I'm not talking about Hicham, I'm talking about the rest of the world. The speed they are running at is an all out sprint for 95% of the world. For Hicham this probably feels like a relaxed sprint.

It's a pity that El Guerrouj lost a tactical race to the Kenyans in Sydney the following year. Then again, if he didn't feel the sting of that disappointment, he may not have had the burning desire to pull off that amazing 1500/5000 double in Athens.

Probably the best 1500 m race in history in terms of times and line up: 4 olympic champions, 2 world champions, 2 european champions and world indoor champion. El Guerrouj as WR holder, and three other guys who are ranked 3rd, 5th and 7th on the all-time list. Interesting that El Guerrouj wasn't able to beat Ngeny next year at Sydney Olympics, Kenyan ended there long last domination of Morrocan in this event.

It's better than Moscow 1980 or Monaco 2015 or Oslo (Mile) 1979 or Christchurch 1974; all the best athletes of the '90s in pretty good form. A competitive race in a super fast time. It showcased the world's greatest miler at his peak. El Guerrouj is probably the best ever on the strength of his times and competitive record.
Now this was a race. Normally when it comes to major championships like the worlds or the Olympics you have three slow laps with the sprint on the last lap. However, this was a race from the start and didn't end with the kickers winning on a last lap burst. I wish more distance races were like this.
You are right Brian. This is the Real 1500m even when El guerrouj lost in Sydney Behind Ngen. That was because the pace was a little slow 3:32 which is by the way the Olympic record. El guerrouj never lost a race with a fast pace
In Sydney El Guerrouj was let down by his teammate dropping the pace in the second lap.

The guy never tested positive for any drugs. And, juice or no juice, as mentioned, phenomenal times. If he was on it, then others may have been to. Level playing field.
A doctor in France say that Hicham el Guerrouj heart was bigger than normal due to hard training he had all his life. 5 Hours a day, that's his secret. His coach said he can runs even 10 thousand without issue.
That is just it. The guy was a naturally brilliant athlete.
The legend in Morocco says that he used to donate blood before his workouts...
Having a bigger heart is not necessarily a good thing.
Doping is endemic in sport. The IAAF has considered expunging all pre 2005 records. It’s reasonable to assume that something may be going on with the outliers.
Best Race Ever. I love watching great foot races. The only competing video to this are world record races (of all distances).

Noah Ngeny learned a hard lesson here, he let Estevez split him and El Guerrouj and suddenly he was too far behind. What he learned from this race put him in position to beat the Moroccan in Sydney Olympics next year. He broke Olympic record there and ended 3-year domination of El Guerrouj.

Alexx87 I agree but I think el guerrouj looked unbeatable here. I think El guerrouj lost in Sydney because the second lap was so slow it allowed Noah to be right there in the end to show his superior 800/1000m speed.

The ignorance of Cram about a race over a distance where he used to shine! Around 2:30, Cram rambles on after recalling El G's fall in Atlanta, that in more recent races he has been outkicked on one or two occasions when the pace was slow. In reality, El G did not lose a single race over 1500 m/mile from 1997 until his loss in 2000 (Sydney) to Ngeny. The fact that El G's records 1500m, mile, 2000m) still stand almost 25 years later, also adds to the "Jarrow" lad trying to belittle EL G.

He didn't say "95% of their speed". He saying that the pace El Guerrouj is running would be an all-out sprint (or more) for 95% of the rest of the world's population. The average person would have difficulty hanging with El G for any random chosen 100m stretch of that race.

Great run, but did we really need the timer clock and records obscuring the view in the home straight. Would have preferred to see El G than the clock infront.

I agree totally that jogging 3:10 for 1200m then sprinting 300m isn't a race (& is one of the reasons why I believe lanes should be used in the 800m, to always ensure a fast pace), but that wasn't Cram's beef. Like you said, ELG was going that fast anyway, so why get your pal to back your pace up? That was Cram's point.
The "dumb announcer" is 3:46-miler & former 1500m World Champ Steve Cram (so knows his stuff). He wasn't bemoaning a fast pace at all. He was merely pointing out that the winner didn't need a mate to help the pace, and that, more importantly, if you are going to call something a RACE, then having assistance is hardly that. Would you call it a fair fight if two boxers squared up and one had 2 ounce gloves while the other had 16 ounces? The pacemaker took away from the "race".
I was generalizing. It wasn't a direct quote even though I put quotes. They were to specify what he was saying in his tone. It's at 2:10 if you care though.

Fine. Instead of using how he worded it I'll be direct. He indeed never said it was dumb. Thing is; he hinted at it due to a "pacer" being involved. Although if you watch ElG was up front for the first 300m and then ditched the guy after 400m more.So having someone in front for 400m of a 1500m doesn't take it away. ElG was going to go that fast anyway. Jogging 3:10 for 1200m then sprinting a 300m isn't a race.They couldnt keep up no matter what. A race is to get there the fastest not just first.
Relaxed sprint and all out sprint are different things.
