    Wow, another great example of the incredible developments over the past couple of years:
    14mm primes with f/2.8 (in 1982 by Canon)
    14-24mm zooms with f/2.8 (2007 by Nikon)
    and now a 14mm f/1.4, which is four times more light than a f/2.8
    Considering the short focal length and maximum aperture it's almost incredible that this lens is somehow affordable. Nikons 13mm f/5.6 cost as much as a new car at that time. Bravo Sigma!

    Thats an amazing lens, really pushing the boundaries of what's possible! One thought about astro though: while it's true that this lens enables the brightest image possible, which is a nice feature for astro photography, i think the single most important tool for astro is a tracker. With a tracker even an f/4 lens can achieve the same image quality, as you can expose nearly as long as you want if you have good polar alignment. Of course doing the same with the 1.4 lens is even better but my point is this: if you have a wide angle lens which is just f2.8, put it on a small tracker and it will outperform every non-tracked shot of the sky. I used to think a very fast wide angle lens is the most important thing for astro photography but actually it's a tracker 🙈😅

    Thank you for another good review. That horrible focus breathing warping makes me curious how software handles focus stacking the images. Even at 14mm f/16 landscape photographers will want to focus stack now and then. Anyway the size and weight and the fact that I hate big filter holders (yes I have a couple that I NEVER use) make this lens a no go for me. It is not worth it for couple of starscapes per year.

    You didn't mention this, but you did show it: at closer distance, when bokeh is more pronounced at bigger apertures, the focus breathing dimishes considerably. When it comes to Sigma (or any other brand, for that matter) describing it as ideal for astrophotography, I can't help myself think that it simply means "our sharpest lens," because it means making sure such tiny points of light, the stars, won't appear blurred.

    Just compared your previous tests of Sony 14 GM and Sigma 14-24 Art, I can only say that the sharpness of this lens doesn't justify its huge size and weight at all. Better use the Sony GM or the zoom brother of Sigma than this lens.

    • @opalyankaBG
      @opalyankaBG ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The f/1.4 aperture does justify its size though.
      By the way, do keep in mind that testing UWA lenses using test charts is less than ideal as it requires the tester to move very close to the chart thus compromising the results. Very few lenses perform as well at close focus distance as they do for longer focus distances. And knowing that the lens is optimized for astrophotography, bets are that it's performing best near infinity.

    • @chanjeff4406
      @chanjeff4406 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@opalyankaBG I checked Gordon Laing's video of both lenses. At infinity focus, the Sony GM is actually sharper wide open and at f2.8 than Sigma. Both lenses don't have coma at widest aperture. Maybe Sigma has the advantage for that extra 2/3 stop if one is shooting for time lapse, but for me the price, size, weight outweighs that benefit, especially when you can choose a smaller lens and choose stacking to obtain better results.

    i dont like very much the sharpness at 1.4, it has also a lot of color ftinging and saw it very soft even at the center as seen in the camera clock shot. i have a 1.2 nikon lens and its superb, sharp and contrasty wide open.

    Viltrox: i just created a revolutionary lens!
    Sigma: Hold my beer.

      viltrox IMO is still better. it has no dstortion and focus breathin and is a 3rd the price. you lose all focal length benefit with this much distortion :s

      @Caleb Cudjoe Yeah, I'd say the Viltrox looks the same wide open in the corners. The Sigma performs better with CA. I wonder how the weathersealing performs on the Viltrox.🤔

    Canon is doing a disservice to us _its users_ by not allowing Sigma to make lenses for the RF mount.

    I think if you would make a gofundme (crowdfunding) thing. People will let you get this lens very quickly. It's the way how I got my camera of the same price tag.
    Patreon does work well, TH-cam is oke.
