    Did this one a couple of months back and got to say it's my favourite of all the brews I've done so far including a couple of all grains.

    Made this last night (first brew), I did 25gms Cascade and 50 Amarillo split into same interval additions. The hop packs come in 25gm packages so figured this would be easiest. Left overnight as I couldn't get the temp down low enough. Pitched the US-05 safe ale yeast this morning to wort at 22 degrees celcius.. hopefully this isn't too warm. Currently sitting in a cool internal bedroom wardrobe. OG at 1.050, hopefully can add the dry hops this weekend, will see!
    Thanks for providing an easy recipe for a starter brewer. Also my kitchen smells like a brewery, love it!

    I couldn't wait the 2 weeks for it to age in the bottle, so I tried it after a week, I know it'll get better with age but it already tastes amazing. It's the first of your recipes I've tried and gives me a good sense of appreciation of how good your all grain recipes must be. If anybody who's starting out is even considering making this, don't even hesitate.
    The flavor profile changed way more than I was expecting between tastings from the hydrometre readings. Will definitely be making this again. Cheers mate, keep up the good work

    Great video. I brewed this at beginning of March with just one modification, I used 1kg of light DME (and no BE2) as DME is pretty reasonably priced at LHBS . Very pleased with the results and will be putting another batch on soon. I am considering adding either some Chinook or Simcoe hops to the mix for a bit of pine flavour\aroma.
    Thanks for the recipe and video.

    yes does make it cheaper, especially because I got the things from the supermarket, but since I didn't do a steep of grains the BE2 will add some Malto-Dextrine to help with body and head retention. Cheers!

    Great video as usual. I have tried the recipe, and have bottled the beer for a week, and i could not wait to drink them, so i have been drinking them every night since. My feeling is that it is light, and full of fruity flavor, there is also a slight bitterness at the end, initially i did not like the bitterness, but after a couple of times of trying, i kind of like it, i am not sure after a couple of months in the bottle, the bitterness will go away. However my female friends like the beer, i think it will get better to drink it in hot summer. I even give my beer a name "Girls' choice". Thanks again, and just wondering if it is supposed to be bit bitter? BTW, i have put about 2 grams of sugar per 330ml for bottling, not sure if it is too much or less.

    • @HomeBrewNetwork
      @HomeBrewNetwork  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +redbrickize G'day! Yes it is supposed to be a little bitter! and the bitterness will get smoother as it ages. Your beers is very young at just a week in the bottle, give it a couple of weeks and see how you go! Cheers mate!

    hi mate, Im doubting you'll reply as the vid is pretty old, but here's trying. Followed the recipe, been in fermenter 8 days now and added dry hops after 5.
    There's about a 1cm "head" on top of the brew (it's in a coopers plastic fermenter). I checked gravity and it's steady at 8 (started around 44) so I can bottle soon (maybe a day or two). Do you wait until the thick foam on top disappears or is it ok to bottle with that there? my first try at anything other stan a can and brew enhancer - smells nice and tastes ok too :)

    Hey mate, love the videos. Dead keen to get into brewing, do you think this hoppy extract based ipa would be a good place to start? Keen to get into all grain but the extract kits seem like a good place to start and a bit less daunting. I have never tried a coopers home brew kit. Do they wind up tasting a bit like coopers green? Im not a fan of the coopers flavour, any way to avoid it?

    • @HomeBrewNetwork

    Hey gash great vid.
    I take it your only boiling the ldme for the hop additions?
    So if I only want aroma not bitterness I could just skip the boil and dry hop later? Or do you recommend a boil of the ldme?

    • @HomeBrewNetwork
      @HomeBrewNetwork  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +jap2door If you dont want any extra bitterness or flavour yes you can skip the boil and just dry hop. The boil adds bitterness, flavour and some aroma which changes this beer from an Australian style pale to more like a US Style Pale Ale! But sure if just want some aroma which does add a little flavour just dry hop! Cheers! Thanks for watching!

    Hi Gash, i decided to try this recipe and is going well in the fermenter at the moment, the only thing I did different to the recipe is I put the hops in a hop socks and put the first two stages of the hops in the fermenter after I completed the boiling process. Just was wondering because I have done this if it would be a good idea not to add the third edition of the hops? Cheers mate.

    • @HomeBrewNetwork
      @HomeBrewNetwork  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      G'day Dean, If you didnt boil any hops you really didnt have to boil anything. The boil was specifically for the hops , boiling hops helps impart flavour and bitterness into the beer, dry hopping, that is adding hops after the boil and cooling, only adds aroma, but anyway umm I actually would add the dry hops myself I think the ones in the fermenter have probably lost a bit of there oomph if they have been in there the whole ferment. Not sure how far along your ferment is but once you see the foam on top disappearing usually anywhere from 4 to 10 days add the extra hops and leave it another 4 days and it should be good to go! The beer you've brewed won't be like mine but it still should be quite tasty. Cheers mate!

    just out of curiosity mate if you bottled up and didn't secondary would you leave the beer three weeks in primary or just two. also would you do a diacetyl rest towards end or at end of FG?

    • @HomeBrewNetwork
      @HomeBrewNetwork  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +oily tick Sorry just saw this question! Simple beers like this are usually done in 2 weeks, the ferment is usually done in about a week to ten days, then a couple days sitting so its usually done in 2 weeks, not always, but usually. It doesn't hurt to ramp the temperature up a bit at the end to help finish off, although a 'diacetyl rest' isn't really needed on ales, they are brewed warm enough already. Cheers Gash!

      I hope it’s not that bad. I live in Darwin and haven’t got my fermentation fridge yet. It’s been in the aircon and sitting around 26c constantly. I used the kveik ale yeast. That yeast worked well with the last ginger beer I made.

    Hey Gash. I have just put this in the keg for a week and tasted this brew and the first few pints were delicious. They had a fresh fruity/citrusy aroma and similar taste. The last couple I have poured have a bit of an "earthy-grassy" after taste and seem to have lost the 'hoppy' aroma.
    I have followed you recipe to the tea. What do you think this might be? Have I started drinking too early? (couldnt help myself) or could it be the hops werent fresh? I am new to brewing so any help would be appreciated. Cheers.

    • @HomeBrewNetwork
      @HomeBrewNetwork  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gday mate, could be a few things, first thing I'd say is oxidation, oxygen pick up during transfer to the keg or if you used a secondary can kill off hop flavours quickly, you can avoid this by enclosed transfer which is difficult with a normal fermenter, thats where you would fill the keg with co2 and then transfer into the keg from the fermenter tap and directly through the beer post into the keg. A another way which works ok is to try and purge your keg with some co2 and then transfer how you normally would, you want your transfer hose to go right down to the bottom of your keg to avoid any splashing. You can get away without the co2 purge but again you need to avoid any splashing. When filled make sure you purge the head space of the keg well with co2. Also if you used the quick carb method of rolling the keg and bubbling co2 through this can strip aromas too.
      The other thing is you can get use to the beer so you dont notice the hops as much anymore as the you go through the keg, this is also a fairly lightly hopped beer compared to beers these days. I made it to be a sort of beginner hoppy beer. So maybe next time use a bit more especially in the dry hop, you could easily double or even triple the dry hop.
      Though with your description it sort of does sound like it may of been some oxidation, hard to avoid any at all at home, but just gotta do your best.
      hope this helps. Cheers mate!

    • @liamm9400
      @liamm9400 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gash Slugg Brewing yep i think ur spot on with the oxidation. I followed this video step by step so there wasnt any secondary. When i was transferring to the keg the hose wasnt on the bottom for a few seconds (when i noticed the splashing sound) which i thought i could have got away with...im gutted..is there anything i can do or is this batch doomed to have that aftertaste?

    • @liamm9400
      @liamm9400 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Gash...just to add fyi i did purge the keg witn co2 before transferring and also purged the headspace. Thd first schooner was by far the best i have made (cheers for that). Im learning that there is alot of work and beer that goes to waste by silly mistakes. I am still chasing my first decent brew but will soldier on. Cheers mate.

      G'day Bob, You can just use them by themselves, I find the real ale can is bitter enough so you don't really need to boil any hops. If you want too you could and some fuggles or other UK style hop will go well too. There is some ideas here www.cellardweller.net/index.php/extract-brewing/extract-recipes/extract-real-ale/real-ale-pre-hopped-extract and here www.cellardweller.net/index.php/extract-brewing/extract-recipes/extract-real-ale/real-ale-pre-hopped-extract-with-speciality-grains . Or you can just dry hop some hops, throw them in during the ferment maybe 30g. Ask as many questions as you like. Cheers Bob

Should I wait or give it a stir to hopefully spark up the yeast again to drop the FG and clear it up. Been at about 20 degrees since pitched the yeast. Maybe just give it a few days and see if it clears, at 20c it should be done if its been at 1.012 for a week. If you're going to cold crash it the murk really isnt an issue. Cheers mate!
