Kurt Rodammer and don’t change that either. Always keep in mind this is my “playground”. I’ve been blessed to be able to try and test different methods and ways just for the heck of it. Lol. If something goes wrong I can always fix it 😎
Works great! th-cam.com/users/postUgkxprGGPRQoChQaA8u58dt7miEpxQBKiWeJ More difficult with longer grass, though, but I was expecting that. I have a small back yard, it seemed like overkill to buy a lawnmower with an engine. This is easy to carry in and out of the basement through the bulkhead. Very sharp (be careful). At the back of the mower are little wheels, which I use when pulling the mower backwards, so it's easy to readjust direction. I'm including a photo which shows the before and after for my lawn when it was at its longest. For long grass like that you really have to put some muscle into it, and I needed to go into a new section of grass with some momentum, but when the grass is only an inch or two higher than regular cut height it's quite easy. The lawn is still patchy and full of weeds, but at least it's a good height! A step in the right direction.
Pete, Months ago when I first viewed this video I had no idea that this would be a huge game changer for me. It started me down the road of my lawn obsession. I’ve learned so much through watching yourself, Allett Mowers, Ryan, Connor, Allyn, The Pest and Lawn Ginga, and Brian. My lawn went from being an embarrassment to being the envy of the neighbourhood. In the spring, while digging out thousands of dandelions, one neighbour walked by and rudely said “You got a lot of work ahead of you!” I couldn’t believe how rude he was. Through lots of hard work and learning as I went I’ve transformed a horrible weed garden into a healthy, blindingly bright striped lawn that is now something to be proud of. Lots of room for improvement but I’m always looking forward to the next step.
Wow Duncan, your testimony is very impressive and encouraging. Keep up the good work. Pete is an amazing individual. I also just started seeing these videos and have a terrible lawn. I hope to learn a lot from Pete and have a similar story like yours to share some day.👍👍👍
Great video Pete. Along with the attachments that were shown in your video, reel mowing is clearly superior to rotary mowing. Allett machines are works of art, and I believe that their price is justified by the results that are produced. Thanks for making and sharing this video.
I love anyone that is dedicated to their lawn..especially the type of turf! Just got my brand new John Deere 1550 terrain turf..This mower is unbelievable I tell you what.
Dethatching is the best way to prepare your lawn for seeds vs aerating as it opens the lawn and exposes the soil for better seed to soil contact. I've always had great success with dethatching. I see way too many lawn companies aerate and seed lawns with no success as the seeds just sits on thatch and dead grass. A buddy finally followed my advice about dethatching and seeding vs aerating and seeding and has been tickled pink with the outcome. He's now a believer.
Finally someone gets it, everything you just said plus what good is seed falling into a two inch hole. Aerating and seeding is sucks, unless your going over bare dirt a bunch of times to loosen the crap out it. Dethatch, aerate, slice seed is my preferred method or aerate/ sliceseed.
@@michaelperry4398 I agree with the seeds dropping in a 2" aerated hole where it will never see the day of light. The lawn companies suggest aerating because it requires less work than dethatching, but gives poor results. I see it done every year at my neighbors house.
I pushed a manual cast iron reel mower from age 10 to age 16. Big lawn too. Even a small pebble or twig would stop that thing cold. Just looking at the one in this video brings back not so fond memories. This year I went self propelled, battery powered. Love it. This may be heresy, but I'm not sure I like stripes.
I live in Maryland Heights, Mo just about 25 miles from down town St Louis and it is very hard to grow grass because the summers become very hot and humid. My lawn does good because I mixed GCI and Jonathan green tall fescue grass seed. And wow my lawn pops with the help of Carbon X and humc acid. Even our St louis Cardinals use a straight bluegrass and works for them. I have neighbor that uses a reel mower on his blue grass lawn and wow looks great at 1/2 inch and do not know how he is doing it.
Nutrients and water. It's not "too" hard to grow grass here in STL, just takes a lot of babying though the summer. The golf courses around here look great in our area and they have a mix of grasses. Major difference is between sand base surfaces and native soils, Cardinals vs your home. You must be near Koven, he's definitely one to watch growing bluegrass on native soil. 👍
The update we’ve all been waiting for! Looking fantastic! Been watching since the beginning of the renovation. Next renovation needs to be the driving range for sure. Keep up the good work!
Great video! Pete I know you are a commercial equipment guy. But the Sunjoe dethacher/ scarifier works similar to that machine. Aside for the reel mowing. I used it doing my GCI turf academy and got fantastic results. The Lawn Ginja did a review on it
Reel mowing is perfect for a homeowner that wants to keep his lawn pristine. Having said that, I've never had a lawn under 10,000 sqf, and there is no way I'm cutting that two-3 times a week. Ain't happening captain! I just don't have the free time.
Seeing those long stripes on that big grass patch makes the lawn look like a vegetable garden, but then again I don't like/dislike stripes. But that turf looks like it's coming in great! And thanks for letting us in on your first reel shopping experience.
I have always wondered why residential commercial lawn mower companies couldn't have a commercial reel mower It absolutely does the best job of cutting
Thing is, you need both . Rotary to deal with the start of the season and hoovering duties. Then a reel mower. With a reel mower you can overseed and cut the lawn the same day as well.
i just got a D100 riding lawnmover first ever and i thought it was the best. seen the first machine cutting make me realized theirs other levels of best
WoW Pete that reno looks awesome!! I love seeing each footstep in the new grass as you're mowing. Especially in the Rye Grass. I caught a couple videos on the Allett last weekend and really love the way that thing can thatch. The other cartridge would be awesome for over seeding!!
What we HAVE here looks like the American Flag w/o the stars. Puts some curves on the stripes to give that wave look. Figure out the stars later. Feel like saluting my computer. Some creative potential I see there. Love that late 60s sound theme music too. Rock on Big Pete.
Make sure you take a look on how to sharpen those reels and how to tighten and adjust the reel to get the best cut you can get everytime. I have done it on a great machine.
All bentgrass grown golf course greens are mowed with a reel mower every day !!! When I was a little kid, I would go out with my Dad, be the first ones off Nbr-1 Tee in the morning, and we would eventually catch up with the guys mowing the greens with a reel mower.. The scissor action cut is the absolute best way to cut grass because it cuts it so precisely and evenly.. Kind of like when you get a haircut and the person only uses scissors- it always looks better, right ?? The only thing I didn't know about these reel mowers is that they do not cut even at 2" inches high, unless its other more expensive models?? I don't know how that is going to work in a really hot summer when we all try to cut it higher, so it will shade the blades down below better.. I love that this company has a reel that has more blades so it will cut even finer, but of course, it all costs more $$.. :) Thanks Pete for all the work you did for this and for what you always do for us every day !!
you may have missed your calling as a golf course super. the look of the reel mow is amazing. but outside of a golf context it seems like it would be nothing but a giant time sink UNLESS your yard was tiny or turfcare was your hobby and how you chose to spend your free pleasure time.
OMG, what a difference big guy!!!! I had my own project this fall and I have some patches that are still "light" and haven't filled in completely but dang, your patch here is awesome man!!! Good for you and thanks for the video....I miss not getting the more frequent content but I get it, it's a hard job. Appreciate you and will continue to support/follow. Have a great weekend!
They look really well built (beefier than the Swardman). I love the cartridge system and glad they are powered by Hondas. I'm sure they cost as much as an entry level car though.
As good as it looks now imagine how it would look after a month or 2 after the grass was used to being cut reel low. I am thinking it would look like outdoor carpet. I have a Swardman Edwin for about a year and half and I will never go back to rotary cutting. Every time I mow someone almost always stops by and ask me about it. That Allett looks like an indestructible tank.
Beautifully mown you'd pass your mowing test for that work, nothing more enjoyable than mowing lawns with a well set reel mower remember to alternate cutting directions every week or you will get what's called wash boarding then that causex more work
Thank you Pete. Will be waiting for your review on how well the kbg thrives in NC. I just mixed some kbg with your TTTF so I guess you could say that I'm experimenting too.
I run a Toro GreensMaster 1000 on my putting green. Cuts the bentgrass at just over 1/8th of an inch. I love it but it's expensive. The mowers new are $10-$12k. Yearly maintenance and sharpening roughly $500. It's an investment and really a passion. I use mine 6+ times a week on the green.
O I'm totally with you on all this my pistol grip exmark is thee best machine but this reel mowing has always been an interest thank you for the info what kinda cost you think it would be for all the Lil tips of a reel mower rake airrater sweep brush an cutter worth in a package
Used to work at a golf course. Imagine taking 5 reels off to sharpen instead of 1. And we had 5 units. 3 reels for tee and greens mowers 5 for fairway mowers. Stripe beautifully though. Great investment
Pete, I got to tell you that those test plots are just looking amazing! Those stripes are really on point! That Allett mower is quite a beast too. I am really enjoying the content here and looking forward to seeing how this progresses.
Pete, thank you so much for your videos and honest reviews! I'm also in NC and having a fellow NC'er show how to properly plant and care for different turf grasses is so helpful. Thanks again!
John Deer reel mowers have the rake attached to them and it goes simultaneously, I used them on a golf course and they work so well. Also very easy to use, I did better stripes then them going twice as fast.
Have a cheap 100 buck push reel mover. The weeds keep getting stuck on the side of the blades so i have to constantly remove it or else it wont go forward. Its ok though i have a small yard.
As a 24 year professional lawn guy, as beneficial as this obviously is, my first thought, would it sell?? At least in my area, no. I have problems even getting aerations : (
They are not easy to maintain! I ran Honda’s at the golf course I worked at. And the blades had to be sharpened all the time!! And that spindle blade is no joke!! You’ll slice your finger off if you’re not careful. Also those baskets fill up quick, and that was w bent grass. I can’t imagine mowing anything that would grow longer then that.
Pete, man the front our your shop looks great. I cannot wait to see the way the shop looks next summer when you seed the area with turf Bermuda. Awesome!!!
You state that this is a new concept to you. Then you say that you are against the typical dethatch machine. I think that it is good to do a good mechanical dethatch only when doing a yard renovation. I am doing a test in my yard. I detached this past spring and used Nex-t dethatch this season. I kept the lawn pretty long all summer and only needed to water 4x due to a wet summer. I was also using Air-8, 0-0-3 microgreene and humic12. I bagged my lawn all summer so I have put very little back on the lawn. There is currently no thatch layer. I usually do a mechanical aeration in the spring just to wake it up from the snow pack. I am anxious to see how it looks this coming spring. Hopi g that a mechanical dethatch isnt necessary.
Hey Pete...loved this!! You must go back to you dads range in the spring and see how everything else looks compared to what you guys raked/dethatched. Also, can you cut tttf to 3-3/12 height with the reel mower? I'm over in Knoxville....my yard would bake at anything shorter. Keep up the content, God bless buddy!
Nice mower, impractical for some I'm thinking...very few Allett dealers in the US...stripes are pretty flippin' crazy, but it's a reel and they tend to do that. Best have a flat surface to work with too. I don't live on a driving range or a baseball diamond. I have an acre sectioned off from Mordor. I have a feeling that mower would explode into tiny metal pieces after a few mows on this lawn. Beautiful piece of kit though.
There are over 70 Dealer outlets throughout the USA now & growing quickly!! (Take a looked at the Buckingham 30H ride-on unit, its built like a tank!!).
I know it's not comparable to this (although I'd love to get one if I had the money), I scarified for the first time using a sun joe and wow I was amazed at how much thatch it retrieved from such a small machine that is electric.
We’re those both aerator cartridges? One more aggressive than the other? Amazed he went over those two paths over and over that many times with no destruction to the turf. Awesome stuff. Love to see more like this video.
I live in the northeast and reel mowing just isn't practical for my yard. I also like to cut at 3 1/2". What's the next best thing to reel mowing for great stripes?
I’m damn late again First Aussie 😁 Nice stripes. 😎👍🏼👍🏼. Nice spot for travellers to pull up for a picnic or rest stop for the night, good of you to think about weary travellers with nice thick green grass to put their camping chairs on . 🤔🤣😂
If you're really serious about reel mowing get a used greensmaster, then you can run a groomer (verticut) while you mow. If you want to offer verticutting I'd get a machine dedicated to it, like an old 3100 triplex. I'll tell you though, dumping buckets gets old quick.
Doesn't surprise me that an Englishman is behind all this. They make some of the finest reel mowers in the world. A lot of them roll out of the Ransome and Rapier plant in Ipswich, Suffolk, home of the Suffolk Punch. Great mower.
Good Lord, all mighty! That is some beautiful looking turf and one sweet machine. You know how some people say, “I’m going to have one of those cars one day?” I’m saying the same thing about one of those Allett mowers. I’m going to have one of those, one day. Those cartridges are similar to the Swardsman, but on steroids!
awesome video brother awesome video doesn't ventrac make a reel mower attachment I thought they did I like the machine you were just testing I run the true cut on multiple occasions the 27th I liked it but I also like that because you had a higher cut height and I'm doing Saint Augustine at almost 2 in what's they say you shouldn't do but it's like anything else once you adjust the grass to it once again great video I hate that we're not getting lots from you but I'm glad you worked it out where it fits in the family work in educating us keep on getting on brother
I'll stick to seeing a reel mowed lawn when I go golfing.😅 Seriously reel mowing looks like waaayyyy to much work

@@warthief3401 with a mower that has rollers at the rear rather than wheels. To be as good as this your lawn also needs to be very flat.

Ken Zaleski not sure who makes a reel mower that cuts that high???
@@GCITurf I wondered, another thought, the rake cartridge might be good for fall overseed prep.
If you get one I would it conditions the lawn as total lawn care which if it was me as a business in lawn care for superb looking lawn.
Pete that was stunning next level for sure. Thanks to Connor Ward and his emaculate living green carpet.
Chris Alarcon it’s all his fault. LOL
Allett should get a Nobel Peace Prize for this!
Looks amazing. Very jealous, I think it shows off your hard work in soil condition and grass growing products when you put stripes in like that.
I had an old power reel mower that a neighbor gave me as a kid grieving up in NJ
I know it's not comparable to this (although I'd love to get one if I had the money), I scarified for the first time using a sun joe and wow I was amazed at how much thatch it retrieved from such a small machine that is electric.
I follow them on Instagram those mowers cut beautiful!! That lawn rake is crazy...
How did he get the stripes like that? Do you change the level every other stripe to create the contrast?
I’m damn late again First Aussie 😁 Nice stripes. 😎👍🏼👍🏼. Nice spot for travellers to pull up for a picnic or rest stop for the night, good of you to think about weary travellers with nice thick green grass to put their camping chairs on . 🤔🤣😂
If you're really serious about reel mowing get a used greensmaster, then you can run a groomer (verticut) while you mow. If you want to offer verticutting I'd get a machine dedicated to it, like an old 3100 triplex. I'll tell you though, dumping buckets gets old quick.
I was at Sherwin Williams today buying paint. I didn’t see GCI TURF - turf type tall fescue green in the color code choices. 🤔🤣🤣
Gooooooo Pete! 😎👊
George Popa BAH HA HA HA. George. You are so cool man! Always encouraging. I respect you sir. I’m proud to call you friend.
GCI Turf Services thank you! Have a great day👊😎
Don’t even give this man hell about straight lines, I’ve been mowing putting greens for years and i still get stray lines
Doesn't surprise me that an Englishman is behind all this. They make some of the finest reel mowers in the world. A lot of them roll out of the Ransome and Rapier plant in Ipswich, Suffolk, home of the Suffolk Punch. Great mower.
reel mowers work great on Bermuda, not so well with centipede. but that Thatcher attachment with the collection hopper tho. awesome
Can you do that with a normal lawn mower?
Awesome video. I did not know Allett made mowers in that size.
Some guy and his wife was selling their house and moving to Florida. He had a reel mower in good condition and selling it for only $2000.
The rye grass looks the best ....I believe it is the best
That golf range looks like one I've been to located right off of highway 14 (on the right of you are going towards Reidsville NC)
These are their sports turf models so that is cool!
If they could put that Allett reel system onto a zero turn stander with hydros it would be a winner.
Brent Hill how cool would that be!!!!
Damm now that's some nice stripes, Pete that is a machine wow!! 👍👍
awesome video brother awesome video doesn't ventrac make a reel mower attachment I thought they did I like the machine you were just testing I run the true cut on multiple occasions the 27th I liked it but I also like that because you had a higher cut height and I'm doing Saint Augustine at almost 2 in what's they say you shouldn't do but it's like anything else once you adjust the grass to it once again great video I hate that we're not getting lots from you but I'm glad you worked it out where it fits in the family work in educating us keep on getting on brother
Stripes AMAZING... I wonder how it would do.. in uneven turf.. great machine. 👍
