    OK, I'm not going to lie... this particular episode got me in the feels.
    My grampa has been passed away for several years now but one of his favorite things to do in world was to go fishing at his local lake, catch as many bluegill as he could,
    bring them back to my grandma (who was not very thrilled about it) and let her cook up these little bluegill chips - essentially because the fish are so small, they don't make for a very large bite! LOL
    Listening to this episode made me miss him a lot. ☹

      Grandpa knew what he was doing, sure you can catch a bigger fish and get a nice filet, but something about the taste of those little ones is always much better!

      Nostalgic. My grandpa was like that too but replace bluegill with Common Breams.

    Bluegill are interesting little fish. I have a 10 gallon aquarium with 4 little baby bluegill. Three are the little baby fry, and one is a bit larger, a young adult. I actually caught them with a buttefly net about 7 - 8 months, and I started out with 18 little bluegills. The bigger one decided to be the courageous one of the grop, because he went up to where I was on the concrete pipe, and he came over, so I started slowly bringing the net behind him. He turned around, and swam into the broken butterfly net! (The handle broke off, so I had to hold it by the rim.) They LOVE Brine shrimp! Many fisherman are always saying that bluegill are stupid, but their just very curious fish, like the one that swam into my net. Whenever I catch one, and I don't unhook him in time, then he dies, and I always feel awful about it.

    The boy looked into the shallow water where he saw several bluegills clearing out nesting spots on the lake bottom. They had removed all debris, and were washing the sand in their mouths, untill only a clean circle remained. When finished each fish began a hypnotic dance over top of their nest. Flashing their bright colors in the sun, and showing off their best moves. All to attract a female to lay her eggs so they could fertilize and protect them until birth.
    The boy became curious, so he threw a berry into the closest nest. The fish quickly removed it, inspected his nest, then continued dancing. Each time the boy repeated the process, the fish grew more aggressive. Until the time came when the fish took the berry to his neighbors nest, threw it in, then attacked his neighbor.
    After returning from his attack, the fish would no longer dance. Just swim in angry guard over his nest.
    This seemed like the perfect opportunity for further in depth study.....So the boy threw a handfull of berries into the nest. Well as one could imagine, it was on ! The water erupted into boiling chaos as the fish attacked the entire community. Some fought back, others just watched as he destroyed their nests untill the water filled with mud that blocked all view.
    THe boy continued on his way, while considering a career in international politics.

    I have several of these guys in my aquarium right now. Probably 20 or 30 small ones, with one big one around 4 in. They are so cool

    0:35 How are you going to make a video about the bluegill and show a picture of not a bluegill?

    • @TheFishingNomad
      @TheFishingNomad ปีที่แล้ว

      @@big.boi_v1795 It's not. A bluegill wouldn't have a white margin around the operculum nor would it have those horizontal lines on the head behind he mouth.
