Resolution is a big factor, that's why this past console generation had you choosing between 1080 60fps and 4k 30fps. This kind of games were normally rendered at 360 resolutions, 480p at max, 1080 is a really big jump.

The 40 - 60 you mention is rather generous tbh Contra Network has a frame rate test and wow, there's sections where the game struggles to maintain 20 FPS. Aspyr need to patch this game squat.
Personally I wouldn't want this to remake this game. Remaster? Sure, just making it HD and better/up to date designs is always cool. But if they were to remake it, chances are they may butcher the game. Then again this is a fan favorite, so who knows?

this game is such a blast (yes it does have its rough parts, constantly respawning enemies are a pain in the arse, which means it's not for everyone) but i love it 😊
I got this and I'm loving it. I'm not noticing performance issues. It looks great. There probably was lag at some point, but nothing out of the norm or that I actually noticed. It's not a remaster, so don't expect it to be. It's an old game. But with the high resolution, widescreen and higher frame rate, it looks awesome.
There's a physical version coming out from Limited Run for $30. It'll be interesting to see what they do with it as useally they come out way after and the patches are pre installed.
Idk, I played the original. Playing the switch version now. It's just as fun and challenging. Sprint, and crouch toggle would have been welcome though...
I bought this game out of pure excitement and to relive nostalgia. I've played it for a bit and enjoyed it but I didn't think I'd see framerate stutters in a 2005 port. I should have waited for a patch.
Solid review boys, hats off to the publisher for giving it to us on the switch. To be honest I remember the performance issues being the same on the OG Xbox back in the day.
Picked up the switch port first due to portability and thought it was near unplayable with the wildly varying framerate. Decided to just pick up the PS4 version and it is like night and day. Runs buttery smooth, much higher resolution, textures do not look as lower res, and it seems like there were some effects that are missing on the Switch version that are in the PS4 one. I really hope they can fix this eventually since the Switch version as it is now is a train wreck.
Such a shame, hopefully it gets patched. I swear devs make games on Switch, just to patch them later, to get in some quick cash. Well at least they patch them, but yeah this quite poor considering a game like Monster Hunter Rise has been running absolutely stellar for me in docked and handheld modes.

I want ALL the old games to be ported over to the Switch. I missed a ton of them and I’m sure others did too. The uncapped frame rate here is unfortunate for sure, though. Thanks for the great review!

Hopefully a rogue squadron port is next 🤞🤞🤞 loved playing it on the gamecube but the possibility of on the go and gyro controls just make it sound like an ideal port 🤞🤞🤞
Really wish this company actually took time to improve the textures and maybe give us the texture change like halo anniversary. Seems like this game runs better on the og xbox
I play MK11, Warframe, and Skyrim on Switch. I'm used to having to deal with reduced graphics and for me, I prefer functionality. I also played the Bioshock trilogy which also has no gyro controls (and completed 1 and 2) but as much as I had my eye on this, I'm honestly gonna pass.
Great performance review. For me, there are ports lovingly recreated or remastered because the pub and dev are proud of their game. Then there is companies only releasing to cash grab. I know which one this is. Hope your well Mark. Happy Easter.
Having never played it but had heard way back when that it was awesome, I was looking forward to giving this a go on the Switch. Disappointed they didn't update the graphics at all. The see-sawing frame rate and the lack of motion controls is also a super downer. I mean, when the switch can handle overwatch and Doom, is there really an excuse? I'll stick to Doom Eternal being on sale methinks...

I loved watching my brother play the original, and have been thinking about getting a physical on LRG, but I really do hope they patch it (though I would love an HD remake tbh, Sev's my boy)
The point around 5 minutes where you put the subtitle about that stutter though, I just bought the game this morning and played through that beginning part and had no such stutter at all in handheld mode on a switch lite

If these old games can't get 60fps performance; I'm not interested. The Capcom Arcade Stadium is a disappointment for games that old to have fps dips or stuttering at all.
Finished this game back in the day and I enjoyed it very much. Looking forward to buy this on a sale or until a patch is released to improve performance.
This is my favourite game from my childhood and I’ve been loving replaying it. I’ve had no problems with it at all, it is exactly how I remember it. Nostalgic gamers won’t care as much I feel, the only ones that will really care about the performance are newer gamers used to modern norms. I think too many people are expecting too much from this.
In my opinion it runs better in handheld than docked. I do hope they bring a patch for frame rate. I’ll settle for 30 with absolute no drops but it def needs to be patched a little. I’ve never played the game so I don’t know how to compare it but I’m having a blast playing it

Looks interesting. Considering the dated visuals this one might be nice to pick up for handheld play on my Switch Lite. With the sale this week my catalogue and back catalogue of games which was already bloated is totally overflowing. The Nintendo Switch has the opposite problems of basically every Nintendo console like the n64, gamecube, wii u, etc. I kind of like the dated look. Reminds me of that time period of gaming.
I remember when games was released fully made without patches on day one or pointless bulking add ons ( stares at call of duty modern warfare and cold war and shrugs)

Well it might be nice that if it comes, it comes with a official version of the 1.3 patch mod at least rather that the rushed to the door vanilla version of the game

@@arenaron3602 You thank modders for that as the vanilla game was very unfinished with broken promises (Space battles were badly designed with the interiors barebones, The saber heroes were poorly designed as most are very samey and the fact that the maps are too small that didn't fully represented the planets in some cases (cof cof Kasshykk is so lacking of plant life that made it so appealing in the movies cof cof) and cruisers in the scale, the classes were so unbalanced and the AI was with errors, they promised space to ground and we never get it without mod). the only reason that game was never abandoned is because Battlefront III was cancelled (so we were stuck with it untill EA's Reboot) and because modders went to work and made what the devs never bothered to make and more
Sad to see, I was very excited to get an updated way to play this, as I have such fond memories of playing it on my xbox. Hopefully they'll do some more work on it, as I think the price point for an updated experience is perfect and an immediate purchase for me, if not for the flaws. Why are people so obsessed with FPS. Whatever happened to people just enjoying the game as it is instead of picking holes in it. God if everyone was concerned about that back in the day nearly every game would be slated
I think Paul, it's about getting a pleasant gaming experience. Frame rates are important for how the game plays and also for anyone who gets motion sickness an unlocked frame rate or inconsistent frame times is going to be unpleasant. Basically, has the effort been put in to optimising the port you're paying for? I think that's why people want to know. Regardless, it's a fun time! Mark

As you said a complete remake would have been better. Apart from the occasional classic, games this old should not be ported and if they are then they should not be released with performance issues - how could this be considered acceptable when the hardware is so much more powerful now.
I’ve been watching reviews for this game and am I the only one to experience a weird snapping of the camera to the floor or ceiling followed by being unable to turn the camera left?
Gutted about this one I remember buying the outer worlds when it first came to the switch I was also gutted with that performance. Hopefully a couple of good patches should tidy it up.
It's a shame that the port didn’t turn out amazing, but will keep an eye out for patches and a sale. Would love to replay the good old days! Now I just wish the old Battlefront games would release again!
This game is broken on Switch. The camera goes completely insane randomly and you can no longer turn your character. I'll be turning the stick all the way to the right and the character will be 'locked' in position. Damn shame as I like this game. How have they not patched this?
The low FPS are mainly CPU related because the game only uses one core and it's at full load almost all the time. Overclocking the Switch CPU to its max. speed solved most of the frame rate issues for me. The list of games that go from just bearable to very playable just by overclocking gets longer and longer
@@alpha34098 I can only speak for the first generation of Switch, which I have. It has an unatchable hardware bug that allows the installation of a custom firmware. With that "jailbreak", you can overclock the CPU/GPU (from the low energy saving specs Nintendo uses up to Nvidia's max. specs) and do many other things like there's a number of games that got 60FPS patches (Metro, Bioshock, Bulletstorm). And yes, this can be used for illegal activities, but modding the Switch as I described is fully legal. I can't give you a detailed description on how to do it, especially of you have a newer model of the console. But google is definitely you friend. Keep in mind that Nintendo doesn't like that and apparently often bans people even for legally using homebrew. Since I only play Singleplayer games, I only go online to buy and download games without the hack applied, and then turn off wifi and reboot into the CFW
Is there any way to use the squad orders/commands on Switch? All I could find was hold down the Y button to see them but pressing the actual buttons only switched weapon attachments

With gyro and a performance patch I’m absolutely in. Missed picking it up in 2015, so this is a no brained for me. Love the intuitive squad controls.

Finally someone noticed that the pixel shaders and bump maps do not work on switch. I agree it is unplayable. Plus team commands don't work.

The performance is abysmal as someone who has bought the game and previously played it on pc and xbox one backwards compatibility

Too bad the Switch can't button map for inverted analog controls. I guess they have enough problems with the analog drifting.

Review is way too positive. It's way worse, almost unplayable. Plus has many bugs not mentioned here.

Well it might be nice that if it comes, it comes with a official version of the 1.3 patch mod at least rather that the rushed to the door vanilla version of the game
@@alpha34098 agree because thats the only star wars game i would play for hours and hours without getting bored. hopefully the dev would consider bringing it to switch someday
@@arenaron3602 You thank modders for that as the vanilla game was very unfinished with broken promises (Space battles were badly designed with the interiors barebones, The saber heroes were poorly designed as most are very samey and the fact that the maps are too small that didn't fully represented the planets in some cases (cof cof Kasshykk is so lacking of plant life that made it so appealing in the movies cof cof) and cruisers in the scale, the classes were so unbalanced and the AI was with errors, they promised space to ground and we never get it without mod). the only reason that game was never abandoned is because Battlefront III was cancelled (so we were stuck with it untill EA's Reboot) and because modders went to work and made what the devs never bothered to make and more

Sad to see, I was very excited to get an updated way to play this, as I have such fond memories of playing it on my xbox. Hopefully they'll do some more work on it, as I think the price point for an updated experience is perfect and an immediate purchase for me, if not for the flaws. Why are people so obsessed with FPS. Whatever happened to people just enjoying the game as it is instead of picking holes in it. God if everyone was concerned about that back in the day nearly every game would be slated
I think Paul, it's about getting a pleasant gaming experience. Frame rates are important for how the game plays and also for anyone who gets motion sickness an unlocked frame rate or inconsistent frame times is going to be unpleasant. Basically, has the effort been put in to optimising the port you're paying for? I think that's why people want to know. Regardless, it's a fun time! Mark
The only reason as to how this could run so bad is if the game was actually running on an emulator. It was released on the original Xbox!

As you said a complete remake would have been better. Apart from the occasional classic, games this old should not be ported and if they are then they should not be released with performance issues - how could this be considered acceptable when the hardware is so much more powerful now.
I’ve been watching reviews for this game and am I the only one to experience a weird snapping of the camera to the floor or ceiling followed by being unable to turn the camera left?

Gutted about this one I remember buying the outer worlds when it first came to the switch I was also gutted with that performance. Hopefully a couple of good patches should tidy it up.

It's a shame that the port didn’t turn out amazing, but will keep an eye out for patches and a sale. Would love to replay the good old days! Now I just wish the old Battlefront games would release again!

This game is broken on Switch. The camera goes completely insane randomly and you can no longer turn your character. I'll be turning the stick all the way to the right and the character will be 'locked' in position. Damn shame as I like this game. How have they not patched this?
We need a remake, then a sequel... or just a brand new republic commando game in general

The low FPS are mainly CPU related because the game only uses one core and it's at full load almost all the time. Overclocking the Switch CPU to its max. speed solved most of the frame rate issues for me. The list of games that go from just bearable to very playable just by overclocking gets longer and longer
And how you did that? As officially there's no way to overclock the Tegra X1 on the Switch
@@alpha34098 I can only speak for the first generation of Switch, which I have. It has an unatchable hardware bug that allows the installation of a custom firmware. With that "jailbreak", you can overclock the CPU/GPU (from the low energy saving specs Nintendo uses up to Nvidia's max. specs) and do many other things like there's a number of games that got 60FPS patches (Metro, Bioshock, Bulletstorm). And yes, this can be used for illegal activities, but modding the Switch as I described is fully legal. I can't give you a detailed description on how to do it, especially of you have a newer model of the console. But google is definitely you friend. Keep in mind that Nintendo doesn't like that and apparently often bans people even for legally using homebrew. Since I only play Singleplayer games, I only go online to buy and download games without the hack applied, and then turn off wifi and reboot into the CFW
Is there any way to use the squad orders/commands on Switch? All I could find was hold down the Y button to see them but pressing the actual buttons only switched weapon attachments
