Crazy thing I just learned..... Christian Bale comes back to voice the father in the new Studio Ghibli movie, The Boy and the Heron. As it turns out, the Japanese voice actor for Howl, Takuya Kimura, ALSO came back to voice the father in the new movie. So in multiple languages, they managed to bring back the same voice actors which was Studio Ghibli's request. Just so amazing!
The English dubs of Castle in the Sky and Nausicaa were not as good as you would think. (Although I have to give props to Mark Hamill) Even Kiki and Totoro have their flaws. But I do like Kirsten (Kiki) Dunst and the Fanning sisters.

I love most ghibli English dubs, especially Howls. The “That’s my girl” always makes wanna giggle and kick my feet and all that. His voice is just so rich and calming and everything about Howl’s is super comforting.
One of the best things of ghibli movies is that regardless of the VA, they always keep this ghibli voice. You know that calm, elaborate, full of emotion, but with great diction still. Sounds like an asmr. Like any VA, whether the superstars in hollywood or the smallest roles in the movie, has kept this identity in their voice. now ghibli is not only visually aesthetic, but asmr as well
i also appreciate that they dont do the stereotypical high-pitched, breathy or whiney anime voice. i dont think miyazaki would’ve allowed it tbh because hes expressed his dislike for it. they feel like real kids with no weird sexualisation

yeah, I watch Howl’s Moving Castle in dub precisely because of, and for, Christian Bale. I physically do not think I can handle going through the rest of the movie anymore without getting to hear “That’s my girl :)” at the start. it puts air in my lungs and makes my skin glow LOL. perfect dreamy Howl voice.
I remember being surprised it was him too lmao, I didn't find out until the end credits came on and I saw his name. I honestly screamed and started laughing because my immediate thought was "BATMAN IS HOWL?!"

i f*cking love it when you find out big name actors are actually giant nerds at heart. Its so damn wholesome. Not that being a studio Ghibli fan makes you a nerd, but lets be real back then for a western person to love it, that was 100% a niche. When i found and showed Howls Moving Castle to my family it was the first time my family showed concern towards me lol the kids loved it though.
I only learned in my teens that I had grown up with Christian Bale all through my childhood... I suppose that's ONE reason why Howl's Moving Castle is my favourite Ghibli film! :)
Ghibli dubs are interesting considering a lot of them were handled by disney, and loved to give them star studded casts. Even so, it's interesting to pick out and learn that some actors you wouldn't expect to voice act for anime had roles. Like Patrick Stewart in Nausica, and while Mark Hamil is a well known voice actor, I don't hear him in anime very often (Mark was in lapuda)
Patrick Stewart was perfect for Lord Yupa. He matched how I imagined Yupa’s voice in the manga. Mark Hamill’s super versatile as a VA, especially when it comes to villains. Muska’s a pretty chilling character because you don’t know how far he’s gonna go until it’s too late. Compare that with the Joker where you know he’s gonna do exactly what he says and worse.
Studio Ghibli films are the exception to the "always watch in the original language" rule. Their dubs are always massively on point. Great for watching with kids who aren't up to an hour plus of fairly fast reading yet. I'm the eldest of 5 and my youngest brothers love spirited away as does my mum.

To be honest, I wish I could see Howl's moving Castle for the first time again. I saw it as a kid for the first time, then searched for it years later literally this spring because it was so memorable for me. It felt like I was watching it for the first time again.
I love watching all the Ghibli films in both sub and dub, because they always get _awesome_ actors for the English dubs! I just love hearing voices I recognize in characters I love.

Uma Thurman was a VA in Nausicaa as the Queen. That's what convinced me to watch all ghibli movies in English to not miss out these big names.

Ya like Hayao Miyazaki? His early work was a little too, constructed realism, for my taste. But when Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind came out in '84, I think he really came into his own.... Commercially and artistically!
Well damn. I’m not a fan of anime but Howls Moving Castle is one I’ve watched and enjoyed so this has definitely gone over my head.
