About 23 years ago a friend asked me to build a bridge for his wife, like the one in some Van Gogh painting. 3' x 14' Wanted treated wood arches. Glued them with 5200. He liked it so well he wanted a bigger one for a different location. This one was 6' wide and 16' long. I was shocked when he drove his tractor over it. They are still there, so that 5200 is good stuff. Nice job on your boat so far.
5200 is amazing stuff. There's only one rule about it. NEVER use it on anything you may want to take apart again, ever. Misused 5200 is responsible for more cursing amongst sailors than any other substance.
Excellent. Thanks because your video brought back memories of the boat I built in high school, a Mini Max Hydro Plane in 1965. Loved it! I was chased down on a public lake by the local sheriff and told I could not run the “Pot Licker” on the lake even though I had the legal size maximum motor (5 hp). When I asked why he said, “because you can out run me”.
Awesome project! I built a Don Hill 18 ft drift boat 2 years ago. I love it. Dave, who sell the plans is really helpful if you have questions. Wooden drift boats are very quiet on the water. You won’t be disappointed. Can’t wait for part 2!

Must say very well presented! When in high school as a fly fishing addict in Oregon I wanted a drift boat...couldn't afford one so in HS shop built 2, sold the first one and it paid for mine. 8:1 scarf joint for your plywood next time. Would be faster than driving up to Washington for the pre cut puzzle joints. Not hard for a guy with your skills! I've built 3 boats and will be eagerly waiting for the next installment.
My absolute favourite book as a child was "Bolger boats", a combination of all (famous boat designer) Philip Bolger's books... Just boat plans with some anecdotes about them. Simple kayaks, rowboats, sailboats, cross-atlantic rowboats, houseboats, a trireme, ... and also "folding schooners", three-mast things with a hinge in the middle so you can put them on a simple trailer. I'm still plotting to build Archaeopterix, basically a surfboard with a plank to sit on, if I'll live next to the sea at some point.
Nice! More quality work. Top tip from a sailor - The pointy end is the bow, the square end is the stern. I wanted to jump in the screen and lend a hand but you nailed it (as usual).
Hey TotalBoat! It’s awesome seeing a company engaging with creators that use your products. I have watched many creators that use your products for boat building and other uses, the results speak for themselves.
Drift boat will probably be my next boat build, soon as I recover from building my last one. Seems to be about a one-every-three-years addiction. No wood flour filler on the puzzle joints? I’ve only ever scarfed and butt-jointed/glassed with marine ply. Usually you add wood flour (saw dust) to your epoxy to thicken it to a ketchup consistency, then glue with that. The glue ends up stronger than the wood that way, but still conforms to stitching.
As someone who knows even less about boat building than you do, it's looking real good so far! My opinion may not be worth much, but sometimes knowing that it at least looks plausible helps!

I built a similar 14' boat (from plans) many years ago with zero woodworking and/or epoxy skills -- very much a learning experience, ha ha! I had a small Craftsman bandsaw, a jigsaw, and a drill (and a ton of mini c-clamps). Same problem with the long plywood, but had to use a simple butt joint with a rectangle of plywood expoxied/screwed over the joint (and then hand-filed the screw points off). I would've loved to have the plywood puzzle ends that you procured -- seems like a much more elegant solution! Your boat looks fantastic!
I’m looking forward to the next vid in this series - that’s quite an undertaking! It was nice to see your foreman in there too. I’m sure he’s ready to go for a ride. 🙂
Nice Drift Boat plans but I would have used Port Orford Cedar instead of Ash to make it lighter. I love drift boats and catching Salmon and Steelhead. Great boat for the family to have fun in, even if you don't fish.
3M 5200 is pretty solid for boat building. You do want to ensure your wood is joined exactly as you want it before it cures. You'll destroy any wood you've joined trying to get it apart otherwise. I've used that before making a Puddle Duck Racer.

Lol, that was an insane amount of screws for 3M 5200. You didn't need any. That stuff is crazy strong. I have known sailboat racers to use it to glue 600lb keels directly to their boat after breaking the keel mounts. **Please warn people that free handing table saw cuts is the best way to get kickback. Great project and great job showing all the steps in building a "basic" plywood boat.

Dude, I just found your channel and watched the subaru camper thingy an this video - instant sub. Love your style of video and keeping it light with that dry humour. Love it. Thanks man :)
It's handy to have those huge baulks of timber for jointing the plywood.
was so happy to learn that it's 16' long...my wood shop in the basement, is 20' long so i am ok..will start building it soon....by the way it must be so fun to be, in your head...great work Sir
Where did you get your boat plans from? Could you link the plans you are using?

Thanks for the entertainment value that you include. It is great to see the foreman checking on the progress.
I bet your little one is excited for a fishing trip when it's finished.👍👍
This is great. All I need now is a massive very expensive and fully fitted workshop
Everyone hates sanding but the only thing I enjoy sanding is a rough cut slab. It's like your bringing the wood to life.
Jason - wondering if you might be inclined to do a short video on bookcase face frame construction? I am struggling with how to mark and accurately align the vertical and horizontal styles (using pocket holes) of a 6' W x 4' H (three shelves) bookcase I am going to build.
I could never build what you build, but I am completely entertained by watching you work. My woodworking skills have a looooong way to go.
I love this! Your humor makes it so much easier for me to follow and pay attention.
