Has anyone else noticed, but the clock stops about 8m short of the 1200m mark. Look closely where the clock stops on each of the first 2 laps (on the 2nd curved line on back straight), & then see how it stops short of the 1st curved line on the 3rd lap! Therefore the 1200m time given of 2:55,6 is definitely wrong & is more like 2:56.5. This fits in with the split times before and after this point. So, EL G's lap times were: 61.2, 61.0, 54.3 (not 53 stated) and 39.3 for last 300m(52.5 last lap)
That gives split times of 53.5, 59.1,57.9 and 39.5; middle 800m= 1:58!? First lap plus last lap = 1:46. But the middle 2 laps were almost 2 minutes! Coe ran a 3:31 in Stockholm in 81 with first 2 laps of 52.4 and 56.7 (1:49.1) and run the remainder of the race on his own, 25m infront of rest of field. That is incredible endurance! And whatever you say, ask the likes of Watman, Matthews, etc, and they will all tell you that tracks are faster now than in the early 80's

Here is El Guerrouj's pattern: Grand Prix (fast paced): in the lead between 400 to 500 to go. Grand Prix (not as fast): 500 to 600 meter run from home. Major race (early career, like this race): 700 meters to go. Major race (later career): 800 meters to go.
If Coe did make that comment you need to put it in context. Many more ex athletes and commentators have said Coe is the greatest "middle distance runner" ever, the definition of which you and others choose to ignore. You can't be the greatest if you have achieved nothing at 800m.
Don't mean to burst your bubble, but if you look closely, the clock stops in a different place (the wrong place!) at 1200m for some reason. If you look at the previous 2 laps (i.e at 400m and 800m gone) the clock stops at the start line, which is the second "curve" about 4m further on. The 1200m time was thus about 2:56.0, meaning he ran the penultimate curve (from 1100 to 1200m) in about 12.7. Still very impressive!
Lol! Long distance runners obviously put in more miles, but that doesn't mean their training is more difficult. I don't know enough about Kipketer's training, but I know that Coe was capable of running 45 mins for 10 miles, beat Coghlan (5000m World Champ) & McCloud(10000m Olympic silver medallist) over 4miles on 800m training & was capable of running world class 5000m races on no specific training for that event. He was also able to run 45.5 for 400m.
Coe's VO Max was 82 mls/kg/min, one of the highest ever recorded, and this was on about 60 miles a week. But he spent many hours doing other types of training that other athletes neglected or didn't do to the same degree.
I doubt that time & wouldn't recognise it as true unless there was evidence. Anyone could claim great things in training! For me (and many others) Seb Coe is the greatest middle distance runner of all time as he won medals at BOTH distances over a long career & is the only person ever to hold all 4 records from 800m to 1 Mile simultaneously. And this was in the most competitive era, with Ovett, Cram, Aouita, Cruz, Bile around. EL G was not invincible and got beaten twice in the Olympics.
And Coe was not a pure 1500m runner, unlike EL G (for most of his career), but was always a 800m/1500m runner. No one has achieved as much as he did over both distances, with the possible acception of Snell. There aren't many athletes who can claim to be double Olympic champion in their 2nd best event!
So what are you trying to say here!?....no one has dominated the 1500m and the mile like El G did.He won gold on the 5000m too don't forget that,.So plz try not compare Coe to El G. Coe was great for his era, But EL G is the greatest of all times.

"Maybe" the greatest 1500m ever, but not the greatest "middle distance" runner ever! He would have had to have done something over 800m to be even considered for that accolade!
He didn't run the 800m because he probably didn't really want to come up against Kipketer! He also would have wanted to maintain his unbeaten record. I'm sure he could have run close to 1:43. but he didn't have the 400m time to run 1:41.
Yes, I agree. It's probably between Coe and Snell. I think it was more difficult to dominate in Coe's era, and he was further ahead of his contemporaries than Snell at 800m, but then 3 Olympic golds are 3 Olympic golds! Hard one to call.
what kind of bull crap is this!?it was harder to dominate in Coe's Era! lol El guerrouj competed against Morceli, against Lagat against Noah and all of these athletes are better than Coe,Cram and Ovett.
Samassek comprehension not your forte is it! I was discussing with someone else the credentials of Coe and Snell in deciding which of the two was the greatest middle distance (800/1500m) runner of all time. El G isn’t in the conversation for that accolade as he had no form or medals whatsoever over 800m. When I said Coe had more competition in his era I was comparing with Snell and his peers, not El G.
I consider Aouita to be the greatest ever 1500m/5000m runner. But I have to point out a few things! Firstly, he never held the Mile record (as you state he did)His fastest was 3:46.78! So, he held records at 4 distances, the same as Coe, though none of his lasted as long as Coe's 800 or 1000m. Also, he only won gold in major Champs over 1 distance, 5000m, whereas Coe won at 2; 800m & 1500m!
Coe is still the 2nd fastest ever at 800 & 1000, 27 years after he ran them, and in the pre EPO era! If EL G is still the second fastest ever at 1500 & 1mile in 2024, then he might have a better claim to that accolade!
No, traditionally the classic "middle distances" are the 800m, 1500m and 1 Mile. EL G is possibly the greatest 1500m runner of all time, even though most of his titles were basically carefully orchestrated paced runs by his countrymen; which wouldn't have been allowed in previous decades. He did nothing at 800m, despite "claims" that he ran 1:42.7 in training which someone added to Wikipedia and now it would seem is regarded as given!
Where did you get that pearl of wisdom from!? It's commonly agreed that the 800m is the hardest event to train for, as it requires a balance of strength and endurance that is really hard to get right. Why do you think there has been only 9 men to break the WR in the last 70 years!!? 1500m/5000m runners are quite common place now, there have been very few in recent times that were great 800/1500m runners.
I think it is more than that. When you are on your way up, Bronze can be a consolation. However, when you have been at the top of your sport, Bronze is a sign that you are past your prime and on your way down. At that point, Bronze is not a consolation; it is a sign that you are nearing the end of your career.
He trained as hard as any athlete has ever trained, and spent hours each week in the gym and lifting weights, as opposed to just running mile after mile. Where is the evidence that Bekele could run a 1:44 800m? Of course Bekele is one of the greatest athletes of all time, full stop. You really can't compare a great 800m runner to a great 10000m runner anyway & to say that one's training is harder than another without being intimate and privy to both athlete's training schedule is just silly.
Compare Coe's LA win in 84 (3:32.5) to EL G's World title in 03 (3:31.8). Finishing times v. similar, as were the first 2 laps; EL G 58.2, 58.1; Coe 58.9, 58.0. Their last 700m were identical at 1:35.5. But from thereon in, Coe was quicker. Last lap, EL G 53.9, Coe 53.2, last 300m- EL G 40.5, Coe 39.2, 100m- EL G 13.8, Coe 12.7! This shows Coe was speeding up in the closing stages more than EL G off a v. similar pace, meaning he had unused reserves! WR's do not tell everything!
And why didn't you compare it to the world title 99 in Seville won by El G with 3:27:45.wich is the fastest time ever?that is more than 5 second faster than Coe's LA time.
Samassek you can’t compare stats between a 3:27 and a 3:32. Completely different races. For a start El G had a teammate pace him to 800m at the pace El G thrives at.
Sorry. was using a friend's computer, so the previous comment was also mine! You are way off the mark calling me racist, which I see you choose to completely ignore. I think the real reason you deleted my comments was because you disagree with my comments and are unable to argue against them.
There are several reasons EL G ran so many times under 3:30; not least the golden league series, where he could run every week if he wanted to, with his own army of pace makers. This set up just didn't exist in the late 70's and 80's. Also, tracks are faster today, and there was widespread use of EPO in the 90's without a reliable test to catch culprits. It's strange how all those fast times suddenly slowed down in the early '00's!
If you look in most reference books, middle distance is 800m and 1500/Mile. The 2000m & 3000m are rarely run and between middle and long distance. If you want to include them, fine! Coe still broke records at 4 of those distances and EL G only at 3 of them. Coe broke the Mile record 3 times, EL G once, Coe had 2 Olympic golds at 1500m in 2 attempts, EL G 1 in 3 attempts.
800m requires more "specialised" training, in that the most successful athletes at the distance have to have the ability to be a reasonable sprinter but also the endurance to run a world class Mile. Running successfully at 800m in champs is also more difficult as there are so many permutations in an 800m and it is over so quickly, thus there is no room for errors. A great 10,000m runner can make a few mistakes in the course of a race and still have time to get back in to the race.
The subtleties of the english language are obviously beyond you! I never said EL G's times slowed down in the early '00's; I said that athletes' times generally slowed down. If you look at the fastest times in the last 3 or 4 seasons, they are considerably slower than in the mid- late 90's.
Lol! We are talking about a difference of 15-20 years! Of course times will get quicker, due to advances in training, medicine, shoes, tracks, pacing, etc. A run in the 80's would be at least a second faster on today's tracks. With your reasoning then Peter Elliott must be a greater 1500m runner than Herb Elliott, because he ran 3 seconds faster 30 years later!!

Major race (later career): 800 meters to go.

Desesperate Morceli, le fennec qui pue. Well done Hicham le 1500 restera une école Marocaine.
If Coe did make that comment you need to put it in context. Many more ex athletes and commentators have said Coe is the greatest "middle distance runner" ever, the definition of which you and others choose to ignore. You can't be the greatest if you have achieved nothing at 800m.

You should put morceli on tags since he still remains a legend for middle distance.
Reyes estevez grande ¡¡¡ jejejjejeje
1:48 last 800 😳
Funnily, I've just been calculating this too, measured at 1:48.83. I should've looked at the comments first!

Coe's VO Max was 82 mls/kg/min, one of the highest ever recorded, and this was on about 60 miles a week. But he spent many hours doing other types of training that other athletes neglected or didn't do to the same degree.
This is not of the highest recorded
I doubt that time & wouldn't recognise it as true unless there was evidence. Anyone could claim great things in training! For me (and many others) Seb Coe is the greatest middle distance runner of all time as he won medals at BOTH distances over a long career & is the only person ever to hold all 4 records from 800m to 1 Mile simultaneously. And this was in the most competitive era, with Ovett, Cram, Aouita, Cruz, Bile around. EL G was not invincible and got beaten twice in the Olympics.
Doping was high tho during 80s.

'Ess-stee-vis' rhymes with Beavis 😅 he also incorrectly identifies the runner as El Guerrouj at 2:19 smh
Yes, I agree. It's probably between Coe and Snell. I think it was more difficult to dominate in Coe's era, and he was further ahead of his contemporaries than Snell at 800m, but then 3 Olympic golds are 3 Olympic golds! Hard one to call.
what kind of bull crap is this!?it was harder to dominate in Coe's Era! lol
El guerrouj competed against Morceli, against Lagat against Noah and all of these athletes are better than Coe,Cram and Ovett.
This race proved that El G was the greatest. He should have won the golden medal and not Morceli.

Grande
Where did you get that pearl of wisdom from!? It's commonly agreed that the 800m is the hardest event to train for, as it requires a balance of strength and endurance that is really hard to get right. Why do you think there has been only 9 men to break the WR in the last 70 years!!? 1500m/5000m runners are quite common place now, there have been very few in recent times that were great 800/1500m runners.
Morceli didn’t even want the bronze. He gave it away
😀
I think it is more than that. When you are on your way up, Bronze can be a consolation. However, when you have been at the top of your sport, Bronze is a sign that you are past your prime and on your way down. At that point, Bronze is not a consolation; it is a sign that you are nearing the end of your career.
@@daeuri Very wise words !
@tiziouzou2000 : No, El guerrouj is the best...
Morceli could not find away to trip Hicham, his over since Atlanta
Look at the guy who won the bronze, so awesome!
koolkurd82 not even close to El G, El g is one of the best and rare athletes ever, thanks El g for eveything thanks for being simply the best

Sorry! Made a few typo errors in previous comment! Meant to say that Aouita and EL G were the greatest ever 1500/5000m!
Coe broke the Mile record 3 times, EL G once, Coe had 2 Olympic golds at 1500m in 2 attempts, EL G 1 in 3 attempts.
el gherrouj y cacho los mejores
800m requires more "specialised" training, in that the most successful athletes at the distance have to have the ability to be a reasonable sprinter but also the endurance to run a world class Mile. Running successfully at 800m in champs is also more difficult as there are so many permutations in an 800m and it is over so quickly, thus there is no room for errors. A great 10,000m runner can make a few mistakes in the course of a race and still have time to get back in to the race.
Surely they both are.

The subtleties of the english language are obviously beyond you! I never said EL G's times slowed down in the early '00's; I said that athletes' times generally slowed down. If you look at the fastest times in the last 3 or 4 seasons, they are considerably slower than in the mid- late 90's.
Not sure where you saw them, but I would think they mean Championship Record and Meet(ing) Record!
Morseli is was and allways will be the champ,
Oh, and Snell didn't ever hold the 1500m WR record; it was the 800m, 880yds and the Mile!
