My brother lived in Haworth for a while, so I was lucky enough to stay on occasion. I burst into tears the first time I walked into the dining room at the Parsonage, I felt so overwhelmed. 'Genius' is an over-used word, but the level of genius in this strange family was astonishing.
I'm writing a book where my heroine does a pilgrimage to Haworth, but can't go into the museum, likewise, afraid of being overwhelmed -- and of not abiding the other tourists. . . .
Unbelievably well made: the research and story were fascinatingly interesting, the scenes beautifully filmed, and the narration style and delivery absolutely perfect, very enjoyable to watch. Far and above way better than anything on tv.

A beautiful and sensitive video of the Brontë family’s home and surrounds. Like many people, we had to study their books at school, here in Australia. I found their books thrilling, yet the authors lives were so sad, dying so young as they did. Thank you for this tribute to their lives, their village and the moors they loved.

Oh, this was so so good… I truly appreciate the time and the details that you included to make this wonderful… I do have to add though that, although the events of their lives seemed tragic and were, a part that is missing from this is their deep faith. The books have their faith in God as Christians running all through them, and I believe that the father, who saw so much pain, took refuge in the Lord to bring him through his life.
I'm a yank, and didn't know much about the Bronte sisters.Then saw the film Emily just last night, so I came here. I'd like to say well done, and thank you for this great, thorough, and educational day trip back into time, to get a real feel for the sisters creative genius.

One can only imagine the effects of their deaths on Patrick Bronte, having to live with the painful experience of their lives cut short by disease, damp environment and drinking/drug abuse, for the rest of his life. @@MemorySeekers , I remember very clearly reading the book "Jane Eyre" by Charlotte Bronte, and also seeing something like 7 movie adaptations, and the TV adaptation of this particular book. I was fascinated by the romantic, and yet dark, and tragic aspects of the story. I only wish I had read the other books by the Bronte sisters. So very tragic about Bramwell destroying himself with ludanum(?) , and alcohol, which would have caused irreversible liver and kidney failure. 😢. Thank you again for your reply! @@cassandraralph5906 The other novels are great too, though the earlier ones (Agnes Grey and The Professor) have a different feel. Wuthering Heights is my favorite. Tenant of Wildfell Hall (by Anne Bronte) contains a character likely based on the brother, Branwell. The way she describes the personality and behavior of an alcoholic is chilling, and amazingly little different from what we see today. Compared to other popular novels of the day, the Brontes were very honest in their writing. I recently read a novel called Romancing Miss Bronte, a fictionalized story about Charlotte's life, which I enjoyed very much. I'm sure we will all be here next week for the Parsonage tour. Memoryseekers fans are the best! :)

Thank you Joen. I agree with you, I like the night scenes it was so lovely to walk around, the village is quiet at night and the rain just makes all the lights bleed on the cobbled streets. We got some good photos that night.

I was waiting to see if the sisters found love. Charlotte being left as the only surviving child, then she finds love and her and her unborn child die. How much we take for granted in our time. I wouldn’t assume that Charlotte found love with her husband. She married quite late, as her father was aging. For women of that era, marriage was extremely important as a way to survive, assuming the man wasn’t abusive. If she’d survived her father as a spinster, she’d have been homeless, as a new curate wouldn’t have allowed her to stay, unless he could afford to hire her as a governess for his own children, if any. She’d have needed to either find employment, or hope that her Irish or Cornish relatives could take her in. Her books subsequent to Jane Eyre didn’t sell as well. The idea of marrying only for love was still relatively new, and many people married for economic and other reasons. Patrick’s initial objection to the match may have been because there was no love there; or, perhaps, since childbirth was very dangerous for women, and Charlotte was old to have a first baby, in those days, he may also have feared for her safety. But he also would have known that were he to predecease her, she’d be hard-pressed to make a living on her own. Which may have been why he relented. How bitter for him that she died while pregnant. Life in that era was very hard.

As others have said, you gentlemen have outdone yourselves this time. Excellent job! I loved the dark rainy view of the cobble streets. I can imagine Heathcliff striding there with a scowl, his coat tails flapping. He looks a bit like Tom Hardy, lol. Thank you for braving the walk up to the "heights". I love that novel, and did a deep dive into the history of the family, as well as reading the entire published works. It is such a treat to see the locations up close. Your final thoughts made me think of Mozart, who died at what I consider a very young age; did their talents burn bright because their lives were short, or would they have, as you said, gone on to even greater things. I am sending this on to my six favorite people, all of whom love books and everything English. Looking forward to your tour of the parsonage. Kudos!

Its not often you want the rain but it really helped the presentation and we took some lovely shots as the rain made the street lights shine into the cobbles. The place was so quiet then as well. I have to say that all your segments on the homes and haunts of British literary figures are so enjoyable . I am looking forward to the tour of the Bronte parsonage . It sounds as though the Bronte family biography would make a a great gothic novel in it's self .
My daughter & I stayed at the Old White Lion Inn across from the Black Bull in May and loved Haworth. The people were so warm and welcoming. They even have their own taxi company that took us back to Bradford to the train station.
I think if we went back again, we would try one of the pubs to stay in. The do look delightful and being right in the centre is just lovely. Especially at night when its quiet.

Charlotte, to be 39 yrs and pregnant for the first time, would seem particularly difficult in that time. What a strong life and challenge these woman faced. We are removed from the toll of death from disease (TB, etc).

I noticed Ukrainian flag, but thought it was a local one, but then you showed another one and the third, torn in the church. Thank you for the walking tour of West Yorkshire and the locales familiar to the Bronte family. It makes their lives and their books more meaningful to see the physical context in which they were written. For the sake of the narrative, the scandals and controversies surrounding the sisters, particularly Charlotte's suppression of her sisters' works, were omitted. They might make a fitting subject for a future video. Anne's literary reputation especially suffered from Charlotte's misguided judgment, when Anne was in fact the most modern, realistic and insightful of the three novelists. She deserved better.

What a lovely, unintended tribute to the Brontë sister! Having read Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights numerous times, I feel this video captured the essence of their works’ inspiration and who they were. Such a tragedy that their lives were so sadly cut short. I imagine they would have been so much more prolific as writers. Thanks for sharing these glimpses and insights into your beautiful country and its rich and its rich and layered history.
Very good filming, and very atmospheric. I also liked seeing the interior of the parsonage, imagining the Brontes using the objects displayed. The wild moors, the tragic short lives, the heartbreak - I can see how they influenced Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre, both wonderful books.
Fantastic documentary! Thank you for bringing back the memories. I visited Haworth and walked the same paths you did on the moors 20 years ago. I was much younger back then, but it was still quite the hike especially on the uneven paths and rocky slopes. I didn't take any videos back then, so I'm really glad to have discovered this episode on TH-cam to take me back and relive some precious memories. Those Bronte sisters must've had quite the stamina to walk through this landscape every day as their playground!

I have always known that the lives of the Bronte Sisters were unlucky, but I didn't imagine that they were very much ominous and sinister! You guys have put my psyche in a very sad state by the information you have given about the Bronte's and their tragic lives. And that in itself is a testimony for your good work. Thanks a lot and keep it up.
I am sure there were very happy times for them between the sadness. Anne and Charlotte were governesses, and Emily was happy in her domestic enviroment. Also their book writing kept them busy and success meant a lot to them.
It is a very sad tale, one which I am sure was similar for many families of that era. People did die young then due to many factors. We find it quite shocking now but it was the norm back then. Knowing that they were no different to other families suffering death might have helped them come to terms with it? It was affecting every household in the area. We will touch on this more when we walk in Haworth in a future video, mortality rates were unusually high in Haworth as can be seen in the Church which is crammed full of very young locals. 😰 As others have said there were many periods of happiness for the Brontes, they seemed a very strong family.

Thank you very much. This was lovely, and one of your highest quality so far. I am going to bring up a tiny quibble, but only because it shows another tiny sadness of the Brontë family. Patrick was offered a perpetual curacy, not a proper rectorship. He had all the duties of a proper holder of the church office of rector, but could be paid less because of the title. (Pay method complicated.) Usually a curateship is a sort of doctor's residency, where you work long hours for little or even no pay. But owing to 19th century parsimony, Patrick got this awful betwixt and between title, so his large family got less money. But he did, in his turn, have a curate to help him, but obviously had to pay him. It all adds to the tragedy.

The books have their faith in God as Christians running all through them, and I believe that the father, who saw so much pain, took refuge in the Lord to bring him through his life.

One can only imagine the effects of their deaths on Patrick Bronte, having to live with the painful experience of their lives cut short by disease, damp environment and drinking/drug abuse, for the rest of his life. @@MemorySeekers , I remember very clearly reading the book "Jane Eyre" by Charlotte Bronte, and also seeing something like 7 movie adaptations, and the TV adaptation of this particular book. I was fascinated by the romantic, and yet dark, and tragic aspects of the story. I only wish I had read the other books by the Bronte sisters. So very tragic about Bramwell destroying himself with ludanum(?) , and alcohol, which would have caused irreversible liver and kidney failure. 😢. Thank you again for your reply! @@cassandraralph5906 The other novels are great too, though the earlier ones (Agnes Grey and The Professor) have a different feel. Wuthering Heights is my favorite. Tenant of Wildfell Hall (by Anne Bronte) contains a character likely based on the brother, Branwell. The way she describes the personality and behavior of an alcoholic is chilling, and amazingly little different from what we see today. Compared to other popular novels of the day, the Brontes were very honest in their writing. I recently read a novel called Romancing Miss Bronte, a fictionalized story about Charlotte's life, which I enjoyed very much. I'm sure we will all be here next week for the Parsonage tour. Memoryseekers fans are the best! :)

Simon and Will you outdid yourselves this time. My favourite so far. What a tragic tale. So much loss. It was the way of the times but I don’t know how they handled it all. I was waiting to see if the sisters found love. Charlotte being left as the only surviving child, then she finds love and her and her unborn child die. How much we take for granted in our time. I wouldn’t assume that Charlotte found love with her husband. She married quite late, as her father was aging. For women of that era, marriage was extremely important as a way to survive, assuming the man wasn’t abusive. If she’d survived her father as a spinster, she’d have been homeless, as a new curate wouldn’t have allowed her to stay, unless he could afford to hire her as a governess for his own children, if any. She’d have needed to either find employment, or hope that her Irish or Cornish relatives could take her in. Her books subsequent to Jane Eyre didn’t sell as well. The idea of marrying only for love was still relatively new, and many people married for economic and other reasons. Patrick’s initial objection to the match may have been because there was no love there; or, perhaps, since childbirth was very dangerous for women, and Charlotte was old to have a first baby, in those days, he may also have feared for her safety. But he also would have known that were he to predecease her, she’d be hard-pressed to make a living on her own. Which may have been why he relented. How bitter for him that she died while pregnant. Life in that era was very hard.
@@Historian212 I guess that’s what I meant. I should have said that she married and wasn’t left alone. I’m well aware marriages were out of necessity and convenience then.

As others have said, you gentlemen have outdone yourselves this time. Excellent job! I loved the dark rainy view of the cobble streets. I can imagine Heathcliff striding there with a scowl, his coat tails flapping. He looks a bit like Tom Hardy, lol. Thank you for braving the walk up to the "heights". I love that novel, and did a deep dive into the history of the family, as well as reading the entire published works. It is such a treat to see the locations up close. Your final thoughts made me think of Mozart, who died at what I consider a very young age; did their talents burn bright because their lives were short, or would they have, as you said, gone on to even greater things. I am sending this on to my six favorite people, all of whom love books and everything English. Looking forward to your tour of the parsonage. Kudos!

Its not often you want the rain but it really helped the presentation and we took some lovely shots as the rain made the street lights shine into the cobbles. The place was so quiet then as well. My daughter & I stayed at the Old White Lion Inn across from the Black Bull in May and loved Haworth. The people were so warm and welcoming. They even have their own taxi company that took us back to Bradford to the train station.
I think if we went back again, we would try one of the pubs to stay in. The do look delightful and being right in the centre is just lovely. Especially at night when its quiet.

Charlotte, to be 39 yrs and pregnant for the first time, would seem particularly difficult in that time. What a strong life and challenge these woman faced. We are removed from the toll of death from disease (TB, etc).

Thank you for the walking tour of West Yorkshire and the locales familiar to the Bronte family. It makes their lives and their books more meaningful to see the physical context in which they were written. For the sake of the narrative, the scandals and controversies surrounding the sisters, particularly Charlotte's suppression of her sisters' works, were omitted. They might make a fitting subject for a future video. Anne's literary reputation especially suffered from Charlotte's misguided judgment, when Anne was in fact the most modern, realistic and insightful of the three novelists. She deserved better.

What a lovely, unintended tribute to the Brontë sister! Having read Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights numerous times, I feel this video captured the essence of their works’ inspiration and who they were. Such a tragedy that their lives were so sadly cut short. I imagine they would have been so much more prolific as writers. Thanks for sharing these glimpses and insights into your beautiful country and its rich and its rich and layered history.

Very good filming, and very atmospheric. I also liked seeing the interior of the parsonage, imagining the Brontes using the objects displayed. The wild moors, the tragic short lives, the heartbreak - I can see how they influenced Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre, both wonderful books.

Fantastic documentary! Thank you for bringing back the memories. I visited Haworth and walked the same paths you did on the moors 20 years ago. I was much younger back then, but it was still quite the hike especially on the uneven paths and rocky slopes. I didn't take any videos back then, so I'm really glad to have discovered this episode on TH-cam to take me back and relive some precious memories. Those Bronte sisters must've had quite the stamina to walk through this landscape every day as their playground!

I have always known that the lives of the Bronte Sisters were unlucky, but I didn't imagine that they were very much ominous and sinister! You guys have put my psyche in a very sad state by the information you have given about the Bronte's and their tragic lives. And that in itself is a testimony for your good work. Thanks a lot and keep it up.
I am sure there were very happy times for them between the sadness. Anne and Charlotte were governesses, and Emily was happy in her domestic enviroment. Also their book writing kept them busy and success meant a lot to them.
It is a very sad tale, one which I am sure was similar for many families of that era. People did die young then due to many factors. We find it quite shocking now but it was the norm back then. Knowing that they were no different to other families suffering death might have helped them come to terms with it? It was affecting every household in the area. We will touch on this more when we walk in Haworth in a future video, mortality rates were unusually high in Haworth as can be seen in the Church which is crammed full of very young locals. 😰
As others have said there were many periods of happiness for the Brontes, they seemed a very strong family.

Thank you very much. This was lovely, and one of your highest quality so far. I am going to bring up a tiny quibble, but only because it shows another tiny sadness of the Brontë family. Patrick was offered a perpetual curacy, not a proper rectorship. He had all the duties of a proper holder of the church office of rector, but could be paid less because of the title. (Pay method complicated.) Usually a curateship is a sort of doctor's residency, where you work long hours for little or even no pay. But owing to 19th century parsimony, Patrick got this awful betwixt and between title, so his large family got less money. But he did, in his turn, have a curate to help him, but obviously had to pay him. It all adds to the tragedy.

@@yougotmeinstitches1847 Yes it made sense, thank you it was very kind. Whilst we don't know much about Beatrix ( we can find out) we do have it on the list. The Lakes is somewhere just like Yorkshire we wanted to visit. Possibly one for next year when the weather picks up again. ☺

Another wonderful, well researched and presented video. I'm enjoying the Yorkshire series a lot, given me plenty of ideas for visits. Haworth is special to me as my wife proposed to me (I was too slow apparently) there, and we are still happily married 16 years later!

I visited the parsonage 40 years ago.I amAustralian and cannot afford to go again.I wanted to visit the pub where Branwelldid his drinking but Brit Rail were on strike and l had to return to London.
