I consider this conversation one of the most overlooked in common music education. They cover the math but not the feel! Where's the music in that? Thank you so much!
I just started composing without barlines, and I realized it is the one thing that has been the biggest block to my compositions. Having barlines kills the writing process. And I like keeping my rhythms relatively simple so not having them seems best. Placing numbered commas in the score for practice reference is probably best. And if there is any change in time signature that can be marked above the stave. I love being able to write note durations as they are without having to think if it needs to be tied over a barline or over a specific beat. I also like keeping minims or quarters as the beat holders and utilizing breves. 8th and 16ths are more work to write down and create more clutter on the page. My most recent piece was in 9/4 with no barlines and it felt so freeing to just write what I imagined rather than trying to figure out what the time signature is before hand and where the notes fall on what beats, it unfolded quite naturally. Only when I finished the piece did I realize it was in 9/4.
I wish someone had explained me music theory like that, in my time. I suppose you can't do that with spirits, not in a regular school, but you could use sweets and candies. P.S. I love the lady hosting the video 🥰
What fun. Educational and entertaining.
How does the OAE only have 70k subs? Sometime soon this is going to skyrocket. You guys are doing amazing things; thank you so much!
Now at 84.9K.
Just a small comment to appreciate the work you put into this.
