Damn 2021 here. Lew has came up so much and the channel is amazing. Dude just got a 200k Taican. Great work to Lew for all his hard work and dedication.. Goals!!!
Upgrading the PS3 hard drive to a 1TB is only good in 2017 if you have the original 60GB model. The 60GB PS3 is getting very rare and It will defiantly be worth more money with a 1TB SSD. Still the best console sony has ever made in my opinion
Still not that rare? Got my (non backwards compatible) PS3 Fat for 50 Euro's. After getting CFW on the thing it'll play most PS2 games as well; software emulation though. (ManaGunZ)
I love how you put the actual information of the hard drive in the description. I had trouble finding out which one to use and you pretty much helped me with everything! Subs
Simple, standard answer MATH! For you and, I a MB is 1024. To Storage Manufactures a MB is exactly 1000. A 1Tb only has around 931Gb of useable storage.
I upgraded mine a while back, sony did make it "retardidly" easy to upgrade the HDD. I wanted a 1TB drive, but settled for a sensible 750GB. Great video.
Damn, nice. I loved that all the PlayStation consoles since then let you upgrade the hardrives with normal laptop hdds and without voiding the warranty. I upgraded to 320gb in 2009 and held with that for years, and it was still a lot for a PS3.
Really appreciate your communication style and expert advise. Picking up the 1TB HD very soon! I'll be back to hear what else you have to say. Keep it up!!
I love your watch LOL I just ordered one because it looks so nice! Anyways amazing videos, even when i've already seen certain items unboxed on other youtube channels I come here too watch the same items being unboxed simply because your unboxing are unbeatable! Great work, Don't stop! :)
if I have CFW installed on a PS3, can I just change out the hdd for a massive one? or is the CFW ON the drive? I can use an external HDD if needed, on usb, but putting the 1-2 tb drive inside would be very elegant/convenient
I found a Toshiba 1tb hard drive it says it will work in a PS3. I'm looking to get the backwards compatible PS3 since my ps2 is in need of a laser but I guess the question is.... Toshiba....is that a good brand for this? Also u used a external hard drive for the back up can't you just use that on top of the 60gb? Either way it's just a couple of questions that I'm trying to figure out
I do love the upgrade to 1TB , plenty of space for all my entertaintment media, and with CFW regbug , sky's the limit:) used to have the 60gb ...what a joke. I do highly recommend this upgrade and I only paided $51 @ amzon. what a steal
You can replace your HDD just as long it is a 2.5 9.5mm 5400RPM. 1.5TB so far is the highest I've seen to work. That's what I have now, working trying to put a 2TB,
Damion Daponte Windows doesn't "officially" support fat32 drives over 32GB... you get around that by using a third party partition software. I dled paragon partition manger just for this. Maybe a mac works too.
***** I have 1.5TB in mine and it works just fine. I tried a 2TB, but model I was using wasn't compatible with the PS3. I believe it's between 1.5.TB - 2TB.
So, when you upgrade your hard drive to a PS3 slim, does the hard drive you’re going to upgrade need to be formatted first before you use it or is it just a simple install like take out the old drive, put in the new drive and you’re good to go?
BEST, QUICK, & EASY WAY TO DO THIS IN 2020. I did with a 32 GB Cruzer USB Drive. Do EXACTLY as he says and you'll be up and gaming no prob. This is the replacement drive I used. From Best Buy new: WD BLUE 2.5 SKU: 9314126 Model: WDBMYH0010BNC-NRSN Description: 1 TB WD LAPTOP MAINSTREAM HARD DRIVE
Great little tutorial. Question: will backing up data also back up DLC so you don't have to re-download it? I'm about at the point where my old 60gb just isn't cutting it anymore, but I also have a fair amount of DLC and I'd rather not have to spend another six hours re-downloading it all again.
ChishioAme I'm fairly certain that using the back up utility essentially clones your HDD to your backup drive. This would mean anything and everything on your PS3 would be saved
I did a 1 TB drive in my old PS3 fatboy.... all the space I could ever need. 1.5 TB seem like overkill but hey, if you own 300 games and store movies and everything else under the sun on it. Why not get a 1.5 TB drive in there.
I upgraded my 80Gb PS3 to 500GB [WD5000BEVT] (59$) 1T is just too much (for me) you have to keep in mind that you should get the same specs for the hard drive so you won't have any problems [ 2.5 inch , 5400 RPM , SATA II ] I also noticed the loading times became a lot better after installing it !
thanks a lot bro i have a 500 gig drive coming in today and now I can use this vid to figure out how to put it in correctly, i too have the very first ps3 and man that thing runs out of room so quick!

Hi there thanks for your helpful video I have ps3 40 gb I am upgrading it to 500 gb I have a question for you my ps3 fan makes lots of noise do u have any tips for me or any video thanks for your help
How do you format your external HDD to be read by your PS3? I could not get it to work when I upgraded to 1TB Seagate Firecuda HDD from 500GB on my PS3 Superslim. I able to back-up my saved data files to a USB thumb drive but not my game data forcing me to reinstall my game data and redownload update patches for my games.
Aahahahahahhahahahaha L0L I have my PS3 doing a system restore and at the end of the video I thought that my PS3 was about to blow up L0L I'm just doing a system restore because of a problem I caused with CFW and I thought let's put a 2tb SSD in it so went to TH-cam and stumbled across this man your old videos are way better and funny aww well keep it up anyway love you man
Man I know this is an old video......I hope your still around or someone can answer this for me.. FROM the video it looks like there is No reinstallation file you need when you swap the drive. That is to say you do not have to load firmware. Does the Ps3 format the new drive for you automatically? And if so what verision of software is on the drive when its finished? The video did not cover doing any updates and I was thinking that just like the Ps4 when you upgrade your Hard drive to a new one you have to grap the Reinstallation file from Sony. But as of today 12/14/20 the only file Sony has is an update file that is version 4.87. Hope someone can clear the air with me on this before I proceed. Thanks!
The point I was trying to make was, he backed up a 20Gb ps3 on to an External Hdd, installed the new 1Tb drive and restored it from the External HDD. Looking at the video the system had used 115gb of space after restoring. Hope this clears my comment up a little
Yes. It will have to be a 2.5'' Sata Hard-Drive. Make sure it is 5400 RPM. Any Higher than 5400rpm, then it will not work. And dont forget to back up all your game saves before doing anything.check on amazon for good deals.
I’ve ran through 2 fat ps3s as well with backwards compatibility they are so beautiful my first one yellow light of death... my second one idk what’s going on but i powered it on a couple of days ago from not using it for a year or so and games boot up and all but it would freeze installing game data or it would freeze if i put another game in and i click start match not sure what’s wrong.. i can click home and all that to back out I am not tryna sell these beautiful 3 in 1 peace of machinery. I’ll keep but I bought a super slim on the side till i fix it, bc i like playing older games here and there that’s why i kept , I take care of my things so idk what could have went wrong. I’ve had many systems and i have classics as well and I have new systems as well but I always want to pop in an old disc and this came up, mines no yellow light because mine does show everything like i said.
If you have a ps3 slim the Hard drive will be in the front of your ps3 instead of the side, undernear the long slot where you put in your disk. But to unlock the hdd panel for your ps3 slim you will have to flip your ps3 upside down there will be a panel you can put you fingernail in near the edge of your ps3 near the same spot where I told your hard disk is. You pull it up but it won't fully come out. It's attached so don't yank it. Now you spin it (the panel) you just flipped up with your finger nail and you will see the blue screw same as in the video. Then you unscrew it and now you have access to your hard drive. You now flip you ps3 if you still have it upside down. And pull out the hdd panel now its the same steps as in the video. But these are the steps for a ps3 slim not a super slim or fat those ps3 models are different
I had to format my system before i installed my 1 terra byte. If you have information that needs to be saved a flash drive is required. If you do not do this properly you will see a message saying it doesn't recognize the new upgraded t.b.
freakin sweet. i've been having to delete my favorite demos to be able to install ps2 classics haha i just had to get Manhunt, and Bully, and damn thing is all full.. hopefully i can pick this up and get it working before GTA5 comes out! thanks a bunch for the reply, and to unboxtherapy for the vid
What if you don't have any important game data? Do I have to back it up still? I just got a PS3 with no data. Can I just pop in a Samsung Evo 512gb? Please answer quickly because I plan to do it soon.
@TheSUPERVANQUISH its because u have 7200 rpm. the rpm won't slow down much just because ur not using a lot of memory. that's why 5400 rpm is recommended
I own an external hard drive (1TB) seagate (FAT32) i plugged it in the usb port in my ps3(12gb slim) but i couldn't install or move game data on the external HD can you plz help me doing this if it is possible
Will this only work for the fat ps3's? i have a slim ps3 that's about 3 years old, will it work for that one? Thanks for making this video too. i was thinking I would have to get one of those "Geek" guys at best buy to help me figure this out. But you make it look super easy.
is cooling not a problem with this? i was looking around for stuff on this and lots of people were saying not to go over 600gb due to trying to keep it cool, i mean, i'm reasonable at computing and have quite an understanding, but I was just curious as i have had cooling problems when inserting larger hdds in a laptop due to insufficient cooling
Will the Scorpio Black Version work with my fat ps3 as well just like this Scorpio Blue did? I followed the link and it seems the Black version can go abit faster in speed but I just want to make sure its compatible. Also, you have not had any issues at all with the ps3 memory or anything since this video? This way I can know what to buy.
no, not at all. as long as you instal a hdd with the right specs it should have no effect on your systems performance. make sure your hdd is a 2.5'' 5400rpm internal hdd and you should be fine. also one thing not mentioned in this video that is important is make sure if your'e backing up your dat onto an external hdd the external hdd is formatted to FAT32 format as this is the only partition that the PS3 recognizes. Otherwise you will not be able to restore your data.
sure it has, the first ones came with 4 usbs and input to memory card readers, then they changed it and started to make with 2 usb without memory card readers
@Artistic323 Thanks very much. As I always say - You guys make this content possible. I truly do appreciate the support.

what will happen if i do all of the steps but use a usb stick instead since i don't have the thing that he used
*Slower
Random writes are slower on a USB.
Just felt like I had to necro this post ;)
I added 1TB SSD in mine few days ago before I had 250 gb SSD it wasn't big enough in my ps3 flat i find it keeps it cooler
I own an external hard drive (1TB) seagate (FAT32) i plugged it in the usb port in my ps3(12gb slim) but i couldn't install or move game data on the external HD can you plz help me doing this if it is possible
Hi , I have ps3 fat one I wanted upgrade also mine from where I can buy this hard drive?
Aren't there some saves that don't allow to copy, or doing full backup does copies them anyway?
This way I can know what to buy.
you explained it so well, compared to another video I watched
no, not at all. as long as you instal a hdd with the right specs it should have no effect on your systems performance. make sure your hdd is a 2.5'' 5400rpm internal hdd and you should be fine. also one thing not mentioned in this video that is important is make sure if your'e backing up your dat onto an external hdd the external hdd is formatted to FAT32 format as this is the only partition that the PS3 recognizes. Otherwise you will not be able to restore your data.
I love you!!! Got to love the fat PS3! :) GREAT VIDEOS AS ALWAYS!!
How's the 2 tb working out? Has it slowed up the ps3 cause its so much to read of size or is it running just as good as the older smaller drive?
sure it has, the first ones came with 4 usbs and input to memory card readers, then they changed it and started to make with 2 usb without memory card readers
