  • In this video tutorial, I will show you how to make ambient and noise soundscapes with the Korg microKORG vocoder feature. These textures, drones, and noise walls can hold their own for recording or add to your overall composition. Experiment!

    i have plugged my guitar into before.. some very jangly shoegazy stuff you can do.. i can't believe i didn't think of this and i never knew about the latch feature to grab a section of sound and loop it.. 12 years later i am still learning about more this little guy can do!

    I’ve had my Microkorg for about 9 years and still don’t know how to use it right,I just know it’s potential.I’m not really a direction manual type of guy because I’ve had so many synths in my life,I just figure them out,but the Microkorg is not the everyday synth by any means.To this day it still holds the top spot in its category.Thank you for your videos,as I even have trouble getting my voice to even enter the MK’s “brain.”THANX 4 your videos and I’ll continue looking you up for more help…Great job!

      Yeah I can't really be 4rsed to read through the manual. Maybe here and there just to figure out how to do something but I just won't take the information it reading through the manual.

    I love all your videos! I've had a microkorg for about a year and a half now and your videos have been the most accessible way to get the sounds that I've been looking for. I really enjoy the ambient shoe-gazey side of synthesis. Unfortunately I don't have anything to suggest right now, but keep it up and keep putting out videos!

      Thank you so much! I recorded some guitar loops and other microKORG sounds on this tape in a very similar manner. It's the gift that keeps on giving! I might make a video showing how I completely make these sounds too. You should be able to find an old tape recorder at a thrift shop or online for a pretty reasonable price.

    Hey, nice videos. I'm mainly a guitar player and don't know much (if anything) about synths. I've been creating drone/ambient type textures using either a guitar or octave mandolin and really DIYing it by manipulating the sounds through Audacity.
    This looks really cool, and I'm very tempted to purchase a Microkorg -for this and other features. I have a couple of questions though:
    When you create these sounds can you save them as patches on a memory bank? Like, can you sample the sounds from the cassette recorder or does it have to be connected every time?
    Also,can the Microkorg be configured to use as a midi controller?

    • @bigbasil1908
      @bigbasil1908 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is 5 years late but no, you can't use the microkorg to sample. But obviously you can record whatever sounds you can create or sample them with a sampler.

    How do I plug the vocoder in the synth with the cable I that comes with it? What does it go in? Do I need an aux to 3.5 or can it go direct in the condenser slot?

    Ok, I did it, I connected the snare output of my drumbrute to the microKorg and tweaked the channel volumes and the gate. The result sounds dubby. Maybe I get a nice surrounding beat and bass to this, then I'm gonna upload it to my channel.

    Daniel, watched one of your vids on the MK, decided to dig my old MK out. We've recently moved to a new house, so studio is in boxes, but I've dug out about 10 items and have a little jamming setup that I'm loving, recording to reel to reel. So got the MK into the mix, and came up with some really inspired stuff. Thanks for your vids man, keep it going. And it is Form - Ant

      So more videos bud, we need em. Someone sarcastically said the other day, "Yeah, like we need more videos about the MicroKorg on TH-cam!" Well, yeah, we do need more videos about the MicroKorg. I dig and dig (I like watching vids about gear that I already have, it gives you GAS, but GAS for gear you already have, so you jump on and use gear that you've already got rather than pining for high priced gear you don't have) but there aren't really that many vids about the MicroKorg, and none as good as yours. Anyway, more vids man!

    Wait a minute, so basically you are just taking the white noise from the cassette and using that to build chords out of? Or had you already recorded some synth or pad sounds in the cassette, then you're just running it back through the vocoder to play chords out of?

    • @DanielKastner
      @DanielKastner  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think if you understand some basic synthesizer ideas, you can go a long way with the microKORG. If you are new, other synths may be easier to learn. I'm trying to make more videos so this thing doesn't seem so hard to dig into. Because I don't think it is. Anything you'd like to see or know?

    • @DJRY360
      @DJRY360 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      it was my first synth and i played presets for a long time before i realized what it could really do.. now that i know my way around it i can program it as quickly as any other of my synths.. if you want more control out of an interface check out the ms2000.. it is like the sibling of the microkorg.. some subtle differences but same synth engines.. in fact using the computer software you can actually load ms2000 patches onto the microkorg.. i found the patches online somewhere

    • @alphanumeric1529
      @alphanumeric1529 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Luigi, the MK isn't hard to use at all. At first, its like hey there are no knobs, how are you supposed to do this. But once you start editing through the matrix, two knobs on left, 5 across the top, you'll be able to program very quickly, seriously. BUT right now, we are in the most fruitful period of synth production. There are more choices than there have ever been. For many years I recommended the MK to a lot of people. At the used price, it was a real bargain. But now you can get knobby actual analog monosynths, and for a little more, analog polys... which is incredible. Honestly, totally crazy, for the past 20 years there were NO real options, now there are so many. I'd check out Korg's analog synths, Behringer's analog synths (more are coming to market this year) and Arturia's analog synths. I personally don't get inspired by arturia's synths, but still, it is an option.
      So, I don't think the MK is that great of a buy, right now. If you already have it, it is a great tool to use, and Daniel's videos show just how useful it can be. If you see it for a hundred, go for it! But even at $200 (American) I think it is too much, you can get analog synths for that. You could get an korg analog poly, KEYS, and an analog drum machine Korg BEATS for $200, and each of those have sequencers... Crazy times.

    I've got a buncha n00b questions for you (forgive misused or ambiguous terminology here, doing the best I can):
    1) The formant hold... why do you turn off the line-in audio instead of pushing the formant button again? Does the formant capture the silence? Then does it just loop? Or does it distill all the info it received before you cut the line-in into one sound?
    2) What audio info is the vocoder (or is it the formant? I'm not clear on who is doing what here) grabbing? Is it any tonal/melodic/note stuff? Or amount of noise? Or just volume/rhythm oscillations? I.e. if you're running a field recording of... I dunno, the Aka Pygmie children singing (a la End of the World)... into the korg... is it taking the melody? the rhythm? a bunch of stuff and flattening it? In my limited playing around with this, it seems the 'textural' recordings, not of melody but of a note breathing in and out, for example, translate the best - that can give you a kind of Basinski tape decay sound...
    3. I'm assuming the vocoder presets are just like the others in that you can patch them with your own tweaks? Are you using the original korg preset in this vid? Or a patched one?
    4. You use the term 'latch' a couple times in your videos. I see that as a setting for the arpegg. Does it work essentially like a looper? (I haven't even scratched the surface of the arpegg functions yet)
    Thanks a ton for your channel!
