A little tip for stuffing. I used to make handmade dolls. If you buy a roll of quilt batting. I get mine from Walmart. It comes in a roll in a bag. Pull pieces off and shred it with your hands so it resembles regular stuffing. It’s a much sturdier stuffing. You’ll get a firmer feel and it never loses its shape. 👌
The first tip is incredible! I usually don't have any trouble with the rest, but I've always held my breath when trying to close the magic ring--I've accidentally ripped the yarn once or twice because of it ^^' Thank you!
Sometimes it depends on the brand of yarn or even the line of yarn- I LOOOOVE Honey Bunny by Hobbii because it flakes the least for me - Baby Snuggles by Hobbii however is not my fave because it flakes wayyyy to much for me
When i close the magic ring it rips out the tail in my hand 😢 I use Himalaya chenille yarn but even super bulky or normal both flake and rip I don't know maybe I pull them hard
Here in Belgium we have a company called Veritas. They have chenille yarn called dolce, it's amazing it doesn't really flake. Also for attaching parts like limbs to the body it works great and doesn't flake, unravel or get stuck like other yarns. The only down side is they only have it around fall/winter
Thank you and some extra amigurumi tips for other viewers. First of all, thank you for the magic ring tip! I am using Parfait XL, I've used smaller cheniells and so long as I was gentle and kept the stitches really gentle and loose, I was able to carefully tug the loop closed as with regular yarns. However, this super, super fluffy yarn just would not cooperate. I look forward to seeing if this will work. However an alternative I went to was the alternative to a magic loop, which is just two stitches and stitching into the first loop. I use thread or a smaller white yarn to secure the circle completely closed as is typical of amigurumi. I also found sewing on with real thread or smaller yarn to attach pieces has been very effective to keep the yarn in good quality! Thank you so much, best of luck!
i just want to say thanks. i got a particularly brittle skein of plush yarn and i swear i've done over 20 magic circles and they've all broke on me. but thanks to your tips im happily going to be able to finish my project without needing to see a therapist! woo!
I found your video just in time! I was 5 mins from burning my WIP. I can make just about anything with regular acrylic/cotton yarn but the plushie yarn is a new beast! Will definitely recommend your tutorial to my crochet friends❤
Thanku thanku thanku! I a pro with my amagurumis BUT....I just tried to make my 1st plushie and it's definitely a game changer and a whole new way of doing my animals. I made every mistake u went over lol! U made my life easier when I was just about to give up. 😊😊😊
I usually prefer to use a worsted 4 weight yarn when making amigurumi. This was a really interesting and new concept for me. Thank you for sharing alternative ideas and methods. I am excited to try yours.
Excellent video, you explain so well that I think I'm ready to finally starting a plushie project. Thank you for the help. Also, I'm already loving to see where this channel is going
I have found everything you shared in this video. Very helpful. I have been crocheting for quite a few years, but have only now began amigurumi recently. Thanks for your great tips and attitude. I’ll definitely be Watching more of your videos
i am hesitant to crochet with plush yarns but i love the feel n look of the plushi amigurumis .., thanxs for the tips . i am going to start with very small gurumis ,like leggy frog chickens small dinos etc , to get the hang of it .
Super helpful! One thing I started doing when sewing my amigurumi together is using size 10 cotton thread. It disappears really well into the plush yarn and I don't have to worry about it getting caught and breaking. I'm still experimenting!
Love the tips! Very helpful. I would love to see how you sew different types of body parts or things on your amigurumis. I struggle a lot with the sewing part.
@@crochetmezaddy thank you! Like I often don’t really now should I sew it on with the normal stitch? With the front loop or just the back loop? How to position it properly.( pins don’t really work for me) I always just try to randomly sew it on and most of the times it comes out crooked.
Thank-you for the different tips. I’m new to crochet all together and working with plush yarn for the first time. I would love to know though when seeing pieces together if the yarn was to fray/come apart what are you best to do? Or even at any point during a project? I have been very lucky and haven’t had any bits fray too bad on me yet, some have wanted to start but nothing drastic as of yet.
Just started amigurmi, I found with my tensions with Bernat Blanket yarn (rec. Size 11 hook it said) that Size H/5.00mm has been the best for my first two balls of yarn. Made about 9 different sized products, and having alot of fun
This is amazing advice! Especially the magic circle trick. I made my two daughter two amigurumi Sanrio plushies and I struggled so much with getting the chenile yarn to work with the magic circle, it took several attempts every time.
My yarn used to snap all the time, tightening it around my hook at the start makes it so much easierrrr! It also allows me to tighten it later too for some reason 🤷🏻♂️
Thanks for all of the info. I enjoy all of your videos. It's nice to see another guy out there who crochets - and maybe you can help. I am looking for a bulky chenille yarn for amigurumi that has a stripe of some kind of all over pattern with a very short repeat so that it shows up on a small animal. Most stripes don't change color quick enough to get the effect. Thanks
Great video, I have been looking for tips as I’m about to undertake my first plush toy so this was helpful. To stop yarn from fraying do you do anything to the ends such as strip off the material and tie the inner string together, also do you yarn over when crocheting with plush yarn or do the tighter yarn under?
Can you please do a more in detail video on the magic ring and the double magic ring? I have a VERY VERY hard time with the double with the blanket plush yarns. I just found your channel and am loving your content.....thanks.
Thank you for the kind compliment! I’m not entirely sure what a double magic ring is as I’ve never come across it before - could you let me know in more detail about the issue - feel free to DM me on Instagram :)
I was told to use a bamboo hook instead of a metal hook when using the plush yarn. Is that a thing? Also, would you recommend using a strand of worsted weight yarn in a different color so you can see your stitches when using darker colors?
Love this! Cone head useful, I find contrastingly at the end of making a head or sphere when I'm decreasing I get a lot of gaps and it looks very different to the top, any advice? Maybe I'll swap down a hook size 🤔
Hello dearly beloved viewer, and real life sister - Yes, I started off having EXTREMELY tight tension as you might see in a doll I made for your son. I actually use a larger hook in comparison to many other plushie crocheters because my tension is already way tighter so there's not as much of a need for me to drop hook size to avoid gaps.
Any advice on where I can find the appropriate yarns in Brisbane? I’ve been asked by my daughter in law to make some amigurumi turtles for my grandkids.
Hi, I have a question. Some Amigurumi are crocheted with Velvet chenille Yarn. I would like to know if it's possible to substitute Velvet Yarn by a normal yarn ? Must we change the pattern ? Or we can crocheted with the same pattern dimension ?
I've found that doing a ch2 and then put the first 6sc in the 2nd chain works better than trying to cinch up that mc. The yarn tends to get stuck, break or shred. Doing the ch2 eliminated that for me.
Thanks for mentioning this! A lot of people do like this way and are very successful with using it - I tend to always have a small gap or I’m trying to hide the bump of the knot so I decided to not delve into this alternative way too much!
Great tips there. So many "alternatives" to what I'm used to. I avoid these plushy yarn especially the chunky ones because my left arm is so strained just making one amigurumi. Do you experience this or do you hold the plushy yarn differently from other yarn?
I’ve been having this problem where I follow patterns made for regular yarn with puffy yarn instead and the amigurumi heads keep turning out way too big even though I’m not altering the pattern
Thank you for great tips. I’m a newbie to chunky yarn and grumi projects, I’m curious as to how you feel about the crochet yarn under vs over… i didn’t realize the stitches would look differently…still debating which way will be best for plushies…
I personally do yarn over because I already have a tight tension and don’t really mind the different - however many amigurumi artists opt for yarn under as it has a “tidier” stitch across all yarn types.
Do you have any tips for counting stitches? I made my first amigarumi and did a lot of frogging! I used a stitch marker. It’s more to do with not missing going into an increase stitch or otherwise just being able to tell if I’m going into the right part of the stitch? Thanks for your other tips. They are great.
Can you address this question in a video at some point…..I recently made a sock monkey out of cotton yarn. When I went to sew on the ear, I couldn’t decide which direction I should lay the ear before sewing - Inside of the ear down or outside of the ear down. I felt like the stitches showed more on one of the sides so I ended up having to undo one ear. Maybe make a video showing methods on how to attach appendages. Thanks so much. I hope your subs increase because your videos are very helpful
Helpful tips, for sure. 😊 Zack, how well does the yarn-under technique, to close up the gaps, work with plush yarn? Is it much more difficult to see the separate stitches? I've only made one item with plushie yarn--a baby seal hat, and it was white and black--and although it came out beautiful, with no gaps, it was SO hard to see the stitches, so it took away the 'fun' of the crocheting process so much that I never wanted to use plush yarn again.

Each of my stitches are long. Where yours seem to be square. I struggle and pull and try to keep tension. I fight with it. When I’m pulling thru the last part of the stitch, my hook catches. I don’t know if it’s the angle or what, but I wish you could make a slow motion video of how the heck you get such perfect stitches. I don’t know if I’m holding the work wrong or tilting the hook wrong. 😩

That magic circle was hard.

How do you sew in your ends?
PRO TIP: Use a lighter 🔥 at the ends when you cut your plush yarn to help it say intact!
I wish I had seen your video a few weeks back, I made a huge plushie of Rimuru Tempest (anime character), and he has a big cone on him, I just flipped him upside down and its underneath now lmao. Thank you for the video though, Ill know for next time! - a fellow Kiwi
My first plush yarn use was on Adeles cockatoo pattern...so much white yarn 🤭 😅 oh naur.
and look at where you are now!
maybe a dumb question but i cut my plush yarn and now its crumbling apart. do i just make a knot?
When i close the magic ring it rips out the tail in my hand 😢
I use Himalaya chenille
When i crochet my rows twist so its uneven when i crochet no sew patterns :/ What kann i do to make it more Straight?
A common issue with this is that you might be crocheting yarn over, look into the difference between crocheting yarn over versus yarn under! If you change to yarn under, the natural “twist” that comes with amigurumi should be less obvious
Ive never seen magic ring done like that ! So different
I kinda use a different type of plush yarn
I didnt realize blanket yarn was also considered plushie yarn but then again I've not had any luck with amigurumi so I wouldn't know which yarns are best to use for them 😅
i tried this type of yarn today for the first time and man it was impossible to see the stitches.
Yes! I love the look of fluffy amigurumi, but chenille and blanket yarns are crazy difficult to see stitches! 😭
Some people use a cigarette lighter to melt the ends. Is that something you also do?
I do that if the ends need to be shown but that’s almost hardly ever with this yarn :) if I was to make something like hair, I would use a different yarn type, like wool
Kiwi 🥝 accent. So rare on You Tube, from another Kiwi crochet connoisseur!
Hahaha Kia ora! Kiwi and proud 😎
The thing that bothers me about this yarn is that it's fragile, it tears, and it gets thinner as you work with out. How to keep this from happening?
