  • IRL inspiration for TeleBlue. Same cable box I grew up with. Turns out the TeleBlue box prop still booted (with the exception of not being connected to actual cable). Not much to present other than being kind of neato.

My family had a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8000HDC in the late 2000s. The reboot sequence was nearly identical to this, except that the "advanced services are temporarily unavailable" message would precede the blue screen. When that came on, you had to click the Power button or that message would stay on the screen for a long while. Those old boxes were peculiar sons of bitches, let me tell you.

Another message that would greet us far too often, read "your explorer settop is not authorized for use" in the same font as "advanced services are temporarily unavailable". My folks were absent-minded and often missed bill payment deadlines so I had to deal with that shit once a month. Lucky me.

when i was little this was always precluded with comically loud static and it would come on at like 3 AM and scare the everloving shit out of me every single time

there's a test menu during this startup sequence. i forget the specific number combination/buttons you had to hit but i know my dad would pull it up cause he worked for Time Warner. it would show you text detailing the boot/connection process
