Today is day 18 of the 30 Day Decluttering Challenge and let me tell you, it's a challenge! Today we are getting rid of sentimental clutter. I like to keep SOME things for memories, but we can't keep EVERYTHING. Let's set the timer for 15 minutes and try to let go of the things that don't feel super special.
It's important we leave room for special items that may come into our life in the future and it's equally important that we don't pass on guilty clutter to our children!

I recently was forced to declutter in my sentementals in rapid speed because of hurricane Irma. Which ended up being a blessing as sad and frighting as it was. With limited amount of room in my car. I found what was truly meaningful to me in the process. ...
Wow you really straightened that up!! Totally get how you feel overwhelmed. It will all come together. Years ago I gutted my entire attic thinking that I didn't want my kids to have to deal with "memorabilia". Put things in storage bins and tossed the rest. Then a few years after that I purged the things that were in the storage bins and made two 3" binders with sheet protectors to store chronological school things, and other items like baby clothes went into two very small bins. I gave my kids each 1 binder and 1 storage bin for Christmas. They loved going through it and now it's manageable.
I also got rid of most of my childhood crap because I had a bad childhood AND my kids are not at all sentimental about “what mom colored as a little girl”. I didn’t want to burden them with it all someday. I felt SO FREE having the power to symbolically THROW AWAY my childhood lol
brightpurpleviking yes !!! I’m the same way ! My childhood was horrific , and one of my parents power moves was dumping all the things they kept on my door step unexpectedly when I rented my first house with my husband. I was so angry ! And I kept it all out of guilt for five years. Then I just threw it away. Old Mylar balloons from when I was born ? Notebooks from my mom filled with her poems and random thoughts when she was on bed rest after my birth ? No thank you ! I don’t need to carry around reminders that trigger me. So off they went. I kept one very small tote of photos of me and the three outfits from my first year of life because my kids think it’s neat , but that’s it. It’s ok to let it go !! Good job !!

Mementos are the hardest to get rid of. My oldest is in his 30’s and I still have his first everything. Lol I can do this . Btw what a beautiful bride you were.
yeah, tossing artwork etc from your kids childhood is tough. I bought a large plastic tub from target to store their stuff after purging it.
I really needed this video today! My bedroom is L shaped and the small part is my “craft/scrapbook” area. I haven’t done any of that in about 7 years but the stuff is EVERYWHERE and worse, collecting dust! I was just thinking yesterday that I need to work on cleaning it up. So I’m gonna set a timer and see how much I can get done in about 30 minutes. Gotta be BRUTAL!

Totally get feeling overwhelmed - by work, community commitments, housework, looking after my health, etc etc. Do what you can, and celebrate what you do manage to achieve 😘
I really need to go through all of my sentimental keeps!! I know there are some things I can let go of! I don’t see how you do everything you do!!! I don’t have one tenth those responsibilites & I feel like I could have a break down @ any given moment 😩😩 You inspire me to keep going for sure!!!! Thank You Cas ❤️

You could try selling the action figure. In original packing could be worth a lot.

I love your videos so much! That said... Why don't u not worry about the weekend videos and give that time to whatever is more important, like family time! Most of your viewers don't work the weekends so why should u? Maybe when the book is done and things at your house calms down a little and u feel like posting a weekend video then by all means . But seeing u all stressed out isn't healthy. Please ink about yourself and your family first. Thank u for all of the ideas and the funny after video stories ,they make my days little brighter,but u know what would make my day even brighter? Knowing that u r happy and healthy and not stressed so much! So I pray for u and your family blessed days ahead!

One of my most treasured possessions was a gift I received on my wedding day from an old friend of my husband's family. It was a thank you note that my husband had written as a school assignment when he was in the second grade for some cookies that the lady had made for his class. It's amazing that (1) she kept it all those years (for someone other than her own kid!) and (2) she realized how much it would mean to his new wife. So, yeah, memorabilia is hard to purge.

Ohhh I needed to hear the end of this video. I work full time as a home hospice nurse, as well as I have 5 children...4 at home that are teens and VERY active in things. My husband travels Sun-Fri for his job. But the kicker...I started back to school this past Monday in the Nurse Practioner program. I have asked many many times "what have I gotten myself into". It's online, but it's full time hours (12 credit hours). YIKES!! This is my first time on youtube this week, and normally I did an hour in the morning before the kids got up. But OVERWHELMED is the word of the day!!
6 MONTHS??!! OMG!! I thought you were going to say 6 weeks!! I agree with the person that suggested that you think about hiring someone to finish building your IKEA stuff. Joes busy, your crazy busy. This would take a chunk out of your stress. Hang in there girl!! Your videos help me more than you can know❤❤

(And during the video, I was hoping for your sake that you wouldn't set ambitious goals for yourself for your channel during the holidays this year. Memorabilia is such a sensitive topic for me. When my kids were little, we became homeless and had to leave the state within a few hours. I tried to bring pictures but had to leave everything like first shoes, hospital bracelets, first outfit, sonogram pictures and everything else. Now when I think about it I get really sad. I don't think I could let go of anything that I have right now.
I did not get rid of any memorabilia today, I am so not ready for that.Instead I got rid of some fall decor. I went through all my bins, 6 bins by the way and got rid of 1 whole bin of fall stuff. Side note, the 6 bins are halloween, Fall and thanksgiving stuff combined. I am finding as I get older I only want to put out minimal stuff for the holidays.
6 months of renovations!! Now I don't feel so bad. I have been renovating my office/craftroom like 6 months ago and it still is not done. Makes me feel better you still are not done either.
memorabilia is my nemesis! I have so much, partly because my mother kept nothing of mine and hardly took any photos (second baby syndrome) I have decided I will tackle photos first, I have taken all the school photos out of their card frames and put them in a book to save space, it's also great that they are in order so you can see my daughter grow!
Memorabilia is the hardest to go through for me. I always end up crying and have to stop for a bit. I love your channel.

This is one of the hardest things for me... to let go of... but so much of the stuff I keep, makes me sad when I see it.... So I shouldn't be keeping it. =( it's just so hard to let it go.
And yes.... I've been feeling increasingly overwhelmed, for years.... I just can't keep up nor catch up.... with anything.... and it feels like it gets worse every day.

I know in our area there are people who install and assemble ikea furniture and cabinetry. Check on kijiji. My husband is slow as mud when it comes to assembly projects. We lived with my inlaws for four and a half years while my husband did a whole home gut and reno of our house. I so get it. Give yourself the gift of sanity and hire someone. 💕

Ok, this declutter today...😥 Hard to do. Loved getting to see your wedding video clip! Remember to take some time out for yourself, even if it's just reading for a few minutes (or whatever you enjoy). You are so blessed you have the money/resources to do these things. You're awesome, Cas!
I'm feeling kind of overwhelmed at the moment too! We are putting new floors in our house, my first grandbaby is due in a couple of weeks and my parents and sister are coming from Florida for Thanksgiving, that I will be cooking for the whole family!!! Oh and I'm also helping to plan a 50th wedding anniversary with my sister in law! Yikes!
Dar Wilson go over to fly lady and down load her holiday control journal. It has one daily task to be prepared for holidays. I was under water last year and this list is really helping me. I'm the "hostess", too! Have a great time preparing for the 50th, those are rewarding parties. And please plan a special event for yourself when you make it through. A weekend away at a hotel, with hot tub and pool. Or book a massage. Something for YOU to say, "Good Job to me!" Best wishes, you can do it!
The wonder woman doll might be worth some serious bucks! I would do some research before taking it out of the box

Mostly because if your kids aren't into it, it'll just be a waste. Find out the value, ask if they want to keep or sell and they can get something they really want. No extra clutter though, lol!😉

I am so glad I'm not the only mom who doesn't keep all the little drawings or school work. I struggled a lot with this when my oldest started school. By the time my second started school I knew I couldn't keep it all. Now that my third is in school I let them choose what to keep and what they feel is important (it usually isn't much). I also donated most of the baby's first things, except the knitted blankets (thankfully she didn't make them genger specific) from my grandma, and the outfits they came home in. All of our pictures have been turned into digital files because it is just too much. I learned the hard way about paper clutter when my mother passed away and I was the one stuck going through it all (it took me roughly 7 years *not every day but that was too much emotional crap* to go through it all).
Ahhhh so hard ! I just keep all the kids homework in a bin , and then purge it at the end of the year. I keep special projects, and their writing journals because it shows the progress of their critical thinking and imagination and I love to look back on them - and so do they ! I also keep one coming home outfit, one pair of shoes- either their first or their favorite, and a special handmade item from their infant years. That’s it. No costumes, no toys, no extra clothing or blankets. I just can’t haul around endless crap from four kids lol 😂
Real life is so difficult to organize. Sometimes I think I'll cheat and get that sign that says, 'It's a shame you didn't call yesterday when it was tidy', or 'Home is where the heart is but also the mess is too!'. Loving watching the videos Cass, while I sit among the clutter lol.

Oh wow, you have so much going on this month. And I feel overwhelmed by my little life- just me and one (teenage) kid. And I'm not doing this 30 day challenge by the book, but using it as inspiration. I'm sorting out my shoes this week, new shoe racks, purged some shoes (not enough though I suspect). Thanks so much for keeping the inspiration going, it's great for us.

When you opened the bag of stuff you said your mom kept for you - on top was a school days book. I have the exact same one!!! I have mine filled with all of my school memories.
I'm so proud of you, you do so much in one day that I wish I could do just half that in a week....lol you are doing great and are such a blessing to all of us that follow you we are learning so much from you but please take care of your self your family and you are more important then all the above.... Im overwhelmed too. My life is so busy too. . I think it has too do with all my clutter in my house. Everyday i pray to God to grant me peace and to remind me that I'm blessed.
It wasn't for anything special. It was just a local fair. Not worth keeping.

Memorabilia - clearly the hardest and most painful things to part with. Sometimes I think we want them more than the kids. As we have lived in a number if countries with tge kids they akso have styff from different schools. I decided they will get one box worth each and will dump the rest with my eyes closed.
Your room looks so much better. I just did that with my guest room last evening ... I still have a ways to go...yeah, sometimes ya just gatta do that! ;) You are doing a great job...or i should say many great jobS, A lot of my kids things where destroyed in a garage fire because the neighbors trash got out of hand, so I have few clothes, shoes, baby blankets etc. only paper from school when they where older. I'm going through that this month...giving it to them. (my son is an artist he will want to keep some or that~ the rest he can throw out himself. lol. My kids are in there 30's it's time they decide what they want...whats left... I am freeing up my home...and it feels good. I had papers from 30 years ago.. out shredded....!!!

THANKS FOR GETTING MY STILL LAZY A** To go through this stuff! No close to u but I say: mini zoo... We moved from San Diego, CA to Portland, OR this April & lost a lot that way but Now u shown me to move ON go forward!! Don't have much but I see the bad habits starting... Seeing yes what we go thought, we need or definitely Do Not use... cuz it hadn't moved for 6mo. So THX! Thx for sharing all your great life stories!! 😍

Be careful with CDs of pictures. Sometimes they go bad. Get online backup so you have it all back. Ironically I was just thinking about all of the pictures I don’t have printed and how I should go through them. I bet 15 minutes a day would make that not so bad.

I can completely relate. Except we have been working on our house for 7 years. There is not a single room in the house that is done. Love watching ways to organize. My systems change every time we do another project in the house

Not gonna lie, I'm even getting second-hand guilt from this video. I'm terribly sentimental and I personally enjoy even the most random bits from my parents' lives that have been kept over the years, so my instinct is to similarily chronicle my life - not to mention my future children's! Not having them yet, I just keep every little thing pertaining to my beloved niece. I know it's not very healthy, not to mention hardly practical, but... those little hands worked on these hundreds of princess drawings so hard, with such passion and good humour, how can I get rid of them?? Not even a photo is the same as the actual piece of art! Even she doesn't care much for some of them, but I do... Welp. Definately admire you for your decluttering powers!!

I understand your work load, I have a lot on myself at the moment. My current mantra which seems to help is, How do you eat and elephant? One mouthful at a time. Just take it one task at a time. I appreciate all your videos this month, especially this one. I am still keeping my wedding cake topper and I am divorced!!! Haha I am about to find that and give it to goodwill.

You must feel so much better with those boxes tidied up! I even felt better... Random, but my daughter is growing out her bangs, and this morning I coincidentally pinned them back like yours! It is cute, though.
As for photos- mine were a mess. I went to Michaels, bought a plastic photo storage box (with coupon 😬) that holds like 16 or so small individual photo boxes. I labeled them vintage, addresses of where we've lived, Christmas, birthdays, elementary school, high school etc. It literally took minutes to put into order. Now they're in some kind of order and I don't have a million photo albums taking up space. Of course digital is great- but these were for existing photos I had.
Definitely the hardest to go through!

same here. I have photos of my boys firsts. a baby book and just a photo box for each kid. I'm sure school will be hard for me lol
That overwhelm usually means I just totally shut down and just stop..im in overwhelm so I feel that.

I have about 6 big totes and several smaller totes that I have been struggling with. I'm going to take your advice this weekend and go through it all. Wish me lots of luck because I'm already feeling guilty and haven't even opened them yet!

This 30 day challenge seems to be getting progressively harder.. but Cas I will give it a crack 🇦🇺 . Maybe I need to put it all onto 1 place first... at the moment it is scattered in the filing cabinet, spare room,and I think I have some in the shed. Ewww. Wish me luck! Absolutely the hardest things to get rid of is stuff from our children. Mine is grown and I try to pass it to them and of course and they say No Mom you have to keep it so that nothing happens to it. Omg, this is my struggle issue. My ex threw out most of my childhood memorabilia (basically, my NKOTB collection!). I told my son that I'd hold onto his things until he buys his 1st house and decides what he wants. I don't have much to "store", just 4 bins and he's 23 with 1 more year of grad school left.
I'm a sentimental gal which means having to grit my teeth every time I declutter stuff like that. Beautiful videos!
I take pictures with dates on top. Then I make a photo book. But I try to take a picture of my child with their artwork. I made a shadowbox with my kids homecoming outfit the cord stump clip first blanket etc. love your small wedding clip
I'm not emotionally attached to items, only pictures. But my kids are hoarders. I have bins of school projects, papers, etc...
My mom has bags full of stuff from school. There is 3 of us and there was about 4 bags plus 2 large containers full with stuff. I only took what I thought my kids might want in the future or things that were special to me
Just breath sister!!!! That's all you can do sometimes go luck yourself in the bath light some candles put on some Pandora and take a hot bath RELAX that's sometimes just all we need at the moment.... I have 3 boys my cat 5 fish my husband everyday they need something or just Idk it gets crazy and wed, Thurs, fri, and sat I have 5 boys until 5 pm so I understand how rough life can get I will be praying that you have some you time and are able to take it one step at a time!!!!!
Omg, try the Artkive app it's a fantastic way to store your kids artwork, grades, writings notes to you etc, and turn them into books. You can choose when and how often etc. Then give them the books when they get older. It's pretty easy to use and used to be free but it's like 5$ now to store your stuff. I struggle with getting rid of artwork to lol
Do what I do, I call a few friends and put together a work party. Have pizza delivered and it gets done THAT DAY! It will be more fun for Joe and it will get done. Make sure you have friends that have experience getting projects done quickly. We've done deck parties, outside entry stairs. Its fun. Like an old fashioned barn raising. Then you help when they call :)
Also check the internet before you open that doll. With the movie out, you might be surprised you can make some cash. And pay for a handy man service if your work party doesn't pan out ;D
