All these violin videos by so many different people, but if you're looking for like tutorials or history or instruction on like country/bluegrass/old time fiddle, there doesn't actually look to be much on youtube that's available.
Fantastic Austin - all the meat and potatoes needed to take my fiddle playing across the gap from Irish tunes to bluegrass/country! A great big “THANKS!” 😊
I've been playing Irish fiddle for 20 years and recently branching out into country and bluegrass... Thought this would be easy but got to 11:30 and the Nashville shuffle on a pentatonic scale just absolutely broke me 😂 😂 😂 Brilliant video, thanks so much!!
That's so kind thank you! Yes I am ever grateful to have received a call from Chris when he proposed this idea. I share this video with many of my students and it seems to be getting good attention with his viewers as well!
Thank you so much !!! Violin beginner here . I found an very old guy violinist from Mexico , he plays his music with double strings . Just like the fiddle , country bluegrass , I really like the double string style on the violin it sound beautiful 😍
Sheesh. This made me search Fb market place and now im picking up a violin tomorrow lol. Always loved the fiddle in classic country and as a guitarist, challenge accepted!
This made me take a break from my banjo practice. My fiddle is next-door and it’s raining outside so I will have to take a rain check and catch you tomorrow
I love the Bill Monroe poster on your wall! Bill’s bluegrass boys worked the farm for him when they weren’t on the road playing music. Even as an older man Bill was as strong as a mule! Then again most farm boys are! Loved the lesson! I think I’m gonna pull out the fiddle and rosin up the bow and give it a whirl after that! Thank you for the video!

This one of the best I have watched in BG/country fiddling. I was so lucky to find this channel. your teaching is very methodical. i am a self leaner. and i enjoyed the best and it is a matter of practicing. you have made this so simple. looking forward for more of these vids. I also learnt lot from Christian. Thanks for your generosity.
Love this!! So glad you liked this one. I love teaching this stuff and it's like a dream come true to hear from people like you who are getting a lot from it.

This is a great lesson! Thank you and Chris for presenting it. I'm a huge fan of Christian Howes and have used your videos to work on shuffle bowing. This lesson really brings things together! I think there is a cajun/zydeco thing going on here, too.
I was just reading how the Nashville shuffle goes back to the style fiddle players used in England in the 17th century (as well as syncopation and mimicking the fox hounds etc being shown off playing ‘The fox chase’)and how that was an echo from Medieval times and that brought me to your fabulous video😅
Love it!!! Thank you so much! If you liked this one- you will likely enjoy this one on pentatonic scales as well: th-cam.com/video/5uZu_FO2kHM/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=AustinScelzo
A Great simplistic breakdown of rythym and technique. : Im a Guitar player , and like many out there ,i fancied my chances on the Violin, ...fretting notes is one thing , bowing notes is another. I'm not to out to be Stéphane Groppelli..i don't have enough life(or talent) left..but i feel this is an achievable goal.
This was the thing that was missing from my fiddling. I came up as a jazz guy, and I was doing swing feel and it seemed close enough, but these shuffles are actually the thing.

Hey! Loved the video. I’m really wanting to learn the fiddle and play this style of music. What model do you recommend? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Great screen for learning country violin. I see that you have the appropriate dies and a player that you start with your foot. I am interested in how it works and where it can be obtained. Delimar from Croatia

At about 7:19 on the video you start adding notes to the shuffles using the pentatonic scales. I know the notes in the scales but have a hard time following exactly the sequence you are playing. I’m not advanced enough to improvise on the scales so can you share the exact order of the notes you play between 7:19 and 7:40 on the video? If so, I could play along and learn. That would be so helpful and I’m sure for others trying to apply shuffles in this way. ❤
Austin, thanks so much for this great instructional video! Around the 7 minute mark you expand the shuffles to start adding notes. It’s tough for us beginning shufflers to figure out the pattern of the notes. Any chance for you to provide the note names or finger positions to make integrating these patterns easier? Even when I slow the video right down I still struggle to figure out the note progression. Thank you for any guidance you can provide.❤
On the d/A chord, the notes are D E F# A B A F# E A. (These are the middle two strings). On the D/G chord (the bottom two strings) the notes are G A B D E D B D G; on the A/E chord the notes are A B C# E F# E C# B A
There is a paucity of instruction for backup on fiddle. This is a Godsend. Thank you. Can you develop this further? These approaches work great on open strings, but how do you incorporate notes and double stops on fingered chords? I really need help with this stuff!
Thanks! I've got a video on my channel called essential bluegrass double stops that cover all the possible fingered double stops in all the bluegrass keys. This combines really well with this lesson on bowing. Let me know what you think. If you are a reader I also have them written out. Email me for that one Austin@AustinScelzo.com
After watching your video I immediately ordered my new fiddle. You are a great teacher and looking forward to learning to play the fiddle. What is the device that you are using for the background as you are playing?

Yes! Many of these bowings are also used in cajun and zydeco fiddling
Great lesson. Saves years .
Also, it wasn't until I stopped trying to play along that I heard the " ba daga ducka dega ducka dum"s in the gaps, which are honestly so cute 😂
