    And here we are in 2016 already and it still feels like that just happened. I remember passing by and seeing it and all the photographers. Glad to her no one got hurt.

    At 5:52, That's actually a pretty shot of footage they took. I love how the train lights are shining in the camera like that. It looks really pretty.

      In other words the engineer admitted he could have done a better job and he was at fault. Only reason for no investigation is when the party involved admits he made a bad decision. Happens.
      First night after the railroad replaced all the type 22 switch stands for manual only in the yard I worked at i ran through one and felt like a jerk. The only reason they did that was somebody in headquarters did a survey and felt they could prevent yard derailments by replacing the type 22 switch stands. Biggest mistake Conrail ever made related to yard operations Within a week 9 switch stands had been run through where if the left the 22's in service these problems wouldn't have happened. We hadn't had a derailment with a 22 switch stand in over 8 years in our yard. Just creates a lot of work unnecessarily. And the railroad spent a lot of money on track that could have been spent replacing ties and tamping instead of screwing around with switch stands to make some headquarters puke look good to his boss. And the night Trainmaster John asked me why I ran through it? I just looked at him and asked him why were the 22's replaced? They worked and we didn't have any problem with them? So why create problems where none were? He just looked at me and finally said " some headquarters puke wanted to look important to his boss, I spent three weeks trying to get the to lift the order as your right it's created lots of trouble until everyone gets used to the fact that the 22's are gone. And did you look at the bulletin orders?
      Yes I did and according to the bulletin orders they weren't supposed to start replacing the 22's until next Monday, this happened on a Friday night a few days before the work was supposed to start replacing the switch stands. The yard and road crews also were unhappy as it meant more work for them.
      Water under the bridge now as that was back in the 80's.

      +Marco S Train signals tell the engineer what speed to travel at. Having more lights and colors allows for more combinations possible. Most railroads in America follow The Northeast Operating Rules Advisory Committee (NORAC). Here is a link to a website that shows NORAC Signal Aspects: rail.pgengler.net/signals/fixed_norac.html

      +Super Trains Thank you, but in the video there are 2 3-coloured lights above each other, not mentioned in the link (or do i miss something?). They can both show green at the same time?The American system is much different compared to the Dutch system.

      +Marco S Even though the signals on the chart don’t look exactly the same as the ones in the video, they still follow the NORAC rules. You have to read the signal as “color” over “color” and compare it to the chart. The top signal can display green yellow and red and the bottom signal also can display green yellow and red but they don’t necessarily perform every combination. For example, theoretically these signals are capable of displaying green over green; however, green over green is not used by these signals. To Show “Clear” these signals display green over red NORAC Rule 281 “Proceed not exceeding Normal Speed.” In the video the signals show for each track red over red, which is NORAC Rule 292 “Stop Signal” which tells the engineer STOP and do not proceed. There wasn’t much standardization years ago so many railroads companies had very different looking signals from one another which are still in use today, which means that chart can be a little confusing.       I believe the top red means red on the main line in the red below means red on a siding , there is a switch just a little further down the track. To answer your question you would never see a green over green

    I seen pretty mangled auto carrier cars with cars inside!!! This one,s going to cost a lot not to mention the railroad equipment etc etc what a shame hopefully no one got hurt😐😐😶☹️🙁🤔🤔🤔...FWM...

      Bad switch. Same one caused another, much less severe derailment about a year later. Then subsequently rebuilt the entire turnout and there's been smooth running since - Altoona native

    I find broad gauge better than standard gauge against derailments.

      American railroads have always been 5' gauge, it just depends on where you measure the gauge. The British started with plateways, where flangeless wheels rolled on angle iron, the gauge being 5' to the *outside* of the track. When they started using flanged wheels, they kept the gauge bars, and the standard rail was 2" wide, 5' - 2" - 2" = 4'8", the standard gauge. All heck broke out when the Pennsylvania cast (!) rail wider than 2", with the North keeping the 4'8" gauge and the South moving to 5' gauge. The Civil War chose the standard, although Lincoln (a railroad lawyer) chose 5' gauge for the Union Pacific. He was overruled.
