deleted scene where Scar shows his dominance and even bring the hyenas as backup if any of the lioness interfere with his reign.
I admit it has flaws, its not a perfect film, but still I can't let those flaws keep me from loving the Lion King. This was the first movie I saw in theatres, and it will always hold a special place in my heart.
Bro, you completely misread the message of the Lion King. It’s not, and never has been, about owning up to your mistakes. It’s about facing your fears, and coming to terms with your past, which, frankly, is a ballsy message for a kids film. The central conflict in the movie is Simba’s inability to confront the most traumatic event of his life, but no matter how hard he tries, he can never completely forget it and who he is. Simba blaming himself for Mufasa’s murder results from him never really dealing with his trauma, and because of that, he never finds out the whole story and never comes to grips with it to understand the whole truth until he makes the brave decision to confront his past. It’d actually be kinda fucked up if the movie suggested that it was baby Simba’s fault for the death of his loving father. I get it; taste is subjective. You can like or not like the music (though I cannot for the life of me understand why you don’t,) but your analysis of the movie’s message is just incorrect.
I wish that they put the madness of king scar (from the musical version) in the movie. I know a version was originally planed, but it develops scar's character a bit more and I wish they kept it in
It wasn't until I saw your Disneycember of this a few years back did I realize: "Holy shit! It didn't just get better in an instant, it was a time skip!" Blew my damn mind when I found that out
This is my all time favourite movie. Nothing can compare. Also, even though I love the songs, it's the score that tickles my pickle. If you don't like the score, I'll fight you so damn hard. Although, even though I adore this movie, I do see its flaws. I should really review the entire Lion King Saga lol (films, shows et al). I think the biggest weakness of TLK, if you could call it that, is also its biggest strength; it's a HUGE story. There's so many big things going on, so many important moments and elements, that it's impossible to elaborate 100% on everything without making the movie longer. Yet, it's so big on every other level, its music, animation and sheer size, the risks it took and the fact that it didn't make kids (or adults!) out to be iant pussies (no pun intended). The whole thing with Scar and the drought is purely symbolic. Also, I think Scar is WAY stronger a character than you give him credit for. He reminds me of Macbeth; wanting to be king and then being all paranoid and flimsy once taking the crown. This flaw in judgement leads to his demise. Timon and Pumbaa work IMO because, as a Shakespearian tragedy, humour is important to keep the audience invested and from NOT becoming depressed (again, the porter scene in Macbeth, Petrie and Spike in TLBT, The Tod in The Plague Dogs). TLK and BatB are, IMO, the strongest of the Disney pantheon; one shows that love isn't perfect, and that love takes time and patience. The other shows that it's important to face your fears and past, accept them and take charge in the face of adversity, and that it's important to relax sometimes too. The Lion King's strengths FAR outnumber the weaknesses; the animation is flawless, the message poignant, the score is bombastic. The message at the end ISN'T botched; when you fight your fear, the fear WILL win at first. It's getting through that and saying SHUT YO DAMN ASS that makes you brave. Yes, the movie has its issues, and that's okay, but it's so damn strong in every aspect, at least to me.
I think it's a strong film in many aspects. I don't agree that it isn't one of Disney's stronger films, but I respect your opinion. It's my second favorite Disney film
Lion King here didn't have the "He Lives in You" song, which I witnessed in a theatrical play. 1 of my favorite songs along with "Be Prepared". I liked it back its release. I like it now still, regardless of discovering its issue(s).
Yes. It is. Though that version, the chorus was a tad too loud to hear the main song singing. The Broadway version was more crisp and clear with the song.
My favorite Disney film of all time this blew my mind when i was a kid, a movie i dont think i will forget in a long ass time ! And that opening has to be up there with UP not on pair but close its almost legendary at this point :)
I'm so glad social media wasn't a thing when this movie came out. Frozen is The Lion King of this generation. Both movies are really good but are overhyped as hell.
No offense on your own opinions 'Nostalgia Critic', but I personally don't see ANY flaws of this film. I just see through my eyes a flawless masterpiece.
+ToxicTV If you have people split on whether "Let it go" is either a great or terrible song, it doesn't astound me that some people aren't huge fans of Hakuna Matata. XD
I get why Hakuna Matata is annoying, but "Just can't wait to be king" and "Can you feel the love tonight" are both fantastic in my book. Circle of life = My favorite opening in any movie ever, not just animation. Be Prepared = Best Villain song, as Scar = My favorite Villain.
If you notice when Simba was being guilt-ed by Scar and nearly fell off Pride Rock, the lionesses were being blocked by the mass of hyenas, when the hyenas went to attack Simba, the lionesses could get through and help him. And when he slipped, Nala did voice concern but couldn't really do anything about it. Yeah, they could have emphasized how helpless they were, but they were also in shock by what they heard; even if it didn't make sense logically to believe a cub would murder his own father. So you think it's a huge flaw, but there's some flaw in your complaint too. And the land flourishing again after Simba's return in contrast with the drought that Scar caused, is metaphorical. I honestly can't believe that neither you or Nostalgia Chick picked up on this. How else were they to portray how shitty a king Scar was using only a natural landscape and G rating? I respect your opinion Doug, even though I heavily disagree with it, but I think this needs a 're-review'.
YOU KNOW WHAT I WISH??? I wish Disney was turning the rest of the NARNIA books into films, instead of these pointless classic cartoon remakes! (They're trying to fix what clearly isn't broken!)
I don't think it is a flaw at all at the end. Scar is the villain of the story. The villain always "exaggerates" a flaw or a sin of the main character. (While the anti-hero exaggerates one of the main characters virtues) In the case of Simba and Scar, the sin is pride, literally one of the seven deadly sins. Scars prideful plan to become ruler was way to perfect all the way through to the climax of the story and he very well managed to trick and gaslight everyone to get his way... until his sin gets the best of him. He couldn't just kill Simba right away, he HAD to tell him that he killed Mufasa, because his overwhelming need for pride forced him to. Even though sometimes evil prevails over good, neither good nor evil are perfect. This is why Scar failed and good prevailed over evil in the end.
My favorite Disney animated movie :) I was never into the "Hakuta Matata", instead I always liked "Circle of Life" and "I Just Can't Wait to be King". They replayed the movie around Christmas and I got to watch again in theaters on my b-day and I even had a Lion King cake. I still have the Simba and Nala figures that were placed on the cake. I also had a baby Simba plushie that I love. ......Damn I feel old now, especially since I turned 30 a few days ago.
Have ever heard of opinions? The lion King was as overhyped and all over the place as frozen, if social media was around back then this movie would have been hated
@@thetrfh Lmao wtf? Why? It's a good movie. Yea sure movies like Frozen get overhyped, but people don't hate them for it. If the movie is good people acknowledge it. And Lion King is a good movie. Do people hate Star When it's over hyped? Your logic is garbage my friend.
Translation: Doug doesnt like Lion King as much as i do? How dare he have an opinion different than mine? I am gonna show him by dissing his favorite Disney movie without any arguments at all.. You know, because thats what people do, right?
I found this movie when going through all my dvds the other day. Watched, and, I love it! Not nearly as bad as doug says! Kinda agree with doug's opinion on the songs, but the rest of the film is fantastic!
Everything about this movie is brilliant and I don't care if you hate Hakuna Matata or Matthew Broderick, you never should have been a reviewer in the first place!
OH! And the reason the grass and stuff comes back is easy to explain. The lions were overhunting the area to feed lions and hyenas, so there were fewer herbivores and detrivores. And I know you're thinking oh but that'd be more grass right. Yeah at first. Over time lions would have to search farther for food and most plants have a symbiotic relationship with animals. Meaning very few plants get seed dispersal and spread. There should still be some species that don't require animals to pollinate and spread, but I get why Disney showed it barren. And since assuming Simba keeps up the food chain like Mufasa did, in time herbivores and plants would return with his reign. That's the one explanation I can think of since many people complain about this. No Simba is not a rain god.
As a counter argument to your thoughts on the botched message, lets not forget that the lie scar told him in the gorge. As a child, you are highly impressionable and being made to believe something at that age leads you to believing that thing your whole life. Scar really set up a nearly full proof trap for Simba in the gorge as he made him believe that roar caused the wildebeest stampede that Scar threw Mufasa into. Plus I don't think Simba saw Scar throw off Mufasa. When Scar told Simba "if it weren't for you he'd still be alive," that was it. That was all he could believe. Simba wanted to confront his fears but Scar back him into a corner dominated by the lie he was told as a child. That lie was all he ever knew. The only reason that the trap was not full proof was no matter how, the truth always comes out in the end and it came right out of Scars Mouth when he was preparing to kill Simba. That's my counter argument, feel free to respond to my argument with one of your own.
How can you think Circle Of Life is okay? How can you hate I Just Can't Wait To Be King & Hakuna Matata? Maybe they overplayed lt, but you didn't say that. You just said lt's annoying & I'm not sure why you think that. I can understand lf lt was overplayed, but was I Just Can't Wait To Be King really overplayed? That's like the For The First Time In Forever of The Lion King. Those are forgivable, but thinking Circle Of Life is okay? This song is so iconic in lt. It starts lt off & ends lt. It gives you goosebumps. It's grand. The African music is catchy. As much as I love Be Prepared, Circle Of Life is undoubtedly better.
NSPcrazY112 Hakuna matata is a bit annoying, I just can't wait to be king is great, so is can you feel the love tonight. my personal favourite thought has to be circle of life. the lyrics are truthful and relatable, and it just sounds amazing. and be prepared is one of my most favourite Disney villain songs of all time
Mufaza is by far the best animated father in animation film history . his death made a huge impact on me as a child and now ! I believe he's the only animated father who is on the poster of the movie and dies ! This movie gets better as I grow up .. It's like Star Wars new hope . just embrace the silliness of it for the greater good !
You make a good point with how the lionesses didn’t defend Simba when he backed up into a cliffside, but I always thought they couldn’t really fight back because the hyenas were defended Scar and Simba was way too close to the edge.
I think Matt from the Super Gaming Bros put it best with Scar's character "He's the type of guy who craves and lusts for power, and once he has it he has no clue what the fuck to do with it"
+Red Lantern Reviews Holy shit! An SGB fan commenting on Doug's video? I'm in heaven. Sorry.
+Red Lantern Reviews SGB FANS UNITE!!
ahh yes, Matthew Matelie, the Vulgar one, the Powerhouse, the Chao Abuser XD
Like a dog chasing a car?
NOM
I think he understood that but he was just confused as to why it came back so quickly.
If he understood how was he confused.
and also didnt they say that there was a drought, i mean its not like africa has a dry and wet season.
*Kimba
Also we don't know how long it took to fix the pridelands because they never actually say but it was also mentioned in the lion guard that simba also worked with other animals to fix the pridelands, in Can't Wait To Be Queen when he went to the elephant funeral and told how the elephant was one of the animals who helped repair the pridelands infering it wasn't a single person job
This movie was the Frozen of 1994. People wouldn't shut up about it. It's one of my favorites.
+MegaSoulhero And in ten years we'll get another movie that gets super popular and people will complain about how that is overplayed and not as good as Frozen. That is the circle of Life.
+Tickmayham42 Frozen deserves the praise same goes for the lion king. So STFU.
Nothing very original.
miniman649 I think its more a collection of Shakespearean elements rather than Hamlet. Which is why I love it so much. Its strengths are its themes.
Fun Fact: This movie is the best selling VHS tape of all time.
"When he goes back to face his fears, his fears start to win."
It's anxiety and trauma.
But gags add to the reviews. It makes it unique and funny compared to a regular review
I HATE this Fury Road "Review"!!!
@@ArtistLunatalia Wow... three years late but that's a great analysis. I actually respect the ending more now.
Yeah but the problem is that it contradicts the message they gave.
Wow, you’re favorite Disney animated movie list is close to mine especially when I don’t count the sequels.
The Lion King is number one for me, then it’s Tarzan, and then The Hunchback of Notre Dame.😍
I actually had the same impression
He really doesn't have too love for this film does he? What the hey everyone has their own opinion. As for me I still adore it no matter how old I am.
Lizafoot For5 He quote on quote loves it, but has his issue. But whatever
He still likes the movie
@@dannyjorde2677, true. He just doesn't praise it like how everyone else does.
RyuTora2808 Does he sings the Be Prepared Reprise in Broadway?
@@jmsg_PR Yep, and it's amazing. The live action remake did this film really dirty from what I've heard...
RyuTora2808 I remember watching it on theaters and it didn’t leave the same impact as the animated one.
The Lion King is hands-down my favorite Disney animated film of all time.
Agreed. If you put any Disney movie against The Lion King, The Lion King wins hands down.
Dude, Frozen is way overrated. The Lion King is a masterpiece.
TheQueenJess fuck frozen had to be one of the worst movies to ever exist
0800sofa I don't dislike Frozen, there are just other Disney movies that are more enjoyable.
TheQueenJess PREACH!!! OH MY GOD PREACH!!
TheQueenJess I love Frozen
Thats sooooooooooooooooooooooooo true!!!!! I am on your site man! :D
I agree "be prepared" is my favorite song from the movie it's diabolical and badass
Agreed
“Fairy tale logic” is never a good excuse. You can explain away just about any writing issue with that, at which point critique becomes pointless.
Isn’t that kind of an arc for Simba too? He learns to be less gullible as a future king, and finishes his arc by beating Scar by not falling for a trick, compared to the many times he got tricked by Scar.
@@unpopularopinions7407 At least Lion King is easy to understand. I struggle to say that with Frozen?????
That still begs the question: why the fuck are they remaking it?

because they ran out of creativity
wickedWitch456 .....they're remaking THE LION KING?!!!
well jungle book was good (imo) and I would be interested in seeing another take on this film, but then again it could suck idk I guess we will find out when it comes out but I have some pretty high hopes

Looking at youtube comments:
"I am surrounded by idiots"
I see what you did there :-)
How so?
The Lioness not helping Simba at first makes a lot more sense than you're giving credit for. Scar was still king so nobody could turn on him or even back up Simba, especially when he was letting his trauma and fear get the best of him. And while Scar telling Simba that he was the true murderer was unnecessary, it did show his true potential when he lets go of his burdens.
Ah, the Lion King Disneycember. Mmmmmmmm, I can already taste the internet rage.
Also:
"Nobody stuck up for him."
Uh yeah no duh.
It actually plays perfectly into the message: Face the past and learn to live with the consequences of your past actions.
Exactly my thoughts.
Jackson Walsh Clever.
@@dannyjorde2677 Doesn't make the OP wrong.
So basically what I've gathered from this review is:
He never said he hated it, there were just some things he disliked. Overall, he likes it fine. Not everyone has to adore Lion King you know.
+ColorlessAnglez the nostalgia critic is a comedy channel. He does reviews, and he thinks that he knows what he is talking about bu the doesn't.
He didn't say that he hates the movie, just that he thinks it's overrated.
Why do you give a fuck? *NEWSFLASH* It's his opinion
That's my thoughts on Frozen, good but overrated.
Wow.
+Xtremegoodburgerfan I feel the same about Frozen... and even Inside Out I feel wasn't as perfect for me to view.
+Xtremegoodburgerfan Overrated cliche...
EthanUnken Yeah, Inside Out wasn't Pixar's best
Xtremegoodburgerfan Yes... I will still say it's an amazing movie! But just many things I felt got in the way of the real interesting stuff.
My top three favorite movies of all time are:
1.- The Lion King
2.- Cinema Paradiso
3.- Forest Gump
I really think Doug misread some things on TLK story, and while I respect his opinion, I really can't understand his complaints about the characters, music and lessons about this movie.
No film is perfect, and TLK it's no exception to the rule, it has it's flaws, but in my opinion it is the Disney's greatest masterpiece.
X Leonhart Cinema Paradiso is great! imo the best of those three
Funny thing Forest gimp and the lion king both came out the same year
This movie is just pure perfect the animation looks so gorgeous and the characters are enjoyable and fun the songs are catchy
Animation is not enough to make a good movie
His father says "Nut Up"...
Well...
Yeah kinda.
I think I like it more now
I personally fell in love with Timon and Pumba as a child through their show "Timon and Pumba".
so you like Frozen but not the Lion King??? i cant even rn
+Adolf Kitler He likes the Lion King. Throughout his career he's said more good things about it than bad. He just doesn't love the Lion King.
+Michael Anthony Jenkins ya, I mean he praised it. He clearly likes it, liking a loved movie does not equal hate.
RafaelDB64 I thought he was Doug?
“Long live the king” is my favorite villain line ever, or at least one of them
I admit it has flaws, its not a perfect film, but still I can't let those flaws keep me from loving the Lion King. This was the first movie I saw in theatres, and it will always hold a special place in my heart.
Kevin Murphy The first comment I wholeheartedly agree with.
The Broadway musical is absolutely amazing the stage the costumes the music number the dancers everything is absolutely perfect
Nah, you read too much into the ending as a kid and you still do
"While I was constantly humming Be Prepared at school, all the other kids were constantly humming Hakuna Matata!"
Literally me XD
I wish that they put the madness of king scar (from the musical version) in the movie. I know a version was originally planed, but it develops scar's character a bit more and I wish they kept it in
0:51
Face it:
You've done this to your cat more than once XD
EXCUSE ME-

YOU DON'T LIKE HAKUNA MATATA?!
Orianna Fernandez ...BURN THE CRITIC 🔥 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Hakuna matata is extremely annoying, if social media was around back then it would have been more hated than let it go
@@thetrfh Tim Rice Said that he originally wanted the lion King to composed by ABBA, but they were unavailable so Elton John was the only option.
I love The Lion King, but I respect your opinion Doug.
i mean he likes it a lot too he just has a few critisicsm
@@brandonayong7656 Yes. I know what you're talking about, but what I'm saying is, I like this film more than he does.
i typically agree with you, but damn dude, the lion king soundtrack is amazing
3:51 So is now a bad time for me to mention that that's the one song from this movie that will NOT be included in the remake?
It wasn't until I saw your Disneycember of this a few years back did I realize: "Holy shit! It didn't just get better in an instant, it was a time skip!" Blew my damn mind when I found that out
my mouth dropped open when he said the Lion King was a bit overated lol I love The Lion King to death
Hahaha Maleficent going "Na na na na na" 😂😂 sorry that made me laugh way harder than it should've
Um........"tickles your pickle"?
Trophies it's just an expression, that's all
+Ginga-Ail1994 I know, I've just never heard it before.
Trophies haha ok :P
I don't like the score.
I love it.
The Lion King Is One Of My Personal Favorite Disney Flims
I think it's a strong film in many aspects. I don't agree that it isn't one of Disney's stronger films, but I respect your opinion. It's my second favorite Disney film
Favorite = ?
Aladdin is my overall favorite Disney film
+Dominic Malnar
You, my friend, are good in my book. ;)
+Matthew Moran Thanks bud!
+Dominic Malnar The Lion King is my #1 and Aladdin is 2 for me.
Uh .. he comes forward and faces his past regrets and THEN finds out it wasn't his fault.
Doug: "On top of that, big shock, I think Matthew Broderick is pretty bland."
Broderick: "Son of a BITCH."
Lion King here didn't have the "He Lives in You" song, which I witnessed in a theatrical play. 1 of my favorite songs along with "Be Prepared".
I liked it back its release. I like it now still, regardless of discovering its issue(s).
+pharaohyami5000 The direct-to-video sequel "The Lion King II: Simba's Pride" had a song called "He Lives in You". Is it the same song?
Yes. It is. Though that version, the chorus was a tad too loud to hear the main song singing. The Broadway version was more crisp and clear with the song.
***** Good to know. Maybe I'll look it up sometime.
This was the first movie I ever saw in theaters so it has a special place in my heart.
Son Goku the lion deserves its hype though
As much as I like the Lion King, there is no doubt the movie would have gotten wrecked in social media, if it actually existed in 1995.
The lion king is way better than that trash frozen pizza you pissy anime fan
Except Frozen is fucking garbage, while The Lion King is good.
No offense on your own opinions 'Nostalgia Critic', but I personally don't see ANY flaws of this film. I just see through my eyes a flawless masterpiece.
Wait, why didn't Mufasa's vision simply told Simba that Scar killed him?
Because it ultimately didn’t matter.
He totally should have, but it really wouldn't match with the tone of the scene
This is my sister favorite Disney movie. My mom made sure This was me and my sister first film we watched in theaters, cause Re-Release.
oh, come on, man! how can you hate those songs? :c
+ToxicTV
If you have people split on whether "Let it go" is either a great or terrible song, it doesn't astound me that some people aren't huge fans of Hakuna Matata. XD
They're pretty average for Disney songs honestly with the main exception being "Circle of Life."
Good point.
@@Logan912 Tim Rice Said that he originally wanted the lion King to composed by ABBA, but they were unavailable so Elton John was the only option.
Saw this in theater in 1994. Doug is right. It's BIG.
It's not even December anymore.
+Shaina Gonzales its old the new ones have 2015 in it
+Shaina Gonzales Originally aired in December 2011
Now it is but in 2018
If you notice when Simba was being guilt-ed by Scar and nearly fell off Pride Rock, the lionesses were being blocked by the mass of hyenas, when the hyenas went to attack Simba, the lionesses could get through and help him.
John Striker YEEEEES
I don't think it is a flaw at all at the end.
Scar is the villain of the story. The villain always "exaggerates" a flaw or a sin of the main character. (While the anti-hero exaggerates one of the main characters virtues)
In the case of Simba and Scar, the sin is pride, literally one of the seven deadly sins.
3:06, the moral is that you should take responsibility for your actions even if so doing doesn’t provide an instantaneous solution
"Doesn't like Lion King that much, falls in love with Frozen." *What The Fu-*
Have ever heard of opinions? The lion King was as overhyped and all over the place as frozen, if social media was around back then this movie would have been hated
@@thetrfh Lmao wtf? Why? It's a good movie. Yea sure movies like Frozen get overhyped, but people don't hate them for it. If the movie is good people acknowledge it. And Lion King is a good movie. Do people hate Star When it's over hyped? Your logic is garbage my friend.
DreamWorks-Uary tho?????
+Ben Cooney I know that, I just wanna know what movies he's doing. I wanna see him do Home
+Ben Cooney Will Smith fish
+Jay Play is scary
+Jay Play That was in February last time they aired since January was the leftover month for Disney stuff he missed.
"How did the water come flowing back?"
Well, the very obvious rainstorm, I'd assume.
Be Prepared is the Best Song!!!
can we all agree the broadway play is phenomenal?
I have never seen it but I want to
Aside from Mufasa being older, I think the reason why Mufasa became king was because he was smart enough to run a kingdom.
Fun fact: in the original drafts Scar publicly snaps Mufasa's neck and sexually harasses Nala
Lion King overrated?! LION KING OVERRATED? You know what, Critic? Fuck Fantasia!
Exactly. And he hated the music? Seriously? Damn you Critic. I'm shaking my fist at you!
lol
yeah, it's like he's not entitle of an opinion different from the rest

I don't think my comment says he ISN'T entitled to his opinion. So am I.
Translation: Doug doesnt like Lion King as much as i do? How dare he have an opinion different than mine? I am gonna show him by dissing his favorite Disney movie without any arguments at all.. You know, because thats what people do, right?
Well of course "Be Prepared" would be YOUR favorite.
The lion king is fantastic and so are all of the songs.
How can hate songs like hakuna matata and can you feel the love tonight, they’re fantastic.
Opinions!
And Hakuna matata IS annoying and stupid

I found this movie when going through all my dvds the other day. Watched, and, I love it! Not nearly as bad as doug says! Kinda agree with doug's opinion on the songs, but the rest of the film is fantastic!
lol that last line, poor Doug
HOW DO YOU NOT LIKE THE SONGS?!?!?!?! THATS ONE OF THE BEST PARTS OF THE FILM
Another thing that made this film feel "huge" was the incredible score
All the songs are great and this film is not overrated!
Literally the opposite of the truth
Everything about this movie is brilliant and I don't care if you hate Hakuna Matata or Matthew Broderick, you never should have been a reviewer in the first place!
You have no life
NSPcrazY112 he has no soul.
NSPcrazY112 Hakuna matata is a bit annoying, I just can't wait to be king is great, so is can you feel the love tonight. my personal favourite thought has to be circle of life. the lyrics are truthful and relatable, and it just sounds amazing. and be prepared is one of my most favourite Disney villain songs of all time
Opinions, ever heard of them?
Kevin Doherty Yeah; & I'm voicing mine.
NSPcrazY112 Hakuna Matata was annoyingly catchy for me
Mufaza is by far the best animated father in animation film history . his death made a huge impact on me as a child and now !
I believe he's the only animated father who is on the poster of the movie and dies !
This movie gets better as I grow up .. It's like Star Wars new hope . just embrace the silliness of it for the greater good !
Cant wait to see his review on the 2019 version. Hopefully it'll be a long awaited "Old vs New" review.
The Lion King (1994)
Box Office: $4.178 billion
The Lion King (2019)
Box Office: $2.411 billion
"his father says nut up" lmao
Why do so many reviewers hate ''Can You Feel The Love Tonight" so much? I mean i respect their opinions but just why?
I actually saw Simba's Pride first. It remains my favourite in the series.
the reason why we don't see the lionesses helping Simba at first, is because the had the camera focus more on Simba's confrontation with Scar.
How came here from the new lion king review
You make a good point with how the lionesses didn’t defend Simba when he backed up into a cliffside, but I always thought they couldn’t really fight back because the hyenas were defended Scar and Simba was way too close to the edge.
