    Have a question. I’m planning on restocking my pond soon and start with some bluegills but wondering what I can put in the pond so they can eat on their own I live about an hour away from where my pond is located and only go out there on weekends so feeding them pellets will be a problem.

    • @DinsmoreOutdoors
      @DinsmoreOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If there are no fish in the pond at all, I would order minnows from anderson`s and stock them first, then you stockk 1,000 bluegills a acre. the larger automatic feeders like I have you can fill up with 50lbs of feed and would really have to fill it back up every 3 weeks to a month depending how much you feed. for me its once a month.

      Buy a solar powered fish feeder. I got the 70 lb. capacity Texas feeder and set it for early morning feeding and a late evening feeding for 50 seconds each. Works great!

    I use eagle claw carlisle ANZ size 8. 218F-8 is stock number. They have long shanks so its easy to pop it out of their mouths. Or easy to reach with needle nose if swallowed. Very seldom do I have to cut the line so they can work it out.

    I have young blue gills, 12 months old, relocated from a hatchery nearby ... to my 9 month old pond, crickets crawling everywhere on my lands in Central Arkansas this year.. Might I ask for suggestions on how to get those crickets into my young fish' pie hole? Thinking of using night lights off a dock to draw in the fish for free food supply .. Thank you for this posting...

    • @DinsmoreOutdoors
      @DinsmoreOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was going to say the same thing, a bug light hanging over the dock. Also can take branches and lay them over the bank, and bugs will crawl out on to them. Thank you for the comment and for watching!

    You have the correct balance in there! Glad to see those gills and how fat they’ve gotten. Thanks for your information as to how and when you feed them....I don’t have a feeder and usually feed mine manually around 5:30 pm with the same feed... What feeder do you use? I want some consistency, so I’m thinking about getting one. That way I stop getting so attached. My wife probably thinks that I’m some basket case as I call the fish my babies when I come in the house from a feeding.

    More concerned about my bluegill than my bass. I can no longer afford purina aquamax 400 grower. So i now feed mine catfish FINGERLING food. Feeding 3 times a day. I see greatly improved growth rates compared to not feeding them but not nearly as much as with the purina. A few weighed slightly over a pound after 1 year.

    • @DinsmoreOutdoors
      @DinsmoreOutdoors  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I feed mine the tractor supply, trophy fish food, it's 36% protein, and they are very healthy and quiet a few over a pound. Only $13 a bag too.

    • @ThatOneguy-br3uf
      @ThatOneguy-br3uf 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because Aquamax is a fish meal based protein not a plant based makes a huge difference in growth and price

    I enjoyed your video. I have a 3000 gallon koi pond with about a dozen bluegill in it. Do you feed your bluegills year round? I have always stopped feeding the bluegill when I stopped feeding the koi usually when water temp falls below 50 degrees. I use game fish pellets from TSC. For a treat I feed the bluegills turkey bacon. Kind of expensive but they go crazy for it.

    • @DinsmoreOutdoors
      @DinsmoreOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes I feed them all year around, the same feed from TSC that you use. Just during the summer they feed in the morning and in the evening, and when it getting colder in the winter the get one feeding in the afternoon when the water is the warmest for the day and it only a small amount so those who want to eat still can.

    Nice looking Gills! I was hoping you would catch one of those Redbreast . Aren't Redbreast like Shellcrackers by only spawning once a year? I guess it kind of stands to reason you'd always have much fewer of them than the Gills I reckon?

    • @DinsmoreOutdoors
      @DinsmoreOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! There where only 18 stocked so you are VERY lucky to catch one. The only spawn once or twice a year. Should be doing an update video to this soon, now they are 2 years old and even bigger!!
