A Tale of Tragedy on the River

  • This time shift shows the River Witham at Washingborough, 3 miles East of Lincoln. The old photo shows some ladies using the long gone chain ferry boat c1910, with Washingborough railway station behind them. The station closed in 1940, but part of the building remains now as a private house.
However, the real story here is the tragedy that occurred in September 1916 during WW1. On the night of the 23rd a German zeppelin crossed the Lincolnshire coast intent on bombing Lincoln. Luckily it dropped it's bombs early near Washingborough, causing minimal damage. Some say that a train driver saved the day by stopping under a bridge, when he thought the zeppelin pilot was using the train to lead him to Lincoln, others say they were distracted by lights from a bus. But anyway, the following morning many local people flocked to the area to see the bomb craters, and maybe pick up some shrapnel to take home as souvenirs. Unfortunately too many crowded onto the little ferry and it capsized, trapping several underneath and drowning them.

Yes it is weird, I think a lot of viewers don't see the thumbs, even videos with over a thousand views rarely have more than 20 likes. Some viewers never see the descriptions under the videos either, which is clear from comments on Facebook when I post the links, and I even reckon some people don't realise the link leads to a video, they think it is just a photo posted on Facebook. I assume it is a result of my current audience being mainly elderly Facebook users :)

@@lightanddreamsphotography7140 The problem is people have time to have a quick look and often do not feel they have the time for a video. Must admit I pass many videos, but I do like yours Light and Dreams Pghotography. We seem to live in a very busy world. We must stop and smell the daisies.

@@lindagrocock3102 Yes it is interesting trying to work out how long to make videos without putting people off watching them. Generally a single time shift is about 30 seconds, but if I combine more photos they can get over a minute long. I've often thought about doing more compilation type videos, for instance all the railway ones together, or all the Stonebow ones etc. But I don't know if people are more or less likely to watch them if I do that.
