      My pleasure Natalie! I'm glad that my videos help preserve your sanity! I know what you mean, it can be scary when you start to see red losses but remember, when we are buying stocks, we are owning parts of the company. So have faith in the future of the company! I don't really care what happens to TD stock tomorrow because I know for a fact that the company TD will continue to grow and be around and enormously successful 30 years from now =)

      TD was my first bank account and second stock purchase. I’ve made enough in dividends to pay for another stock. It’s lowkey awesome. Wish I started earlier. It’s great to know I’m on the right path.

    Great to see you again, Adrian! Instead of being scared in this market drop, I’m learning to continue to invest while the stock prices are lower. I did invest in Manulife & Smart Centre in recent months. It’s kind of shocking to see how low TD , and RBC prices have reduced.. but makes it easier to buy more shares.

      You got it Missy! I have made several videos on what to do during a Market Crash (check the playlist below) 👇
      But you're right! The vast majority of people are overly emotional, meaning that they give into fear and they panic when the price drops but the important thing to keep in mind is that NOTHING HAS CHANGED with the company itself! It's still the same company making a profit, so the drop in the share price is just an opportunity to buy MORE shares at a discount! Check out my other videos on what to do during a Market Crash =)

      Yes when it comes to REITs, you really should hold them in your tax-sheltered accounts like the TFSA or RRSP since those dividends (distributions) are taxed heavier. And absolutely you should hold US stocks in your RRSP, especially if they pay dividends since the RRSP is the ONLY place where US dividends are 100% tax-sheltered! =)

    1:30 you mention that you only hold REITs in your TFSA to avoid tax, but SmartCentres is in your RRSP. Is there a particular reason why you've done it this way?

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I talked about SmartCenters in my Members-Only Portfolio Reveal videos but the simple reason is that my TFSA was maxed out! Since I have already been working for over 10 years, I had considerably more RRSP room available than TFSA room and when I started buying SmartCenters, I knew that I wouldn't have the TFSA room necessary to reach a DRIP so I decided to buy it in my RRSP instead. It really doesn't matter, for Canadian REITs and dividends they are both 100% tax sheltered in either an RRSP or a TFSA

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      As I talk about in my RRSP Explained videos, I generally prioritize US Dividends in my RRSP since the RRSP is the only place where US dividends are 100% tax free (since US dividends are charged a 15% withholding tax in a TFSA) but I do hold some Canadian stocks and REITs as well in my RRSP including SmartCentres. If I had more TFSA room, I would have bought it in my TFSA instead to keep all my Canadian REITs together but it was just a matter of available room =)

      Thanks George for those kind words. As you say, TH-cam posts the upload date directly underneath every video, for this video it was uploaded on Sep 18, 2022. Again, I am a long term investor and these 2 stocks have been my favourite investments for almost 10 years. The main value of this video is explaining the business practice and financial health of these companies, NOT the current share price which fluctuates every minute. So even if you are watching this video a few months later, 90% of the info is still valuable. Of course you should always research a stock to see the current conditions before you buy =)

    Hi Adrian, very happy to have your video. I learned many knowledge about the investment and saving in Canada. May I share my question with you on comparison between investing RBC and TD? I found that the Beta (5Y Monthly) of RBC is 0.76, TD's 0.88. They have same 4% appx. dividend yield. Should we pick the lower beta one (RBC)? is that mean RBC is more stable and lower volatility compared to the whole market? Thank you.

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You don't have to pick one or the other, I invest in both! The beta is just one factor among dozens to consider when analyzing a stock! At the end of the day, both banks have a bright future, long history of increasing dividends and growing profits so I like both of them. I just prefer TD because of their US expansion strategy and they are more client-focused than RBC which is more corporate focused =)

    what about ZEB ETF?

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      ZEB is an ETF that just contains the 6 big Canadian banks. Personally I'm not a fan of ZEB because they're charging you a pretty high management fee of 0.28% every single year just to hold 6 stocks.... I can easily buy those 6 stocks individually and avoid that annual fee! The main benefit of an ETF is built-in diversification so I prefer ETFs that contains dozens or hundreds of stocks! For just 6 stocks, buy them yourself =)

    Hi Adrian. I am in the process of transferring in my portfolio from EJ to Questrade. I have a question regarding buying dividend stocks and Drips. While at EJ they did fractional shares so it was not an issue. Questrade only re-invests whole share. My question being, is it better to keep topping up say TD to get to the DRIP threshold sooner, or better to buy TD one month then stocks in a different sector like BCE to keep the portfolio fairly balanced the next and just take a longer time to get to the DRIP threshold for all sectors? Thanks Adrian and keep the vids coming, learning a lot from you and looking forward to saving all that extra money with Questrade to invest.

Thanks for your help and always nice to watch and listen your precious informations!

    • @CanadianTShirt

      That's why I record the BOOK value and not the market value! The Market Value changes every minute of every day so I don't bother recording that, I just let Questrade handle that for me. But the Book Value is how much money I put in so I only update that a few times a year, when I buy new shares or when I receive a DRIP. Likewise with the dividend, most companies only increase their dividend once a year so I update that when it happens. I like doing it manually, it forces me to reflect and keep track of my portfolio as a whole =)

      Not at all! Canadian dividends are REITs are 100% tax-sheltered in both the TFSA and RRSP account! The only difference between them, like you said is when it comes to US dividends. • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You don't have control of that! For example, Amazon does not pay a dividend. They have never paid a dividend, most tech stocks don't pay dividends. But one day, Amazon might decide that it's time to start flowing their profits out to investors through dividends. If that's the case, then people holding their Amazon stock in their TFSA will start to pay that 15% withholding tax, which is unexpected. The same thing happens with ETFs. You can't control what stocks the ETF holds, the fund manager does that but they will keep you informed if they make a significant change like that. I hope that helps! =)

      Check out my DRIPS EXPLAINED video below to learn how it all works! Basically a DRIP occurs when the dividend you receive is enough to buy yourself an extra share of the stock. So for TD, if you bought $8,510 worth of TD stock right now, you would own enough shares so that the dividends every 3 months will be enough to buy a new share automatically =)

      Of course, you do NOT need to reach this $8510 amount all at once! It took me 6 years to reach a DRIP with TD. Invest what you can and work your way up to it. And check out my DRIPs Explained video below =)

    Hi Adrian! Great videos. Could you help me understand why someone would buy REITs and dividends stocks in a TFSA instead of an S&P 500 ETF? Wouldn’t VFV/VOO capital appreciation grow faster than distributions/dividends income? I understand the 15% withholding tax concern.

      It's all about diversification! You should not pick one or the other! Invest in BOTH! Yes the S&P 500 is one of the best investments in the world but it is heavily dominated in tech and it only includes US companies. You also want exposure of the Canadian market and other sectors like Real Estate to get a balanced portfolio =)

      Watch my video on WHY DIVIDENDS, there are many benefits of dividends over growth-oriented investing. Especially in a bear market since your money is ALWAYS working for you and you are never wasting time. But again, it's not one or the other, do both! =)

      Hi Adrian, question: I noticed your proportion invested into VDY was quite small compared to REI or TD. Why not just put all your funds into a high dividend ETF like VDY? That’s diversified, low cost, and a large amount would start the DRIP snowball. It looks like you’re buying similar holdings individually.

    Didn't RioCan suspend its DRIP in 2017? Wouldn't that make it impossible to setup a DRIP even if you had enough shares?

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are correct! RioCan suspended their DRIP years ago but that's why I set up my DRIPs through my broker, Questrade NOT directly with the company! Enbridge also suspended their DRIP about 3 years ago but for both RioCan and Enbridge, I set up a DRIP through Questrade so that I can DRIP ANY stock or ETF I want, even if the company itself no longer offers a DRIP! Check out my DRIP video to learn exactly how to do that! =)

      @@CanadianTShirt I use Qtrade - Are you aware whether or not it's possible to set one up through them as a broker? With either Rio Can, Enbridge, or any other stock that doesn't normally support a DRIP?

    Should we buy Normal stocks like TD and RBC also in TFSA ?

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Absolutely you should! There's no reason to pay taxes on your investments when you have tax-sheltered room waiting for you! The majority of my TD shares are in my TFSA but once my TFSA was maxed out, I had to start buying new shares in my Margin account =)
