Great chat! I'm also at the point where I need to cull less-used paints to keep the really useful ones within an arm's reach of my painting desk. Your logic was solid throughout! Agreed that the largest holes in the fanatic line are darker colors- most of the "triads" seem to be missing 1-2 colors closer to black.
Brent!! Hey! Yeah, I think we all collect far too much paint and vast chunks of them never get used. Sometime I think I’m more addicted to collecting pint, than models and games! And we all have favourites that keep coming out time and again. Even when we want to try something else. It’s a shame about the darker colours as calling it “the complete set” kind of paints them into a corner. You can hardly create additional darker paints AFTER making a ‘complete’ set. 🤣
Totally agree the fanatic range is really missing dark colours. I'm looking for holes to fill them. Pro acryl has some great dark red browns that fit my needs which is my personal biggest gap. I think AK 3rd gen is a great option but I just have no local store that sells it unfortunately - and shipping in Canada is extremely expensive. 15 bucks minimum, so it makes like no financial sense to buy one bottle online and ship it.
Man, this channel is fast becoming my favorite hobby channel. We've spoken before, but I'll say it again - you have that "I'm on this journey with you" thing that I look for in an instructor.
Solid gold!! this video is solid gold. Insightful, honest, funny, and very helpful to people with all different levels of experience (while being unique). You rock!!
You hit the nail on the head with GW paints. I had Citadel paints back in the 90's and then jumped back into the hobby in about 2015. I'v almost exclusively used GW paints since then with an occasional Vallejo or Pro Acryl paint thrown in. I've never liked the pots and have had a ton of paints dry out and have spilled a bunch of washes and contrast paints over the years and this has been highlighted ad nauseum on by hobbyists. I'm dumfounded why GW has never simply gone to dropper bottles. What I've never heard any content creators bring up is the way they pigeon hole painters into using their paints how THEY think WE should use them. Intentionally making certain paints thicker and other paints thinner for base painting just sucks, and then they create their own Dry paint line with paints that are so dry that they are guaranteed a short shelf life in their terrible pots. All acrylic paints can obviously be used for dry brushing or layering or base coating or highlights. It's all about the technique you employee. For some of the reasons you mentioned, but mostly because of the pots I've made the switch to Army Painter Fanatic paints as well. The Complete Set arrived at my house today and I'm excited to get started with them. Great content. Liked and subscribed btw.
Thank you! You know I think GW got stuck. I’m sure they had conversations about dropper bottles but with so many pots still out in the world on shelves in hobby stores they’d lose millions if they switched to droppers now. Simply because no one would buy a pot as soon as they announced it. They’d be left recalling trillions of unsold pots. 🤣
@@thestateofplay2023 When they made Primaris marines they knew they were going to slowly phase out mini marines as their sales were certainly going to wane. They should’ve gone with the same approach with paints. 20+ years of buying their paints for me and now likely never again. I’m excited to get to work with the new Army Painter range.
There are 3 key reasons they keep the pots. They look iconic and stand apart from the competition, they waste paint so you have to buy more paint, they are of middling quality but newbies will buy anyway. Apart from the contrast range I think they are terrible. I use AK and they are fantastic, but Vellejo is pretty good and I hear many good things about Pro Acryl. I hear Vellejo model color is getting a refresh very soon.
@@blakearius Pro Acryl has some of the greatest paints in some specific colors (I love their black and especially their white as well as their metallics) but I don’t rate the range as a whole. Too many gaps in the color range that require lots of mixing. Im ALL in on the new Army Painter Fanatics. Just tried them out and they are amazing. Very consistent quality throughout the range.
I just got the entire fanatic and speedpaint 2.0 sets and finally feel like I have paints that I like and are comfortable to use. I loved Pro Acryl but I don’t like how thin they are out of the bottle. I like to thin the paint down to my own preferences.
Glad there's people like us! I paint a variety of stuff from board game minis, 40k, terrain, and random 3D prints I think are cool so I found I was just always going to the damn store to buy a few random colours of stuff. Especially for this 100+ mini board game I was trying to slap chop through. Would have been way more economical to just buy the whole speed paint 2.0 set than run to the store twice a week buying a few pots here and there. I learned my lessons with the Fanatic line and just bought the complete. Having a good time so far. I get like if all you wanted to do was paint a blood angel army you're just going to need just a large amount of a few specific colours but that ain't how I roll. I love having tons of options just ready at hand. And I if I'm army painting I want my notes to say "Highlight with imp yellow" not "for highlights I mixed 1 drop of pro acryl yellow, 1 drop of AK 3rd gen ivory, and thin with some Lahmian Medium". Screw that. Painting one off models, sure i'll mix away since nothing needs to be repeated uniformly after its done.
Well you’ve just described how I paint. Why mix when a dropper has the colour. And if I do mix I want use one drop of each colour to get an in between colour. So much easier to remember
Fantastic video. I am also firmly in the AP camp with Speedpaint 2.0 and Fanatic complete sets but have kept my Pro Acryl and Kimera on hand for when I need them. You've introduced me here to a few other interesting paints I want to try in the future so thanks for that! Great job, keep up the awesome content.
You’re welcome. All paints have a benefit. It’s not always obvious and it’s not always how they were meant to be used. Instant colours are great glazes!
23:07 I completely agree on this. the Vallejo model color black gray is a color I absolutely love. It falls right in between dark gray and pure black, it's almost like a coal color. When you want something very dark but not quite full black.
I got the full Fanatic set for much the same reasons. Haven't had time to dive in and use them as much as I want to yet, but my limited usage has been great so far. Agreed on the small size of the medium bottle, I asked AP about it and their reply was that individual sales on the Warpaints Stabilizer will start on April 20.
Great video. Don’t know if I could ever go all in on a full paint range like that, but your reasons are solid. Seeing what’s in and what goes out was what made the video for me.
18:27 I was looking into that brand because big amount modernate price... But man is the gorche just perfect as only get primary and secoundary colors then mix them and $8 a oz is really good like as good a Tamiya! So yeah thanks for discussing al the paints!
This is a fantastic overview video, im in the same boat as everyone else, full line of citadel, contrasts, p3, pro acryl, speed paints, instant colours, turbo dork. And the idea of one purchase box set and i have everythjng and a wonderful guide of triads are making me want to try army painter just to stop the hour long head ache of "which red"...just give me the red next in line so i can continue with the millions of zombicide minis i got from this damn kickstarter.
🤣 oh man, I know the feeling! Luckily all my Zombicide minis are done, thank god. But yeah, having the next in line saves so much time. Plus the consistency being the same means no more thinning every paint in a totally different way.
Really interesting and very personal take on what to keep. I love Dirty Down and Scalecolor, but that's because they fit how *I* paint. Which is sort of your point. Great video.
I’m so glad you got the point. Many on here often rant at me because my opinion was not their opinion. Paints are very personal to each person as is much of this hobby really.😜
Great to see you back. I was beginning to wonder if you'd thrown You Tube in the bin. So if I have got this right, you have bought all the new Army Painter paints, with the best intentions of of saving space and vastly thinning out all your other makes of paints, by throwing about half a dozen bottles in the bin and keeping all the rest.
When you put it that way… I’ve saved no space at all. Just tidied up. 🤣 And they’re not in the bin because I’m willing to bet many make their way back out when I get lazy and remember a recipe I liked. 😜👍🏼
"Plastic crack" is a term oft used to describe our addiction to adding onto our piles (stacks, collections, elephants) of shame. I've started to refer to hobby paints as "Acrylic Heroin" (Enamel-phetamine is also under consideration). Because just like with the plastic side of the hobby, I find myself constantly grabbing new and shiny paints to (maybe) give a try. Having some idea of what I could use them with. Yet ultimately they end up in a box, bag, or their own pile subjected to brownian motion.
@thestateofplay2023 My latest acquistions!! Villainy inks! From the Grimdark compendium. I also, for whatever reason picked up a bottle of Newsh, and am actively debating just burying it all further with the whole fanatics box also!
Ah yes i want those villainy inks too. But they aren’t available here until end of the month. I do worry watching grimdark compendium that they’ll congeal at the bottom of those droppers though.
@@thestateofplay2023 A very valid concern. IDK if putting agitators into the bottles will help and/or using a vortex mixer to help keep the paint from that fate.
Good to have you back and congrats on the anniversary. Whats the next painting project for the new range? Ive set myself the goal of finishing one miniture a week in 2024 mainly to make me finish my 80% done black templars and start downsizing the pile of shame.
great video as i am just sorting my spare room out as i am about to start making models again after 30 + years and i keep looking at these paints to buy
16:17 here you said proacryl is great fro drybrushing but online I’ve heard the opposite that its not great because its so matt and also its more liquidy which has made me hesitant to invest in them since I dry brush a lot. Can you do a video going over how you dry brush proacryl paints
Hey. Yeah I’m not sure why a paint being Matt or liquidy would have any bearing on drybrushing. As you literally wipe most paint off a brush leaving only damp pigments (essentially) then the more pigment a paint has, the better for drybrushing. It lasts longer on a brush. Luke at Geek Gaming scenics did a video describing drybrushing with pro acryl a long while ago. It’s worth a watch.
I wonder what some kind of paint-designers are smoking by inventing silly names for paints. Very nice to have you back on YT. Have to admit that are only a few content creators that are able to keep me at a video that is longer than 15 minutes. Very entertaining, useful and funny...like always. Interesting to see what your opinions are about all these paints. Thanks to YT I'm quitting the Citadel range more and more. My favs are now VMC but I tried AP sppedpaints recently and I'm happy, especially on all this The Old World stuff. Never had to paint so many minis in such a short time.
@@thestateofplay2023 This is the curse - finally far enough in life I can afford all the models I dreamed of as a kid but have no time to paint anything lol
The silly names are there because they can be trademarked. You can’t trademark a sensible descriptive name like yellow ochre or cobalt blue because it’s been in use for centuries. To my mind it’s a shot in the foot because I’m not going to buy a paint online when I have no idea from the name what colour it represents. 😂 (Colours in real life are rarely what you see on a computer screen.)
@@sirrathersplendid4825 Yes totally. I guess it also works for GW tutorials to reference a colour but still not sure why other brands copied even with trademarks. Painting would be so much easier if they were called dark red, red, mid red and light red. Then you'd know exactly what colour to use, when. 😄
Grats on the anniversary! It's been great for me as I'm getting back into the hobby to see alllllll the paint there is now compared to 25 years ago lol. Been enjoying slap chopping (love pro acryl for this) and then speed painting things. It's been fun testing out other paints for highlighting and learning stuff as I grow my paint arsenal. Haven't tried Vallejo metals yet, but they're on my list to get, although I've found the speed paints metals great to use, especially with some speedpaint medium added (finally picked up a few of the Pro Acryl Bronzes to try out recently). I've rambled. Thanks for the video and thanks for the not lego drybrush pad idea from your other video. Works like a charm :)
@@thestateofplay2023 Sidenote, I'm not too surprised about the fanatic black. Their rattle can black primer is glossy :(. But their black speedpaint is great! But their various "white" speedpaints feel like just a bunch of greys. I want try more of citadels contrast paints for that reason. I also want to try GSWs Darth Black paint, not to mention their speedpaints in general are something I'm interested in, but I order their stuff in batches because of the shipping cost >_>
That was a nice surprise. A thoughtful overview of the strengths and weaknesses in some of the popular ranges. I was more interested in what was staying and why 👍.
Well if you’re interested in that then I’ve also kept all my enamel washes and oils, my Tamiya weathering masters and a bunch of very dark pro acryl. I didn’t mention these because they aren’t a direct comparison to army painter. 👍🏼
@@thestateofplay2023 Thanks for the bonus, you are, as ever, an absolute star! I've been playing with your ink mixing guide lately. Only with Golden Fluid Acrylics. I don't know that it's made me a better painter, but it's made me more confident with colours. This is from a guy who wears a lot of black, because I didn't know how to "do" colours.
How do you think for someone starting the hobby - is mega set that contains 50 paints plus all the indispensable colors from citadel range listed like rakarth flesh, together with pro acryl metallics and maybe some technical paints like tesseract glow etc is a good foundation? I fear that for this price tag I might not get enough yellows and oranges, also skin tone paints are limited in the mega set. It’s hard to drop 700 euro on a hobby as a starter for beginner, and judging by the price per bottle even if they start selling only 100 paints tones in a separate box that still would be 450+ euros = Tough to swallow. P.s. forgot to mention that I got armypainter speed paint 1.0 and could use it as washes. While it was good to start its issues were too rough for beginner in the hobby.
Oh man, that’s a minefield of a question. To be totally honest if you’re just starting I’d say buy only the paints you need for the models you’re painting. And spend time learning to thin, layer, glaze, wash and mix. Those skill are much more useful than 100 paints.
I've heard really good things about the Fanatic metallics. Interesting to hear your take on it. Can't wait to get my hands on them. I don't think I'll splurge on the full set, but rather wait for the singles to come out and make my own little box.
The metallics are good but as I said thinning metallics is always a pain. It either ends up not thinned enough and leaves brush marks or it’s too thinned and …so many coats. 🤣🤣
Like you I started out with Humbrol and to this day still have some of them. Then tried out Citadel butt then along came Vallejo and I never associated paint with any other brand, as I love them and they do precisley what they state. So why change?
Boy the Humbrol were terrible weren’t they. Smelled to high heaven and opened like house emulsion! Weirdly I had the opposite experience with Vallejo. I wanted to love them veci can get them around the corner but the few I used would cover. Mainly purples for genestealers. We’ll see how I go.
I’ve recently moved to Vallejo from citadel and I’m loving it. I thought about fanatics but army painter won’t send the full set to my part of the world so it’s going to be a long time before I can get my hands on them and no local stores supply them. Liquitex inks are great
I think every paint works differently for different people and most decision are made based on what’s easily available to you. I had to get Vallejo shipped whereas army painter are in my LGS.
Just happened across this video in my feed as I bought the Army Painter air paint line. I've used a lot of Vallejo Air paints over the years, but got sick of grabbing new colours every project. This was fine when I first started painting, but now that I am numb to the financial pain, I just want a complete set. I don't want to be making 123432432 trips to the LGS. It would be nice to see more companies follow suit with full or at least partial or specifically aimed sets. But for now, Army Painter is doing it well and doing it affordably as well. I've got a citadel chest full of half dried out paints from when I first started. I think those are next to be replaced. Great channel, keep it up.
Thanks man. I know what you mean, sometimes a big box that ticks all your boxes is the way to go. I once made 3 trips to the LGS in one day because I kept forgetting colours!
Could someone please identify the elevated habitat pod thingys at 21:44? I love the look of those, I’ve got a few diorama ideas spinning around my head…
Boom! Amazing. But remember, any paint is only as good as the user. And remember to shake the metallics before use like they were on a 1980s dance floor!!!
Very interesting video. I do feel like you had an underlying meehh on some of the things you keep, and it would have been fun to here what you will rebuy and what is just there until your supply runs out
Yeah I think you’re right. Some things like metal color will definitely be bought again. But things like darker colours I reckon I could easily exchange for other brands. I’m not really wedded to any brand really. Just want things that work the way I need them too.
im kinda over my collection of vallejo, im thinking of replacing them with the fanatic range and some pro acryl, i have the speedpaint range and i love it
Hey! Look who's back! nice to see you again! Great paint's puck! I'm a bit scared to buy such a big sets, but good that they're doing great products and thanks for your opinion
🤣🤣 I have Dutch friends who’ve said that to me too! I kinda think this hobby needs a few honest truths. There’s so much crap info that gets parroted and repeated and half it isn’t true at all. “Black base rims frame your model…” if that were true all art galleries would have blame frames.
Love the content being a new person to warhammer community. Based on your reviews diving into air brush and is it worth just snagging the army painter air and still getting some of the citadel pots for colors? Playing ultra marines so wasn’t sure how close army painter comes to maccragge blue.
Honestly I don’t know as i play imperial fists. I guess it depends how perfectly accurate you want to be. Do bare in mind that maccragge blue is the base coat. Once you’ve added all the highlights it’s not maccragge blue anymore. 👍🏼😜
Agreed with your comment about dirty down, even shaking the hell out of it to get ball bearing out the sludge of the bottom is awful and then when you final get the sludge to mix back into the medium it still behaves terrible. 100% agree ak rust effects (as well as other effects) must better.
I'm doing the same, but going all AK. Vastly prefer their paints (and their colour range). I don't use contrast paints much at all, so my entire collection is essentially Vallejo and AK. Only AP stuff I use is their dips, washes, and tufts.
AK was my second choice and only got pipped because I can get AP down the road. I do like Vallejo but had some issues with coverage a few times so moved away from them.
Nice video, interesting to see how much you kept of other ranges. I think it is good to have a core set for most of the work with add-ons for the rest. I still use citadel as the core, with scale 75 for skin, gold and matt finish fabrics, vallejo metal color for silver, with model color black, ak interactive white set for, well, white, with a combo of citadel and army painter for washes/contrasts, and monument sets that I don't use enough (though I am looking forward to getting the fluorescents set soon)
Interesting to see your recommendations for metals and white. I use Vallejo as my core, but have problems with their Ivory, which I use as my standard white even though it’s hard to thin, and have yet to find metallics that flow well enough to paint small details like buckles and cap badges.
@@sirrathersplendid4825 For white and ivory I'd go Pro Acryl. And for metals Id go Vallejo Metal colour OR AP Speedpaints. I'm quite lazy when it comes to painting so I tend to waste loads of time trying to find paints that just 'do it in one'. Why two thin coats when one thin coat will do! haha
A tip after hearing your mention of using all the light Tamiyas for zenithals- All of the Pastels in the speedpaint range also work great unthinned for zenithals. I especially love spraying Speedpaint Princess Pink over Molotow Dark Violet as a base.
I know you said you were making space, but you owe it to yourself to try Kimera's black. I have a similarly ridiculous number of "black" paints and Kimera's is just an order of magnitude better for opacity, mattness, etc.
Trying to limit the number of paints I own, but I’m still looking for a decent off-white that flows well (Vallejo Ivory is great, but too thick). Need some gunmetal to replace Citadel Lead Belcher which is just too goopy, and I’d quite like a brass colour that is thin enough to paint tiny details like buckles and cap-badges.
Try adding a tiny bit of flow improver to the ivory. Tiny though. Vallejo metal colour steel or dark aluminium maybe what you need. And for brass try some of the bronze speedpaints.
@@thestateofplay2023 so far all the speedpaints i have fit the name to color fairly well (except desolate brown lol) but i dont doubt that one bit. They love their weird names lol
Honestly I’m not sure. Hard probably yes, and soft I’ve never seen anyone use other than for fine art. I mean, you can use any paint on minis really - it’s just paint. The problem comes from price. Art paints are costed based on pigments so are often much much more costly so it isn’t very cost effective.
I'm with you on the blacks, but I went a step further; I junked all of my Vallejo blacks apart from the basic flat black and then use inks to build up to whatever shade I want. Is it an extra step? Yup, but you're working with black so you're not going to be spending ages getting the desired shade you want. The pigment density of the inks helps a lot too.
I agree with most of what you've said, I've been thinking of dumping most of my citadel paints not because they're bad but just because I want to try more painting styles. I can't get rid of most of my vallejo game air paints though. Unfortunately I don't feel like AP is as vibrant as some VGC, Daemonic yellow while nice is nothing like gold yellow. That being said, just be careful if you use warpaint air white, it rubbed off when used as a zenithal
AP is not as vibrant, you’re right. But that kinda suits my style. Unless I’m painting superman, I prefer desaturated. Look at Middle Earth minis. Gandalf isn’t wearing a vibrant hat! 🤣🤣
Touche! I am still going to be making the change to fanatics later in the year anyway, the triad system has won me over as i'm not an artist i just want someone to hold my hands as im painting.@@thestateofplay2023
@@thestateofplay2023 Touche! I agree though it really just will depend on what i'm going to be painting, I imagine though I will be picking up the megaset just so I can experiment with it as I have done with speedpaints 2.0 and warpaints air.
Yep. 80% of this hobby is experimenting. The other 20% is finding storage space for minis you’re “going to paint” sometime, maybe, in the future, maybe. 🤣
@@thestateofplay2023 Hey mate, actually you might know the answer but would AK acrylic thinner be a substitute to the Fanatics Stabiliser? Or are the properties different.
Ive been slowly switching over to Army Painter over the past few years with a few colors from pro acryl here and there. I dont buy sets because i never end up using all the paints so i just buy a new color when i need it
Yeah I think it makes sense. If you haven’t tried fanatic, grab one or two when they do singles on April 20th. Even if just to compare with what you have now.
I bought the full set as well. I already had a full set of the Speedpaints 2.0, and a full set of the AP Air ranges, as well as a full Pro Acryl set and the Scale 75 Fantasy and Games set. Ended up tossing a bunch of Reaper, Cidatel, OG AP Warpaints, GSW and other stray paints in a big box and shipping them off to a fried that just started the hobby. I would have loved to try the new Vallejo lines, but they are extremely hard to find here, either locally or online. As far as the Black to Deep Grey jump, I agree that there should have been something in between, however, I found that putting the dark tone wash over it helped a lot.
Is this video about Army paint or all the other paints? Considering I heard nothing about the Army paint and only about the other paints you are keeping with your paints (which total more total paint I would consider keeping as a primary set) what is this video about?
I can’t as the water in my area is filled with limescale. And x20a and distilled water is the same price. I did find you can thin way way further with the x20a though. Like 10:1 and it still works.
@@thestateofplay2023 Ah that' makes since and to be honest I have X20 thinner and even medum but have not tried it yet. And was having an issue with 3mm scale tanks of Tamiya going from too thick and covering the details to to thin and being a wash. But yeah it sounds like just water is causing that cliff in thickness... So I'll try it but for me in my humid 60F-80F degree room things work differently like all glues take forever and a day to dry so maybe that is causing it too... But yeah thanks for including Tamiya flat paints! Honestly my favoites so far and I've tried a few brands now.
Man I totally agree with you that the Citadel line just got weird between base, layer, shade, dry, technical, and contrast. I got back into 40k from over a decade absence and I was so confused at the citadel line coming back. IMO they really just need to bring it back to effectively a "normal" acrylic paint, washes, and contrast paints, and effects are fine too I guess. As an aside the price of those "paints" made for basing is absolutely insane. In Canada the normal price for a pot of say Astrogranite is $9.40 and is 24mls. But you can just get some Vallejo ground texture, which is 200ml for $16 CAD. I could probably base like a thousand 28mm bases with that stuff. GW was always expensive but it's at the point here where the competition is almost half the price per ml and is even better quality for the most part.
Yes, GW are pricing themselves out of the market on multiple fronts. And their refusal to “get with program” doesn’t help. They don’t even make a wet palette. I mean why on earth not. Well probably because it would cost $100. 🤣
@@thestateofplay2023 lol very true. Citadel sells their hobby drill for $40 bucks here. I can get an entry level Dremel for $50 bucks. Army Painter's drill is like $10 - $12.
@@thestateofplay2023- Why would anyone actually want to buy a wet palette? You can make one for next to nothing with a cheap Tupperware box (mine cost 50p), a sheet of baking parchment and a sheet of kitchen roll.
@@sirrathersplendid4825 I think you underestimate the power of laziness. Why buy cakes when you can bake one at home. Why have a car when you can walk. Why have sex when you have two hands. 🤣
Love your blend of technical brawn with extreme pragmatism. You've had a strong influence on my initial paint purchases. Just ordered the CYMK Liquitex Inks plus the three metals and the Liquitex Gel Matte Medium. Recently bought a smattering of good Vallejos (Verdigris, Sand Yellow, Khaki and Nuclear Yellow Xpress, and two metals - Liquid Copper and Gunmetal Grey, they didn't have Aluminum or Silver). I am waiting for the local store that carries proacryl to get Titanium White and the Glaze and Wash Medium, and will then buy CYMK and Fluorescents from an affordable local brand (Politec, their Hobby line comes in 60ml bottles), plus a bunch of dropper bottles from Amazon. My only Citadel purchase has been Contrast Black Legion. Also, had already gotten from Squidmar the recipe for the home made wet pallet, but from your influence also just got ice cube trays!
🤣🤣 man that’s a lot of stuff! I would say grab Contrast Black Templar too. Legion is browny black and Templar is bluey black.👍🏼 just gives you options. Especially for boots
@@thestateofplay2023 It DOES sound like a lot of stuff, but that's what 27 bottles? If the Vallejo USA kit (which a lot of people look at as a starter kit) is 16 bottles, After I get primer I reckon it's like a starting with about a little under two starter kits, and I should be covered for almost anything. I got the Liquitex products on sale (30%-ish off from MSRP here).
That was a very informative amd briliant video .... your insights into the paints was educational ... THANKYOU.. i have avoided Army painter for years ... BUT i might now have a go... Thankyou .. ;-) i have not been to this channel before.. but i will be back ...
I know what you mean. I tried TWO original Army painter warpaints - hated them and avoided them for years. But fanatic and speedpaint are completely different beasts.
I had been sticking with Reaper for a while but tended to overwork the paint due to impatience. So I jumped on the full Fanatic set based on the coverage claims and I think they're absolutely stellar paints, I definitely fuss with it less because it just covers great. I also grabbed some of the really dark colors from the Pro Acryl line since Fanatic leans bright. But I will say Reaper is still really good for layering, sometimes the coverage of Fanatic and Pro Acryl is actually too good, or I'm still sub-par at thinning paints, I'll have to try some mediums other than water.
You’re right. I stopped using water when I loved house. Now it’s more limescale than water and kills my thinning. 🤣 Funny, now we’re moaning about paints covering TOO well. We can’t win. 🤣
@@thestateofplay2023 I ended up trying some Tamiya X20-A thinner, and it works like a charm. Just a little bit worked into a drop of paint really gets it flowing off the brush much better than water.
Vallejo thinning medium is awesome to actually thin the paint. If you need to reduce the viscosity of the paint (i.e. if it's a chunk monkey pot), use the airbrush flow improver. :)
HEY, im new to model painting and was wondering how well the army paints go through an air brush?..... being my first paint set because of the rang of colours and tri colours. ...or do i save the headach and just go for airbrush paints???
I treated myself to the full new Vallejo GameColor acrylics range last year and like it quite a bit by and large. I also do have their ExpressPaints range, but because it's a bit limited I got the AP SpeedPaints 2.0 range this year. I'm actually quite impressed with them. The old Warpaints were my very first miniature paints and I (understandably, I think) haven't touched AP since until I got the SpeedPaints. I'm mostly using Vallejo and ProAcryl these days but with how many positive things I hear about the AP Fanatics range, I'm very tempted to get a box after all. It's not like I need new paint, but I also really love getting new paint. Real conundrum, that.
Hey we all get addicted to both paint and models. Not weird at all. We all suffer. I’d recommend picking up one or two AP fanatic colours so you can judge. 👍🏼
Do you have (or did you make) a video about the paint-rack? The ones you put the new Fanatics in…. I want it too… And yeah… the typo on the box.. first thing I saw when the box came out. 😂
I didn’t actually. Those paint racks are nail polish racks from Amazon. They fit 8 citadel and 12 droppers in a row. Because why not steal even more stuff from the make-up section!
Great rundown. I too am changing out my Citadel for AK gen 3, local shop supplies and prefer the more real world colours. However, Scale 75 Metal n Alchemy range. More specifically the Golds (they sell a box) wow, game changer. Is for Golds what Model Air is for Silver, or titanium white is for err white. Highly recommend giving a box a try. Bought for my Thousand Sons and I'm actually enjoying painting trim. Would love to hear your thoughts. Glad your better and look forward to next video. Ideally about S75 Gold 😂
Hmm, I’ve got all the SC75 metallics but maybe it’s me but I couldn’t get along with them. I love Necro and Viking gold but there’s others weren’t as good as Vallejo metal colour.
@thestateofplay2023 really? Using Decayed Metal as a base, Viking on top. Yet to do final highlight but will try elven kr a mix of the ivory and something see how it ends. Oh also with Dirty Down, rather than going from pot to model I used the wet pallet and watered it down their for best effect. But layers is definitely the way. Although I agree it's not this magic in a bottle it's made out to be.
You’re right. Nothing is magic in a bottle. Except maybe a nice 30 year old malt whiskey. You can’t paint with it but after finishing the bottle - no one cares about a pile of shame! 😜
There must be something wrong with the bottle of Titanium White I got. Everyone says it's great but for me the coverage is bad, it's chalky to the point it can even crackle when it dries and I literally went straight back to White Scar as an improvement. For the life of me I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong, but nothing from ProAcryl has impressed me.
That sounds like a dodgy bottle to me. I’m a fan of some of their colors but not all. And honestly it’s mostly the really dark colours. Their lighter hues aren’t that great tbh. But your white should be performing better than that. Hmm. 🤔
Get yourself a Vortex Mixer - FOUR E's Scientific and you will love Dirty Down Rust. Btw its not that hard to work with it, I just wish we could clearcoat it. I often like to make little dents or holes and add stirland muss, coat it with colors like orange, yellow, brown and silver and paint some dirty down rust over it. sometimes I drybrush with some silver over it but just very gently. I have to agree if you want a fully rusty model its hard to handle. I think its good for small details/ parts.
I’m right there with you with Rakarth Flesh. I have been on the hunt to find its equivalent from AK to army painter, to Vallejo and Scale 75. Nope. Cant do it.
Vince V is a fanatic for the Vallejo Metals paints but he is grieved by their lack of gold. He had a mad big alchemist recipe for gold until Greenstuff World dropped their Pure Gold Pigment. Mix it (hydrate it( with Vallejo Metals Varnish and you have the shiniest gold paint known to humanity. There is a pure and an antique version. The mix takes a drop of ink too. Downside, no silvers. So Vallejo retains a use there. But several other coppery and bronzy colours in the pigment range.
Yes, I did Vinces recipe but you can’t store it. For some reason the gold pigment causes a plastic dropper to implode. It literally dries out from the inside out. Probably why GSW killed off the pigment. 🤣
Liquitex Inks and Golden High Flow are my main paints, as well as a couple of Vallejo I got when I first started painting. Buying art supply ink and paint when its on sale is still cheaper per oz than buying mini paint.
@@thestateofplay2023 Plus, most of the higher quality artist paint is priced based on pigmentation, so colours really may not be any more expensive if it's not a colour you need/want. Knowing exactly what pigments are in the paint also makes colour mixing a bit more straight forward, at least compared to the fantasy/sci-fi paint names, as you discussed.
Let’s see. I thought they were a great idea but single pigment colours can be terrible for coverage. Some pigments are naturally transparent so will never get full coverage no matter how many layers. Red and white. Great! Pthalo or yellows, not so much. As incredibly thick paints they need thinned almost perfectly. They need to be mixed for coverage and mix very very well. But… they keep coming out in phases. Are quite expensive and are no better than artist grade acrylics. Honestly I personally think people would be better off with liquitex, daler-rowney, or winsor & newton as they’re easier to get your hands on in any art store. 👍🏼
@thestateofplay2023 thanks for your feedback. I invested a lot in these and I like them for the most part but I wish I had heard this take before I did as there isn't a lot of criticism beyond "they need mixing". It is tough when you buy into a painting set. I feel a bit of sunk cost with a lot of paints I buy where I feel like I have to use them even if the paint itself is quite bad then just end up having a bad experience trying to get them to work for me.
Man we all feel like that. I keep side eyeing the Ak range but I can’t get them locally. It’s like cheating on a new girlfriend before the second date. 🤣🤣
Hello there !!! Have you tried to convert inks into contrast paints? I´ve seen some stuff on youtube doing it mixing inks with medium at 50% and a bit of flow improver
Yes, but getting the ratio correct is difficult. It’s exactly the ingredients you describe but you need to mix them exactly right. After all that trying it’s cheaper to buy Speedpaint medium and mix inks.
Interesting question. I’d probably do it by starting with the mid colour and adding the complimentary to darken it then adding white to lighten it. Which judging by the amount of white pigment in fanatic paints seems to be how they’ve done it. Having said this you could also do it by taking the colour you want on the chart and adding more or less drops of the mix to each side.
I'm the same except I am buying full ak range. Ak is just the best for me, I am absolutely in love. BTW doesnt Two Thin Coats do a Rakkarth Flesh equivalent?
Can I add a follow up question to your acrylic ink video? I actually went out and purchased liquitex inks solely because of that video. What is the best acrylic medium you've found to try and approximate acrylic paints? Love your videos, extremely helpful for the noobs like me :)
Matt medium works to a point but inks and paints are very different. I use inks for thin transparent application over zenithals. Making washes and contrast type paints really. Something like a gel medium or gesso (something thicker) would likely work but I haven’t tried. You can just paint directly with the inks. Then just deal with varnish. 👍🏼
I have to admit that I have recently come to enjoy the Vallejo metal color Air gold quite a bit, I just dont always want that extremely antique looking red-gold colour, sometimes I really enjoy the lighter "white-gold" style the VMCA.
I love that I can buy all paints with one go from Army Painter, but I really can't, because they are so expensive. I think Pro Acryl is better in that case, because I can buy box after box and finally get all of them. With Army painter all bigger boxes contains paints from smaller ones. The same problem with Vallejo.
Hi, I'm also in the AP camp with Fanatic+Speedpaints combo. What I've noticed: 1. Fanatics have great coverage. I mean, really great. But it came with a price. They are even so slightly desaturated and what I think is there is a bit of white/black pigment in every colour to increase opacity. 90% of the time it's still ok, the other 10% is when I have to glaze with speedpaints to increase saturation (Speedpaints are very vivid paints). 2. Some colour hexades seem too narrow, like not going dark enough, and at the same time the difference between - for example - two grayish whites is to small to justify two separate bottles. 3. Yeah, the lack of off-black - it is surprising though, because there were two nice offblack colours in original Warpaints range (Necromancer's cloak and Hardened Carapace). 4. Why AP included only red and green in metallic colours and got rid of other colours (with my beloved Night Scales)? I'm baffled. Either keep the full OG range or get rid of that entirely (and release as expansion). Metallics also lack dark steely paint. And still I think the speedpaint metallics are superior. Somehow even zenithal priming comes through metallic speedpaints (some foul magic, I guess).
Yes I agree with everything here. And yeah I think calling the big box “the complete set” seems weird because what if they create extra paints? Then it was never ‘complete”? 🤣
They do but it’s only 63 colours. Then there’s a fantasy and games set, and quite a number of other different sets. So not really a complete range in one big box. 👍🏼
Bro. I love your channel! Its been a xear already? Granted, I wasnt here from the beginning, bit I'll stay for the ride! I agree with so so kany points. Especially the blacks and whites. I havent had a single fanatic paint yet. I mix with ak 3rd gen, two thin coata and pro avryl atm. With the occasio al citadel paint. Whoever disagrees on the metalics is a lunatic :)
Yeah, a whole year on TH-cam. I’d love to say I’m the new Mr. Beast but I’m a couple of multimillions of subs short 🤣🤣. I guess I’m trying to restrict myself to ‘limited’ paint ranges because it’s to easy to go colour crazy in this hobby!
Hi. I've been out of the hobby since the original Epic 40k. I say that to illustrate how out-of-touch I am with _The State of Play!_ and how much I'm appreciating your video's in playing a little catch-up. Cheers from Tassie.
I tried them out at a few conventions and was quite impressed. They’re like citadel but better. The white still isn’t great or the yellow but the metallics are good. In the end the only reasons for not getting them were smaller range (at the time), and easy availability.
Yeah I kept the pro acryl black green, blue black and black brown too.
We love the feedback and the video - happy to be on your shelf! When you make room for an air range let us know and we’ll help you out :)
😂 Thank you indeed. And great paints! I wish I had room for more paint. You can never have enough eh?!
Congrats on the anniversary and your unique perspective on the hobby is really appreciated. Here’s to many more episodes!
I really appreciate that. Thanks!
Man, this channel is fast becoming my favorite hobby channel. We've spoken before, but I'll say it again - you have that "I'm on this journey with you" thing that I look for in an instructor.
Thanks. I guess I’ve been on this journey since 1985, so it probably more like, “I’ve heard all the crap, now let’s tell the truth”. 🤣🤣
Solid gold!! this video is solid gold. Insightful, honest, funny, and very helpful to people with all different levels of experience (while being unique). You rock!!
I love it when people take time to compliment. Think you could have a word with my wife. Give her a few tips? 🤣🤣
Im
ALL in on the new Army Painter Fanatics. Just tried them out and they are amazing. Very consistent quality throughout the range.
Totally correct on all counts!
I just got the entire fanatic and speedpaint 2.0 sets and finally feel like I have paints that I like and are comfortable to use. I loved Pro Acryl but I don’t like how thin they are out of the bottle. I like to thin the paint down to my own preferences.
Boom! You nailed my sentiments exactly. Although the white. The white! 🤣
Totally! I wish other brands would do the same.
The ProAcryl Glaze Medium comes in a big bottle for $12 and works great for other high-opacity paints like AP.
Recently found your channel and its an amazing help as an absolute beginner.
Keep up the good work mate :)
Thanks man! Glad I could help out
Congrats on the 1 year celebration!!! Keep up the excellent work!!
Aw, thanks mate. Always a pleasure to hear from you. I can’t forget your username.
OMG, happy anniversary and the water under the bridge/reactivation combo line had me cackling for ages!
🤣 Thank mate!!
I guess you and I will be in the queue for large stabiliser bottles at midnight on April 19th!! 🤣🤣
Great video. Don’t know if I could ever go all in on a full paint range like that, but your reasons are solid. Seeing what’s in and what goes out was what made the video for me.
I guess these are specific to me being in or out but I’m glad it gave you some info.
18:27 I was looking into that brand because big amount modernate price... But man is the gorche just perfect as only get primary and secoundary colors then mix them and $8 a oz is really good like as good a Tamiya! So yeah thanks for discussing al the paints!
You’re welcome!
I've learned you can just never have enough paint somehow
Totally. I think I’m addicted to buying paint stuff. I wish I was as addicted to actually getting them done!
Ah so you’re addicted to the “pile of shade” too! Sometimes I think this is a collection hobby, not a painting or gaming hobby. 🤣
That was my plan but that inserted dropper might break so I’m not sure how to do this. 🤔
Good to have you back and congrats on the anniversary. Whats the next painting project for the new range? Ive set myself the goal of finishing one miniture a week in 2024 mainly to make me finish my 80% done black templars and start downsizing the pile of shame.
I wish I knew. More stuff just seems to arrive that never gets started. 🤣🤣
great video as i am just sorting my spare room out as i am about to start making models again after 30 + years and i keep looking at these paints to buy
Oh sounds like a cool project. I’m glad I was able to help out!
@@thestateofplay2023 if i need any help i will get in contact with you
16:17 here you said proacryl is great fro drybrushing but online I’ve heard the opposite that its not great because its so matt and also its more liquidy which has made me hesitant to invest in them since I dry brush a lot.
@@thestateofplay2023 thanks so much
I wonder what some kind of paint-designers are smoking by inventing silly names for paints.
Oh man I’ve actively avoided old world. Tried to convince myself I’m not interested. I hope the lie holds because I really don’t need more to paint…
@@thestateofplay2023 This is the curse - finally far enough in life I can afford all the models I dreamed of as a kid but have no time to paint anything lol
It’s like looking in the mirror!!
Ramble away! I love hearing about other peoples hobby experiences. Makes me feel better about the frustrations and choices I have! 🤣
Yeah shipping costs get you every time. Makes things that should be cheaper - not very cheap.
Also, you can mix inks and transparent paints with Contrast Medium and get some pretty good contrast paints. Inks are super useful.
Yes, I did a whole video about it on mixing inks. 👍🏼
More confidence DOES make you a better painter. 😜
Interesting video thanks! Would be interested to see one about the acrylic goache paints and mixing for mini painting. Not seen those before.
Honestly there’s no difference between them and mini paints. But you can mix them into a multitude of colours like in my ink mixing video.
Those are the Games Workshop Ash Wastes terrain for Necromunda!
@@thestateofplay2023 Awesome, thank you!
I know it's not a new product, but I recently tested the DD Rust effects. I don't like the fact that it reactivates...
Yeah my main issue too. And varnish completely dulls the effect down. 🤷🏼♂️
you convinced me and i just ordered my speed paint 2.0 mega set 3 mins ago
Boom!
Thanks Will, thorough explanation and analysis with an entertaining perspective as usual. Liked!
Cheers mate. Thanks for watching!
im kinda over my collection of vallejo, im thinking of replacing them with the fanatic range and some pro acryl, i have the speedpaint range and i love it
I think that’s a good shout. Mai my as I’ve found AP paints easier to get in my area.
Another great episode! Happy Anniversary!

I love the way you speak, blunt, honest, and direct. Apart from the accent, I would have thought you were Dutch. Thanks for your insight 👍
So happy every time you upload!
That is so true!

Always great content. Always an interesting take on things we all think about.
Thanks Craig!
I think Midwinter Minis once did gold by mixing silver and yellow ink. Always wanted to try that.
Yes, that works. And it works with mixing the in contrast and speedpaints too.
High five to you. I’m glad I’m not the only one.
Yes. A core set where the consistency is the same across the board for easier thinning. And where the coverage is the same too.
Why two thin coats when one thin coat will do! haha
@@thestateofplay2023- Heard good things about Pro Acryl. But at €7 a 22ml bottle it’s not cheap! Will have to look at those metallics too!
@@sirrathersplendid4825 It's not cheap, you're right. but as you use less paint with less coats, it works out actually cheaper.
A tip after hearing your mention of using all the light Tamiyas for zenithals- All of the Pastels in the speedpaint range also work great unthinned for zenithals. I especially love spraying Speedpaint Princess Pink over Molotow Dark Violet as a base.
Oh, I never tried the pastels as I just assumed they wouldn’t cover over a darker base.
@@thestateofplay2023 They cover better than the normal paints, as they seem to have some white pigment mixed in.
Yes, makes them more desaturated but I quite like that. Never really been a fan of super vibrant minis.
Welcome back to the Internet. Looking forward to seeing what you planned while you were laid up.
Now there’s pressure. 🤣
I have a silver and a copper metal colour. As you say they are fantastic as a base coat for any other metallic.
Totally!! 👍🏼
I know you said you were making space, but you owe it to yourself to try Kimera's black. I have a similarly ridiculous number of "black" paints and Kimera's is just an order of magnitude better for opacity, mattness, etc.
Thanks for that. I will.
I love that Army Painter put common color names on their bottles. Otherwise i would have had no idea Desolate Brown is actually an olive green lol
Oh there’s a few other colours like that too. 🤣🤣
@@thestateofplay2023 so far all the speedpaints i have fit the name to color fairly well (except desolate brown lol) but i dont doubt that one bit. They love their weird names lol
Can we use Liquitex hard and soft body paints The soft bodies look like they come in the droppers but the hard bodies come in the tubes
Yeah, I wish I’d thought of that. It’s not like I didn’t have access to the “ingredients”. 🤣 Thanks!
Looks like you did the same as me. 🤣 yes the wash will work but always feel
like us fixing something that shouldn’t need fixing. 😜
Is this video about Army paint or all the other paints? Considering I heard nothing about the Army paint and only about the other paints you are keeping with your paints (which total more total paint I would consider keeping as a primary set) what is this video about?
It’s about all the paints I consider worth keeping around from all brands. And yes, Army painter fanatic are top of the list.
15:30 Naw I just use water and they work great!
Another great video ... Glad to see you back
Glad to be back. Sounding like Vin diesel wasn’t going to be a great look. 🤣
Stick a citadel logo on it. Charge 4 times!
@@thestateofplay2023- Why would anyone actually want to buy a wet palette? You can make one for next to nothing with a cheap Tupperware box (mine cost 50p), a sheet of baking parchment and a sheet of kitchen roll.

…and you’ll go down the rabbit hole. Enough never seems to be enough. 🤣
Honestly they work very well. Due to the consistency once you’ve learned how to thin one. They all thin the same.
So how have you gone with the fanatic range? Was it a good decision???
Yes. Yes. After a few months now I can say not one regret.
This is a very informative video. Each chapter could be a whole tutorial in itself.
🤣🤣 Don’t tempt me. I have limited time already for videos! 🤣
Rakarth Flesh reminds me a little of the Red Grey that Pro Acryl makes, but a little lighter.
It’s close yes, but no one has matched it quite yet….😜
Do you have (or did you make) a video about the paint-rack? The ones you put the new Fanatics in…. I want it too…
And yeah… the typo on the box.. first thing I saw when the box came out.
I have 3 vortex mixers. Still not gonna make me like a paint I can’t varnish or control. 🤣🤣
I’m right there with you with Rakarth Flesh. I have been on the hunt to find its equivalent from AK to army painter, to Vallejo and Scale 75. Nope. Cant do it.
Yup, it’s a one and only Citadel paint. 🤣
@@thestateofplay2023 aye, a mix as you go thing. I would love them to put a chrome or silver out though.
Agreed
You can get those dropped bottles for essential oils... they are glass
Liquitex Inks and Golden High Flow are my main paints, as well as a couple of Vallejo I got when I first started painting. Buying art supply ink and paint when its on sale is still cheaper per oz than buying mini paint.
Yes you are so right. I guess I’ve just got to mini paints over the years. I just try to find the cheapest online store. 👍🏼
Tell me about it. I love artist colours. Not a fan of the prices.
Curious on your thoughts on Kimera Kolors since those are made for mixing
Have you tried culture hustle black 4.0?
Oh the blackest black. No, mainly because without some sheen the model looks like a black hole. Impossible to paint. 🤣🤣
Pulled the trigger on Scale75's War Front range ... Hope I haven't made a mistake ... Damn my indecisive nature!
Yup, it is. Also i´m doing your cmyk chart with green stuff 60ml dipping inks. (4,37€/bottle). Also very cheap.@@thestateofplay2023

🤣🤣🤣🤣@@thestateofplay2023
If i wanted to mimic the fanatic "triad" ranges with your cmykixong method, would I want to play with tone or value?
Interesting question. I’d probably do it by starting with the mid colour and adding the complimentary to darken it then adding white to lighten it. Which judging by the amount of white pigment in fanatic paints seems to be how they’ve done it.
Having said this you could also do it by taking the colour you want on the chart and adding more or less drops of the mix to each side.
I'm the same except I am buying full ak range. Ak is just the best for me, I am absolutely in love. BTW doesnt Two Thin Coats do a Rakkarth Flesh equivalent?
Ak was my first choice but I can’t get them locally sadly. And having the easy triads finally tipped it for me.
Yes the green gold has a white useful purpose but they should really enhance the range. 👍🏼😜

Oh yeah Dio. They surprised me as they blow Citadel out of the water.

What I've noticed:
@@thestateofplay2023 I can bet my middle testicle there will be expansions
Darks, coloured metallics, desaturated greens, way more browns and tonal blacks would be good.
Scale 75 does make complete box sets of each of their three main lines.
They do but it’s only 63 colours. Then there’s a fantasy and games set, and quite a number of other different sets. So not really a complete range in one big box. 👍🏼

Omg they are, aren’t they. Seems weird they made fanatic metallics when the speedpaints are better.

Any experience with two thin coats?
I tried them out at a few conventions and was quite impressed. They’re like citadel but better. The white still isn’t great or the yellow but the metallics are good. In the end the only reasons for not getting them were smaller range (at the time), and easy availability.
