My favorite bluegill bait when I was a kid was raw bacon & the Bluegill loved it. Going camping I could usually talk my Mom out of a couple of strips of raw bacon.
As a teen, a friend and I spent a few years culling a stunted pond full of small bluegill. We would catch hundreds of small ones a day and pitch them in the woods for the raccons. Although earth worms were a bait of choice we were literally at times catching them off bare hooks About five years later we were landing much larger ones, including some hybrids. We also noticed an increase in the bass population. Somehow as kids and from reading countless fishing magazines we had an intuition what needed to be done to turn that pond around. It took a few years but absolutely worked.
Used to 'borrow' a can of corn from Mom's pantry and fill a stringer full in a few hours. We had a fish fry every Friday in the summer, all from fish, we caught as kids. Think Dad appreciated the help.

When I was a kid my favorite bluegill bait was the inside of a 3 Musketeers bar. Best bait ever. I could take a bite and then put some on the hook. My uncle would take few feet of twine and tie a knit on one end. Bluegills would hit the knot and he would jerk and they would flip up on the bank.
When I was growing up my family grew crickets commercially and sold them over a large area. Our cricket buckets weren't the ones you buy at the bait shops, they were 5 gallon buckets with screen wire stapled over large holes cut in the sides. When we went fishing the way we found the big ones was to literally toss a handful of bugs on the water. If the big ones didn't start popping them pretty quickly we moved on to a different spot. I always had a rig ready with a hook and no weight. When we tossed the crickets in I'd toss my line in the bunch. Never failed to get me hooked up, that topwater action was a blast.
The gulp worms work great. I've been using them for over a year and I catch a lot of bluegill. I normally use a #12 hook (I fly fish) with a tiny split shot on 4lb line. Rarely a cork. Bigger the worm can lead to a bigger fish. Biggest fish I caught was about a 2lb bass lol...huge for that #12 hook.

A rubber spider works the best. The little gills bite at the rubber legs and swim off with it not getting hooked, then the big gills take the spider away and get hooked because they get the whole body and the hook.
Beer batter and panfish deep fried will really surprise you how good it is! We’d catch them, clean them and fillet the meat off the sides and de-skin and put them in milk cartons, cover with water and freeze. You can keep adding fish fillets until full. So much fun catching bluegills!!! I've been getting tons of them lately (in the 6 - 9" range, looking for a 10") just throwing a crappie magnet grub on a 1/32 oz jig at my local ponds. I use the Gulp scented products (minnows or tipping the jig with a crappie nibble) when the bite is slow (cold water and middle of the summer) and they work great but right now here in NC the bite is on and they are very aggressive, hitting the jig as soon as it hits the water. I've caught a bunch of bass as well with them, they catch everything!

There are some big largemouth in that are and gar too. I didn’t really see them swimming around so I’m thinking they were buried up in some cover. Thanks Shawn!
Ha yes, you don’t know how many times I’ve been asked that one. I used to flip brush piles for crappie years ago on the river and I would under flip a bobber and minnow then cast at specific spots and it became second nature. I tried using a finger like everybody else and it felt weird.
Usually I set the bobber at about 2 feet from the hook but sometimes you gotta figure out if they want it at a different t depth. The split shot I usually put a foot from the hook so you can go to a foot deep with bobber.
Not many things in life beat the thrill of watching a bobber disappear. I felt that way at 5 and now 65.

I prefer fishing for bluegill then bass because its alot of fun and they take so many varieties of lures and presentations.. I have these small red grubs from gulp and they love em. scrappy guys! Catch em up!
Yes Love it!
(( 👀 )) I'm watching this video and thinking here, there's got to be some big huge largemouth and smallmouth bass in that area. bass loves eating bluegills and sunnies plus you got all that cover as well. Nicely job well done on catching those great panfish
There are some big largemouth in that are and gar too. I didn’t really see them swimming around so I’m thinking they were buried up in some cover. Thanks Shawn!

Very welcome you are
Cool content. Subbed👍🏽
Thank ya Fabian! Appreciate that bud!
Not judging love the videos but is there a reason you cast the way you do?
Ha yes, you don’t know how many times I’ve been asked that one. I used to flip brush piles for crappie years ago on the river and I would under flip a bobber and minnow then cast at specific spots and it became second nature. I tried using a finger like everybody else and it felt weird.
I use maggots and the setup I use would catch them every time not even trying
Oh yeah those maggots will catch them
A can of corn works also
Yes you got that right bud! Corn will catch them for sure.
I do good with corn.
Yes corn is hard to beat!
Thank you
Your welcome bud!
Small fish is good bait for bigger fish !! !!
Yes! Jerry that’s exactly right!
Has your kayak ever flipped over while fishing?
I have honestly never flipped my kayak and I don’t ever sit down. Lucky I guess
Dynamite works great
Ha best bait out there!
Can go wrong with a can of sweet corn and a good spot either haha
Yes! I actually am planning
On going fishing with some corn soon.
Did he show where on the set up he put the bobber and split shot?
Usually I set the bobber at about 2 feet from the hook but sometimes you gotta figure out if they want it at a different t depth. The split shot I usually put a foot from the hook so you can go to a foot deep with bobber.
I use fish like that for bait
Yep they would be some good bait
All I caught was turtles with this Walmart bait(Gulp)….Our Bluegill & Bass were running in the opposite direction 😂
Dang that stinks. They can’t resist it where I fish.
I’ll be damn he’s using the Xfinity speed stick, the exact same rod that I was using catching all the turtles with that bait…wth
