  • Made my first video for my lovely boat.
    Started building her in July 2013
    but soon after i had to go to army and that's why it's taking so long. Video is about work i have done over 1,5 year. Alot of video material is lost but atleast one half of everypart should be there :)
    Without cabin, just daysailer.
    16footer, 5meter sailboat
    sloop sails
    In the end covered with epoxy and is waiting for warmer weathers again.
    Interested in plans: www.svensons.com/boat/?p=SailB...
    PART 2: • Sailboat building time...
    PART 3: • Sailboat building time...
    Any questions or suggestion, let me know!!

Maybe you have some tips on what to start with. 4 to 5 meters long boat made out of plywood is what I have in my mind. No deckhouse obviously. Have no idea about width and depth. And how do i know the estimated draft and is it even relevant? Hope you spare some advice to your downstair neighbor with 6 toes :D

    I think you did a great job at making a cool boat. Like that you used non Marine plywood. I think marine plywood is overrated.

    • @geebee3d
      @geebee3d 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, YOU might THINK it’s overrated, but in reality real marine plywood is superior to exterior grade plywood. Reason being is that marine ply is made from plies of equal thickness, has no voids, and will not delaminate. It is also far nicer to work with, especially if you need to plane the wood.
      Can a boat be built with regular plywood? Of course. It will float, row, sail, and all of that jazz. But in order to make it last for a good long while, it will need extensive maintenance and upkeep compared to a mar be ply boat. Maybe you like sanding and refinishing every few years? Even a simple boat requires an investment in time, labor, and materials. For my money, skimping on plywood to save a few bucks is not worth it to me.
      For anyone thinking of building a boat, if you have to get on the water NOW, by all means, go to your local orange or blue store, get some ply, and have at it. Just know that there are limitations to using cheap materials. The voids in exterior ply can cause panels to break, the face veneers are often so thin that they are easily sanded through, and the stuff is heavy, so the performance of the finished boat is lessened. A sheet of 1/4 exterior fir ply is around $20 a sheet, and some 1/4” BS1088 Meranti Marine ply is around $50 a sheet. Your first boat will most likely use two to three sheets of plywood. So you save 60-90 dollars in plywood. Now, that seems cool, until you find out that you need to sheath your entire fir ply boat in fiberglass cloth in order to prevent checking of the plywood. For an average size beginners boat, say 14 feet, the cost to do that is around $20 for the glass, and $50 (at least) for the epoxy. Add $70 to your build costs. All of the sudden, you increased your workload, and spent MORE money than if you used good wood.
      With all the time and effort it takes to build a boat, I think y’all owe it to yourselves to use quality materials. Marine ply is lighter, easier to work with, requires less maintenance, and is prettier than exterior fir ply. After the two years it takes you to build your boat, you won’t miss that extra $60 you spent on wood, and you will like your finished boat even more due to the fact that you can spend more time using it and less time maintaining it.
      Note, the above is not meant to discourage would be boat builders, but rather inform them of the realities of boat building, time, and material cost. Like I said, if you want to try boat building, use the cheap stuff. You will get a boat that lasts a few years, and will be fun to build and use. If you are looking to build a boat you can pass on to your grandchildren, use the good stuff.
