    (Living in Australia) I used to feed my cat whiskas when he was a kitten. He had lots of litter box issues, mainly diarrhea, so i took him to the vets. When the vets heard that I was using whiskas they assured me that all of his issues were most likely caused by that and compared whiskas for cats to a human eating McDonalds every single day! That was one year ago and ever since then I have been using Hill's science diet cat food and my now two cats have never had a problem again. Always ask your vet what they feed to their own pets at home!

      For the first few weeks I used Hills’ Science Diet kitten food, then we got Optimum but she did horrible diarhea, changed it and found more Hill’s Science Diet, but then after a small amount of time we switched her main diet to Whiskas kitten dry food all the way until this year. Recently (a few days ago) I noticed she wasn’t eating her Whiskas 1 year plus at all and changed it to Fancy Feast’s tuna and mackerel, i feed 1/4 cup in the morning, 1/6 cup in the evening and then a very small amount at night. Am I feeding her okay?

  • @ZaDussault
    @ZaDussault 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Our old cat had to be switched to the softest cat food possible, but she was VERY picky. As she was also underweight, our priority was to make her ear, no matter what and she would not accept anything else than whiskas patties, poultry flavored. We tried ALL wet cat food out there, but no, we had to cut her wet food in chunks for her. We've been judged by so many people that, at the store, told us that that food was bad for our cat. But bad food is better than no food, she would just not eat if we gave her anything else. I'm glad you made a review on those!

    I fed my previous cats(20 years ago) Whiskas. They loved it, until impossible to find. My current cat, 15 year old Boo-winkle, has a chicken allergy, hyperthyroidism, a bit of dementia, is grieving over the sudden loss of his best friend and litter mate, Rocky, and also had a bad ear infection causing deafness. Poor baby has been through so much yet maintains his sweet disposition. Due to his illness, food is quite an issue and his only joy right now. His allergy and hyperthyroidism doesn't allow anything with chicken or fish and it's practically impossible to find wet food without either one despite the flavor, resulting in putting far, far more down the garbage disposal than into his stomach. He seems to be getting bored with Instinct Limited Ingredients Rabbit or Duck, so for a treat, I bought a case of Fancy Feast Turkey and Gravy. Total junk food ingredients, but surprisingly, no chicken or fish in it. He loves it, of course.

    My parents cats both lived until 20 years old! They ONLY ate Whiskas dry food, we tried giving them the more expensive or different brands but they wouldn't eat it. The one cat died of kidney failure (at 20 years) and did vomit too frequently for my liking, the other had no issues but dementia in her last years. (almost 21 years) This is a tricky subject as I can't argue that they didn't live full lives by only eating Whiskas.

This confirms what Jackson Galaxy said in one of his pet food videos is that even the worst graded wet food is better than any dry cat food because cats should only eat wet or better yet, raw food and tuna is not a good fish for cats, too much mercury for their tiny bodies!

Thank you also for recognizing that many pet owners may not be able to afford high quality foods and for addressing concerns in a way that may not recommend a given food but also doesn’t come down hard on folks who just want to find the best options within their budgets. Especially a challenge during this inflation.
    Also, I have found that I can often find better pricing for any quality pet foods online- Amazon and other distributors frequently offer 25%-off coupons for your first purchase of a brand, on top of any other discounts.

    Good video. I'm in the UK and my cats are currently eating Whiskas canned food. I have 10 cats so the pouches are far too expensive. In the UK, Whiskas is one of the most expensive of the "cheaper" brands at £4.75 ($6.36) for 6 x 390g cans (13.75 oz). In the UK there are certain additives that are banned from food, including E numbers (preservatives, food colouring etc.).
    I did try my cats on Whiskas dry food but had to stop giving it to them as it was causing several of them to have very loose stools. Switched them to Go Cat (made by Purina) and they're OK with that. However, two of my cats are losing some of their fur. They are all indoor cats and don't have fleas so not that. I can only assume that two of them possibly have a food allergy. The only other canned foods I can get are Felix (made by Purina) but only available from one store - Pets at Home. I think they're called Petsmart in America. At the moment my car is awaiting repairs so I can't get to PaH as it is quite a distance away. The only other canned food we can get is supermarkets own brands and these are usually not very good.
    Of course, as we all know, cats are fussy and mine will quickly let me know if they don't like something. The ages of my cats range from 3 years to 22 years. They get dry food in the afternoon, not too much and their main meal at night. They also have a 5 litre water fountain so always have access to filtered water.
    As for the more expensive cat foods, a few months ago there were several high end brands recalled, one being Applelaws because there was something in them that was causing cats to become very ill and many died. I think it might have been something caused by that mould talked about in the video showing that things can go very wrong whether it's cheap cat food or expensive cat food. As far as I'm aware, no real cause has yet been found.

    • @nightlurker
      @nightlurker 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The problem last year was with dried food and affected a number of brands, including some supermarket own label. This also highlighted that Applaws did not make their own dry food, but used a bulk manufacturer, so I would not give my cats any Applaws dried food but do feed them the canned food which they love as it's at least 70% human grade meat or fish with no grains. It also has some interesting fruit and vegetables added, such as pumpkin or seaweed.

      @@Pythonaria You? Hoarders neglect their pets all the time because they can't afford to take care of them all. You literally just said it's all too expensive so you have to feed them cheap garbage that's making them horribly sick.

    • @Pythonaria
      @Pythonaria 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@VARY78 I have NEVER said it's all too expensive. Go and read my comment again properly. If my cats are so "horribly sick" then do explain why my oldest is 22, followed by 2 17 year olds, a 16 year old, 2 10 years olds and the others younger? My oldest cat lived to 23. None of them would live to such a great age if they were "horribly sick" as you claim.
      You may have misinterpreted why my car is currently off the road. It is not because I can't afford to repair it, it is because I am having difficulty sourcing parts for it as there is a shortage caused by there not being enough truck drivers in Europe at the moment. Even the garage I use has tried and failed to find parts and it's not a small part that's needed either.
      As for my cats, I have 10. Until I became disabled due to an accident 18 months ago I fostered for a local rescue and helped with trapping. I can no longer help with trapping and I'm currently only on the foster list for dire emergencies, meaning if I have to foster it is on the strict understanding that the cat or kitten can only stay long enough until a more permanent solution is found, days rather than weeks.
      The last foster fail I had came to me in a very sorry state. 8 months old, full of cat 'flu, parasites, covered in sores, extremely underweight, very, very scared and she was unspayed. She was a surrender and had been abused by the previous owner. It took over 4 months of regular trips to the vet, lots of medication to get her well enough to be spayed. She was also microchipped. She turned into a beautiful, sleek black cat who is now super friendly and very mischievous and a much loved part of my family as they all are.
      You might want to look up a dictionary and read what the term "hoarder" means. Hoarders keep on hoarding. They never get medical treatment for the animals they take in and many are left to starve and live in appalling conditions. These people usually have mental health problems as has been shown time and time again. I am physically disabled now but my adult son lives with me and does a lot of the housework I can no longer do such as vacuuming. We would not like to live in a pig sty and I'm sure our cats would not like that either as cats are fastidiously clean animals.
      You come across as a sanctimonious prat with more money than sense who judges people without knowing them or their circumstances. Simply put, you are a troll but remember this. Pride comes before a fall and boy, are you in for a big fall.
      Now go away and troll someone else.

    GREAT VIDEO! I've been around cats my whole life, 60+ years. A few years ago I noticed one of my cats little teeth on the bottom were broke off. I started looking at the other cats I have, this broken teeth thing looks pretty common, but...I switched so Senior bag cat food, red bag at wallmart, it's small and easier to break. Tender Vittles seems good too.. I've been buying kitten foods too and mixing the bags. I have tested a few bag cat foods I had, and most I could barely break the pieces with pliers...pliers! WTF! The hardest one to break was a TOP name healthy food on the market. On the wet food topic, I have tried many brands, some cats eat it, some don't. Some eat some brands, some don't. Some cans, they won't touch. After watching your video, now I know why. Even some of the top brands, they only eat the gravy. And talking with other pet owners in the cat food isle at the store, everyone says, "I don't know why I buy the can food, they don't eat it." Do a video on plastic bowls and cats getting sick from the plastic. One more thing, I used to work a shipping dock in my younger days, we'd get big bags off the boats the size of volkswagons, filled with stuff that looked like small chunks of Styrofoam, bags would break open and we'd shovel it off the ground. I was told. it was trucked out to a factory and turned into dog food.

    Sry but there is no excuse to feed trash food like whiskas! The Price is the worst argument. Whiskas = 3,00-3,50€/1kg // 350g per day for a 5kg Cat (feeding instructions)
    Lets take MAC's , not the best one but a realy good low price option= 3,20-4,00€/ 1kg // 180-250g for 5kg cat. Whiskas = 38% meat and animal by-products (4% chicken) e.g this could be fck any trash from meat production + Sugar. MAC's = 45% chicken + 25% beef = 70%! + exactly declared animal by-products like heart, liver... no sugar.
    The problem with trash food like whiskas are the attractants/sugar. It seems like cats hate everything but Whiskas, Kitekat... but only if they are used to it. You argue, your cant wont eat high quality food? Bullshit, be patient and resolute, most people take the easy way. We got a 10 year old BSH from the shelter who never had good food before + an eating disorder (he ate plastic whenever he had a chance to). It took less then a month to get him used to a high quality brand.
    Sry for my bad english.

    I ALWAYS wondered why Whiskas cat food is branded as KALKAN カルカン here in Japan… now I know!! Thanks Mallory!! We still occasionally buy Whiskas wet Cat food for our three cats in Papua New Guinea (Lamb Mince, Beef Mince and Chicken mince), but recently switched to Felix wet cat food. Whiskas cat biscuits are pretty average, and our cats don’t really like them that much - not to mention our cats have more liquid poop when we give them the Whiskas biscuits... we switched to Royal Canin biscuits as it keeps them fuller longer and is crunchier for their teeth! Now we’re in Japan, we miss them a lot , but I’ll be going back to Papua New Guinea to see them in a few months! 😺😸😺

      Baxter's has been killing pets for a while now as well as Mars too. Baxter's is probably some of the worst food I've ever seen. They can't even name the meat, they have no idea what it even is. I can't believe people will buy any of these foods and think it's okay. Some recipes even contain "cereal" whatever that is. Nothing about the food is right.

    loved this video and the whole concept of reviewing and testing brands....that being said I agree with you not the best food to purchase for your furry friends.... Purina, pedigree whiskas, etc they are cheap for a reason !!!! don't buy these for your cats (or dogs) (if you can help it) if you can't afford premium that's ok but try to find an extra 5-10$ depending on the quanity your purchasing for a more mid shelf reputable brand. help your your cat feel healthier, be healthier, live longer with less medical issues down the line. and ultimately live a HAPPIER life. this is equivalent to McDonald's maybe worse.

      Seriously. You think these people care? They don't. They're brainwashed by their vets into thinking they're good since they simply meet basic AAFCO standards. Most vets are owned by a lot of these companies too. Mars M&Ms owns Banfield, VCA, Bluepearl, and Pet Partners. Vets also take a short class in nutrition and these brands sponsor their college courses and are heavily promoted to them. I am a feline nutritionist and this is why I exist and why vets aren't so skilled in nutrition, would you see your general practicioner for a diet plan and nutritional advice? Highly unlikely. I've seen how deluded people are. Like they are really brainwashed into thinking pets need to eat highly processed foods and that byproducts and dyes are perfectly safe and healthy. If you mention a raw diet to these people they will say their vet claims it will kill their cat or that cats aren't meant to eat raw meat because it's dangerous. It's so frustrating. I wish I could educate enough people to stay away from these dangerous brands.

      @VARY78 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LoriJMarshall Your vet is probably owned by one of those companies. Your vet also doesn't know anything about nutrition because they take a very short course in nutrition where these brands sponsor their courses and promote heavily to them. Would you see your general practitioner for nutritional advice and a diet plan? No you'd probably see a nutritionist. I have been college educated in canine/feline nutrition and any pet nutritionist will STRONGLY advise against these foods. They are DANGEROUS and I see health issues associated with pets eating these foods all the time. They source in China where there's absolutely no regulations and the animals are treated horribly so it's to be expected. You can see their recall history for yourself and it's absolutely appalling. Would you eat unidentified meat full of cancer causing dyes? Didn't think so.

    • @VARY78

      FirstMate and Koha are really awesome brands that are pretty big in your country. They are very reasonably priced for their high quality meats and clean sourcing. No dyes, byproducts, unidentified meats. They're also limited ingredient diets which are highly digestible so your kitty can absorb the nutrients easier. Canadian brands usually have higher standards where as USA standards are pretty mediocre.

    My cat goes nuts for the wet food so I was wondering what is in it.. I thought they were deliberately making it addictive.. I always keep her bowl full of dry food and treat her to a pouch of wet food once a day otherwise it gets expensive. Is it ok to mix them, I wonder why my cat is so obsessed with wanting wet food all the time, she is more like an entitled dog than a cat. I don't know if I should be worried or not. I feel like the only reason she comes for attention these days is because she wants wet food and doesn't want the biscuits unless she really get hungry. But her belly feels full most of the time so I don't understand why she is so desperate for wet food. Maybe I'm over thinking it?

    • @rhonddalesley
      @rhonddalesley 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You’re right to ask questions because it’s tough, I’ve just been through it with my little one and it was a nightmare at times!
      For us, there were 3 main issues we had, the first was what to use as a means of preventing her from going for her stitches, a recovery suit was okay but she was cold because it kept her fur too close to her body, the standard cone was okay but she walked with her head down because she couldn’t see where she was going and she had difficulty eating so I had to find a tiny dish that’d fit inside the cone and hold it while she ate, we ended up with a donut style ‘collar’ which was the best for freedom of movement and comfort, once she got used to it and stopped trying to rip it off she was fine (and it was a watermelon which made her look so stinkin’ cute!)
      The second thing was eating, she had no loss of appetite at all from the get go but I gave her smaller meals more often with extra fluid because her poos are enormous and I didn’t want her popping her stitches plus it made sure she stayed hydrated. The issue was as I described before but small raised and tilted dishes worked best for accessibility.
      The third thing was keeping her relaxed and restricting her movement, oh boy I knew we’d struggle here because she’s so active and easily overstimulated! I put a small stepladder at the side of my bed where she sleeps and put boxes and even used cushions next to the sofa and other places where she climbs, I had no way of being able to use a crate or similar so kept her in my bedroom for the first few days. Once I let her roam just between the bedroom and living room she was in a much better mood and calmed down some, she did start running around at her own pace,
      I put on calming music for cats and videos with birds that I found on TH-cam which were a godsend, the music really got us through the first few days, I put all the high energy toys away until her collar came off at 14 days.
      The first few days were sad because she was nothing like herself and thankfully slept through most of it, after that I felt like I was going crazy trying to keep her occupied with low energy play but we made it!
      You’ll be given some good advice from the vet for post operative care and I’d say to rely on your instinct, you know your girl and if you feel something isn’t right contact the vet.
      Good luck!
