    I am learning Spanish and have been for a while but I still struggle a lot with talking in the past tense and using subjunctive. I thought to myself that maybe instead of watching native Spanish speakers teach Spanish, maybe I need to try watching none native Spanish speakers who are fluent teach Spanish. That’s when I came across this channel, and I am happy I did. The way Paul teaches Spanish is outstanding and he makes it very easy to understand parts of the language I didn’t understand before. This is channel is exactly what I needed to level up my Spanish skills. Keep up the great work!

      I hope it does better but I have a feeling it will not. When it comes to learning a foreign language, the majority of self-learners seem to prefer the a la carte approach to learning. Thank you for the excellent work on your channel! I have learned alot here and you are an excellent teacher! In the example at 6:26, (Do you want me to tell Dan that we can't go to his party) why wasn't "podemos ir" "vayamos" instead?

    • @QrooSpanish
      @QrooSpanish  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Vayamos would be in the subjunctive - we go. In this case, it we are not using the subjunctive because we are only sharing information. We cannot go. Poder means to be able so that is our first verb - No podemos (we can't)....we only conjugate the first verb in the series so we stick on IR: No podemos ir (we can't go).

    You're a star, I found you on Friday, by the end of this week I'll probably get fired because I can't stop watching your videos.
    Quick question here. ¿Quieres que vaya a la tienda? How do we know that it´s "Do you want ME..." instead "Do you want HIM ...".
    Do I have to always rely on the context? Or can it be more like ¿Quieres que me vaya a la tienda? or ¿Quieres que el vaya a la tienda?. If me and my son are in the same room and I am asking my wife this question, it can relate to either of us.

    • @QrooSpanish
      @QrooSpanish  ปีที่แล้ว

      It is from context. If there are only two of you talking, the assumption is that it is you that you are referring to. If I was asking if she wants to go to the store, I would use infintives: Quieres ir a la tienda a comprar limones. - Do you want to go to the store to buy limes? Or quieres que vaya a la tienda -- or do you want me to go to the store (subject change).

    Pluperfect subjunctive as well.

    • @QrooSpanish
      @QrooSpanish  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You'll like the next episode. With that trigger, I will be doing examples with the imperfect subjunctive and present subjunctive. As far as the future subjunctive is concerned, it considered obsolete in everyday speech and has been replaced with the present or imperfect subjunctive. It is still used in legal documents some set literary phrases, but its usage is so limited that I won't be covering it all. You can speak Spanish perfectly without ever having to use it. The perfect and pluperfect subjunctive will likely make a few appearances. The latter comes out when I start to do hypothetical if then scenarios.

    Hey Qroo,
    Huge fan of your work here. But could you potentially elaborate on what exactly is a ‘subject change’?
    Your first example with querer, ‘I want to wash the car before it rains’, why is it rains a subject change? You are still talking about the rain in relation to the car being washed. I would just love a little more clarification on the idea of a subject change, as silly as that may seem haha.
    Thanks Paul.

    • @QrooSpanish
      @QrooSpanish  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Kurt. It helps to think of the clauses as separate sentences: I eant to wash the car. Who is ghe subject? I (me).
      It rains. Who is the subject? It isn't me anymore. The subject controls the verb. "It" is the subject.
      I hope that helps.

      Some of the verbs in the example are pronominal (recuperarse, quedarse, acostarse). When you conjugate those in the present tense:
      me acuesto - I go to bed
      te acuestas - you go to bed
      se acuesta - he/she 3rd person goes to bed
      nos acostamos - we went to bed
      se acuesta - they / you pural go to bed
      That's where that TE is coming from with some verbs

    It should be Lavar instead of Levantar?

    • @QrooSpanish
      @QrooSpanish  ปีที่แล้ว

      No, levantar la mesa means to clear the table. It's an expression. Lavar would be to eash the table. Another option is quitar la mesa.

    I wish my husband would ask me what I want him to do that often. LOL!! Wait... I need to practice my subjunctive: Deseo que mi esposo me preguntaría tanto lo que yo quiera. (Ok, I'm already stuck because it seems like I need both verbs to be subjunctive. Would you use subjunctive there or conditional?)

      The second version feels more like "I want him to ask me", instead of "I wish he would ask me"

      You chose a tricky one to conjugate. Although desear is often translated as to wish (te deseo un buen dia - I wish you a good day), there are better ways to express the type of wish you mean here. One of the common ones is to use a word ojalá. It is translated as "to hope" with the present subjunctive and "to wish" with the imperfect subjunctive:
      Ojalá no llueva. Hopefully, it doesn't rain. I hope it doesn't rain (even though you are not the subject it comes from context if you say it)
      Ojalá mi marido me preguntara qué quiero todo el día. - I wish my husband would ask me what I want all day.
      This is a good lesson for the subjunctive series and I will probably also do a separate videos about it for the "a la carte" learners who don't follow that series. :)

      @@QrooSpanish Thanks! yeah, I admit I got deseo from google because I was stuck as to what to use for "wish". (the German wunsch is a more direct translation). I didn't realize you could use ojalá that way since I think of that as more "hopefully."

    Why does "¿Quieres que le diga a Dan que no podemos ir a su fiesta?" use "que le", while "Quieres que te ayude a pone la mesa?" uses "que te" instead?

    • @QrooSpanish
      @QrooSpanish  ปีที่แล้ว

      Those are indirect object pronouns and they have to agree with the person you are referring to:
      me- me
      te- you (tú form)
      le - 3rd person and you formal (usted)
      nos - us
      les - 3rd person plural and ustedes
      In this case, I am telling DAN...the LE means TO HIM in this case.

      @@QrooSpanish So in that sentence would "you" be the subject and "I/me" be the direct object?

    • @QrooSpanish
      @QrooSpanish  ปีที่แล้ว

      This sentence is really two clauses, each with it's own subject: Quieres que te ayude a pone la mesa?
      Clause one: Do you want: quieres (you is the subject that controls the verb)
      Clause two: that I help you. (subject that controls the verb: I. Who am I potentially helping? you. So in the second clause "you" is the object.

      Actually I was asking about the other sentence "¿Quieres que le diga a Dan que no podemos ir a su fiesta?" which in English is "Do you want me to tell Dan that we can't go to his party?". I can see that the first clause would be "Do you want" with "you" as the subject and "want" as the verb (and no objects). I believe the second clause would be "me to tell Dan that" with "me" as the subject and "to tell" as the verb. Since you already said that Dan is the indirect object, would that make the words I speak to him the direct object, or what would be? As for the third clause "we can't go to his party" it appears that "we" is the subject, "go" is the verb, "his" is the direct object and "party" is the indirect object. Do I have all this right?

    Pet Peeve.... please quit associating the word "Yo" with the English word "I"
    Everything makes so much more sense once you just accept that Spanish doesn't have an equivalent to the word "I" in English. This is 100% the job of the verb conjugations.
    Yo= Me
    If you say "Yo estoy muy bien" you're not saying "I I am very well" You're saying "Me, I'm very well." Which is why you see it only when someone is looking to add that extra emphasis.
    Otherwise, LOVE this video series. Nailing it.
