Catch a Fire is criminally underrated compared to other Marley albums. Tosh, Bunny Wailer, and Bob were so sympatico with each other along with Aston and Carlton Barrett. 400 Years is another classic!
My favorite Marley/Wailers album definitely. I like the way it was recorded too. That original Wailers sound with Bunny and Peter was hard to beat. There’s a couple good live shows released from that era. Talkin’ Blues (the album) and the Burnin’ deluxe edition has Live at Leeds Polytechnic in 1973. Guessing it’s the same tour as this performance from the BBC.
This song… This Version of this song.. Is ABSOLUTELY KILLER!! I watch that old grey whistle version multiple times a week. Nothing about it gets old.. it’s as mesmerizing every single mf time. The depth of Bobs vocals.. the harmonies.. All the nuances happening, and the Complete FLAWLESSNESS of the Performance! It’s AIR TIGHT from beginning to end. Absolute goats! Pure Magic ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨ I’ll probably sing some Bob soon and post. Thanks for this video, your boy sent you the track of tracks 🙌🏽
Hands down one of the best vocal arrangements of all time. The studio version and later live guitar solos are on a whole other level as well. This song reigns supreme with fire and fury.
I was lucky to catch the band twice, but in the post Tosh and Bunny Wailer incarnation, with Marcia Griffiths,Judy Mowatt, and Rita Marley (The I-Threes) on vocals. THE Rock solid groove. And Marley made every soul feel like they were in the presence of a prophet. And that there was hope.
What about the BARRETT Brothers, the ULTIMATE Bass & Drum Geniuses... so forgotten but never matched or surpassed in this genre. They were Reggae Funk Soul Groovers for which some of us will be forever in debt. Tosh, Bob and all the gang are Legends. Jah Lives On ! :D
@@wimbrinkman6995Well you're partly right. Robbie Shakespeare played on and conceived the bassline for Concrete Jungle. Sly Dunbar wasn't involved on this recording. Their successful partnership was actually launched on their debut performance while providing the riddims for the Classic Mighty Diamonds album Right Time (1976)

This guys were miles ahead. Jamaican recording technics were second to none. Just listen to BMW albums, the clarity, definition, the quality. Pure diamonds. Iven for todays standards.
Dear Sir I just love your joy in this song. I have always felt that way about these gray whistle recordings. Utterly simple, utter virtuosity. You can really hear it in these more simple set ups. And like you say, so much going on with the back up vocals in counter rhythm to the lead vocals, all the while playing in perfect time. Oh my. Of course it goes without saying fantastic songwriting and singing also. Thank you for an education in Subtlety…
I absolutely love the breakdown in this song. The only thing with doing the live version is that it absolutely misses the amazing guitar solo on the studio album.
@@yaznaz5340 I have been telling anyone willing to listen that it is THE greatest live album by ANY artist of ANY genre, EVER! That album's version of this song just awakens my soul EVERY TIME!
Seeing you talk about this song as passionately as I feel about it and the fact that you're also able to dissect it musically gave me a great desire to get back to learning music and the guitar. I adore music, but would love to also have this understanding that i totally lack. I'll get back to it eventually. Great video man
Dude! Love your enthusiasm for this. And what a session that was. The Old Grey Whistle Test was legendary in the 70s. Nowhere to run and nowhere to hide. Just raw live takes, recorded for posterity.
Having to blink and rub your eye at 12:29 because the clavichord sounds so good you've weirdly started tearing up. Not many tracks get that reaction from me but this one does.
Doing sports with some roots reggae or any kind of metal, is just dopamine inducing. I feel you when u said u like to ski listening to either of them And my favourite version of Concrete Jungle is the performance live at Santa Barbara County bowl. I've been listening to that for 20 years, and can still enjoy it like it is my first time hearing it
It was a session musician who did the guitar solo on this There was a great bit bout it on the classic albums ep on this album when he came out of the both after recoding it he said Bob Marley just smiled and handed him a big spliff.
Probably my most favored Wailers song. At least since I got 'Catch a Fire - Deluxe Edition' with one CD in the original Jamaican mix version, the other remixed in England and released for the world. The original one so much better.
Also mine. I remember listening to this song in my room in 1973. "Catch a Fire" was my first album with BMW. It was the Zippo lighter version, which I still have among about 10 other BMW albums.
Being raised in the UK I remember The Old Grey Whistle Test well. I remember this Bob and the Wailers performance. Wasn't sure who or what I was watching at the time as they had just broken through, buy I knew they were something special. I had always been into Ska, Rocksteady and Reggae, buy they were something really different. Here I am 51 years later and this song still moves me to my very core. It was acknowledged by Bunny and obvious when watching Peter that this isn’t live. The E- turnaround, for example, isn’t played by Peter or Bunny, which is a good indication. Also, those lead lines were played via overdubs by Wayne Perkins at the suggestion of Chris Blackwell.
Mike I must say your analysis of Concrete Jungle is truly marvellous as I have also been moved by the varied arrangements of this song and to listen to it with quality head phones is just mind blowing - truly a great song 💯⛷

This isn't a live recording. It's the studio version. They sang over the track for the show. Familyman talks in his book about how he would speed up the tape to give it a special sound. That's why it's a little sharp. I don't know why the guitar solo was removed and a clavi was overdubbed. You can hear it in the beginning of the track.
You should have used the studio version of the album " Catch A Fire " with the very nice and sweet guitar solo by Wayne Perkins ( probably with a Les Paul ) and NOT this live version ( very similar tho ) with the organ solo !!?? For a guitar teacher that would be more interesting and also for us ... This live version was recorded on T.V in the U.K around 1973 before the release of the album " Catch A Fire " that same year ... We can see Bob Marley playing with a Strat here , maybe before starting using his Les Paul Studio that we see from '74 until his death in 1981 !
I've heard that old analog recordings made on tape reels tend to be out of pitch past the middle of the reel due to the difference in speed that happens as the tape passes through. CD's used to have designations like "AD" "ADAD" to indicate if the material was taken from analog to digital and/or how many times. That's why the keyboards are also off pitch. Something a radio DJ told me years ago.
Donnie and I both studied with the same teacher...the namesake for Bradfield's Martini. I haven't see him in like 20 years. If you read this, I hope you're well, D!
