I don't hear any accent, but then again. I'm Minnesotan.
Anthem4theunderdog me too
Anthem4theunderdog same
Exactly lol
Anthem4theunderdog she’s prolly from the cities. I’ve noticed people who live in the cities or close suburbs ... the accent is not as strong but there is things we say that give it away lol
Me too
Those Minnesotan goodbyes omg. My husband will stand in the doorway with his relatives for an hour when we're trying to leave. Drives me insane! Argh!
Hahah they're seriously ridiculous. And terrible when you're at a strange relative's/friend's/acquaintance's house and just want to get the heck out of there.
I'm from North carolina
It was terrible as a kid because youd be sent to the car without the keys because they didnt want to waste gas and itll be "just a minute" and then you're dying in the car of heat stroke because your parents are still saying goodbye for 20+ mins
I’m from MN
My family out in California does this, too! Stand inside, say bye for 30minutes. Go outside, say bye for another 30 minutes...
I'm not usually a fan of Northern us accents because of the slight nasality, but Minnesota accents are adorable, they almost have a musical rhythm like Scandinavians speaking English.
Well... they are mostly Scandinavians 😂
That's literally what the accent is.
r/whoooosh
Michiganders are the nasally ones. Minnesotans and Wisconsinites are the cute-voiced ones.
-a Wisconsinite
Amanda P it’s actually said to possibly be German with the sentence structure and Irish/Norwegian with the O’s and other sorts of it
There are a lot of Scandinavians in MN, but last I checked there are actually more Germans. That said, in my experience one has to travel west towards Jamestown, ND, to really start getting a feel for German heritage in food and culture. Although I'm not disagreeing with El as I'm sure there has been influence from many heritages to make the MN accent, I will say, having studied both Norwegian and German languages a tad, it felt surprisingly natural to pronounce the Norwegian words and not as natural to pronounce the German words I was learning, but it should be noted that I grew up in a very Norwegian county of MN. The older generations there sound a bit like the mom from Bobby's World.
True story: I met my husband during a Minnesota goodbye.
+Peachy Keen that sounds like the start of a good country song
Who cares?
Jane Goodnut who cares that you don't care? 😂
I don't understand why you would leave such a random comment. Its like me saying 'I saw a locust while brushing my teeth'. Its nonsensical.
Jane Goodnut It's not nonsensical. Cassie talked about Minnesota goodbyes in this video. Not sure why it bothers you so much. Maybe find something better to do with your time than criticize random strangers comments on a TH-cam video from over a year ago?
I'm from Minnesota & I find this completely offensive...haha just kidding! Glad to see another Minnesotan on the old YT!
Alright, excuse me while I come down from a bout of fangirling after seeing a comment from you on one of my videos; I adore your channel and being able to geek out on cartoons with you when you upload!! From one Minnesotan to another: you're a fantastic individual and deserve multiple casseroles as a reward :)
Im also Minnesotan
Thrift Thick
aww thanks - you're too nice :)
LewToons Nah, that's just the Minnesotan in me :)
Me too
"oofta" is actually from the norwegian "uff, da!" (whoa/oh man/yikes/ouch) ;)
Thanks for letting me know!! :D
I'm here because I didn't want to forget anything when I joke with my friends of our accent and sayings. I love it, it's hilarious and unique. But I tell ya, up there in the far North East coast. Their accent is similar and a little more stronger with the O's.
Wisconsin and northern Illinois really drag out their vowels. Having lived in Puerto Rico now for like 15 years working in the service industry, its fun meeting customers and guessing where their from, from their accent.
Uff da can be used as an expression of surprise, astonishment, exhaustion, relief and sometimes dismay. Within Scandinavian-American culture, Uff da frequently translates to: "I am overwhelmed", somewhat similar to the Yiddish phrase oy vey. Uff da can often be used as an alternative for many common obscenities.
I'm from Minnesota. Didn't even know some of these things were only Minnesota things. Are you sure we have accents?! I can't tell ... but than again I'm from Minnesota.
In the cities you don't hear the Minnesotan accent until you go further up north.
yeah I'm from minnesota and I have not noticed a accent at all
JonRulz2424 I'm from Missouri, and ya'll certainly do have an accent.
I'm also from Minnesota and I never noticed that we same some of these words different XD
Hayhay13 me too
Your accent is so cute!!! I have never met anyone from Minnesota before, I loved hearing your accent! :D
HollieEatsLipstick haha thank you Hollie!! And now you can say you officially know an 'authentic' Minnesotan XD
Haha yea we have awesome accents
Love you Holly 💖
I don't get how we have accents my sister says we. say bag wrong
I'm from Minnesota now you know👏
Me- thinking she sounds normal and can’t figure out why people say she talks differently
Also me- realizing I’m Minnesotan 🙄🙄
Being from Minnesota Its nice to know that somebody mentioned the Minnesota good-byes. The only good-byes that take 45 minutes.
somerandomdude23764 THIS IS SO MY DAD OML
Its like that here in south england too
at least!
i've been going through so many of these specifically for Minnesotans and FINALLY I relate to yours 100%.
Yayyyyy I'm so glad!! There are definitely some Minnesotan videos here on TH-cam that are shameful (no accent at. ALL.) to say the least so I'm glad I could do you and Minnesota proud ;)
YES POP FOREVER GOD BLESS THE MIDWEST
im from Chicago and i call it Coke...
amistry605 bruh
Natalie it is POP not SODA
I went to cali and asked for pop and the lady just looked confused and said okay. She brought me back the chefs "pop" as in special
Mackenzie Jackson omg be careful what you say to people not from our land
When I went to the doctor in MN (NY native) I spent forever looking for some sort of gian asphalt ramp because I was told to park in the "parking ramp". After half an hour and several phone calls to the office I finally realized the receptionist was describing a parking garage. Looks like a building not like a ramp, granted there are ramps within the parking garage. LOL. Confusing to non-natives.
I think the MN accent is one of the most musical and beautiful the English-speaking world has. And I’m surprised to hear that it’s so much like how we talk in the NW of England!
We say “daddy long legs” and “pop”...or “fizzy pop”! And our vowels are very similar.
Don’t alter your accent to adapt to anyone. It’s gorgeous.
And we say “bobble” for your “hair elastic”...why?!
I'm from Ohio and yes carbonated beverages are most def "pop" haha
sam wyatt I’m glad we won’t have any problems
Coke sounds so better 😋 but in not here for war lol
caught the crappie... I like how fish is the first thing we (Minnesotans) think with the word caught
I love the Minnesotan accent out of all American accents.
Yay I'm glad haha!
The Hamster thanks for the complement
The Hamster thanks
i love minnesota accents! people from Minnesota that ive met were very positive and warm and kind. They all had an interesting hobby and were intersting and engaging in conversation!
im from Minnesota and i also say or-leans so maybe its minnesotan...
Ahnika O'Hare same here
Ahnika O'Hare That's how most northerners say it, its kind of one of those north vs south pronunciations. I'm from the south and everyone I know from around here and other southerns states say "new orlins"
Ahnika O'Hare I do too
Ahnika O'Hare I didn’t know u Would say it any other way?! Lean is lean so new or LEANS
I grew up saying it that way too. Now that I know otherwise I still have to think about both before choosing one. I do the same with "pecans".
I playing a video game and someone asked me where i was from to place my "accent". Im just like, "Wait I have an accent?". Then I find this video and now im like, "OOOOOOOOOH YEP I DEFINANTLY DO!"
I'm strongly Minnesotan people mistake me for being canadian and Canadians think im Canadian. it all matters where your from and how strong your family heritage is. Other minnesotans say i have a accent its just how i was raised and what part of minnesota im from. i grew up in a small town there was only one black guy in my school that was it. rest were white so not a lot of diversity if you grow up in the cities or around it theres a chance you picked up other ways to talk. Im the perfect stereotype minnesotan how i talk what i say my attitude towards other people is spot on.
Cryosphere v
No worries, I’m from NW suburbs of Chicago, moved to Florida 9 years ago, and everyone here thinks I’m from either Minnesota or Canada. It’s all good, my grandma was a Finnish immigrant who lived in northern Minnesota, so maybe that’s where it came from. Minnesota rules.
was the black guys name Token and is your name Stan?
OMG YES!!!! i totally agree, its POP!! my boyfriend calls it soda, and its soo annoying. im like dude, were from MN its POP!
My husband calls it soda too, but he''s from the east coast so he has an excuse!
Im minnesotan and I am proud to have a minnesotan accent
Oh my god, this is great. As a fellow Minnesotan this made me laugh my ass off.
+lavivachic Same here an I'm also Minnesotan
Kelsey same
Kelsey me too!
i am from Alabama. your accent is light. 95% of what you said is the way we say it except for the minnesota words and the poster.
Yeah, some parts of Kentucky and ohio say over 75% of these things the same. though im from MN and i just know that from traveling to those places.
I never knew about it, But I love that Minnesota good-bye. I wish we did it.
In Japan, you walk the person to the car or street and keep waving until they are out of sight.
That is very considerate of you, but I guess I would expect no less from the Japanese. Very considerate.
When I heard the phrase "car park" and/or "parking ramp", I literally said "what the serious fuck are those." Then I proceeded to research those phrases and found out she meant a parking lot. A "car park" at least makes some sense, but a parking ramp? People don't park on ramps, they park on flat surfaces (unless in a mall garage).
Amee Bird no no, we call parking lots parking lots as well. I think your "mall garage" is our "parking ramp" (where there are multiple levels to park on)
Thrift Thick Okay, so it's similar to a parking garage. This makes much more sense.
+Thrift Thick (Cassie) yup!
A parking ramp is like a tall building to park a lot of cars...in Minnesota a parking lot would be like going to Burger King or something
It's so true about the talking forever before you leave. When my mom says time to go I wait for about at least 20 minutes then leave
I'm from the Mississippi Gulf Coast, about an hour away from New Orleans (New Or-lins although half the time we call it NOLA (nole-uh)) and when referring to "TPing" a house, we call it "rolling." Like, "Before homecoming, my house got rolled." When it rains while the sun is shining, we've always said "the devil is beating his wife." NO clue where that came from lol. I love Minnesotan accents! I think they're cute and quirky.
Thanks for sharing the Minnesota accent with us. Hopefully your doing well. God loves you and forgives you.
Accent tayg.
Until I met my husband, who is from Oklahoma I never realized that people from other parts of the US called things different. I just thought people had different accents. The first time I call the little bugs that turn into a ball...a potato bug. My husband laughs at me and had never heard that until he moved to Oregon (where I live). Also he calls a grocery cart a "buggy". I always say "the ditch" not "a ditch". Great video as always!
I grew up in Mpls.....but when I lived in Florida for a year and now that I live in AZ...anytime I say “bag” people think I’m saying “beg” and vice versa. Annoys the snot out of me! 😂
I'm mixed raced my moms a Minnesotan and my dads an iowan
I am from Minnesota too, and it is great to see your video. It is impossible tohear your accent, since that is how I speak too. You are awsome and super duper pretty. You go girl!
Haha yay I'm glad you can't hear it XD And shucks thank you so much
I can't say Minnasota without my accent XD
Buttergodis my whole family is from Minnesota and I have an accent even thought I’ve never lived there😂😂 I also read things with the accent too
Haha I know! I have to really focus to say Minnesota the way national news anchors say it instead of with an accent.
I'm from the UK, and the Minnesotan accent is pure ASMR to me!
Well most of us dont have accents or, we just dont know
It's weird because I answered a lot of the questions in Spanish in my head. I guess I just name specific things in English and some in Spanish and never realized it.
THANK YOU! It's cart! hate when people call them "buggies" here in Texas 😂
Your answers were my answers except for the hair one, which I call "hair binders." You're adorable! -Lizzy (from MN.)
I was born and raised in South Carolina and as to your question, I would call it a hair bow. I know there’s no bow but that’s just what I call it. Oh and we put groceries in a buggy!!!!! Lol
I don't ever say don't cha know and I'm a Minnesotan ;(
Ive always said dont chu know and then like a persons name lol im from Northern mn
Are you from rural Minnesota or from an urban area?
Why don’t cha?
McKenna I think I’d say
Don’t ya know I’m pretty sure but IDK
Yay I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Also happy that you answered one of my questions for me I seriously had no idea :) I can't believe people don't know what oofta means lol!!!! So strange since it's so second-hand nature to me... almost like if someone asked what "ouch" meant haha. Which is kindof how you would use oofta; it's a noise you would make if you were lifting something heavy, maybe if you were getting out of bed in the morning and were really tired sill, etc. An exasperated expression! :)
HAHAH I live in minneapilis mn and she has a lot more of an accent then me...I love it tho😂
People in the Twin Cities don't have the accent.
So for the questions you were curious about, In the South, they pronounce the following things as...
Rolie Polie= Rolie Polie Olie
Soda=Soft Drink
Daddy Long Legs= Grand Daddy Long Legs
Grocery Cart=Shopping Cart or Trolley (Deep South)
-I had never heard of a Sun Shower....but we just say shower, or, some people reference a rainbow.
For question number 9 I call it something different I call it Minnesota cause you know it rains and it's sunny at times well a lot of the times. Minnesota weather is just bipolar
That works too ;)
Another thing about Minnesotan accents: I always grew up playing "duck, duck, grey duck". I guess people in other places call it "duck, duck, goose".
Megan YES!!! I know I can't believe I spaced on that one! I absolutely stand by 'duck, duck, grey duck' and cringe whenever I hear 'duck, duck, goose' (though that's definitely the preferred way of saying it around the country) haha :)
so for the question about “what you call it when the suns shining and it’s raining” i live in Atlanta but a lot of ppl in the south call it when “the devils beating his wife” it sounds weird but that’s what we call it
I agree with you!!! I live in Minnesota! But I call it a hair binder
lol yess...my hubby is from Oklahoma and he calls every kind of soda "coke". He said thats what everyone does.
I love this so much! I'm a Minnesota girl :)
Minnesota streets are only black ice in during winter I swear.
uh, duh.
HAHAHAH I SERIOUSLY LOLED. Glad my makeup looked oofta, that's exactly what I was going for ;) And yayyyyyy I'm so happy your life is now complete with this video!! I truly did it with you in mind haha. I was pretty impressed with how Minnesotan I sounded as well, ESPECIALLY when I said "you bet'cha"... I was honestly like "ARE YOU SERIOUS UUUUUUUUGH/OOFTA guess I have to leave that in there" hahahahahha I honestly don't realize how freaking Minnesotan I sound sometimes XD
You're freakin' adorable!! I love your perky demeanor and that sweet semi-Canadian accent haha.
Thank you, fair maiden ;)
P.S - those eyes, those eyes? okay? seriously..(mindblow)
Always will love Minnesota .
Hey, fellow Minnesotan youtuber! How 'bout you put on some overalls and bring a casserole over here to share, and I'll have some jagermeister and tapioca pudding ready to go. Hahaha! We'll have a good old time.
Off-beat Homesteader
Make sure its tater tot XD
Except it’s not a casserole, it’s a hot dish. 😆
We never say that... we are still normal lol
Seriously? It's *hotdish*
I absolutely love this accent.
You know what, I thought about telling you what we call things like when it's raining and the sun is shining at the same time, but I think I'll just do this and link you to it!
I went to Washington D.C. And tried to order a pop and they were like wtf was that
Hahahahhaha yeah…. people sometimes ;)
TEH ATHEIST I can’t! 🤣🤣😂🤣🤣🤣
I went to Chicago once and ordered a soda... they brought me plain, carbonated soda water 🤢
YAYYYYYYY a fellow "pop" sayer :D So sad that we've both converted to "soda" haha... we can mourn together. And oh, yes, pill bugs!! I totally forgot about that; now that you mention it I have called them that before but basically always say rolie polie because it's cuter/more fun to say lol. Doodle bugs though? That's completely new to me, thanks for sharing!! Finding out about these speech differences is so much fun for me ^__^
What you said about saying goodbyes in Minn. was so funny. I live near L.A. and we're similar. I live the " you betcha" tho. Good vid!
Love not live ...oops.
Oofta, sounds like the Nprwegian 'uffda :) Uffda means, for an example: when someone falls of their bike (unless it is serious) and hit their - well, knee - (again not an serious injury or anything) you can say - uffda, are you okay? Not sure if the word, Oofta, means the same, but it would be interesting to know! :)
Yup it's pretty much the exact same thing here!! Or you can use it in instances like if you lift something heavy, when you're struggling to pick/lift it up and then finally do you exclaim "oofta!" :)
Yes, ha! :) How cool :)
That's a good example of when we say uffda in Minnesota. Another way we use it is "Uffda, it's cold out." Or you almost spill a glass of water at the table you say "uffda", or you lift something you can say "uffda that was heavy." Or "Do you smell the lutefisk? Uffda. "
The term actually comes from Norwegian settlers, so it makes a lot of sense. During some time a lot of them moved to that region, I don't remember when.
It's typically spelled "Uffda" here too. They are the same. There are various unofficial spellings though. I see "oofda" often too. Don't even get me started on Uffda tacos which, in their case, have nothing to do with Norway but are just another excuse to say "Uffda" in MN.
I call a hair tie a ponytail holder or just hair tie,I had a friend who called it a "tony brow" and i also call a remote a "channel changer" which people seem to think is weird.
I'm from Southern Idaho and it's always "the ditch" when we talk too. But I grew up in a very country farming community, so everything was general and not "a" specific. I've never heard it called a "sun shower" until I started watching these accent tags. It was always just "raining" or "sprinkling". And also, it's "hair tie" around here. Unless you call them "hair bows", which I never understood.
your eyes are so gorgeous. you are gorgeous too. I hope you know that already. :)
Soda. Roly-poly is also called a potato bug I always called or known it as roly-poly. Nana and Grandad for grandparents. Hair ties. Moving to Grand Rapids soon from Cali. About is a perfect tag word for MN folks
"Crraaann" for Crayon? wow
Same for me!
yup we say craaan
everyone says "craan", don'tcha know?
Yep cran
Whoo-hoo a fellow Minnesotan!! I'm very proud, no worries... glad you are too! :D
In England a "shopping cart" is called a "trolley" and "sports shoes" are "trainers" (think the America-ism of that is "sneakers"). :P
Finally someone who has an ACTUAL Minnesota accent. I love my accent
You know you're Minnesotan when you come up with an example for 'caught' you say "I caught the crappie"
D'awwww thank you Sarah!! I'm so glad you like my videos ^__^ And yeah, I feel like it's something either people don't notice at all or else they notice it and think it's REALLY strong... strange dichotomy there but it definitely goes both ways!
Aw yay thank you I'm so glad you enjoyed!! Gahhhhhh and yes SO many people are telling me about potato bugs HAHAHH. That is SO funny, seriously I had no idea.
Pill bugs but I grew up in Illinois but Minnesotan for 21 years!
LOL, I am also from Minnesota and I did this tag video for my first You Tube. I laughed so hard at "the boat" part.
Glad you got a kick out of it!! Haha I definitely can't say boat any other way T__T
11. (hair) Binder! I went to college in WI and friends didn't know what I meant when I asked them to borrow a "binder". They all called them "hair ties".
Another tell from WI, N. Dakota and MN is "egg." In the Upper Midwest, people pronounce it "ayg."
Doesn't matter that other people have answered, I love hearing YOUR answers so thank you for posting them for me ^__^ I hadn't heard the Grand-daddy long legs answer yet (surprisingly cute) and each time someone says the devil answer I can't help but crack up (so funny). Southern charm indeed!
Thank you for all of your answers!! Very fun to read through all of them ^__^ And hahahh yeah "the"/"a"... it's all very confusing; makes me realize why English is one of (if not THE) hardest language for people to learn!
I'm from MN and for the hair rubber band I call it a binder.
As a minnesotan i will counter and say i grew up calling remote controllers, a "clicker". My parents called them that for years... and still sometimes do.
A roly poly is also called a Doodle bug (in Louisiana) and the spider one is a Grand Daddy Long legs here!!
I'm from North Dakota and I found a lot of these to be the same. I have found myself saying "uff da" and "ya know" before. I can also relate to the ditch thing and the long goodbyes!
Yup, us northern/middle states do tend to sound the same/similar ^__^
I'm Australian and I say "new or-Leans". Glad I'm not the only one!
Perfect! Moved to NY and everyone makes fun of me for saying binder for my hair.. and pop is definitely one. This was great :)
SO happy you enjoyed the video Linzie!! ^__^
For the last one, I call it a liga (Lee-ga) , because everyone where I live in California speaks Spanish.. I've never heard anyone here say anything else but a liga (liga just means hair tie in Spanish)
Oh my gosh, that's crazy! We have bobbles here as well but they're a specific kind of hair tie that little girls wear with two plastic balls on the ends of the hair tie loops... they're pretty peculiar to describe but I think every little girl I knew (including myself!) growing up wore them!! :)
Ohh.meant to add on my other message. Another question I would love to see on this tag..What do you call a small stream of water? Here in Oregon almost everyone calls it a "crick"...which I hate..lol. I always rebelled from my friends and family and called it a "creek".
Hahah yayyyyyyy POP FTW ALWAYS AND FOREVER!!!!! Silly eastern and southern states :p And you're so sweet, thank you so much for the lovely comment ^__^
Hahah yes N'awlins... so cute. I love it when people native to that state say it in their heavy accent ^__^
In Australia we call "Rolley-Pollies", "Butchey-Boys" and "Shopping Carts" are just "Trollies" hare in Australia, so theres the answer to, what do others call "Rolley-Pollies" :)
Yeah, sure, you betcha. I'm from Minnesota also. I lived in New Orleans, and they say it Nawleans.
Minnisota in the way you say things is very similar to here the UK. You also have a beautiful raggie like me! 💖 Words like the way you say "New Orleans" .. And "EN-velope" .. The same. Xx
Funny story; I'm from
Iowa and didn't even realize you had an accent because you sound like I do when I talk lol except i call it a hair tie or pony tail holder:)
great last question :P most people I know, including myself, call them bobbles. But I so rarely hear that anywhere else!
Haha I feel like I hear bobbles from UK people all the time :p Here in the states though they're a completely different hair accessories… bobbles are the elastics with little plastic balls on the ends that little girls wear in their hair!
This is the best thing ever being born and raised in MN
New Orleans
You did very well on both and I also day Mayo. I'm from Nawlins and about to move to Minnesota in a few months. Only thing that worries me, are the floods. Many things you are saying is very similar to New Orleans. But, New Orleans once owned Minnesota.
WOW you've got some great answers!! Very fun to read through, thank you so much for sharing :D And thank you, I'm so glad you liked the makeup as well!!
2. We don't have these bugs where I'm from - that I know of anyways.
4. Sneakers.
5. By's, the by's, you by's, or 'the lot of ya.'
6. A rain spider - dandy long legs are a completely different creature where I live (they have wings!).
7. Nan (or Nanny) & Pop (or Poppy).
11. An elastic.
Also, we say "the ditch" and a stream of water is a "brooke" or a "stream." :)
i love this Im from Minnesota also
I was down south for a little and I'm born and raised in Minnesota as well, but I was teased about saying the work flag... I guess we bring out the "a" sound in the word flag. Same with the word bag. Hahahahaha. Apparently "we" say flaaaaaag and baaaaaag.
Haha I wasn't aware of that!!!
