  • The front rims needed cleaned up for the Purple Oliver 1850 project. I use electrolysis to remove rust on most of my restoration projects, so I thought I'd show you how I do it.

    I really like using electrolysis for rust removal, as well.
    I used to use sacrificial strips of steel, until I was given a bunch of carbon arc gouging rods. I think they're made from graphite. All the conduction, with none of the mess. Keeps the water fairly clean.

    Grandma used to make her own lye by putting wood ashes in a vee trough and running water down thru the ashes and catching the lye. Lye soap was great for washing close and dirty kids. I use an old power chair charger, Arm & Hammer washing soap, a bunch of rebar anodes welded to a rod shaped to my tank, put the parts in and when I think about it a few days later I go pull it out. Wait too long and the water is all gone. My wife used to get carboys of phosphoric acid and I used some of it to de-rust items. Evapo-Rust is what the big boys are all pushing now. Use a rust converter on the bare metal after removing most of the rust. It converts rust into a black oxide that you can paint over. It stops the rust holes in your old car and trucks if you can spray or brush it over all of the rusted part.

    Nice work. I belong to a group on FB called Electrolysis Tank Builders. The pros there all use stainless steel for their sacrificial anodes. I like using old brake rotors and I use the Arm and Hammer Super Washing Soda from Walmart.

    Chris as a Licensed water operator that works in the state of Florida (i live in Georgia) i can say that the changes in dosage that the hackers made could definitely have caused injuries to those who drank it. Luckily the operator caught the intrusion quickly. Sodium Hydroxide is used to raise the pH of the water and is super alkaline with a pH of somewhere around 12. The hacker raised the dosage about ten times the normal rate. It would have basically turned the potable water into alkaline water which could burn the inside of someone's mouth and esophagus. I have had about ten meetings or calls on this since it occurred.

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, I was glad to hear about someone being on top of things, I hope that operator got some serious praise and a raise. I guess my point was that it's not going to cause cancer or some other long term illness if used properly.

      @@ThatOliverGuyChris Yea i understood your point and didn't want or mean to seem like i was getting on you. It has opened a bunch of eyes across the country to water safety again. In the right quantities it is perfectly safe. We used use it at one of the facilities i manage but stopped about 20 years ago. We pumped about 8,000 gallons a year into our water. 30 Gallons a day. Just don't get it on your skin. I got a couple of scars from it. It just keeps burning till you pour some vinegar on it.

      No worries. Hackers are always looking for another way. I remember reading about a Vegas casino got ripped off by hackers through their aquarium. The computer controls for the aquarium were considered a low security risk, so they hacked that, and then from there they were on the network and could do whatever they wanted.

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I put dry fertilizer augers in for a friend. It cleaned up the outside really well, I don't know if it freed them up. It did show me that deere augers were seveal pieces, because some parts weren't electrically connected due to the rust. First time I pulled it out the center shaft and one of the augers had cleaned up, the rest hadn't chaned at all. I had to run a wire to each section and put it back in to get the rest.
