yeah I made something similar mixing the furry gang masks from nuka world and tuxedos, with a mk2 leather armor, and they are all equiped with fully automatic assult rifles that I myself upgrade and produce, and I also like having like 1 elite soldier on all my settlements, he is always equiped with power armor and a minigun, basically my settlements are impenetrable.

Attackers need to funnel into small areas that can be loaded with turrets/proximity traps to turn them into kill zones.

    • @FuriousMaximum
      @FuriousMaximum 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I definitely like it from an RP standpoint. My version has it staffed by ex-Raiders, ex-Gunners, ex-Diamond City guards, and a few civilians like Matthew kept around as a doctor, or a few others to tend crops (Kaylee and Layla I think) but, it took me a few tries, and I don't like Hangman's Alley because:
      - Has constant Mutant vs DCity Guards 2 blocks south.
      - Enemies that spawn and get stuck in the tunnel 1 block south.
      - For me, when the settlement is attacked the enemies spawn perfectly IN the central plaza!
      - Rust Devils everyday 2 blocks east.
      - Frequently crashes when I walk up from Vault 81 or whatever
      - Frequently crashes during loading when I fast travel there.
      - Frequently crashes just milling about there.
      - Oh, and if you save at or near Hangman's Alley, kiss that file goodbye because it will refuse to even load from the main menu.

I kind of just like Hangman's Alley because I managed to actually make an intricate layout in that really limited space and I feel like a boss for it. Got gardening on scaffolds, crisscrossing ladders, balconies over the entrances... I specifically like the fire escapes and having an easy way to get on the roofs. You honestly don't need that much room to have high resources; It's beds and shops that take up space more than anything.
Least favorite thing is the height limit.
Oh, and I leave the doors locked.

One weird problem with Spectacle Island is the supply lines. Because of how the provisioners work, and the fact that its an island, your provisioners will actually walk along the sea bed to reach the mainland. Oddly, they won't drown from doing this, but they can (and often will) die from the radiation they'll take while under the water, meaning you have to assign a ghoul or robot to do run the supply lines

Starlight makes for a great village Settlement. You can get 40-80 water from the 'puddle' via Water Purifiers and the nice flat areas allow you to slap down shops and shacks as you see fit. I'll usually place some Barn presets together too for a sort of sleeping hall. Materials are easy to get for the reason you mentioned, as Trudy and [sometimes] Carla are at the Diner across the way. If you're lucky Gene or the Brahmin lady will spawn at the campfire north the Settlement, allowing you to get extra resources that way.

My favourite is Hangman's Alley for sure. Capping out the Settlers and sending them all (except necessary ones) to various other settlements creates way more activity in the Boston area, almost like an upgraded Bunker Hill half-way settlement for traders and travellers alike.
Only problem is that building can be finnicky given the really low vertical building limit and small building area.

Taffington Boathouse is my personal favorite settlement, because you can set up a bunch of water purifiers up in rows, and create a water purification plant, and a player home for myself. I think it's great because if you access the settlement workshop, you can take the purified water from the purification plant and either sell it for tons of caps, or use it as a reliable source of healing.

Sanctuary Hills is still my number 1 spot. It is the best looking settlement location in the game. It has the best scenery of anywhere else in the game. It has the best looking river, surrounded by great looking and close proximity mountains that have fog build up on them. The small creek in the back is also an excellent feature. It overlooks a small town and has a second settlement location in very close proximity (Red Rocket). The streets and sidewalks really help to create a well organized environment that looks lived in. The flat foundations are perfect for designing any type of structure that you want. The access bridge to enter the town is extremely cool as well. I have the entire place walled off (it looks really realistic) without ruining the natural look or surrounding environment.
After you literally spend well over a hundred hours just designing it, you feel like its an actual living, breathing place, especially with all of the unique inhabitants that you can put in it.
There isn't any other settlement location in the game that has all of that going for it. My second choice is either Spectacle island (I have my airship settlement there, no I don't use mods, I literally built it myself from scratch) or The Castle (it has a lot going for it as well).
Abernathy Farm can build up really high, but its a really dingy looking place and only has large power poles to look at. It's terrible in the sense that you are really exposed for attacks, with no natural barriers and a considerable amount of brush surrounding it.

Pro-tip on Grey Garden, you can build up on the Highway overpass. It's a PITA to get up there (I use a 4 story Elevator sitting on Foundations) and it glitches a bunch when building up there but it's a cool little extra place that I doubt any NPC's are capable of attacking.

    • @robertgagne8892
      @robertgagne8892 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Grey Garden is most always my "home base", and I usually use the bus on the lower level of the overpass as my private "domain". I also make it the central "hub" for all of my supply lines (or as many as the game will allow!), and I use Automatron bots as the "caravaneers" for these supply lines...
A small problem with using those bots is that, on occasion, due to a known bug, those highly specialized "tank bots" I build for that purpose are reset back to stupid "protectron"- type bots with all default settings, which then need to be revamped back to the desired state once this has happened. I think it's a small price to pay for the greater convenience and power of bot caravaneers, that are much more capable than ANY human version would be!!! Autolasers on both right and left arms, and the strongest possible armor are especially powerful for this purpose, and these bots put up a great fight against practically ANY enemies.
As an aside, I would also mention that (I think) some don't realize the full "scope" of the Hangman's Alley settlement, which includes the TUNNEL and CANAL, as well as a portion of the "walkway" along the Charles river! I, for the longest time, didn't realize that these were in fact "buildable" areas in the settlement, extending the area quite a bit, and I was at first only utilizing the area between the front and back access doorways for building! One day I realized my error, and since then I place turrets in the canal area, as well as in the area along the Charles river "walkway", as well!!! This makes defending the settlement much easier...

Most of we Survivalists use Hangman's Alley from as early on in the game as possible. It's close to Diamond City, as close to downtown as possible, and it is VERY close to CIT/Institute so you can use the Relay to fast travel and not waste as much time using Vertibirds to travel elsewhere. You can easily build vertically in the Alley using the roof of the premade building in the corner you can place a floor tile and build a second floor then either use an elevator or staircase to go up a floor. You can go a few feet from the top of the buildings surrounding the Alley so there is ALOT more space than most realize. It is the single most important settlement in Survival. If you use this Settlement DO NOT unchain the door atop The stairs or Unlock the red door. This will keep enemies from being able to enter forcing them to come in through the main entrance.
    My Alley:
First floor- Premade unscrappable shacks, crafting benches, small farm.
Second Floor- Beds, Living quarters, recreation area.
Third Floor- Happiness room (Weight room, TV room, Scavanging station), marketplace.
Fourth Floor- Happiness. Lots and lots of happiness. Weight benches, Slot machine, Trilby horse, barber, surgery center from Vault Tec and lots of Lv4 bars from base game.

Playing on Survival Mode has given me a new appreciation for Oberland Station, and it was a shame not to see it get mentioned. It's easy to reach early in the game from Sanctuary without having to go through a lot of hostile areas, and it also has a mostly-unobstructed route east to reach Diamond City, making it a fantastic "waypoint" for traveling between Sanctuary and Diamond City without having to go through Lexington or College Square. On top of that, one of its two potential "unlock quests" is probably the best settlement unlock quest in the game for ease and reward, since it only requires you to clear Sunshine Tidings Co-Op of a handful of feral ghouls, and as a reward you get access to Oberland Farms *and* Sunshine Tidings *and* you get two automatic settlers at Sunshine Tidings.
While its build area is obnoxiously sloped and tiny in the vanilla game, and you probably aren't building a lot of high-population, aesthetically-pleasing cities here, for sheer Survival utility I've come to love and respect Oberland Station.

And Finch Farm is fun to put a few rocket turrets at the very edge of the overpass closest to the junkyard. You have a clear line of sight to a few gunners that spawn there. They are within range and will get agroed if they get slash damage! I had a series of turrets up there and loved to watch them make their way over to the farm. They never made it past the tractor!

They walk from the East and find, I think it's a chair, and just sit up there. So, if you put stairs leading up there, they can at least walk down whenever they feel like it. i personally have 3 locations i absolutely love and my opinion of it is more driven to what u can scrap there and the pre made structures and things in the area that can prove useful.
1st of all i would say the red rocket for the reason that like stated in the video, dealing with the npc's there constantly hitting the walls and the annoyance of the characters as well tends, its one of the only places that has some form of fully automated systems without any mods to help out. what i mean by this is the button to the garage door which is useful and a neat touch as well as the doors you can also get at the red rocket which are unique. the downfall isnt that bad in terms of water as u can just make water pumps but i can see how it gets really tedious. also to me its basically the perfect square and has pre made exits and entrances which is gr8 for roleplay saves and also advanced builders.
2nd i would put the starlight drive in. i personally think starlight drive in is probally one of the best locations to build at. its moreless flat land, its water source is useful, pre made buildings could prove useful to more advanced builders yet again using the surroundings, not that difficult to obtain and alot more. it has alot of scrap which is useful for basic buildings and building those wooden shacks, theres always a random encounter nearby in fact around 3 from what i remember which can keep you around for something to do and my personal favourite are when the game gives you a pre made entrance or a gate you can take advantage of in the build.
3rd and last i would say the raider workshop past the train track and near the top of the map east of sanctuary. although at very low levels its an extremely tough fight, its possible to easily pick off each raider while also using the broken motorway to your advantage like i used to. once you killed the raiders which is best done silently, it is possible to get free power armour to obtain there as well as a fatman. (going directly east from sanctuary also has a fatman not far away anyway so if you get it you get 2 of them with at least 2 shots) the raider workshop is quite small but offers alot of high tier gear and even a magazine on the workshop its self. it comes with a free sitting area and a small elevated sleeping quarters while also being boxed in like a cage feeling like a small community. outside it has a defense post which can be used for npc's to guard and easy access to shooting downhill at other raiders there. lastly if you manage to set it up right, it is quite a useful place where spotlights actually become rather useful, turrets have good vantage and defending points and you also have just enough room to build something small or use it as a sustained farm.

I built a nice settlement in Finch Farm on the highway. I liked the build and thought it was so unique being up on the highway. My biggest problem was that my settlers would fall through the bridge for no reason all the time. lol I even went as far as covering the holes but they still fell. It was a few years ago so maybe it's fixed. Who knows. Love the video!

Agreed, i have selected the same settlements with Spectacle Island as my main one. Sanctuary Hills is amongst my least favorite i guess, simply because there is a lot of stuff in the way. I never thought i would get into building when i started playing this game and it ended up being my favorite thing to do, while adding a little bit of a tower defense game. The only other place i loved to built at not being mentioned was the lighthouse, simply because of the romantic view it naturally has. Keep it up and have fun!

Hangmans alley alows for some cool construction if your good at cheeting into place the starter pieces. You can make it look like everything you built belongs there and is built onto the alley. Hiding the rough edges and making what you build completely unique to anything you might build in any other building location. Pluss if done right there can be room for a compleat settlement. A good place to store NPCs. As they have no place to hide there when you want them.

I personally separate the settlements into supply line depots, farms, and home locations. This helps keep the population numbers in major settlements doing things inside the area and utilizes settlements with bad building capacities or terrain.
*Supply Line Depots* : Some examples include Red Rocket Truckstop, Hangman's Alley, and Mechanist's Lair. By having a supply line start in these areas, it frees up the population in other settlements like farms and homes.
*Farms* : They are exactly what you think they are. Examples include Greygarden, Greentop Nursery, and Sunshine Tidings Co-op. These settlements are there to generate sellable produce and feed the commonwealth. Additionally, attacks on the settlement should have some natural walls preventing damage to the crops supplemented by player made walls to box them in.
*Homes* : Some examples include Sanctuary, Outpost Zimonja, Starlight Drive-in, and The Slog. These places have large build limits or interesting structures. The slog is an example of a settlement that is constantly under attack, and would benefit from being properly built.

Kingsport lighthouse maybe isolated, but it's located on an escalated plot of land that is shielded by unclimable stone. The very convienient house and back house is also very spaceous. Although, a children of atom endgame location that is hostile is lookated at basically point-blank range, while there is a few scrap able recourses, but still a really good settlement spot. Dammit you could even build at the top of the lighthouse which makes good storage space and give you (if you had a sniper playthrough) a really good bird's eye view of the area.

I love how everyone builds these huge bases with "no mods". Building is absolutely the best part of the game for me but really y'all, the build limit is so low in all settlements. You're not building these huge buildings without mods. Nowhere can you support 20+ settlers and your huge buildings without going over the build limit. I do use mods and have trouble with game crashing because Microsoft took so many shortcuts on Xbox but let's just see a fully operational matured settlement with your 80 power armor frames and no mods. Your build limit in sanctuary was almost maxed with your one building there. Hope if FO5 ever happens they manage to keep workshop mode AND make realistic build limits.

@@Kuzify yes of course, but I mention the glitch because big settlements can be done with this glitch and no mods. • @awesomechainsaw

As someone who used to be on xbox as well. I found that the xbox one settlements can handle about 4 times what their actual build limit is.
I haven’t tried to push it on my PC usually remaining within that limit as well. Though it also probably depends on your pc build.
Finally Red rocket and sanctuary should be considered as a single building area given that both are loaded at the same time. Honestly given how close they are, and bethesda didn’t have to worry about consoles. Then they should have just made both one really massive settlement. How cool would that be?

Just recently began playing this game - starting without watching any videos. Starlight Drive-in was the 3rd settlement I acquired (after Sanctuary and Red Rocket). The only issue I had/have with Starlight was for some reason the population maxed out way too early in the game (maybe by level 10 or earlier), thus couldn't afford to build shops, and couldn't build robots - so I used Starlight as my "Logistics Center", and except for a few farmers, made the entire population "provisioners" - running supply lines to every settlement.

I inevitably set up Sanctuary Hills as my main base for several reasons. One is the initial settlers I can get from those "annoying" NPCs (which I do not find annoying). I like the abundant raw materials and vast available building space which is also more than enough to plant vast numbers of crops. But primarily what I love is the fact I can easy put down a couple dozen large water purifiers which in short order makes me insanely rich, able to barter for all the raw materials or other goods I could ever want.
