If GM were in another industry, Wall Street investors would flee any company with these failing financials that have no near-term prospect of recovery. Not to mention that commercial lending interest costs are rising despite Fed rates staying neutral, and a global trade war only adds to future uncertainty and risk. What's your plan, Mary?
Western companies simply have more to lose due to decades of investments in ICE vehicle manufacturing. With that said there is a tipping point whereby if they don't step up to the plate on EV vehicle standards and don't fully commit, they stand to lose even more going forward.

Even if they get on board with EV's and scale somewhat, Tesla will have FSD. At some point any car without it is dead if for no other reason than safety. If GM started today and licensed FSD, it would take 4 years likely to figure out how to integrate it into their vehicles and make it work. Tesla just said they will not devote their engineering resources to an OEM. There will probably be 5 or 6 OEM's all at the same time needing to do this necessary work. Gm also cannot really lower prices on their vehicles except maybe EV's. Their hybrids and ICE vehicles are already at scale.
No country can compete with China on EV production. China has the entire system from raw materials to the finished products in one continuous chain, its R/D and manufacturing of EVs by BYD alone are the largest in the world, no other car maker company in the world, not even the traditional big ICE car brands can compete with it. It's too late now.
Gov is reducing regulations so ICE sales can compete with EV sales in the US! Also getting rid of the $7500 tax incentive. Increasing oil subsidies to lower the price of gas. Bringing back the Big Block V8!
It's unlikely that Tesla will be first to achieve practical and safe fully autonomous driving. Don't listen to the umpteenth promise that FSD is almost here and look instead at who is doing the actual work and making actual progress in the real world. In any case, whoever is first can only patent their method, not the result. Most likely a number of viable solutions will emerge within a short time, and as some have suggested, the most effective implementations will incorporate more than one approach. Like a lot of tech these days, cross-licensing will be key. Integration is not that big a hurdle, as it will build on existing semi-autonomous implementations, which all the major OEMs have, and GM is ahead of Tesla at the moment, at least per auto journalists. Of course FSD will be much easier to integrate into SDVs and therefore EVs. What Tesla has going for it is that Musk has the keys to government and can game the system to Tesla's benefit, which may well result in US consumers not having access to the best FSD tech. As to manufacturing capacity, GM makes no hybrids at the moment but have several in the works, so obviously they can and will scale up there. GM had been drawing down pure ICE production for years to pivot to EVs, but they can reverse if that ever became necessary.

The company reported revenue of $47.7 billion for the fourth quarter of 2024, reflecting an 11% gain over the past year. The number surpassed Bloomberg's $44.46 billion estimate. GM saw strong demand across its product portfolio particularly in North America. However, net income attributable to shareholders for the fourth quarter 2024 was a loss of $3 billion and EBIT-adjusted was $2.5 billion. The loss was due to $4 billion charges of non-cash restructuring charges and impairment in China Joint Ventures and $0.5 billion charge to stop funding the Cruise robotaxi business.
With tariffs starting now the plants will all be shutdown within weeks if they don't offer exemptions and will be the end for the major auto manufacturers and then we can just buy chinese cars like just about every other product that is purchased in the US and Canada.
If GM made reliable and reasonably priced vehicles they would be in fine fettle. Decades ago, before they went bankrupt the first time, I bought some GM bonds that I just managed to break even on selling when they ticked up a bit. They had changed from a manufacturer to a lending company that furnished their customers with automobiles to spend their borrowed money on, quality be damned. Later on, we bought a couple of Chrysler vehicles---- a minivan and a small sedan, and they were terrible. I will not consider a Ford since the local dealer defrauded us. Since then it has been Toyotas and Hondas for us, but not with the latest over--computerized geegaws. In the unlikely event that we should outlive our current autos, it will be short block time, followed by detailing.
The cost of producing ICE vehicles is going upwards at an increasingly exponential rate. With worldwide supply chains shutting down and vendors going out of business left and right the price of gasoline vehicles is simply going up. There is no other way to earn profit anthey will do so with less vehicles sold. This means a shrinking business. Goodbye financing. Goodbye Wall Street coverage. If you are not hearing for the future you are busy closing down and going out of business.
Too many gleeing folks are here. That resembles the band still playing on the sinking Titanic. That includes Sam thinking his Chinese automaker freinds will save his TH-cam channel when it becomes irrelevant.
GM and other US manufacturers need to up sticks and move to Mexico. Manufacturers have to have certainty. Working under a shambolic Government is a licence to lose money. If Ford jumped ship as well south of the border then that would have a huge psychological impact and give certainty. Less possible peak profits and also less possible peak losses. Certainty and stability is king.
Meanwhile china is getting ready to build an outer space solar farm that can avoid the weaknesses of day cycles(no solar at night) that solar panels suffer from on earth
That idea has been around since the ark. Not economic and hugely polluting. Prone to damage by LEO debris. Russia has already threatened to flood LEO with shrapnel to destroy all satellites which would include any space solar array. Also much cheaper to build on the ground.
The entire western economy is dying. Which is quite scary! Unless you’re Chinese,of course. And the idea that we can change that trajectory by changing what fuel our vehicles use seems a little hard to believe. I don’t know.
Actually, China's economy could be in serious jepardy as well. It is difficult to get economic figures from China that can be trusted, but in 2022 the best estimate for governmental debt was about 77.1% of their GDP, which in most western countries would be considered high. Of course, the US debt is at 123% of the GDP right now. If the US dollar was not the reserve currency, we would already be bankrupt.
Straight from the recent GM press release, they are guiding their business to generate $11.65 Billion in profits in 2025, or +$11.50 per share earnings at the midpoint. The Q4 loss was attributable to shutting down their China joint venture and their Cruise Robotaxi project. The concerning part is the $2.5 Billion loss in equity on their balance sheet in the last 12 months, down to $65.6 Billion currently. Their market cap is only $49.2 Billion, so the market is quite pessimistic about General Motors.
Why is the future of automobiles autonomy ? I don't want a self driving auto, nor do I know anyone who says they do. We want affordable cars "We" can drive and autonomy be damned.
1. Elon wants to provide transport as a service, so people don't need to own a car themselves. 2. As people get older, their driving skills decline, so they can stay mobile when they are no longer safe to drive. 3. Back from an evening at the pub! 4. Many people would prefer to be on their phone instead of steering the car. That said, I really enjoy driving when it can be fun.
The point of building cars in Canada and Mexico is to serve the domestic markets in these countries. They simplified a bit so all of one model gets built in one of the 3 countries. The idea is overall each country builds as many cars as they sell.
GM had their driverless car programme cancelled because by Govt because one of its car drove over a person and didn’t stop. It dragged the person down the street. That’s why GM cancelled the programme. The authorities wouldn’t allow them to restart GM led with the EV1 in 1996 and it matters lol 🎉

Car sales will drop no matter what, as prices will rise to build in US or due to the tariffs. Plus it will not create jobs, new plants will be mostly robots
ICE vehicles aren't going anywhere as long as poor infrastructure and low miles per charge remain. We're 10-15 years away from that even remotely happening.
10-15 years ICE will still be the majority of cars on the road even if there is a major shift in sales, the question is will people finally stop worrying about and ignore all the misinformation being constantly spewed about poor infrastructure and EV range issues.
@erktrek It's the truth. I live in a region that gets very hot in the summer and very cold in the winter. I've forgotten my cellphone in my car during both extremes and it absolutely does affect battery life and performance. Not to mention, not everyone has access to home charging so they'd be completely dependent on public charging which is a train wreck waiting to happen.
Poor infrastructure only matters for cities where you can't park on or next to your own land, and these places have money and short cables. I never used a public charger in more than a year of owning an EV. Even some Chinees EV's now matches Tesla's 620 km range. Even if everyone switched to EV, the total electricity usage would be pretty small compared to airconditioning, heat-pumps, and industry. In places with very old cables, the grid will need to be upgraded, but that should have been done years ago, and it will take at least 10-15 years before most drivers have switched to EV's, the grid can be upgraded while cars are sold, one does not need to wait for the other. How many years did it take Norway to upgrade their grid for EV's? Europe and even the U.K. had no large black-outs either. I'm sure the U.S. will somehow manage.
@@williamfreeman6935 going to disagree with you there. I own an EV and can tell you for most people given the average daily miles driven and the average capacity of most EV's it is a non-issue EVEN for those who cannot charge at home even in cold weather - was under -11 C / 12 F in our neck of the woods recently for 2+ weeks, no issues at all given our driving habits.
EV technology is antiquated and massive resource wasting endeavour. It is hard for ppl who experienced western lifecycle, but the new guys on the block don't seem to mind adopting it as they experienced nothing else before. Everyone with common sense is just waiting for the correct and efficient materials for production of batteries instead of the current double D type chaining of batteries.

Revenue equals vanity - profits equal sanity.
Roll on the sequence to 1929 :-)
Sam, How is the Hummer EV not world-beating? The Chinese and European have nothing in it's class. Zero. Nothing.
With tariffs starting now the plants will all be shutdown within weeks if they don't offer exemptions and will be the end for the major auto manufacturers and then we can just buy chinese cars like just about every other product that is purchased in the US and Canada.
Keep in mind that at least half of Americans regard Trump as a dangerous fascist, and that Musk's conversion to Trumpism renders him a nullity.

From Trump to Mary Barra = start making affordable cars for us Americans! A dying american Icon.

Even the people in the oil rich Middle East are buying up and driving EVs. 😂

How do you make so much content? Do you sleep?
Too many gleeing folks are here. That resembles the band still playing on the sinking Titanic.
That includes Sam thinking his Chinese automaker freinds will save his TH-cam channel when it becomes irrelevant.
GM is up $10 on the year.
But down 10 in the last 3 months
What does Trump want from Canada and Mexico for the tariffs to be refunded? Anyone hazard a guess?
Just brought home a 2025 Equinox EV, Terrific vehicle. Trump is screwing most automakers.Tesla is going to get hurt and deserves to be.

Gonna be a hell of an extension cord.

I thought Trump wanted to build more cars in America. Didn't he say this?
Musk hurts his rivals with his success. No need for anything else
The entire western economy is dying. Which is quite scary! Unless you’re Chinese,of course.
And the idea that we can change that trajectory by changing what fuel our vehicles use seems a little hard to believe. I don’t know.
Cant be that scary - BYD fanbois are cheering it on.
Not scary for Australia as China is our most important trading partner.
Mary is incompetent
mary will soon buyback stock to male it go up.
Because they went all in on EV's that aren't selling.
GM is dead
Piss poor quality in all vehicles ..
Used to be the best now JUNK
Barra couldn't have known than Musk would poison his brand.
Lmao - Tesla is the best, so they say, but Tesla fanbois won't buy it because kamala lost? Smdh.

Wait till trumps dopey tariffs kick in… yikes.
GM had their driverless car programme cancelled because by Govt because one of its car drove over a person and didn’t stop. It dragged the person down the street. That’s why GM cancelled the programme. The authorities wouldn’t allow them to restart
GM led with the EV1 in 1996
and it matters
lol 🎉
Fake news
Woke Mary killed off the company….but now they have one last chance to dump EVs and get back to profitability.
You are the reason GM and the entire United States is failing.
Why the political misdirect, this was an immense business faux-pas, where GM were trying to write forecast cheques that could not be cashed.

EV buyers will choose Chinese EVs over Tesla due to Elon Musk says study
th-cam.com/video/tXiX7n0Y5H0/w-d-xo.html
ICE vehicles aren't going anywhere as long as poor infrastructure and low miles per charge remain. We're 10-15 years away from that even remotely happening.
China is 2-3 years away to 100% new cars as EV.
Damn! That Hummer EV looks real good. For sure better looking that Tesla Cybercrap.
