Larry Coryell is second to none.
He was also a very nice man.
Cindy’s playing makes many grown men drummers cry.

Love this. Cindy, George and Julian cranking speed and driving accuracy, Gary delivering funk… then Larry doing his trademark thing, almost sounding off key. Creating space. Tripping down the stairs. You have to listen a few times, bearing in mind he is doing this on purpose, then it clicks in your brain, and you fully understand why he considered one of the great masters of jazz guitar.

Jazz allows 'offkeyness', 😂, but, more seriously, 'offtimeness' is much more tricky to master.

I saw Mr Coryell more than anyone else and my favorite was a small venue (100 people tops) back in the seventies. Solo show - he played piano, acoustic guitar and electric. I still think of that show fondly. Hats off to Julian - I imagine he had one proud papa.

It's nice to see a drummer really enjoying her work and not being too cool to express her joy .Saw Cindy at a recent drum clinic in Sydney . Very humble person and a great ambassador for the drums .Larry Coryell had impeccable time and tremendous feel with the guitar .

Larry's playing on this session reminds of Barney Kessel: very modally inventive and gritty with an aggressive attack. Leaving space is always harder for some guitarist but Larry was a master of space and time, right? Right. Julian is a guitar god as well. And Cindy? Drum goddess of the kingdom of drums. Hats off to George too. Interesting dichotomy: a master sax player who seamlessly uses circular breathing and a master guitarist who leaves breathing space. Gary brown holds it all down with virtuoso funk and groove. And I look forward to catching Julian next time he is in the SF bay area. What a fantastic player. So sorry for his loss. What a closeness they must have had. RIP Larry Coryell.

    • @Joshualbm
      @Joshualbm ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@EbonyPope I wonder if you know what he was going for and missed? I hear what you're hearing. but he's also making up some lines and rhythmic choices that are chunky and dirty by design.

Somewhere in the early Seventies a girlfriend of mine knocked at my door and walked in with a guy who had a guitar case in his hands.
She had met him somewhere in our town Vlissingen in the Netherlands, She had told him that I can play the guitar as well, and so she took him to my house... I did not even recognized him at that moment.
He told us, he was playing in a band and that evening he had a gig in " De Piek " a place where I and all the other local hippies used to hang out.
Many world famous bands used to play there over the years.
The man she took to my house was Larry Coryell !! I couldn't believe my eyes and ears when he told me his name.. OMG there in my house was Larry Coryell !!
We played together for one hour or so, because he had to go back to his Hotel. But when he was leaving he invited us to come to the gig.
Cool fact is, I remember him answering my question, that he never let someone play on his guitar, just before a gig...
because I asked him if I could play something on his guitar.
There were no cell phones back then in the Seventies so I have no pictures....Only, when he left he forgot his pick in my house.... and I still have it.

Larry's show in Napa was wonderful. Too bad there weren't more in attendance... he dedicated the show to Wes Montgomery....played much in his style.....and a piece to Jim Hall. After the show, he stuck around and talked with everyone. Loved his Duke Ellington piece. The bassist and drummer....great! They had it working.....
He is such a good person! Got an autograph, talked with him for 5-10 minutes....picture, etc. What a warm caring guy....and he's still got it!

It seems that jazz guitar is overlooked and underappreciated. Some think it boring, I think it's beautiful especially Tal Farlow, Mike Stern, Metheny, that type of sound. This kinda music tickles your ears and goes straight to your brain cells.
