Scientific Atlanta Explorer 3100 cable box with SARA firmware channel surfing 10/14/2015 6:37 PM EDT

- This is me flipping through channels on a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 3100 cable box with I think the SARA firmware. Also the reason not all of the channels are turned to is because we don't pay for all the channels and this is an SD only box. Any glitches I think are caused by the cable box. Also I thank God for this awesome cable box.
Note: newer cable boxes(ones that support HD and not TIVO I think) use a firmware that looks a lot like SARA but text and stuff is clearer. TiVo boxes I'm not sure, I haven't seen the firmware on a TiVo box.
Update: A few months ago I saw the TiVo firmware and its definitely not what I mentioned in the note, its black and is more modern, but I still like these older firmwares. And that clearer text SARA I was talking about is the updated version of SARA, just these older boxes didn't get the update.
Update: As of 3/23/2017 this box has been decommissioned and replaced by a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 4250C which is oddly an SD only box that has the updated SARA firmware, it's a pretty interesting box. The 3100 featured in this video quit working the other day so I cannot make an updated version with my tuner now. Maybe if I find another one somewhere I can record it but unfortunately I can no longer record the 3100. Although I may have this video in higher resolution somewhere and if I find it I may reupload it.

The reason why you may see Color bars on WSAZ, WCHS, WVAH during certain times is due to Syndication exclusivity by the local in market stations such as WOAY, WVVA and WVNS. If the in market station Syndication exclusivity of programs they can request the cable provider to block or place slate on out of market stations. WSAZ,, WCHS and WVAH are actually out of market and are Significantly viewed status in parts of the market.
news89 yeah, I have noticed that happens, WCHS actually seems to never show color bars but instead show a feed of WOAY when not airing the local news. The others just show color bars during certain times.

I'm surprised that only a handful of channels have an updated logo
yeah, and most of the ones that have changed their logo have been added on in 2014 after the removal of Viacom, back when we had Viacom, I think most of them had the older logos too like I think Nickelodeon had the old splat logo I think and I think Comedy Central had their 2000s logo too if I remember correctly.

I wish that our boxes had old Sara frimware on our boxes because I love the font I wish I had a Scientific Atlanta 3250hd from Spectrum(Charter) for my 1991 Hitachi CRT tv!!! I saw Furries!!!!!
Cole Piaget where did you see Furries? But yeah something like this would look better in an older TV I think. All of the boxes Suddenlink gives out now have the newer version of SARA. All the older ones still work though. I doubt Charter is going to give out any of these now.

Yeah, I doubt any new boxes have the older SARA firmware
Someone gave me one of these, and a rotten 4250HD. I also have two Star Choice, built by Motorola. Those belonged to my dad. Nowadays my dad has an ugly Arris box. I much preferred the box he had before but sadly the TV provider took it back when they installed this new one. Unfortunately I don't think I have any pictures of it, no idea what it was. I hope it still exists but that's just wishful thinking.
I don't personally know anything about these TV box thingies. I used to like TV back in ~1998-2005 but I stopped caring about it after that as there wasn't anything good on anymore. I never subscribed with one of these TV box thingies, back when I cared about TV it was analog and free. But I do have good memories of browsing the menus and options of my dad's Star Choice box when he got that in 2006 I believe, I thought it looked really neat.
If you like the firmware of this Scientific Atlanta Explorer 3100 box, have you looked into preserving it? This thing is most definitely full of microcontrollers and tons of different firmware. Have you at least located where the UI might be stored, if that's the only thing you care about? It should be in a ROM chip, but it could also be in a microcontroller. Anyway, desoldering it would be insanely hard, but once that's done I'm sure there'd be a way to read it.
Do you collect TV boxes?
VideoTape that’s cool. Unfortunately, this box is no longer in service. It quit working in 2017. Some of these boxes are still in service though at least where I live. I don’t necessarily collect boxes. I think I know where some of these type boxes are though. I think they’ve been down in a basement for a few years though so I don’t know if they still work. I don’t know how to interface with them though even if they did work to try and get the firmware off of them.
Ok. That's a very short lifespan isn't it? Do you think maybe it died of overheating, because its top vents were blocked by a TV, like what we see in this video? Oops...
Yeah, I don't know what would be harder. Obtaining the firmware using physical methods, or trying to get it digitally via an interface if that's possible?
I'm curious, what would you say your channel is about? To me it seems to be about preserving/documenting rare and obscure stuff for the future. Great job, it's really cool.
You like weather stuff? My dad, who used to be a farmer, had an old weather radio, I think it was a Realistic. Unfortunately it was destroyed years and years ago. I wonder if there is still a weather band where I live. Sadly, likely not. But if there is, I'd record it if I still had a radio. I find the preservation of stuff like this really important.
VideoTape yeah, I think the TV shouldn’t have been on top of it but this wasn’t my house. Good ventilation is key on everything for reliability. This box is now back in the hands of Suddenlink so I would have to find another box if I wanted to try and extract the firmware. I initially made this channel as a weather channel. However, my interest in the weather has since mostly went away. So I mostly considering it an archiving channel now. If you want a weather radio, I think you can get a WR120(which is a pretty good radio) for I think 30 some dollars at Walmart. You can also find them in many walkie talkies, but the antennas aren’t as good in most of them and in the case of mine the sound quality isn’t as good.

This SD box can WVNS in HD witch that's amazing.
Oh, that actually wasn't HD I don't believe. I think it was just an error on the icon. At the time, the HD channel was separate on 110. Even HD boxes wouldn't display 10 at the time in HD.

Didn't the cable box like didnt boot up or something anymore, since i remember a very very very old box i had years ago from suddenlink did the same thing, it was our old living room box
I believe it stopped working after some time. I'm not sure if they killed these really old boxes when they went all HD or what. I can't remember for sure when this box died. This was at my grandparents house.
What happens if you tune to the blank VOD channels (999 and 1) or the TV Caller ID channel (975)?
Those are for VOD services and checking caller ID settings and logs.

Nev: 2nd Channel ah. Well we do have a My Network TV affiliate technically. However, it it carried on the same station as my Fox affiliate and the Fox programming is the vast majority of their programming. However, I do not get the same station you get in Jersey. I live in West Virginia.

JANET TUCKNER yeah. This was recorded on an older box that had the old SARA still on it. Any of the same boxes here also have this firmware. Most of Suddenlink's newer non-TiVo boxes here were updated to an HD version of SARA in I think early 2014. I wanted to get a better recording of this box but this box quit working last year so I will have to use another box if I get a better recording of it now.
@@weatheronthe8s895 can you make a video on that top box not this the top box in Vail but the one with the old Sara firmware I love that guide because I love the font I doubt they're not going to release that font why can't Technicolor [Cisco] release the old school Sara firmware font.
Well. There is one problem. I don't have any of these boxes easily accessible to me now. If I did I would remake this video. Sorry about that. I wish I did though. If I do get access to one that I can easily record I will try and get it maybe.

@@cjpwolf2436 I do too. Sorry i can't get it for you. These boxes are getting rarer and rarer these days. Most boxes where I live I think now are the newer SARA and some TiVo boxes.
