    Hey guys I've been receiving a lot of emails of people requesting "Edit Permissions" on my DIVIDEND DRIP TRACKER EXCEL SHEET
    You don't need to do that! All you have to do is click the link below and then click "Download" ⬇️
    bit.ly/2O4f3sr
    You will download this as an Excel file and now you can enter your own numbers and do whatever you like with it! 😃

    For the longest time I only had one stock with a DRIP. Additional investment went into a mutual fund. I recently sold this off to buy stocks. I was torn between buying one new stock with enough to DRIP or buying four different stocks to diversify my portfolio. In the end I went with four stocks.

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Diversification is the name of the game! I get how tempting it is to put all your money into one stock to reach DRIP status as soon as possible but you NEVER want to put all your eggs in one basket! Build up to the DRIP across multiple stocks, step by step! You'll get there! =)

  • @nazimrahman
    @nazimrahman 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thank you for a fantastic explanation. I use the dividends from all my stocks to buy whatever is selling at a deep discount. In 8 years of investing, I have always been able to find something on sale every month. The problem with DRIP approach is that you continue buying even when the price the stock becomes overpriced. The discounted price more than covers the $4.95 lost in commission. Great video.

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's true that you give up control on when to actually buy the shares but in the long run, "time in the market beats trying to time the market"
      But if you want to take full control of your dividends and buy whatever is at a discount, then go for it! For everyday investors who don't want to be so active everyday, DRIPs are a great option =)

    • @TheCogitech
      @TheCogitech ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CanadianTShirt Very true. More importantly, actively trading could trigger the CRA to consider you a day trader, which could possibly lead them to tax all the dividends and capital gains even if it is in a sheltered account like a TFSA. This recently happened to a guy. He was stuck with a tax bill over $200,000 for actively trading in his TFSA.

    Hi Adrian. You probably wont see this message.
    Im a french guys (most of the time in a tshirt) who's settling in canada.
    Thanks to your channel I am learning a lot.
    I had a small piece of curiosity / feedback to give you if you ever choose to update this video.
    You mention the drip can sometime leave some extra cash that goes in your pocket because it was not enough money to reinvest to buy a single share.
    I was thinking that some1 who wanted to really push the idea to the maximum would save this extra cash and manually buy extra shares each time it's possible.
    Idk if it would have a ridiculously small impact or not on the curve I was just wondering.
    Any way great job. Keep it up
    Tim

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bonjour Tim! Surprise, I DO see your messages and I try my best to respond to as many questions as I can every day! 😁
      What I do is whatever little cash I have leftover from my DRIPs, I use that cash to buy one or two shares of an ETF (something like XEI which has a really small share price) That way, I never have cash just sitting there collecting dust. And remember with questrade, I do NOT pay commission fees when I buy ETFs so even if I'm buying just $20 at a time, it won't cost me anything =)

    I am practicing calculating DRIPs for some of the stocks I would like to buy. Today I have calculated that current DRIP of KO is $8481.78 and DUK would cost $11,017.65. I just wanted to make sure I am calculating correctly because these DRIPs are quite different from when you posted this video BUT its been 2 years and the DRIPS might have changed significantly.
    Thanks for your help!

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You got it Shanna! Those numbers look right to me! Always remember to use an inflated share price in the DRIP calculations because you expect the share price to grow over time =)

      @shannacutting4855 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CanadianTShirt Thanks you for confirming! And how often, roughly, should I check in to recalculate the DRIP to make sure I still qualify? I noticed in your video you check in because, for example, it is better to consistently qualify for 3 additional stocks rather than 2.9 since you can't get a fraction of a share. Do you have any recommendation on how often to check in on this to maximize growth but also not drive yourself crazy by checking daily lol?

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@shannacutting4855 great question! You definitely should NOT be checking your portfolio daily! That will drive you mad and likely lead you to panic and sell on emotions... I recommend checking your portfolio about once a week, mainly to see if you have cash sitting there from dividends that you want to reinvest in ETFs. Personally, I go through my whole portfolio about once a month to update my DRIPs and my Excel sheet but whenever I do receive a significant dividend or a DRIP, I also update my Excel sheet for that stock. It's not hard, I just update the new shares I earned, the new book value and I update the dividend amount if it increased and the Max_Value if the share price grew. Honestly it takes me about 30 seconds in total so it's worth doing it regularly =)

    Great video overall, and i agree that using a DRIP is almost always preferable. However, i think its slightly misleading to not include the opportunity cost. The shares are not 'free', the money you gain from dividends could be used to purchase growth stocks or pay down a loan. I understand that the your stratagy is stable sustainagle growth , but i just think that assuming the dividend will be spent frivolously makes that option seem worse than it should in the graph.

  • @sundharamalss515
    @sundharamalss515 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Hey !! Your Millenial Investing guide is the best thing out there!! Your explanations are clear and precise. The excel files are great. Kudos to you for doing this. I have a couple of doubts. Let's say I have bought TD stocks, with a DRIP of 2.5. So as you mentioned in the video, I would be getting 2 more shares and 0.5 as cash in the first quarter and another 2 more shares with 0.5 in cash in the subsequent one. Does Questrade buy me an extra share(0.5+0.5) if I don't cash out?
    Second, could you explain about the PE ratio and what range is the best to see if a purchase is good? It would be great if you could explain the rest of the jargon that you haven't mentioned in the videos and important factors to look into buying a stock in a video. Because no one can explain it the way you do.
    Once again, a great set of videos. I wish I had access to these years ago! Anyway, looking forward to your upcoming videos and improving wealth as a community. Happy to have subscribed to your videos brother! Take care!!

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thank you Sundharam! I appreciate your support as always, you've been one of my longest running subscribers back when I was just talking about credit cards! To answer your question, unfortunately they will not combine past fractions of DRIPs. If you have a DRIP of 2.5, you will receive 2 shares and the remaining 0.5 will be paid out as cash. Once that happens, that dividend is fully paid out, you can do whatever you want with that cash. The next time the dividend comes, if you haven't bought any further shares and the share price remains the same, you will get the exact same thing: you will earn 2 shares and the remainder will be paid out in cash. You can't choose to NOT cash out.
      Secondly, you read my mind! I will be working on a video where I offer a step-by-step guide on what I look for when I research a stock to buy such as P/E ratio, debt values, payout ratio, dividend growth etc. Stay tuned for that! =)

    Another great video! What do you recommend to someone who has a smaller amount of money to qualify for drips on only one or two trusted stocks vs diversifying more by going with ETFs instead.

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      If you have a small amount of money, I would suggest investing in a dividend ETF instead of investing directly into one or two stocks. You don't want to put all your eggs in one basket, even if it's a stock you really trust. Diversification is super important and you gain that from either investing in dozens of companies across different sectors OR the easiest way to diversify is to invest in ETFs

    • @CanadianTShirt

      In this video, I only showed DRIPs on dividend stocks in my examples but you can apply DRIPs on ETFs, it's the exact same thing! Check out my video on my favourite Canadian Dividend ETFs to get a sense of what kind of things to look for in an ETF:

    In your "DIVIDEND DRIP TRACKER EXCEL SHEET" How do you find out the max value of the stock?

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's a rough formula I do in my head, just to give me some wiggle room in case the share prices goes up. Basically, I look at the max share price over the past 52 weeks (one year) and then I add an extra 5%. If I feel like a stock is growing at a very fast rate, and everyday is a new max-value, then I add more than 5%. I hope that helps and excellent question! =)

      Drew Lyons Those are good reasons not to have ALL your money in REITs, but RioCan is pretty solidly positioned. People have been saying online sales will hurt brick-and-mortar for a long time. Whenever I drive by the mall, the parking lot is still full!

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@drewl4062 Those concerns are definitely valid and retail will be changing in the upcoming years but I feel that RioCan has a diverse and solid portfolio of properties. If you look at RioCan's biggest tenants, they are established retailers which I don't think will ever go away, companies like: Canadian Tire, Walmart, Goodlife, Home Depot, Winners, Costco, Sobeys, Metro, Rexall and Shoppers Drug Mart

    • @CanadianTShirt

    Hi Adrian, I've learned so much from you this past week I can't thank you enough.
    I have a question. Say I invested enough in riocan (at the vastly reduced price it's at currently) to qualify for a drip. Then the price begins to recover quickly in the coming months. Will I have to purchase additional shares in riocan to avoid falling behind on qualifying for a drip? Thanks in advance, and for all the info. :)

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks Blaine for those kind words! And you are exactly right. It is easy to qualify for a DRIP today at the reduced price so you'll need a smaller number than the number I calculated in this video since this video was made before the crash. But once the stock price rises, you will need to buy more stocks to qualify for a DRIP. It doesn't matter when you buy the stocks, it matters how many stocks you own when the dividend is paid! So if the price rises and on the dividend payment date, the dividend is no longer enough to buy a new stock, then the DRIP won't go through and you'll just receive cash. I hope that helps! =)

      It's definitely a balancing act! You have to make the decision on how long you want to invest for and when you want to start spending the money. Yes that is true but generally, if you are going to hold a dividend stock that means that you believe in its long term future. If you don't believe that you should reinvest in a stock, then it's unlikely that you would be holding it in the first place! But you're right, if for whatever reason you want to use the dividend as cash, you can cancel your DRIP at any time and do what you want with it! =)

    I so appreciate all your videos and your responsiveness to questions. One thing on my mind today, is the pros and cons of different ways to approach building up a portfolio of various DRIPS... I wonder if it make sense to focus cash toward one stock or ETF at a time until it reaches enough shares to maintain the DRIP, before moving on to channel cash toward a different ETF or stock. Or, does it make sense to diversify more and spread out cash between more things first, even if that means not everything is able to have a DRIP? So far, I've been leaning more towards the former, as I want to get the DRIPs up and running ASAP, but I'd appreciate your thoughts on ways to approach developing the portfolio

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Diversification is the name of the game! I totally get the temptation.... you want to focus all in on one stock to reach that DRIP as soon as possible but please don't do that since you are putting all your eggs in one basket! This is especially risky when you're just starting out! Instead, spread out your investment over several stocks and ETFs and slowly build up to the DRIP status across the board. Sure it will take longer but it is safer =)

    Great video. To check my understanding, with the current RioCan share price today (17.24), the investment amount required to qualify for a DRIP would be 2476.81? That’s quite the difference from when you posted this video haha

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's true! Since March when the markets crashed, RioCan has significantly dropped in value so it's been much easier to qualify for DRIPs and that's good news since for the past 10 months, I've almost DOUBLED the amount of free DRIP shares that I normally should be receiving each month! Keep in mind that RioCan announced that they will be reducing their dividend and this takes into effect in January so you'll have to adjust your calculation again. At that point, it will have a more "normal" dividend yield of around 5.5% so the DRIP amount will be higher as well!

I do have a question: you've stressed the importance of diversifying so I'm planning to begin by purchasing an ETF, but I'm wondering what to do after that - if I should spread out my current funds among some of the blue-chip dividend stocks you've recommended or choosing one to qualify for a DRIP at the current discounts. I get this question all the time: should I focus on one stock to get the DRIP or should I diversify! My advice is to diversify, ESPECIALLY for a beginner! You don't want to put all your eggs in one basket, even if you can qualify for a DRIP with only $2000 let's say, what if that stock stops paying a dividend? Then your DRIP is useless! It is much safer to spread out your investment over multiple stocks and ETFs, that way you reduce your risk. Sure it will take longer to reach the DRIP level but don't worry about that, you will get to that point step by step. I hope that helps! =)

    Could you make a video for younger viewers just starting their first full time careers out of school, wanting to invest and get started but without tons and tons of extra money to invest? I'm looking to start investing, saving for retirement and for a down payment, but have no idea where to start. LOVE the videos. Thank you!

      Hey Julie! I have a WHOLE playlist just for that called the Millennial Investing Guide! In fact, this DRIP video is a part of that playlist so check it out! =)

      The first video is super important: the 4 Steps to Wealth
      Basically BEFORE you start investing you MUST pay off all of your credit card debt and any high interest debt and then build up an emergency savings fund. Only then do you start investing =)

      But I will also be making more student focused videos including how to deal with student loan debt and whether you should invest or pay off debt quicker....

      @@CanadianTShirt awesome! i’m super blessed to not have any credit card or student loan debt, so i’m excited to open my RSP GIC and start putting away for retirement!

      @@itsjuliehoran I wouldn't recommend GICs, especially right now since they are offering awful interest rates of about 1.5% which doesn't even match inflation of 2% so with a GIC, you are locking in your money which you cannot touch and you are basically losing money due to inflation! I'll be making a whole video on GICs so stay tuned for that! =)
