    Sorry to hear about some of the issues you've had. This is very unusual and we've reached out to you so we can have a look at this further.

    Good review, I have the Falken Wildpeak A/T 3 on a 200 and have no had any issues. I left muddies behind for all the reasons you mentioned as I find all muddies get the same problems. Usually we 4x4 owners never buy the same brand twice but at least go and look at the Falken Wildpeak A/T 3s they are really good and have had them for a year with plenty of caravan towing and they have no obvious wear yet. Thanks

    I have Falken Wildpeak A/T AT3W 225 X 16 X 75 tyres on my 2006 Hilux and they're an aggressive all terrain crossover type tyre and I've never had any issue with them. At $195 per tyre I believe they're good value for money and they're very quiet on the road. I run an electrical contracting business in Townsville and I've never had any issues with them, but they've only done 15000km.

    Thanks Alex. Great video, as always. This has really got me thinking. I put a set of Cooper Discoverer ST Max ATs on my Patrol about 30,000 miles ago and in the past couple of months have had some worrying droning noise below 20mph. I have no steering wobble and believe the issue to be at the back. My local garage checked the Patrol over and said it was tyre noise. Well, I didn't believe them as the tyres have been great up until now and have loads of tread/life in them. I may go and get the balancing checked now. I hope you guys are doing OK over there. I am in England and we have been following your awful bush fires on the news. So sad. Stay safe everyone!

    So here I am in March 2022 culling down my shortlist of potential A/T-MT tyres before I replace my worn out current tyres. No doubt over the last 4 years there has been improvements to all tyres and my current choice may no longer be at the top. Sorting through the internet "reviews" on tyres is an exercise in sorting the paid product placements pretending to be honest reviews and the actual genuine reviews and, it's not getting any easier. This review seems genuine and, as a result, the Falkens have lost their place on my shortlist. . Anyway, the current tyres have served me very well and I'll buy that brand again, but probably in their hybrid version between A/t and M/T as I'm doing more road than dirt these days. I would have liked to have seen a follow up comment from Falken after they reached out to the reviewer but that didn't happen so...

    Get the Toyo RT's in a 33. Got them on my GU and they're fantastic. Done 20,000plus in everything.. sand, mud, dirt, shale, snow, rain, highway etc.. Handles absolutely perfectly and very quiet.

    Great honest review and not the normal cash for comment type.
    On my second set of Mickey Thompson tyres on my 150 Prado, first were MTZ's (83k) and now ATP3's (now at 30k). Expensive yes but can only say good things about both them and would buy both again. Have used all sorts on other brands on 4wd's over the years and never had the balance issues but have heard of it plenty of times.

    Have a look at the Falken Wildpeak AT3W. I'm running them on my patrol in 305/70/r16 and they have been performing very well. One of the reasons I looked into them in the first place was they were a good $50 cheaper per tire than other brands, and I had heard good reviews about them. They are quite an aggressive AT tire, have had no balancing issues, and done 35k on them and still plenty of life left. I'd say definitely a worth contender if you are in the market for an AT tire. Cheers

    Hi Alex, I run the Falken AT3W 265/75r16 on my GU2 wagon. I have done close to 80K on them and still have about 1/2 tred left. I live on a farm in SA, so I do a lot of dirt and rough driving, and I have had them through Bendleby and a few other parks too. Never had any issues with cracking or balance on them... I have run coopers, toyo, bfg and a few others on my car and all but killed them within 30K. The only other ones I've had any luck with are the Hercules TerraTrak, but they are a heavy 10ply tyre, so they chew a but more fuel.

    I’m Always big At running right pressures on and off road. Tried to get a bfg rep to inspect but tyre shop would only say it’s a pressure issue. After doing some reader how it’s common on harder compound Tyers and bfg

    Hey Alex my father was talking to me about looking at the Continental Conti Cross Contact AT's at a reasonable price of around $280 fitted per tyre, which is around the price you paid for the falkens. I was a little sceptical since I couldn't find any decent reviews on youtube. If you're up for suggestions, I'd be interested to see a review on these tyres. Everyone has done reviews on Toyo's or Federals, or Khumo's, but not much around on the Continentals. Anyways, keep up the good work bloke!

My car never sees mud however more than it's fair share of soft sand and as long as pressures down to 16 haven't been stuck yet!!! Great price too compared to mickeys bfg coppers etc etc

    I have the same problem with balancing on my Mickey Thompson ATZ's. Awesome tyre, no punctures and no chipping and have been great in all situations (I've got 66,000kms on mine now and have about another 15-20k left on them), but require balancing every 5000kms. Find yourself a decent tyre shop who will pop the bead and rotate the tyre on the rim rather than just jamming a heap of weights on it when balancing.

    Saving for my next set as we speek ,would be great to see you put sum Mickey T's to the test mate .

  • @johnchism9625
    @johnchism9625 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Alex the tires are probably "out of round" that usually requires shaving them back to round to balance. Many things can cause this like hard braking skidding making a flat spot, broken inner cords from sharp blows with aired down tires on sharp rocks, etc. These are hard to see and takes a ballancer that has a way to gauge the treads as it turns. Shaving the high spots just enough to true the tires before ballancing usually works.

  • @ppalla

    Looking forward to seeing what you go with Alex and subsequent long term review, there is a 4 for 3 deal on till the end of January for the Falken wildpeak at3w. As you are paying full retail with your own hard earned worth taking a punt. Others seem to rate them.
    I run two sets of tyres 18in HTs that came with the Jeep & have 265/70R17 Cooper AT3s as my touring dirt beach tyre. Pretty happy with them but are up there in price & no 4 for 3 deal. Coopers have a $200 off selected sizes atm. They went well at d'entrecasteaux national park Calcup Hill, Yeagerup dunes etc.

    Greetings from Finland. I used to have BFG AT:s on my Hummer H3, but when they wore out, I tried to get Falken AT:s but they were not readily available in the needed size. So I bought these MT:s.
    Here in winter MT:s are almost useless, worse than street pattern summer tyres, but careful driving helps. They are also not legal in the winter because of that as they do not have that M+S "mountain". But I will not care about that too much. They look "winterish" enough for the cops.
    The worn out BFG:s were much, much better winter tyres, but on cold wet tarmac Falken MT:s have much better grip. But, as mentioned, the steering feel is astronomically worse than the BFG AT:s. In the winter, on snow and ice, while the grip is worse than the AT:s, the appalling steering feel is actually dangerous. There is no way knowing if the wet tarmac turns into wet black ice. The steering feel is like a video game or a hovercraft. No feedback. At all. We have spiked tyres here, so during the winter they wear about 2 cm deep 50 cm wide grooves to the lanes. They can be felt, and they can sure be felt with these. To the point that they try to spin the car when black ice is present too when changing lanes. To a novice, these tyres are deadly in the winter. But yes, they are just as silent ast BFG AT:s. And feel softer and the ride is better. I sort of like them, and I need the traction they offer off road. I also have a -79 Blazer K5 because Finland...
    The balancing issue: They "set" more than usual when parked hot. And the "set" tries to stay sometimes even though the tyres warm up. I have only used them for about 5000 km:s, and no need to balance yet, but this is cold Finland, and perhaps the "set" is not that bad as in the hot Australia. It should be less because you are upside down,though, but anyway... :D

    Nor sure if you've chosen yet but I have the Sailun Terramax All Terrains in 265/75x16 on my Navara $200 a tyre. Haven't had them long or been anywhere off road yet but they seem good so far.
    Wondering what others that have them think.

    thanks for the honest review mate, I have the Falken AT3W bought 5 new to take our fj cruiser up a tyre size (33's in rotation) and to replace road tyres & head into the tassie winter snow trips as they're a snow & ice rated tyre, bit of a disappointing end with the chipping & balance problems, not too keen to be buying into that to be honest, as i was thinking of upgrading to these for a MT, if your considering a at tyre mate, you might want to look at the Nitto ridge grappler at, hearing very good things about these.

    What!! You paid retail? From some TV show I think :) .That was a great review, straight, facts only and well presented Alex - thanks mate, greatly appreciated. It's good when as a viewer I don't have to try to separate sales talk from actuality. That balance problem; WTF??!! Perhaps someone with intimate knowledge of tyres can pipe up and give us a clue? I will be going for A/T too. I figure that although the difference between M/T and A/T in mud is significant, most of my driving is A/T material so track boards and winch will need to earn their keep. You'll have to explain the horrible sun-burn the vehicle has suffered.

    you should be able to get the new Toyo hybrid R/T 'rugged terrain' which are supposedly in between a MT and AT, might be worth considering. I'd give them a go myself but they don't appear to be readily available in Aus on 15"rims. 16" and up have no issues.

      @@ppalla yeah so had I. I've been 4x4ing for over a decade and had pretty much every big tyre brand. My Toyos have given me the most dramas by a LONG shot. They've done about, 20,000kms so far and are wearing okay. But I've had serious bead issues. Leaks or popped beads pretty much every time I go offroad it's driving me mad. I've spoken to Toyo and they've acknowledged that my weight and rims are perfectly suited to the tyre and suggested that the issue is my pressures. They suggested not dropping tyres any lower than 30psi off-road 😂
      So far two tyres had to be replaced from blowouts (one tore a side wall on a rock and the other blew out on the great central). And a third one will need replacing soon - it's holding air but has one split in the side wall and another chunk missing from the bead.

    I have the Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLT. They have great grip and tyre wear with side biters so they are more aggressive than the older AT2 or AT3.
    I do have 6 of them so rotate them around regularly but they have done between them so far 80,000Kms.
    I have the 285/75R16 fitted to my steelies on the Landcruiser IFS 100 series balancing them hasn't been an issue between rotations.

    Have had Federal Couragia MT's on my Ranger with similar km's just getting a little noisy now. Very aggressive tread but for $$$ mid 200'S. Awesome in mud plenty of VIC high country action. Maybe video jacking up Ronny's truck pinching his tyres and leaving it on bricks for him. His getting a RAM soon anyway isn't he? 😉😉😉

    • @Sethjxl
      @Sethjxl 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +1 for the Federal. Had them on my last 4x4 and loved them. They are about the same noise as Cooper, BFG and Nitto muddies (i've had them all on the same vehicle for 50000+ km), however i the traction on the Federals was by far the best. They do wear faster but that is the price you pay for a stickier compound. I don't want a wheel that lasts for 80000 km on the black top, that means its not gripping. I still remember going from BFG to Federals, it was like a new truck, stopped 3.3T like it was nothing.

  • @dantheman5222
    @dantheman5222 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The balance you say, its because they were badly fitted from new, when you buy a new set of tyres you will notice a small circle on the sidewall of the tyre that's the balance point, what tyre distributors do is just bang them on the rim so you will always have to get them balanced every 5 to 10 thousand kms and will never ever balance up hence they have to keep adding more and more balance weights(it's a con to keep you coming into the tyre shop every 10ks),
    on the subject of Nissan patrols i had a brand new 07 if tyers are incorrectly balanced they suffer badly at the 80k mark just like every other car or 4x4 its due to the balancing machine has a 80k cut off they don't spin up past 80k its not a patrol thing

    That's a bummer. Always had the Falkens as a good backup brand. But that chipping is crazy. I have 15K on a set of Cooper ST MAXX and I think there is one chip and one chunk on all four tires combined after pretty hard use. I nuked an older set of KO2s in one trip to to Utah in the states The Coopers have done that same trip plus another 1000 miles in lo range and still look great.

    Nothing to do with tyres but looking at the front of the Patrol at the end I am wondering if you have any overheating issues with the bar work and huge spots cutting back the air flow? It certainly looks like the air flow would be pretty restricted.

      one thing is for certain tyres of today are better than we had 20 years ago

  • @mat7883
    @mat7883 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    These tyres are snow rated I believe....this could be causing the chipping being a softer compound.

    My set of MT01 are chewed up badly. Plenty of missing lugs requiring balancing after a big trip. 285 70 17 and have never had any punctures after 30000kms and doesn't even look like they've done more than 10,000kms.. they do require alot less pressure to get flex on sidewalls compared to my previous set. Perhaps Falken could release a compound which is less brittle. Thanks for your review as I thought my set was NQR with all the chunking issues.

    You mentioned balancing issues.... however, in your video I don't see any wheel weights on the outside of your wheels. Would it make any difference if you did this?

    • @Alex.G
      @Alex.G  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because they needed SO much weight, they had to use sticky weights inside the rim. If they had uses the usual type, they wouldn't even fit all the way around the rim.

    My mate has them on his Navara, soft rubber but they're wearing really fast. Even in the 1st 15k km they're half stuffed. Won't be putting them on my truck

    • @Alex.G
      @Alex.G  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow very different to mine! Actually, tyre tread does compress quite quickly in its early life with aggressive tread patterns, he might find the wear slows down a lot from here. Still...then there's all the problems I've had to think about....

    • @Alex.G
      @Alex.G  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've heard of them! But what concerns me is that movement of the tread on the tyre. I wonder if some of the deeper chips and cuts let water get in there and delaminated it somewhat...

    Road forced balanced. You can't spin balance a large tire. Especially a mud tire. All of them do what you're complaining about unless you road force balance them. You put the tire at the best spot in the rim to begin with.
