      Assuming they’re using H265 for the compression of UHD streaming, and since the average 4K UHD movie with Dolby Atmos is about 60-70Gb, and H265 compresses that down to about 3-5Gb on average… I’d say quite a long time still.

    No lossless TrueHD or DTS-X passthrough from a Plex server for example... Big no for my use case scenario, Shield TV still uncontested

    • @kurtdha
      @kurtdha ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not to mention shield has better upscaling and the ability to sideload any app you could ever want. I use quite a few sideloaded apps on my shield so that’s the deal breaker for me since I can’t use them on an Apple TV. That’s why I was surprised to hear him say this was the best streaming box out there. Maybe he hasn’t heard of the shield?

    • @BookClubDisaster
      @BookClubDisaster ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know why so many people care. I have a Blu Ray player. Seems so much simpler than Plex. Until streaming services adopt lossless audio (and when is that happening?) it seems like a very niche thing and that's probably why Apple and Roku and Amazon don't seem to be bothering with it.

    • @kurtdha
      @kurtdha ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BookClubDisaster can your blu ray player play mkv and other high quality video files from a PC? Honest question. If it can, then the benefit is that people don’t need to buy a separate piece of hardware to play their high quality video files, they can just download a free piece of software that does everything they need.

    • @BookClubDisaster

    • @kurtdha
      @kurtdha ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BookClubDisaster ok so to explain what he’s talking about is people have these really large libraries of high quality video files on hard drives such as blu ray video files because they like the higher quality video as well as audio streams like Dolby TrueHD. With the shield, they can stream these files to their home entertainment system and get the highest quality audio available. The shield is the only streaming device that can do that right now.

The only big bummer is the fact that Siri cannot search or tune into channels on TH-cam TV, even though I've listed this service as my TV source. Supposedly this feature does work with Hulu and Sling, or at least that is what others say on forums. I was able to change channels with my voice on TH-cam TV with Fire TV via Alexa. I’m sorry, but I feel you don’t get, what is going on there. Yes, the display going black is annoying, but this has to happen, due to switching over the signal to another refresh rate of the display. And with the receiver as yet another device in between, you have 3 devices to sync up for the new framerate and that will naturally take some time. This is not an issue with the Apple TV, but a necessary thing happening.

    • @Andru
      @Andru  ปีที่แล้ว

      It isn’t necessary, as QMS VRR aims to fix the issue. It does the same if the Apple TV is plugged directly into the TV with no receiver. I had a 30 minute conversation with both Apple and LG about this very issue and the fix that is coming. What makes you think I didn’t understand it?

    I would love to be able to download my favorite movies in Atmos and 4K for backup incase there’s no network so I can still watch stuff. I have the last model and I’m kinda disappointed in the game store too. I think this thing can run a lot more games but people aren’t moving them to the platform. I’d love to play some of the games from my iPad on my tv with the gaming controller.
    I don’t hate the old remote and it turns my tv and theater on and off by way of sleep and pressing the button next to menu but I hate that it’s all over the place when scrolling TH-cam sometimes or movies. I have to keep going out and back into the movie selection because it gets stuck on one side or the other and I can’t scroll to the right or left in movies.
    But seriously even the old 4K works well now that it has Atmos. It’s all we use. We have thousands of movies on iTunes so we use it full time for our entertainment.

    Not sure it's worth the upgrade for me yet although it's not all that much money for an Apple product. I have the last gen in my living room and the prior 4k gen in my bedroom and I bought the additional new style remote for the bedroom too. The only annoying thing the current gen does is when I first turn it on it goes to a black screen after a few seconds to switch to Dolby Vision. Would the new model still do that?

    • @Andru

      You can store games on it. For example, NBA 2K23 that I showed in this video is about 8.5GB in size, so just that single app wouldn't fit on any of those devices you mentioned at 8GB.

    Kind of BS they removed the Ethernet port. That is fully meant to push people to the more expensive model when the port itself probably costs pennies.
    Anyone wanting the best quality and no risk of network slow down will want that option.
    I guess the pricing correction makes it a little more acceptable. Still, removing Ethernet connection is silly.

    • @Andru
      @Andru  ปีที่แล้ว

      If I had to wager a guess, I bet over 85% of people use their Apple TV on Wi-Fi, and only those "in the know" use Ethernet like you and I. But hey, like you said, it's $70 cheaper now for 64GB but you lose the port, and you can have it for just $20 more than base...so in that respect I agree it's silly, but also glad it's a minimal cost to get it (I wouldn't have been surprised if it was a $50 jump to 128GB!)

But after initial setup, it’s all the same, no iPhone required.
