Noah Ngeny played Volleyball during his school years and didn't take up running until he was 17 yr. old in 1996 and by the time he was 18 yr.old in 1997, he set the World Jr. Records for the mile in 3:50.4 and 3:32 for the 1500 m. And in 1999 he ran 3:43.4 in the mile & 3:27 in the 1500 m at the age of 20. And he beat El Guerroui in the 2000 Olympics in the 1500 m and his time of 3:32.1 broke Seb Coe's Olympic 1500 meter record. Not too shabby for a guy that didn't take up running until he was 17. Noah's rapid progression over a 4 year period in which he had never run competitively, to winning a Gold Medal in the Olympics and running the 2nd fastest mile time of All-time, points to EPO!
I've always watched this race with my focus being on HEG, but I never had any idea that Noah also broke the world record in second place. AND AT 20 YEARS OLD. Reminds me of Alan Webb at the Prefontaine Classics when he chased down the HEG. The man showed heart and pure will.
even 7 minutes per mile is not sufficient for me I take usually 8 minutes to complete a mile. this is really amazing love you Moroccan brother from the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
Ran the mile at a high school distric meet. (1991) Fell at the start and had to make up 50 meters on the leaders. By last lap started kicking last 300 m to pull in first with 200 meters to go. Locked up with 20 m left and lost by seconds. Still humbled by the experience. This feat by EL G is just astonishing! Great Inspiration to never give up and you' ll probably never see this happen again in your lifetime.

This is just amazing. Look how tired the pace makers are and Hitcham still keeps going. Right now im trying to do a 4 minute mile it is hard as hell. These guys are truely amazing.
I am destined to beat this record. Right now I am 15 and I have been running all my life. It's a passion. My fastest mile was 4:13 and my average is about 4:25. I plan to keep trying. I am the fastest person that I personally know, and I am very motivated to beat this world record.
This is definitely one of the great races. Ngeny pushed El Guerrouj all the way. You only rarely see that in a world record attempt over those distances that two athletes are fighting for it at the finish.
Great sportsmanship, both Hicham and Niane were racing to the finish line only a couple seconds ago and immediately after they cross they celebrate right after they were competing
Noah Ngeny made this race! The WR doesn't happen without his push, Gerrouj needed a challenge and Ngeny stepped up. This is, perhaps, the greatest foot race of all time.
Perfectly even halves (1:51.58 and 1:51.55)... a fantastic pacemaking job... a competitor chasing him all the way to the line... and a record that has stood for over a decade... could Hicham el Guerrouj have run the perfect mile?
Its funny how i get all these questions about why I love running and enjoy track so much. I cant really explain it, but it's just so exciting and eventful. All the lead changes, all the adjustments, all the thoughts you have while you race. Every second of the events that i do (mile, 2mile, 800) is packed with adrenaline and anticipation. Not one dull moment during the race. Im an average runner 4:55mile, 2:10 800, and 11:00 2mile. I always finish in the middle, but i enjoy everysingle bitof it
Nobody even knows the second place finisher even though he(Nayid) also broke the former mile WR. It was a very tight race at the end, it could have gone either way, but all of the glory went to El Guerrouj.

I don't think so. In a straight line you kind of lose sense of pace and the boredom might get to you mentally, so whatever time you'd shave from not having to go around the turn you'd probably lose due to mental factors.
Which is why you focus on the amount of energy you're outputting and how fast the guy in front of you's going. The point's not to not get bored, it's to finish strong

23 years and still going!
My fastest mile is 1/186,282 of a second. I am a photon.
danny photon
I am a neutrino. They thought I ran 4 laps in -0.0001200304 seconds, but it turned out I just hadn't moved.
Stfu
That's is in any massy observer's time. In your own time, you ran the mile in exactly 0 second.
His stride is beautiful!
He becomes one with the earth and just glides!
Legend of a runner , he was always great to watch in a race👍
Wow, a great finish, and unbroken 18 years later!
This will forever be my ❤️ Passion. They both (Hicham El Guerrouj and Noah Ngeny) are forever in my hearts as a Distance runner.
Great job by El Guerrouj, Ngeny, and the two pacemakers! World Record would not have been possible without all of their efforts!
I'm 15 and its preseason for track and I ran my pr today of 5:17. I wanna break 5 this season. El Guerrouj and all the other runners in this race are absolutely incredible
Dropped it down to 4:53 :D
Josh Torres thats pretty fast man keep up the hard work =)
You got it man I ran a 5:04 at end of sophomore year last year and two weeks ago I ran a 4:35 mile anything possible with hard work keep it up
my friends a freshman and his mile time is 4:53!
+Ray Lopez thanks for telling me that man. Your improvement is awesome keep up the good work man and I'll work hard too
Hicham le grand!!!
The greatest miler of alltime;what a race, what an amazing runner!
The mile record is staying in North Africa!
The mile record is staying in Morocco
I had. 4:38 time in the mile , my school didn’t have a track program, I did not know all the options to improve, speed work etc . I played basketball 4 years
Thank you Hicham for this amazing performance 🇲🇦🇲🇦🇲🇦
To be honest, I loved the hugs those runners gave each other at the end of the video most excellently.
Great performance by Hicham El Guerrouj, what an athlete !!
هشام وعويطة والسكاح وبوطيب ...ابطال من ذهب بصراحة المغرب اليوم يفتقر لهؤلاء الابطال
I knew who set the new WR , but didn't know the drama at the finish . Outstanding performance by both runners ! !
3:43.13... wow, as a former High School miler it makes me sick just thinking about how amazing that is. And sick for the guy who's name no one knows who also broke 3:44 and the world record but came in second. Greatest mile race maybe in history.
And he beat
El Guerroui in the 2000 Olympics in the 1500 m and his time of 3:32.1 broke Seb Coe's Olympic 1500 meter record.
When this video was uploaded I wasn’t born for 3 more years. I didn’t even know TH-cam was around this long
Imagine running 3:52.96, and finishing 11th. That's what Kevin Sullivan did in this race.
One of the great world records. What a beautiful mover he was.
He ran 59 seconds faster than my PR.
14years ago after this race video has been uploaded. I came back to watch it on youtube in the year 2020
absolutely amazing, my inspiration throughout my running career.
I can't think of anything scarier than an angry olympian running after you because you stole their french fry
thats a very specific fear you have
Honestly, I reckon I could take a miler in a fist fight.
@@0ffspringfan k
Just don't run
@@0ffspringfan dunno, if he can box you have a long ass fight in your hands. Hope your stamina is up
Ran the mile at a high school distric meet. (1991) Fell at the start and had to make up 50 meters on the leaders. By last lap started kicking last 300 m to pull in first with 200 meters to go. Locked up with 20 m left and lost by seconds. Still humbled by the experience. This feat by EL G is just astonishing! Great Inspiration to never give up and you' ll probably never see this happen again in your lifetime.
the hug at the end sayed it all . it was thanks to the pacers especially the guy who kept putting pressure on elgarouj that he broke this record .the way elgarouj run is just perfect , nothing goes to waste , so smooth as if he was a gazelle ,very efficient .
This is just amazing. Look how tired the pace makers are and Hitcham still keeps going.
Right now im trying to do a 4 minute mile it is hard as hell. These guys are truely amazing.
الرقم الصعب الاسطوره هشام الكروج من المفترض ان يقوم الكبتن هشام بتدريب العدائين المغاربه وغيرهم من المتميزين العرب .
Superhumans very awesome to watch thanks for posting this ❤
It's amazing how he beat a record over a full second, surely he trained incredibly hard I can't even imagine it
That was AWESOME. I love how they both broke the previous world record, I was kind of cheering for the underdog at the end there.
Everyone mentions El Guerrouj but you gotta hand it to Nyan also. Two people breaking the WR at the same time is insane.
Are you kidding?! I can't even run half a mile in that time. Bravo to these guys, they simply have a natural gift!!
What a great gesture and sportsmanship from the athletes who pulled El guerrouj at the end and hugged him ♥️
I never competed in the mile, but Hicham sure did an awesome job.
I consider anything below 8 minutes to be a good mile for me.... The dedication shown by these runners is awesome.
STILL STANDING EVEN TODAY... Here after prefontaine classic 2021... Good job Ingebrigtsen!
Great race , thank for share
Wow... relax and effective strides and running posture, just like those in the textbook
El G is phenomenal, an absolute legend!
Up until now Morocco hasn't found a replacement for Hisham El gerrouj.
3 min 26 :00
the world has been running for 24 years
to beat it is not unitile
Run baby 🙂
I am destined to beat this record. Right now I am 15 and I have been running all my life. It's a passion. My fastest mile was 4:13 and my average is about 4:25. I plan to keep trying. I am the fastest person that I personally know, and I am very motivated to beat this world record.
people sometimes forget a mile is not 1600 meters. It is over 1609 meters
Everyone knows it's just widely excepted that that is a mile for some reaosn
This is definitely one of the great races. Ngeny pushed El Guerrouj all the way. You only rarely see that in a world record attempt over those distances that two athletes are fighting for it at the finish.
Great sportsmanship, both Hicham and Niane were racing to the finish line only a couple seconds ago and immediately after they cross they celebrate right after they were competing
Noah Ngeny made this race! The WR doesn't happen without his push, Gerrouj needed a challenge and Ngeny stepped up. This is, perhaps, the greatest foot race of all time.
I'm 6 and my time is 4:20 but it would be faster if I had legs
You might break even faster if you had a brain. 🙄
C Y? It’s a joke... who the the one with the brain now dumbo
Perfectly even halves (1:51.58 and 1:51.55)... a fantastic pacemaking job... a competitor chasing him all the way to the line... and a record that has stood for over a decade... could Hicham el Guerrouj have run the perfect mile?
Absolutely incredible
And here I am barely getting a 7 min mile lmao
MENA SMITH i want a dual like for both comments.
Feeling brah...
Lol I just ran my first mike race (7th grade) and my time was 7:38
@@sabrinasnauffer708 You should start training lmao when I was in 7th grade I got 6:34 as my fastest mile.
Krypto oh god no I’m never again running track again that season was hell😂7th grade was wild I really thought I could be a runner
@@sabrinasnauffer708 Lmao I mean you can't just give up that hope, worked out pretty well for me, I'm running sub 5's and I'm graduating 8th grade this year. Also ran my second LA Marathon a few weeks back too.
Thank you Hicham 🇲🇦👏💐
What an amazing race
hello from 2016
Amazing!
Jakob Ingebrigsten punching the air rn
Nice to hear announcers that actually know and are interested in the event
Someone answer, would it be easier if the mile was run in a perfectly straight line instead of an oval?
I don't think so. In a straight line you kind of lose sense of pace and the boredom might get to you mentally, so whatever time you'd shave from not having to go around the turn you'd probably lose due to mental factors.
I dont think world class runners will get bored during a race.
Which is why you focus on the amount of energy you're outputting and how fast the guy in front of you's going. The point's not to not get bored, it's to finish strong
Absolutely especially if its downhill
Yes definitely much faster, esp for 200m, 300m, 400m straight.
Hicham the greatest ever !
The hardest event on the track! Takes guts, determination, and believing in yourself!
Amazing performances.
it's not very common to find a white kenyan
loool😂😂
actually he is moroccan
Chris Froome :D
he is moroccain from المغرب
he is african actually
I commented on this video back in like 2012? And I can’t find it anymore :(
The fact that there’s almost no people at the stadium to witness that great race blows my mind!
Wonder if anyone will ever beat this time. It’s hard to fathom. This run was just pure legend.
none untile now the best time is 3.46 so far a way from it haha no one is beating this shit ever
I haven't even been born yet, and I ran a 1:24 yesterday while having 5 stress fractures and a 1 year vacation from running.
+snowshredder102 pro tip: drop the vacation and you will break 1 minute
You guys are dumb.
+Janessa Ulug Glad you like it :)
snowshredder102 aww, how cute, a baby wants to show off how fast he ran the ten meter dash Aawww
you guys are all yapping about how some one will break this record. It is what it is. My Question is how the heck can some EG run so damn hard and then just walk it off. Grabbing bunch of flowers and hugging others and not even seem out of breath.
+Jtadpoll1978 For a highly trained elite athlete it is this way. Your fastest day is the easiest. It is strange because on your fastest day you always think "I could have gone even faster this day."
Deathfromabove Someone will beat it and do the same thing.
Most likely he is on a lot of peds. He ran this time when there wasn't a test for epo so this record will likely stand forever.
the fact that Hicham El Guerrouj's record hasn't been broken since 1998 is freakin AMAZING!
it won't be broken lol, humanly impossible
I never ran in high school with just 3 years in collegiate competitive running I managed to get a time of 4:30 estimated mile time, I got 4:11 in a 1500m race. I did a actual mile time trial at 4:36.9 in 2017, it did take me almost one year of solid training to break the 5 minute mile. I originally was only able to run a 6:01 mile in the beginning of 2015. This incredible video is what inspired me to actually become better than what I had accomplished before in such a short period of time.
